Chapter 7

The weekend passed by in a blur as Rukia and Hisana decided to stay in and study for their upcoming exams, the pressure of them looming like an impending storm. It wasn't often they had uninterrupted time together, and though they had spent their childhood side by side, college life had kept them apart more than either would have liked. This weekend offered a rare chance to reconnect and feel as close as they once had. They even took a break from studying to FaceTime their aunt, Shirayuki. Her radiant smile lit up the screen, her voice full of warmth and pride as she encouraged the sisters to support one another, especially in times of stress.

Over the weekend, Hisana introduced Rukia to her roommates, Yui and Nozomi. Nozomi, with her striking green hair and cool gray eyes, exuded a quiet intensity that commanded attention effortlessly. In contrast, Yui's long brown hair and light brown eyes projected a warmth that made Rukia feel instantly at ease. It was clear the bond between Hisana and her roommates went deeper than mere living arrangements—they were trusted friends, bound by shared experiences. Rukia felt grateful for the comfortable time they all shared.

Between study sessions, Hisana helped Rukia refine her control over her powers. The bond between them deepened with each lesson. Hisana's patient guidance brought Rukia reassurance, and slowly, she began to believe she might one day master the magic within her. For now, every small step forward felt like a victory.

Rukia also spent time with Ichigo. Their study sessions were punctuated with easy laughter and snacks, and little by little, they peeled back the layers of each other's lives. Yet, despite their growing closeness, Ichigo remained tight-lipped about his true nature. This only piqued Rukia's curiosity, but sensing that what he withheld carried its own complexities, she chose not to press him.

Their group frequently visited the Nexus Dimension—a refuge from the pressures of magical education. The weekends there were fleeting but full of lighthearted moments, a reprieve before Monday pulled Rukia back into routine. By midweek, she had found her rhythm. No longer lost in the sprawling halls, she had grown more familiar with her classes. Lunchtime had become a cherished time to gather with friends, share stories, and laugh at the chaos of magical learning. Sometimes Hisana and her group joined, adding even more energy to the table.

However, combat training grew increasingly difficult. Professor Thorne seemed determined to push them each day, crafting scenarios that required skill, quick reflexes, and clever problem-solving. Rukia struggled at first, but with each lesson, she noticed improvement. The training with Hisana was beginning to pay off, boosting her confidence.

Wednesday night found Rukia lying awake in bed, her thoughts circling back to the ancient book hidden in her desk. She rarely took it out, reading only when she felt an inexplicable pull toward it. That night, the urge to read was strong, but her mind was too restless. At two in the morning, she made a decision: she needed to clear her head. The library, recently reopened after last week's incident, called to her. Confident in her improving combat skills, she felt sure she wouldn't be caught off guard this time.

Slipping into sweats and an oversized shirt, Rukia quietly left her room, careful not to disturb her sleeping friends. The cool night air greeted her as she made her way through the silent halls. The eerie stillness of the castle-like structure felt both intimidating and strangely beautiful under the moonlight.

Upon arrival, the library was as magnificent as she remembered. Rows upon rows of books stretched to the ceiling, the scent of parchment and ink thick in the air. It was peaceful, but Rukia remained hyper-aware, alert to every shadow and flicker of movement. She wandered deeper, her fingers trailing along ancient spines, not searching for anything specific but hoping to distract her restless mind.

A sudden chill ran up her spine. Rukia paused, forcing herself to calm down, hands rising instinctively to defend herself. "Is someone there? Show yourself!" Her voice echoed through the quiet.

To her surprise, a boy about her height with big blue eyes and short black hair appeared, stepping through a bookshelf as if it were air. He bowed immediately. "I'm sorry!"

Rukia's eyes widened. "That voice… it was you the other night!"

The boy looked down, cheeks flushing. "I'm sorry! I saw how panicked you were and just wanted to help. I didn't mean to scare you." Rukia hesitated but relaxed as he raised his hands in a peaceful gesture. "I mean you no harm. My name is Hanataro Yamada. I'm… well, I guess you'd call me a spirit or a ghost. I was a student here and graduated about a year ago. I'm now the librarian."

Rukia took a deep breath and bowed slightly. "I'm Rukia Sode No."

Hanataro smiled. "I know. Perks of the job—I know all the students. You're Hisana's twin, right?" Rukia returned his smile, surprised. Hanataro led her to a quiet corner, and she asked him about the night of the trance.

Hanataro sighed, rubbing his neck. "The intruders escaped through a portal before I could do anything. You were hyperventilating, so I put a sleep trance on you. They were looking for a book—'The War Against Evil,' which you and your guardian took. I moved certain books to a hidden area and even checked them out under a pseudonym for safety."

"Did you report the intruders to the professors?"

Hanataro shook his head. "No. Sometimes, it's better to investigate quietly. I'll keep an eye out, but I doubt they'll return so soon."

Rukia nodded, though it left her unsettled. Both Hanataro and Ichigo seemed to keep things under wraps, and she wondered just how deep this mystery ran.

"So," Hanataro floated higher, "do you know what type of Fae you are yet?"

Rukia shook her head, explaining her encounter with a creature who had offered her different foods from each Fae court, except the Dark Fae. She shared how she felt drawn to each but was unsure of its meaning.

Hanataro listened intently and disappeared briefly, returning with three large, ancient-looking books. "These might help." He handed her the first, beautifully adorned in icy blue and white designs. "This one's called The History of Ice Women. It should help you understand your heritage and powers connected to ice."

Rukia's eyes widened at the intricate cover as Hanataro brought out the second book. "This is about the Light Fae's history—how they split into different courts based on seasons. It should help you figure out your affinity to the Fae."

The last book swirled with dark purples and blacks, almost eerie. "This one's for the Dark Fae. But be careful—it should only be read at night, and it's not technically allowed for students. Keep it hidden."

Rukia thanked him, overwhelmed by the vast knowledge she now held. They talked late into the night, their conversation flowing easily in the quiet library until morning. Hanataro eventually urged her to head back for rest. Tucking the books beneath her clothing, she slipped into the quiet corridors, returning to her dorm undetected.

Back in her room, she carefully hid the books under her bed. Exhausted but restless, she took a cold shower to clear her mind. The icy water soothed her, but thoughts of Hanataro's words, the intruders, and the growing mystery lingered.

Friday arrived swiftly. Dressed in her "combat dress" and with her hair tied back in a high ponytail, Rukia met her friends in the bustling cafeteria. Hisana's group soon joined, adding to the lively chatter.

After breakfast, everyone made their way to the combat room. Professor Thorne, looking as rugged as ever, stood beside the elegant Professor Seraphina, who commanded the room with her poise.

"Good morning," Thorne's deep voice boomed. "When we call your name, you'll receive your assignment."

Seraphina smiled, her voice a stark contrast. "Good luck to all of you."

Hisana's group was called first, and Rukia listened closely, relieved when she heard her sister was being sent to the Arcane cities—a relatively safe mission. Next, it was their group's turn.

"Alright, boys," Thorne began, then corrected himself, glancing at Seraphina. "And ladies. You'll have an easier mission today, a reward for last week's hard work. We're sending you to Lucious Lagoon. Retrieve a book called Life of the Sea. Simple enough," he added.

Rukia noticed a glint of amusement in Thorne's eyes as he spoke, making her a bit uneasy. "The royals are well aware that students will be there, so there's no need to worry about any unwanted interruptions."

Seraphina stepped forward, her tone light and pleasant yet laced with unmistakable authority. With a slight smile, she handed each of them a piece of green, luminescent kelp, its glow casting an eerie light over their faces. "This will allow you to breathe underwater for precisely three hours—no more. That should give you ample time to find the book and return. But remember, we won't be pulling you out if things go wrong. You'll need to rely on your skills to create a portal and bring yourselves back."

A tense silence followed as the weight of her words settled in. Tatsuki shifted uneasily, her expression more apprehensive than the others, but she gave a firm nod, her resolve clear.

Seraphina's smile widened, her hands clapping together in a strangely cheerful gesture. "Good luck!" she chimed, a touch too brightly.

One by one, they swallowed the kelp, the taste sharp and briny. The world around them shifted instantly, a surreal distortion enveloping their senses until they found themselves submerged in the vast, cerulean depths of Lucious Lagoon. The sensation was disorienting—a blend of weightlessness and suspension, as though they were drifting through a dream.

"Everyone okay?" Uryu's voice rang out, surprisingly clear and unhampered by the water.

Rukia blinked, momentarily taken aback by how they could speak. Uryu, always the scholar, explained, "The kelp lets us breathe and communicate down here. Practical magic."

They began to swim deeper, and Rukia's eyes widened at the vivid world unfolding before them. Schools of silver and sapphire fish darted in synchronized dances, weaving through clusters of coral in brilliant reds, purples, and golds. Strange bioluminescent plants lined the sandy floor, their light pulsing in rhythm with the currents, casting a soft glow over everything. The sight was breathtaking, as if they had slipped into another realm entirely. Yet, beneath the beauty, a nagging unease gnawed at Rukia. This mission felt deceptively straightforward, but something told her that finding the book might not be the main objective for the group.

They continued their descent, and soon, the shadowy outline of an underwater city appeared in the distance. The city was mesmerizing—jellyfish drifted above them like floating lanterns, their soft light illuminating massive coral structures that resembled castles. Merfolk and other magical beings bustled through the coral streets, each movement graceful and fluid, as though the entire city was alive and breathing.

Tatsuki remained uncharacteristically quiet, her expression unreadable. Normally, she would trade sharp quips with Renji, who, even now, kept throwing casual remarks into the air. But Tatsuki's silence didn't go unnoticed—Renji's eyes flickered toward her, his usual cocky demeanor covering a hint of concern he didn't let show.

Finally, they arrived at the Sea of Knowledge, a vast structure radiating with ancient magic. The coral-encrusted walls shimmered with runes that seemed to shift as they moved, whispering secrets too old to comprehend. Inside, the glow softened, creating a mystical ambiance that made each shelf of rare books and scrolls look as if they floated in a dreamy haze.

"This place is incredible…" Rukia whispered, her voice filled with awe.

As they approached the librarian, a graceful mermaid with shimmering scales, Ichigo stepped forward confidently. "We're here for The Life of the Sea," he stated with calm authority.

The librarian nodded, her calm, observant eyes meeting Ichigo's as she retrieved a book, handing it over. "Here you go," she said, her tone polite but distant. "Feel free to explore the rest of the collection."

Renji leaned in with a grin, attempting to break the tension. "So, uh… do mermaids eat sushi, or…?"

Chad rolled his eyes and, without a word, pulled Renji back, sparing him further embarrassment.

Just then, Rukia caught a faint murmur from one of the nearby aisles—three familiar voices, barely audible but unmistakable. Her heart raced as she caught fragments of their conversation.

"Why do we always get the boring jobs?" complained a voice she recognized as Loly's.

"Loly, keep it down," hissed another voice. It was the unknown voice she heard.

"Luppi's right, Loly," came a third voice—Menoly, her tone resigned. "This is a critical job. We can't afford to be sloppy. Start searching for The Sea Creatures of War."

Rukia's pulse quickened. The Sea Creatures of War had to be a book of importance and the intruders' presence made it clear that this book held vital exchanged a tense glance with Ichigo, silently alerting him to the presence of potential enemies.

Rukia approached the librarian, her tone calm but urgent. "Excuse me," she murmured. "Where can I find The Sea Creatures of War?"

The librarian's pleasant expression faltered, her eyes narrowing. "That book is restricted, accessible only to nobility under royal decree," she said, her voice suddenly guarded.

Uryu stepped up, his tone confident. "It's Ishida's family business," he announced smoothly.

The librarian hesitated, caught between her duty and protocol, but the mention of the Ishida family made her relent. "Follow me," she said, The group stayed back sensing something was wrong as Ichigo and Rukia followed behind the librarian where she led them to a secluded section deep within the library. The air grew denser, almost as if they were entering a hidden domain where knowledge held its own power, pulsing quietly in the shelves.

The librarian pulled out The Sea Creatures of War, its sea-green cover adorned with golden etchings that rippled like waves under her touch. "Be cautious," she warned, handing the book over. "The knowledge within is not for the faint-hearted."

Ichigo accepted it, his expression unreadable. "Thank you."

Just then, Rukia caught a glimpse of the intruders' shadows near the edge of the aisle, inching closer.

Renji and Tatsuki positioned themselves near the entrance, their casual stances masking a readiness to defend. Orihime and Uryu stood by, poised to act as decoys if needed. Chad and Senna created a light disturbance in a far aisle, "accidentally" knocking over a few scrolls. Rukia had never looked up, making sure not to make contact with the intruders she encountered from the library that night. She noticed the figures of the intruders snapped to attention, momentarily distracted, allowing Rukia and Ichigo to slip further away toward the exit.

The team coordinated their movements smoothly, making a swift but careful escape. As they gained distance from the library, a sense of accomplishment flickered between them. Despite the tension and lingering threats, they had completed their mission.

Just as they were about to leave the city's edge, however, the effects of the kelp began to wane. The tightness settled in Rukia's chest, breaths growing shallower with each passing second. Tatsuki was already clutching her chest, panic in her eyes. Orihime's hands trembled as she fought to stay calm, while Senna's eyes darted around, lips forming silent words as she struggled to remember a spell to buy them time.

Renji, sensing the urgency, grabbed Tatsuki and motioned to a dark void appearing nearby—a portal. He signaled frantically as he led the way through, the others moving in unison, their once-coordinated strokes now wild and frantic. Rukia was panicking, her lungs screaming for air, her vision blurring as she fought to keep up.

Ichigo's expression cut through her panic, his eyes fierce as he swam to her. Without a word, he wrapped his arm around her waist, propelling them both toward the portal, the darkness looming closer just as her vision began to blur…

Rukia collapsed onto solid ground, coughing violently as she gulped in sweet, cold air. Her throat burned from the strain, but relief flooded her as oxygen finally filled her lungs. Around her, the others were sprawled out, breathing heavily.

"Where...where are we?" Rukia managed to ask between coughs, her voice raspy.

Everyone's gaze shifted to Renji, who was still catching his breath but had an uneasy look on his face.

"I... I don't know," he admitted, shaking his head. "I didn't fully open a portal. It just... appeared."

Rukia looked around, her eyes slowly adjusting to the dim light. Shadows clung to the walls of the narrow, ancient hallway, where a few flickering candles provided a feeble, trembling glow. The air was thick, laden with the scent of damp stone and salt, and each breath felt weighted, as though the silence itself had a hold on them. Moisture trickled down the cold stone walls, glistening like dark veins under the flickering candlelight, and somewhere in the distance, the faint echo of dripping water filled the oppressive stillness.

A shiver ran down her spine. Whatever this place was, it felt wrong—like they weren't supposed to be there, like they'd stumbled into something meant to stay hidden.

"Great," Ichigo muttered, glancing around cautiously, his voice barely above a whisper. "We've gone from one mess straight into another."

The words barely seemed to penetrate the thick silence. Each of them stood frozen, breaths shallow, the realization sinking in that they had no idea where they were—or what might be lurking in the shadows. The flickering candlelight cast warped shadows across their faces, highlighting the worry etched in each expression.

An unsettling chill swept over them, as if the very air was aware of their presence, watching. As they exchanged uncertain glances, a low, eerie sound began to creep through the silence—a faint scratching, like claws against stone, drifting toward them from deeper within the passageway.

They hadn't escaped danger just yet. And, in the suffocating silence of this place, they couldn't be sure they ever would.
