Chapter 4

It was seven in the morning when Rukia awoke, the soft light of dawn filtering through her curtains. With a yawn, she padded to the bathroom, where she brushed her teeth and prepared for a refreshing shower. As she stood under the lukewarm water, her mind wandered to her powers. Curiosity getting the better of her, she decided to experiment with her abilities. She extended her hand and concentrated, expecting a dramatic display like in the movies. When nothing happened, frustration began to build. Just as she was about to give up, delicate snowflakes began to drift down from nowhere. Her eyes widened in astonishment as she realized the bathroom was rapidly turning into a frosty wonderland. Panicking, Rukia quickly finished her shower and turned on the hot water to warm the room. Once the bathroom was back to a more manageable temperature, she stepped out and began rummaging through her suitcase for an outfit. She had been too overwhelmed the night before to unpack properly, and her day yesterday had been a whirlwind.

Sifting through her clothes, she settled on a pair of black leggings and a purple and white striped shirt. As she dressed, she glanced at her phone and saw messages from her aunt and sister.

From Auntie Shirayuki: 'I'm so happy to hear you're adjusting. When you have time, tell me more about your guardian. Your sister's noble spirit is a lucky find. I'm annoyed that your guardian won't reveal what magical creature he is, but have a great day, my love.'

Rukia smiled at her aunt's message before checking her sister's text.

From Hisana: 'Hey, I'm heading to breakfast soon. Join me when you can.'

After grabbing her backpack and quickly fixing her short hair, Rukia texted her roommates to let them know she was going to breakfast early. As she left her apartment, she walked briskly to the dining hall, finding it still mostly deserted.

"Rukia!"

The sound of her sister's voice made Rukia's heart leap. She rushed over and enveloped Hisana in a tight hug. Hisana was dressed in a pair of sleek, black leggings and a fitted, deep blue athletic shirt that complemented her strong build. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she hugged Rukia, clearly thrilled to see her sister. It felt as if no time had passed at all since they had last seen each other.

"What the heck, Rukia? You haven't texted me at all!"

Rukia looked down, sheepishly. "I didn't want to be too clingy. I texted you and Auntie at night."

Hisana rolled her eyes with a playful smile. "We're sisters, you can never be too clingy. I want you to know I'm here for you. And guess what? I can now control the temperature in a room and create icicles. I'm also diving into Fae research because apparently, there are light and dark fae. Auntie won't tell me what type we are. My roommates are amazing—Nozomi is a water elemental and Yui is a light elf. Their guardians are a dragonkin and an earth elemental. And my guardian is Byakuya Kuchiki—he's so cute. Come on, let's grab some food and talk."

Rukia followed Hisana to the breakfast line, where Hisana chose snowflake pancakes and a frostberry parfait, while Rukia opted for icy oatmeal and frosted tea. As they settled at a table, Hisana continued enthusiastically.

"Oh, and did you know there are different dimensions for the fae types? Dark and light fae each have their own dimensions too. And the most powerful creatures? Dragons! They even have a Dragon Lord—mind-blowing, right?"

Rukia nodded, clearly enjoying her sister's excitement. Her eyes lit up with joy and pride as she listened to her sister talk. The dynamic of Hisana speaking while Rukia listened felt perfectly natural, and Hisana's attention was completely on her sister until Orihime suddenly appeared.

"Rukia!"

Rukia and Hisana turned to see Orihime rushing toward them. Orihime wore a soft pink, knee-length dress with delicate floral patterns, paired with white ballet flats. Her long, orangish-blonde hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, and she wore a warm, friendly smile. Hisana instinctively pulled Rukia close, but Orihime stopped, bowing and introducing herself.

"Hi, I'm Orihime Inoue. I'm Rukia's roommate."

Hisana greeted Orihime with a warm smile and handshake. "Hello, I'm Hisana, Rukia's twin sister."

Orihime nodded, her gaze shifting between the sisters. "I see the resemblance, though there are some differences."

"We're fraternal," Hisana explained with a chuckle.

"Oh, that's why you're taller," Orihime said, blushing slightly.

Hisana gave Rukia one last hug before heading out with her breakfast, leaving Rukia and Orihime at the table. Rukia felt a pang of longing as she watched her sister leave, wishing Orihime hadn't shown up just yet. Orihime apologized for the interruption.

Rukia shook her head, smiling. "You weren't interrupting. Have you had breakfast?"

Orihime shook her head. "No, I saw you and got excited. I'm going to get breakfast now."

Rukia nodded as Orihime hurried off. As she ate, she realized she had forgotten to get a dessert. When Orihime returned with her herbal tea and fruit salad, they compared their schedules. Orihime's face showed clear apprehension as she mentioned her first class.

"I'm not too thrilled about my Dark Arts and Mysticism class with Professor Nyx. It's going to be with Senna, but I'm still a bit anxious about it."

Rukia nodded sympathetically. "That sounds intense. I hope it goes well for you."

Orihime managed a small smile. "Thanks. I'm hoping it won't be too bad. I'm looking forward to our other classes, though."

Tatsuki and Senna joined them shortly, chatting about their classes and looking forward to the weekend. Rukia agreed she could use a relaxing day in bed. After breakfast, Tatsuki walked Rukia to her class and waved goodbye.

Rukia arrived at the classroom, her eyes widening in amazement as she saw a door formed from water. Stepping inside, she found herself in a classroom with an underwater theme, complete with realistic holograms of aquatic life. She took a seat in the back, preparing her notebooks for class.

Professor Thalassa entered, a graceful figure with flowing aqua-blue hair and an ethereal presence. Her robe shimmered like the ocean waves.

"Good morning, class. I'm Professor Thalassa, your instructor for Water Magic and Marine Studies. This course will explore both fascinating and dangerous sea creatures. If you need any assistance, feel free to ask. Let's dive in."

As the class began, water and creatures flowed around them in a mesmerizing display. Rukia was captivated by the immersive experience and left the class with a newfound appreciation for the underwater world. Afterward, Rukia struggled to find her next class, feeling lost without her usual guides. In her panic, she bumped into someone and quickly apologized.

"Damn! You can bump into me anytime."

Rukia looked up to see a guy with a striking reddish-pink mohawk, fierce eyes, and a menacing aura. He wore a dark leather jacket over a graphic t-shirt and rugged jeans, his overall appearance exuding an intimidating confidence. The hall was empty, and he advanced toward her, causing her heart to race. Fearful, she tried to run but found herself frozen in place. Just as the situation seemed dire, Ichigo appeared. He was dressed in a simple yet sharp outfit: a fitted black shirt and cargo pants, with his orange hair neatly styled. He quickly subdued the guy, gripping his arm tightly. Rukia saw the guy's eyes well up with tears, and Ichigo's determined expression was a clear sign of his protective nature.

"Rukia, what's your next class?"

"Se… umm, Selene. Professor Selene," Rukia stammered.

Ichigo nodded and continued to restrain the guy, his grip firm. "Okay, I have that class too. Close your eyes and cover your ears."

Rukia complied, her heart racing as she felt Ichigo gently set her down in front of a door that resembled the night sky. When she opened her eyes, they were in a completely different area. The door opened to reveal a serene woman with long, silver hair and a calm demeanor, wearing a robe that shimmered like starlight.

"Oh, there are my two missing students. Please, take a seat," she said with a welcoming smile.

Rukia bowed and quickly took a seat in the back of the classroom, with Ichigo following closely behind. They settled in as the lecture began, immersing themselves in the topic of Lunar Magic and astrology. The classroom was designed to resemble a celestial expanse, with stars and constellations projected on the walls and ceiling. The effect was mesmerizing, making Rukia marvel at how each classroom had its own unique, immersive design.

As the lecture drew to a close, Rukia and Ichigo headed to the dining hall for lunch. Rukia glanced at Ichigo, curious. "What happened to that guy from earlier?"

Ichigo sighed, a hint of annoyance in his expression. "I'm sure he's getting his arm healed. Not everyone here is good; some people are real assholes. Like me." He smirked, causing Rukia to chuckle. "But seriously, some are dangerous and will use their power to cause trouble."

Rukia's eyebrows knitted together in concern. She had thought the college was a sanctuary, but it seemed there were always some bad apples, no matter the setting. They found a table in the far corner of the bustling dining hall.

Just then, Renji bounded up behind Ichigo and jumped onto his back, his enthusiasm palpable. "Dude, did you hear about Bazz-B? Someone tore his arm clean off!"

Rukia shuddered at the thought and excused herself to get her lunch. She walked over to the ice foods line, where today's spread featured an assortment of chilled dishes. She happily selected the Frosted Fish Salad: a refreshing mix of cold-water fish, crisp greens, and a dressing made from frost berries and mint. The fish was lightly smoked, adding a subtle depth of flavor. She also grabbed a mint iced tea before returning to the table.

Orihime, who was already there, greeted Rukia with a warm hug before heading back to the line to get her lunch. Tatsuki and Senna joined them a few minutes later, settling in with their own meals. Tatsuki, in her usual athletic gear, looked decidedly unimpressed as she bit into a spicy chicken sandwich. Ichigo and Renji, meanwhile, were lined up for hot foods. Rukia found herself wondering what type of creature Ichigo was.

Uryu was at the wrap station, while Chad was at the salad bar. Rukia noticed Senna perusing the enchanted food section, curious about what those magical treats might taste like. They all sat down and began chatting.

"So, Bazz-B got his arm ripped off and still won't say who did it," Senna said, her tone intrigued.

Rukia turned to Ichigo, who met her gaze with a knowing look before focusing on his food.

Tatsuki nodded, adding, "The healers had to call in Seriphina because it was so severe."

Uryu commented, "Bazz-B has always been a troublemaker. Maybe he picked a fight with the wrong person."

Chad simply nodded, concentrating on his lunch. Rukia stayed silent, her thoughts consumed with the day's events. She glanced at Ichigo, her eyes betraying a hint of apprehension. Ichigo noticed and cleared his throat.

"So, does anyone have classes together?" he asked, trying to steer the conversation to a lighter topic.

Chad, Renji, and Uryu exchanged glances of realization.

"Oh shit, guess what! I have Professor Liora, and she's a total fire sprite literally. I'm looking forward to it—I love my fiery women!" Renji grinned, clearly excited.

Tatsuki gave him a disapproving look as she ate. The conversation shifted to their classes and professors for the semester, a welcome distraction for Rukia. She learned that Ichigo had her last period with Professor Zephyr for Air Magic and Aerodynamics. She also had Professor Nyx with Renji and Tatsuki next period.

After lunch, everyone said their goodbyes and headed to their next classes. Tatsuki and Renji bickered good-naturedly on the way, which Rukia found amusing. When they reached the next classroom, Rukia felt a pang of intimidation. The door was a swirling, black void, oozing a dark, liquid substance that seemed to beckon her into the unknown.

Renji noticed her apprehension and chuckled. "It's cool, Rukia. It may look intimidating, but Professor Nyx is actually pretty chill."

Rukia took a deep breath, trying to steady the nerves fluttering in her chest. She nodded, steeling herself as the door creaked open like an invitation into the unknown. Tatsuki grabbed her hand, offering reassurance. Together, they stepped into the room, where the flickering lanterns created an atmosphere of mystery, the shadows dancing like secrets waiting to be uncovered

They chose seats in the back, wary of tripping over the darkened surroundings. Renji sat next to Tatsuki, much to her visible irritation.

"Hello, class," came a smooth, enigmatic voice.

The students turned to see a mysterious woman with midnight-black hair, deep purple eyes, and an aura of enigmatic authority. She wore dark, flowing robes adorned with silver runes and a large, pointed hat that obscured much of her face, enhancing the aura of mystery. Rukia shivered slightly at the sight.

"This class is dedicated to Dark Arts and Mysticism," the professor began. "We will start by exploring the differences between dark and light magic, then delve into shadows and illusions, which are my personal favorites. Even if you're not a dark creature, you will learn about the dark arts in this class."

A collective gulp echoed through the room. Rukia felt a chill of dread but tried to stay focused. As the class progressed, Tatsuki slipped Rukia a note explaining that Professor Nyx was a shadow weaver and not as fearsome as she appeared.

After the class, Tatsuki and Renji offered to walk Rukia to her next class, which she gladly accepted. As they walked outside, Ichigo was already waiting for them. They all walked together for a bit, eventually parting ways as their paths diverged.

"So, something awesome about Professor Zephyr," Ichigo said with a grin, "is that if a non-flying student can do something with the wind or fly, even a little, we get to leave early."

Rukia's eyes sparkled at the prospect of leaving class early. When the door to Professor Zephyr's classroom opened, Rukia was greeted by a refreshing breeze that immediately lifted her spirits. The room resembled a sky filled with fluffy clouds, giving the impression of floating in the open air. The walls were adorned with gentle swirls of white and pale blue, mimicking the ever-changing patterns of the sky.

Professor Zephyr stood at the front of the classroom, a tall figure with wind-blown silver hair and a calm, serene expression. His eyes, a vivid sky blue, seemed to hold the very essence of the breeze. He wore a flowing robe that shimmered like sunlight dancing on water, further adding to his ethereal presence.

"Welcome to Air Magic and Aerodynamics," Professor Zephyr's voice was smooth and melodic, carrying effortlessly through the room. "In this class, we will explore the principles of air magic, including how to harness and manipulate the wind. Our studies will cover everything from basic gusts to advanced flight techniques."

Rukia took in the airy atmosphere of the room, her excitement growing. She had heard that Professor Zephyr was a renowned teacher, known for his ability to make even the most complex subjects seem accessible.

"Now," Professor Zephyr continued with a reassuring smile, "I want to make it clear that not everyone is expected to master flight by the end of this course. We will work on various aspects of air magic, and while flying is an exciting part, the focus is on understanding and controlling the wind in all its forms."

Rukia sighed in relief. She had been nervous about the prospect of needing to fly, but knowing that it was not a strict requirement eased her anxiety.

"The key objectives for this class include learning to create and control air currents, understanding the impact of wind on various magical and physical phenomena, and developing techniques to use wind as a tool or weapon," Professor Zephyr explained. "Each of you will progress at your own pace, and I encourage you to explore your individual strengths."

As Professor Zephyr spoke, he gestured to various stations around the room, each set up with different tools and magical artifacts related to air magic. There were shimmering crystals that seemed to float on air, and small wind turbines that spun with gentle breezes.

"We will start with some basic exercises today," he said, "focusing on creating small gusts of wind and manipulating air currents. These exercises will help you get a feel for how air magic works and how it can be used in various contexts."

The students listened attentively, and Rukia felt a surge of excitement. The idea of experimenting with wind magic and exploring its possibilities was thrilling. As Professor Zephyr continued outlining the day's activities, Rukia couldn't help but glance around, taking in the serene, cloud-like environment and feeling a sense of anticipation for the lessons to come.

When class ended, Rukia checked her phone and saw a series of texts. Tatsuki was heading to the training barracks, Senna was practicing her magic with Professor Nyx, and Orihime was with Professor Seriphina. Rukia sighed heavily. She had hoped to find someone to hang out with. Her last hope was her sister but noticed her sister's reply—a sad face indicating that Hisana would be studying with her roommates and guardians. Feeling a bit dejected, Rukia sighed deeply, allowing her feet to carry her wherever they may, momentarily forgetting Ichigo was still by her side.

"Are you okay?" Ichigo's voice broke through her thoughts.

Startled, Rukia jumped and turned to him, "Yeah, it's just that everyone seems to be doing their own thing."

Ichigo looked at her with a sympathetic smile. "Hmm. How about we go to the lake?"

Rukia's eyes lit up with curiosity. "There's a lake?"

Ichigo gave a mischievous grin, "You'll love this. Or, you know, hate it," Ichigo said with a smirk, raising an eyebrow as he glanced back at her. "But at least it'll be interesting."

Ichigo quickly took her hand without waiting for permission and leading her through a maze of quiet paths. As they approached, Rukia saw a large, serene lake that stretched out like a mini ocean. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding area was lush with greenery, creating a tranquil escape from the hustle of campus life. Ichigo explained that the lake was designed for marine creatures, and it even had underwater dorms.

Rukia marveled at the sight. "This place is incredible. I had no idea we had something like this here."

Ichigo nodded. "Yeah, it's a pretty special spot. So, Icewoman, right?"

Rukia nodded, "Yes and fae but I don't know which kind."

Ichigo's eyes twinkled with interest. "Can you make icicles?"

Rukia nodded enthusiastically and walked to the edge of the lake. Rukia cupped some water in her hands and concentrated, trying to summon her ice magic. As she focused trying to make that icicle appear she scowled, nothing happened. Frustration clawed at her as the water slipped through her fingers.

Ichigo's quiet chuckle pierced her concentration. "Rukia, you're too tense," he said gently. "You're just starting out, and you don't have the years of adaptation that others might have. Ice magic can be tricky. Think of something that makes you happy or even something that makes you mad. It might help you channel your power."

Rukia nodded, taking a deep breath. She recalled the joy of her and Hisana's childhood snowball fights, the exhilaration of crafting her first ice sculpture, and how she had always felt more at home in winter's embrace. As the memories flowed, a flicker of cool energy began to dance at her fingertips, sending a rush of hope through her.

Wednesday and Thursday passed smoothly. Rukia enjoyed breakfast with her sister, spent time with her roommates, and appreciated Ichigo's company. However, as Thursday night transitioned into Friday morning, Rukia found herself unable to sleep. She slipped into comfortable sweatpants and a tank top, careful not to disturb her roommates.

At three in the morning, she decided to visit the library, which was open 24/7 for students. The college library was an expansive, multi-story building filled with countless books, scrolls, and magical tomes. The air was rich with the scent of aged paper and a hint of lavender. Shelves of deep mahogany lined the walls, and the reading areas were furnished with plush chairs and sturdy tables. Magical lanterns floated above, casting a warm, ambient glow. There were also private study rooms and enchanted sections accessible only to those with the proper permissions.

As Rukia wandered through the library, something drew her to the section on magical history. It was a topic currently covered by Professor Aeliana, but Rukia felt an inexplicable pull. Her steps seemed guided as she moved to a shelf dedicated to historical accounts. Her hand reached out almost instinctively, pulling out a book titled 'The War Against Evil'. The cover was embossed with intricate, swirling designs, hinting at the book's depth and significance. Rukia opened it, feeling a surge of anticipation as she began to read.

While Rukia was engrossed in the book, she heard a sudden noise that made her jump. She quickly turned, her heart racing, and saw three shadowy figures huddled in a corner of the library. Without a second thought, she grabbed the book and ducked behind a nearby shelf, her instincts urging her to hide in the dimly lit corners of the library. She took a deep, steadying breath and strained to listen.

"Do you have the damn book, Luppi?" one of the voices growled.

Rukia couldn't see the figures clearly, but she could hear the hurried rustling of papers and tense voices.

"What if someone is in here? Master wants this to be quick and clean. I am not in the mood to get scolded by him!" another voice snapped, clearly frustrated.

"Loly, shut up! Maybe the book is in the Underworld?" the third voice suggested, sounding annoyed.

"Why would a book called 'The War Against Evil' be in the Underworld? It's supposed to be here. Master said it would be," Loly retorted sharply.

Rukia's eyes widened as she glanced at the book she was holding. It matched the description the figures had given. Her heart pounded as the weight of the danger dawned on her, yet a strange curiosity stirred within her. Should she flee? Or was there something here—something she needed to uncover before it was too late? She swallowed her fear, barely daring to breathe, and slowly edged away from the shelf, her movements as silent as the shadows. Her foot caught on a corner of the counter, causing a faint clatter. She froze, her breath catching in her throat as the figures stopped their rummaging.

"Someone is here! We need to find them and eliminate them—what if they heard us?" Loly's voice was filled with alarm.

"Fine, fine. Loly, you do it," one of the figures said.

"WHAT? No, Menloly, you do it!" Loly protested.

Rukia's heart pounded in her chest. She could barely breathe, her fear escalating with every second. She was on the verge of hyperventilating, struggling to keep her terror in check. She needed help, and she felt utterly helpless as the figures' voices grew closer.

"Hey, Loly, your arm is icing over!" one of the figures shouted.

The tension in the room increased, and Rukia's panic only grew. Desperately, she tried to think of a way out of the situation, but her mind was clouded by fear. The library's shadows seemed to close in around her.

Suddenly, she felt a hand cover her mouth. She tried to scream, but the hand was firm and steady. A soothing voice whispered, "Sleep."

Rukia struggled against the intruder, fighting to stay awake, but the exhaustion and fear took their toll. Her vision blurred, her mind reeling in confusion. What was happening to her? Panic clawed at her chest, but her limbs grew heavier with each passing second, the fog closing in before she could even scream. She struggled for breath, but the darkness surged, drowning her in its depths before she could resist any further.
