Chapter 1: Prologue

Shells Town – Soul Reaper Base #125

The training hall reeked of sweat and dust, the rhythmic thud of fists against pads filling the air. Recruits lined the walls, stretching sore limbs or nursing fresh bruises from the morning drills. In the center, their instructor—a tall, wiry man with sharp eyes—moved effortlessly through the sparring rings, each of his opponents falling one after another as if their efforts meant nothing.

Among the recruits, Rukia Kuchiki rolled her shoulders, watching intently. The entrance exam loomed closer, and with each passing day, the weight of it settled heavier on her. Here, only the strongest would earn a place. Weakness was not an option.

She flexed her fingers, her gaze dissecting the fights before her. She wasn't just resting—she was studying. Every misstep, every hesitation, she committed to memory, ensuring she wouldn't make the same mistakes when her turn came.

The instructor dusted off his hands as the final match ended. "Even though you all lost, I saw improvement," he declared, voice sharp but not unkind. "Keep working. Apply what I've taught you before the entrance test."

Groans rippled through the recruits as they dragged themselves upright. Some muttered curses under their breath, while others pushed through the exhaustion in silence. Rukia was among the latter. She stretched her stiff muscles, then followed the crowd outside into the warm afternoon light.

The days blurred into a relentless cycle—training before sunrise, drills beneath the unyielding sun, and exhaustion settling into their bones.

Across the field, Senshu, the instructor walked alongside a senior officer dressed in a deep-blue cloak. Their conversation drifted through the humid air.

"The entrance exam is coming up," Senshu mused, his sharp eyes scanning the recruits. "With the world as it is, we need as much young blood as possible."

"Yes, yes." The officer adjusted his hat with an air of boredom. "I'm eager to see who rises above the rest." A grin tugged at his bearded face.

If Rukia heard them, she gave no sign. Words wouldn't secure her place—only results would.

Two Days Before the Exam

Shells Town's marketplace buzzed with life, the air thick with the scent of grilled fish and fresh produce. Vendors called out their wares, laughter and chatter mingling with the clatter of wooden stalls.

"Rukia, dear! It's been weeks since I've seen you!"

She turned toward the familiar voice. Behind a fruit stand, an elderly woman beamed at her, flour dusting her hands from the morning's baking. She had taken a liking to Rukia early on, treating her like family despite her being a stranger in town.

Rukia offered a small smile. "I've been training a lot. The entrance exam is only a few days away."

The woman nodded knowingly. "Ah, yes. Everyone's been talking about it. The whole town is eager to see what comes of it!"

Rukia chuckled softly. Strange how a place that still didn't quite feel like home could offer such warmth. These small kindnesses—this sense of belonging—were something she hadn't expected.

She bowed slightly before taking her leave, a fresh fruit in hand.

As she walked back to the base, voices from the marketplace lingered in the air.

"Did you hear about the Hollow attack yesterday?" a vendor whispered.

His companion shrugged. "It's as common as ever. If you ask me, the officers aren't doing enough to keep them in check."

Rukia's grip tightened around the fruit in her palm. Civilians always spoke as if keeping Hollows at bay was easy—like they had any idea what it was like to face one.

Shaking off her irritation, she continued toward the base. The guards gave her only a cursory glance before letting her through.

Inside, she climbed the stairs to the seventeenth floor, where her dorm was located. The long day had worn her down, and she didn't fight the exhaustion pulling at her limbs. She changed out of her training uniform, slipped into her bed, and let the sounds of her sleeping roommates lull her into rest.

"Two days left," she murmured to herself, a mix of tension and anticipation coiling in her chest.

Every bruise, every sleepless night—it had all led her here.

She closed her eyes, allowing herself a well-earned sleep.

Exam Day

Dressed in her shihakusho, Rukia stepped out of her dorm alongside the others. The base was alive with movement, recruits assembling in neat rows, their energy a mix of nervous anticipation and steely determination.

A massive ship loomed in the harbor, its polished wood gleaming beneath the early morning sun. The docks had been built near the base to ensure tight security over Shells Town's imports and exports.

Near the docks, Officer Karamatsu leaned against a railing, a cigarette dangling from his lips. Smoke curled lazily around his face as he surveyed the gathered recruits.

"Damn," he muttered, exhaling a slow puff. "That's a sight to see."

One by one, the recruits boarded under the guidance of the sailors. Rukia followed the flow of bodies, her heart hammering in her chest.

Questions swirled in her mind. What kind of exam would it be? Where were they going? Would she pass?

Before she could dwell on it further, Karamatsu cleared his throat. The murmuring recruits fell silent as he stepped forward.

"Good morning, everyone. As you all know, I'm Officer Karamatsu, and I've been in charge of this base for the past two years. I'll admit, this is the biggest crowd of candidates I've seen. That's admirable."

He paused, letting his gaze sweep across the recruits before continuing.

"However… this isn't just some routine test."

The air grew heavier.

"As Soul Reapers, you will risk your lives. You must be prepared to face death. That's why this exam exists—to weed out those incapable of handling real combat. I took this exam five years ago, and now I stand before you as an officer. It's been a long road, and there's still more ahead."

His eyes flicked toward the sky, as if recalling something distant. Then, his gaze snapped back to them.

"I'm not one for long speeches, but I expect you all to give it everything you've got. If you fail, you'll get a second chance—but push as hard as you can the first time and leave the rest to fate. Understood?"

"YES, SIR!" the recruits shouted in unison.

Karamatsu nodded, satisfied. "Good. Keep that spirit when it matters."

Without another word, he turned and headed toward the captain's cabin. The ship's captain greeted him with a nod.

"Alright, Captain. Lead the way—we're ready."

With a grunt of acknowledgment, the captain pushed the throttle lever. The ship's engines rumbled to life.

Rukia braced herself as the ship pulled away from the docks.

The examination had begun.
