Chapter 62

Monday July 8th 2013, Special Victim's Unit, 16th Precinct, Manhattan

Olivia was startled from her thoughts by a knock on her office door. It was still early, early enough she couldn't imagine who would also be in the squad room before their shift started.

"Come in," she called from her position on the couch in her office.

"Detective Slootmaekers?" Olivia glanced at the watch on her wrist as her newest Detective entered her office, remaining a few feet away, "It's a little early isn't it?"

The young woman took a few steps towards Olivia, but remained standing by the other end of the couch.

"I wanted to get a head start on my first day, I know I have a lot to learn and I want to be prepare-"

Olivia held up her hand, "I can see how eager you are, and while I appreciate your tenacity and obvious dedication to your craft, unfortunately in police work and specifically our unit, a lot of the training happens on the job."

Jet nodded as she stood awkwardly in the office with her arms folded over her chest, "I know I can't prep for a case but-"

"Victim," Olivia blurted out.

"I'm sorry?" Jet raised one of her dark perfectly shaped eyebrows.

Olivia propped her hand up, silently suggesting Jet to take a seat on the opposite end of the couch.

"These are no longer cases, they're victims, behind every phone call, email, and assignment is a victim. These aren't just case numbers, you can't hide behind a computer or blackberry anymore, there are real people who's lives will never be the same from the moment you meet them. You are meeting victims on the worst day of their lives, but hopefully with your help, you'll be able to guide them and help them on their journey to becoming survivors."

Olivia placed her hand on the space between them on the couch, and leaned towards the young Detective, she moved her head, purposely trying to catch the new woman's eye, "And if they ever do begin to feel like a case number to you, that's when you need to speak up, come to me, go to your partner, it doesn't matter, but that's when you need to worry."

Jet gave her Captain a small smile, "Thank you, I know you're a very busy woman, I appreciate you taking the time. John goes on, and on about a lot of stuff, I'm sure you've heard a theory or two of his, but the way he talks about his job, his colleagues, well I could tell from a young age that he was very passionate about SVU, and he cares deeply for the people that work here. I'm honoured that I can now count myself as a part of this unit as well."

"I'm glad you feel that way," Olivia pushed herself off her couch and walked to her desk. She sat in her office chair while rummaging through one of her desk drawers.

"And on that positive note, these are for you," she placed the new Detective's glock, and badge on her table.

Jet had followed her over and stared down at her shiny new shield.

"I'll make you proud," Jet declared.

Olivia shook her head, "Just be yourself, that's all I ask, you do not need to impress me Jet."

Jet gave the Captain a closed lip grin, which the older woman assumed was as close to a smile as she was going to get, "If it's okay with you I'd like to get a jump on my day, John showed me around when I was here last week…"

"Of course, and you know where your desk is?"

"Yes," Jet walked back towards the door she had left open, "Thank you again for this opportunity."

"As I told you before, I had no idea of your relation to Munch. I still wish you had come to the party on the weekend, you could've mingled with a lot of your coworkers, in a setting outside of the precinct," Olivia reiterated.

Jet shook her head no, her short black locks shifted from the movement, "I didn't want to pull focus, and I mostly met everyone last week. Did you have a good time?" she inquired politely.

"It was," Olivia paused, "A farewell of sorts that's for sure."

"That's nice, I know I can't fill their shoes but I will do my best," Jet stated from the doorway.

"Just be yourself, that's why I hired you, I don't need another Carisi, or Detective Stabler out there," Olivia pointed at the squad room through her blinds.

"But I do need Detective Slootmaekers, I need the woman who impressed me with her knowledge, and skills. I need that woman with great scores on the range, and an even better intuition in her heart and brain, to show up every day. You do that, you'll make a hell of a difference in the lives of the people you're going to meet."

"Thank you Captain!" Jet replied as she left her office.

Olivia settled back in her seat when she heard the click of her office door. She couldn't help recalling the last time she hired a new Detective, and the morning she gave him his new gun and shield. She had just met him and already in that meeting she couldn't take her eyes off him.

She released a breath she had been holding. A part of her was happy that Munch had shown Jet the lay of the land. She didn't think she'd be able to watch her put her stuff on Elliot's old desk. Without even looking at it she was suddenly confronted with mixed emotions. It probably didn't help that the last time she saw it, her and Elliot were having sex on it, and under it. She was thankful for Lysol. But Jet was going to be Nick's new partner, it made sense for Jet to use Elliot's desk. That just left Rollins by herself, but with Munch doing less work in the field every month, she had decided that SVU would have their first throuple. She hoped with their multiple years of experience combined, that Fin, Munch, and Rollins would work well together. 1PP refused to give her the go-ahead to hire 2 new Detectives despite the fact she lost 2 Detectives.

Even though he had only been a Detective in her unit for 6 months, the impact Elliot had on her life was ginormous.

Good and bad. She sometimes wondered if they hadn't denied that their relationship was purely physical for so long, if things would be better for them in the presence.

Jets question had unintentionally provoked her thoughts to wander back to the party on the weekend.

In hindsight many things could have been avoided. She couldn't help wondering how the other people involved were feeling that morning.

The one thing she absolutely knew without a shadow of a doubt, was that many lives would never be the same again.
