"Why did you have to do that?" Baird demands as he lets Gerri into his office.

"Do what?" says Gerri. She can still taste Mo's blood from where she sunk her teeth into his fingers.

"I could have just talked to him. I'm sure if he knew we were dating…" His voice trails off as Gerri glares at him.

"So it's okay for him to grope women, as long as they're not your girlfriend?"

"No, I didn't say that." Baird hesitates. "If he goes to Logan…"

"I'm indispensable to Logan. I've buried too many bodies for him."

"Still… he and Lester have been friends for years. If he persuades Logan to fire you…"

"You can put in a good word for me, can't you? You're his old friend too. You're godfather to his daughter."

Baird sighs and rubs his face in the way that she usually finds endearing. "Logan doesn't know about us. He might be—"

"What? Jealous?" Gerri raises her eyebrows. "You're worried about your own career if the boss finds out you're fucking the pretty young thing in the office like he wanted to, is that it?"

"I'm worried about both of us," Baird defends. "You think Logan won't fire us both? Because he will."

"Then I'll bite his fucking fingers off too."

Baird shakes his head. "Who even are you?"

"Who do you want me to be? Sweet little Geraldine from Kentucky?" Gerri exaggerates her natural accent, stepping towards Baird. "I thought you liked this? Me, being strong?"

"I do. I love it, and I love you, but we have to be practical."

Gerri's eyes soften at the love mention. She reaches out to cup Baird's face with both hands. "You're the sweetest man I've ever met… but you're a fucking coward."

She leaves him alone in the room, his face looking like she had slapped him.
