Chapter 3: Primrose Empath Part 3

October 19, 2001 – Friday

Crest Hills Psychiatric Hospital

Buffy and Dawn moved in unison, flanking Prue to offer their support as they followed Piper, Phoebe, and Leo. The hallway seemed to stretch ahead of them, a path toward an uncertain confrontation with the unknown.

Buffy's quiet muttering held a note of discomfort, the familiarity of the surroundings stirring memories she would rather have left behind. "I never pictured I would be back here," she admitted, her voice a mixture of resignation and unease.

Dawn's reaction was swift, her eyes widening with realization as she processed the situation. This was the place where their father, Hank, had Buffy committed when she had mentioned fighting vampires to her parents. "I thought that was in L.A.?" she whispered, her voice tinged with surprise.

Buffy's response held a layer of explanation, her words revealing a family secret. "No," she clarified, her gaze meeting Dawn's. "Dad didn't want it to reach the papers that he had his daughter committed. The scandal wouldn't look good with potential business clients. Or at least that's what he seemed to believe."

As the emotions swirled and tensions simmered, Prue found herself caught between Dawn and Buffy. The empathic ability she currently possessed allowed her to feel the depth of anger that Buffy harbored toward her father.

As they reached the reception desk, the nurse's voice cut through the tension, her gaze focused on Phoebe as she signed them in. "And who are you here to visit today?"

Phoebe's response was swift, her tone maintaining a veneer of composure even amidst the palpable tension that hung in the air. "Um, we came to visit our father," she explained, her words carrying a subtle thread of deception.

"What's his name?" the nurse inquired, her voice holding a hint of skepticism.

"Dad?" Phoebe responded, her answer serving as a brief yet deliberate confirmation.

"This is a psychiatric facility. We can't very well let every—" The nurse's words were interrupted as Piper intervened with her power, freezing the nurse in place.

Leo's gaze shifted to Buffy and Dawn, his expression carrying a mix of concern and understanding. "This place will be a minefield for Prue," he acknowledged, recognizing the potential pitfalls that awaited her empathic abilities within the facility's walls.

Dawn's response held a touch of determination, a shared commitment to ensuring Prue's safety. "We'll keep Mom here next to us," she proposed, a practical solution to minimize the risk of Prue being overwhelmed.

However, Prue's perspective differed as she weighed the implications of their plan. "No, if Vince comes in, I need to be there to reverse the spell," she asserted, her voice conveying a sense of responsibility and determination.

Buffy's concern was palpable as she offered her perspective, drawing from her own experiences. "Are you sure?" she asked, her tone carrying both caution and empathy. "He's right. This place will be a minefield. Just as high school was for me when I was telepathic."

Prue's conviction remained unwavering; her decision firmly made. "I'm sure," she affirmed, her voice reflecting a readiness to face the challenges ahead.

"Okay," Buffy acquiesced, her tone marked by a mixture of understanding and support. She and Dawn took the lead, guiding Prue into the room where the patients had gathered.

The atmosphere in the room held a mix of anticipation and tension as Buffy, Prue and Dawn sat at a table, their attention focused on the man who seemed to match the description from Phoebe's premonition. Phoebe's observation was immediate, her voice carrying a note of recognition. "That looks like the guy from my premonition," she remarked, drawing attention to the figure they had been tracking.

Piper and Phoebe moved purposefully toward Father Thomas; the air charged with the gravity of their mission. Phoebe initiated the conversation, her words carrying a blend of uncertainty and determination. "Hi, excuse me, um, I know this is probably going to sound crazy but are you an empath?" she inquired, her tone a mixture of cautious hope.

Father Thomas' response carried a blend of resignation and skepticism, his words reflecting the weariness he had likely faced from others. "You people don't have to humor me, you know. I know you don't believe me," he acknowledged, his voice tinged with a sense of self-awareness.

Piper's explanation cut through the uncertainty, offering clarity about their true nature and intent. "No, uh, we're not doctors or patients, we're, we're witches," she clarified, her words revealing their identity and purpose. "And we're looking for the empath who cursed a demon."

Father Thomas' realization was evident as he absorbed their words, his understanding deepening as the truth became apparent. "I was working as a priest, helping people when it came after me," he recounted, a mixture of memories and newfound recognition coloring his tone.

Piper sought further confirmation, referencing the name they had for the entity. "You mean Vince?" she inquired, seeking to establish a connection between their understanding and his experience.

"Is that what it calls itself?" Father Thomas responded with a touch of curiosity, acknowledging the name. "Vinceres is a demonic assassin. Timeless, unstoppable."

Phoebe's curiosity led her to a key question, her voice carrying a mixture of intrigue and urgency. "But you stopped him. How?" she inquired, her eyes fixed on Father Thomas, eager to uncover the solution that had eluded them.

Father Thomas' words carried a sense of resignation as he recounted the pivotal moment that had changed the course of his life. "When the demon took my throat to kill me, I laid my hands on him as if to heal him," he explained, his voice conveying the unexpected turn of events that had transpired.

Phoebe's response reflected her understanding, her words resonating with the realization of what had occurred. "And you gave him your power," she concluded, her tone carrying a mix of insight and empathy.

Father Thomas acknowledged her assessment with a somber affirmation. "Yes, I didn't know if I could but I did. I cursed Vinceres and myself," he confessed, revealing the complexity of his actions and the consequences they had borne.

Piper's curiosity led her to probe further, seeking to understand the extent of Father Thomas' sacrifice. "How did you curse yourself?" she inquired, her voice holding a mixture of intrigue and compassion.

Father Thomas sighed, the weight of his choice evident in his response. "I'm staring at eternity on earth with no gift and no reason to be," he confessed, the regret and resignation in his tone reflecting the magnitude of his sacrifice.

Piper's response carried a glimmer of hope, a promise of redemption. "Well, I can't help you with the eternity part but I can give you a reason to be now," she offered, her words resonating with the possibility of a new purpose that awaited him.

Father Thomas' response carried a sense of resignation, his words reflecting a recognition of the challenges they faced. "Yeah, I know, I know, I read the paper," he acknowledged, acknowledging his awareness of the ongoing threat. "We have to get to that building and safely relocate the demon," he stated, underscoring the necessity of their actions in preventing further harm.

Phoebe's explanation held a touch of irony, her words revealing the complexity of their situation. "Uh, it's funny you should mention that because when Prue met Vinceres she thought that he was a shut-in and..." she began, her tone conveying the unexpected twist in their predicament.

Father Thomas' reaction held a mixture of surprise and concern as he interjected, seeking clarification. "You didn't cast a spell?" he questioned, his words indicating his understanding of the potential consequences.

Piper attempted to provide context, navigating the nuances of their choices. "She did but..." she trailed off, attempting to convey the intricacies of their actions.

Father Thomas' response carried a weight of sacrifice, his words revealing the extent to which he had gone to prevent further bloodshed. "I gave up everything to prevent that beast from killing again," he confessed, his voice tinged with a mixture of determination and regret. "If it's free you can't stop it. Nobody can."

Buffy's observations extended beyond their conversation, her attention shifting to Prue as she sensed the mounting emotional strain that the empathic ability was placing on her. The unfolding chaos in the room didn't go unnoticed, as furniture trembled and the atmosphere grew tense. "Prue," Buffy whispered, her voice a gentle yet urgent reminder of the need to regain control.

The room seemed to respond to Prue's escalating emotions, furniture shaking and patients panicking. A sense of impending danger hung in the air as Prue grappled with the overwhelming sensations. "Prue," Buffy repeated, her concern palpable as the situation intensified.

Halliwell Manor

In the dimly lit basement, a scene of vulnerability unfolded as Leo and Buffy occupied the bottom step, their attention fixed on Prue who huddled in a corner, trembling under the weight of her empathic abilities.

Amidst the tense atmosphere, Buffy's voice broke the silence, carrying a tone of shared experience and empathy. "I remember when I got that Aspect of a Demon thing," she began with a sigh, her words revealing her own history with overwhelming powers. "I know what she's going through and I wouldn't wish that on anyone in the world," she admitted, her empathy for Prue palpable.

Leo's response held a quiet understanding as he absorbed Buffy's words, acknowledging the depth of Prue's struggle. "Buffy, I have talked to the Elders, who are my bosses," he disclosed, sharing a significant development. His voice was marked by a sense of purpose and care. "Even though you are the Powers that Be's champion. They have agreed that you should be added as my charge. That is if you should want your powers back."

Buffy's response was layered, reflecting a mixture of gratitude, uncertainty, and a desire for connection. She opened up about her emotions, her words carrying a raw honesty. "You know I've felt more love from you guys in two days, and with the exception of Prue you guys are total strangers, than I have from my friends since coming back," she confessed. The complex nature of her return and the challenges she faced were evident in her voice. "I know they love me; I just think that…" Buffy's sentence trailed off, leaving unspoken the deeper feelings that lay beneath her words.

Leo listened attentively; his gaze fixed on Buffy as he grasped the unspoken sentiment. Understanding the weight of her words, he offered a silent nod, acknowledging the complexity of her situation. His commitment to helping Buffy find her place within their new dynamic was unwavering, as demonstrated by his intention to talk with Willow about the spell she had cast that brought Buffy back from the dead.

In the attic, a group of determined individuals gathered around the Book of Shadows, their focus on finding a solution to the looming threat posed by Vinceres.

Piper's voice carried a mixture of gravity and recognition as she identified their adversary within the pages of the ancient book. "Here he is, Vinceres," she announced, her words revealing the formidable reputation that preceded the demon. The weight of his capabilities hung in the air, a reminder of the challenge they faced.

Phoebe's response held a note of resignation, her words capturing the sentiment of the group. "Great," she muttered, acknowledging the gravity of their situation.

Dawn's voice interjected with a touch of humor, a moment of lightness amidst the tension. "The energizer demon," she giggled, finding amusement in the ironic moniker. Her words brought a brief moment of levity to the room, reminding them of the importance of finding humor even in dire circumstances.

Phoebe and Piper shared a fleeting smile at Dawn's jest, appreciating the comic relief amid the seriousness of their task.

Phoebe's inquiry reflected their determination, seeking a way to overcome the seemingly insurmountable threat. "So, what do we do?" she wondered aloud, her voice tinged with both urgency and uncertainty.

Father Thomas' response carried a heavy weight, his words underscored by a sense of despair. "Nothing," he declared, his voice laced with resignation. The depth of his knowledge and experience was evident as he communicated the grim reality. "There's nothing you can do. It will find us and when it does, we're all dead," he concluded, his words painting a stark picture of the impending danger that loomed over them.

Amidst the tension in the attic, Piper's voice cut through the grim atmosphere with a touch of sarcasm. "Well, you're just a ray of sunshine, now aren't you?" she quipped as Buffy entered the room. Piper's words reflected her own frustration and desire for a glimmer of hope in their dire situation. "Hey, anything?" she inquired, hoping for some positive news or insight.

Buffy's response was a mixture of concern and insight, her words bearing the weight of experience. "It's too the point where her entire world is what she is feeling," Buffy explained, her voice carrying a sense of urgency. Her understanding of Prue's state of mind was drawn from her own experiences, particularly when she had grappled with the Aspect of a Demon. The challenge of breaking free from the overwhelming emotional turmoil was evident in her words. "It got to that point with me eventually when I was hearing everyone's thoughts. It's going to be hard to get her out of that state," she added, her empathy for Prue clear.

Piper's response was laden with a sense of urgency, reflecting the need to find a solution before it was too late. "We have to get her to snap out of this or else she won't be able to reverse the spell when the demon attacks," she emphasized, highlighting the crucial importance of Prue's state of mind.

Father Thomas, however, offered a somber perspective, his words tempered by his deep understanding of the situation. "You can't reverse the spell. Vinceres is immune to witches' magic," he revealed, his tone carrying a note of finality.

Phoebe's response held a glimmer of hope as she pointed out a contradiction. "Hold on, Prue's spell worked," she countered, seeking to find a way to defy the seemingly insurmountable odds.

Father Thomas clarified, shedding light on the complexities of the situation. "That's because the demon allowed it to work," he explained, his words unraveling the mystery behind the unexpected outcome. "To its own advantage. You'll find your spells useless now."

The room was filled with a renewed sense of hope as Phoebe's idea took center stage. "Maybe we actually don't need to reverse the spell," she proposed, her words carrying a spark of ingenuity and possibility.

Dawn's curiosity prompted her to ask, "What are you thinking?"

Phoebe's explanation unraveled her thought process, revealing a potential strategy. "Well, Prue's getting hit by emotions, all emotions, and her powers are tied to these emotions," she elaborated. Her voice held a glimmer of excitement as she presented her hypothesis. "So maybe if she can figure out a way to channel them, then she'd be pretty unstoppable herself, don't you think?"

Piper's inquiry reflected a mixture of hope and skepticism, seeking to understand the feasibility of Phoebe's idea. "Is that possible?" she wondered.

Father Thomas turned his gaze toward Buffy, acknowledging her experiences and the insights she could offer. "You know the answer to that," he said, recognizing Buffy's unique perspective.

Buffy's response was a blend of contemplation and determination. "If she is in the state I was at the end, he's right," she admitted, acknowledging the challenges she herself had faced. However, a spark of optimism colored her words as she considered the potential. "But I think it's worth the shot. My experience really means nothing here. I was infected by Aspect of a Demon. Prue wasn't infected; she was cursed with this power. Her experience could very well not mirror my own. She may be able to control it." Her gaze shifted to Father Thomas; a plea evident in her eyes. "You stopped this demon by cursing him in the first place. Now my sister's birth mother has your power. Help her." Her words held a note of urgency, appealing to Father Thomas's knowledge and experience to guide Prue through this challenging ordeal.

Buffy guided Father Thomas through the familiar corridors of the Manor and down into the basement, where they found Leo still with Prue. Concern etched Buffy's features as she inquired about Prue's condition. "How is she?" she asked Leo, her voice carrying both worry and a determination to find a solution.

Leo's response held a touch of helplessness as he gave an update. "Not any better," he admitted, his concern for Prue's well-being evident.

Father Thomas approached Prue with a measured pace, his empathy guiding his actions. "I know how you feel. Your instinct is to pull away. Don't. Try to find an inner calm," he advised, his voice carrying a soothing reassurance. His words reflected his understanding of the overwhelming emotions Prue was experiencing and his desire to help her navigate through them.

Prue's response was a mixture of pain and desperation, her words echoing her struggle. "I can't. The pain," she cried, her distress evident in her voice as she grappled with the intense emotions that enveloped her.

Father Thomas acknowledged his role in the situation, expressing regret for the burden that had befallen Prue. "You're carrying a cross you were never meant to bear. I'm sorry," he apologized, his words filled with a genuine sense of remorse for the predicament Prue found herself in.

Prue's plea carried a weight of vulnerability, a cry for relief from the overwhelming emotional turmoil. "Your sorrow, I can't, I can't take it. Please..." she implored, revealing that it wasn't Father Thomas's sorrow she was referring to. Instead, she was grappling with the weight of Buffy's suppressed and unrealized emotions, the unspoken pain that had been transferred to her through their empathic connection.

Father Thomas's voice held a compassionate encouragement as he continued to guide Prue through her struggle. "You've been fighting what you feel, that's natural and it's wrong," he explained, his words carrying a sense of understanding and empathy for Prue's internal conflict. He offered a path forward, a way for Prue to harness her empathic abilities and find her strength within them. "To find your strength as an empath, you must embrace your emotion. Focus on me," he instructed, drawing her attention to him as a point of concentration. "The feelings are ripping you apart because you're fighting them like the demon did. A demon can't handle human emotions, you can."

Father Thomas's words became a tangible action as he extended his hand toward Prue, inviting her to join him in a shared connection. "Prue, take my hand," he urged gently, his tone a mix of assurance and support. Prue complied, her grip solidifying their connection. "My power to ease human suffering lay in my hands. That's how I cursed the demon," he shared, revealing the source of his empathic abilities and how he had used them before. He then directed Prue's focus toward a transformative possibility. "You must channel the empathic gift into your power," he advised, suggesting that Prue could redirect the overwhelming emotions into a source of strength.

Prue's response carried a note of doubt, revealing her lack of confidence in her ability to control her power. "I can't. I can't control my power," she confessed, her uncertainty evident in her voice.

Father Thomas's conviction remained unwavering as he continued to guide Prue through this pivotal moment. "Prue, you can do it," he asserted, his voice carrying a combination of encouragement and belief in her potential. He painted a vivid picture of the opportunity before her, inviting her to embrace the depth of her abilities. "You have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to feel the world's emotions. All it means to be human. The good and the bad. Don't be afraid." His words held a sense of empowerment, urging Prue to overcome her fears and tap into the full extent of her empathic gift.

In the Manor's foyer, the door burst open, revealing Vinceres as he made his entrance. His voice held a taunting edge as he spoke, "Anybody home?" The impending danger was palpable, and the urgency to respond was clear.

"Piper, now!" Phoebe's voice carried a sharp command as she called out to her sister, prompting Piper to attempt freezing Vinceres in place. Yet, within mere moments, the demon's power pushed through Piper's freezing attempt. "Okay, I guess this is the unstoppable part," Phoebe remarked, acknowledging the demon's formidable strength.

"Where's Father Thomas?" Vinceres's inquiry was laced with a sense of purpose, his determination to locate his target evident.

"Plan B, plan B!" Piper's voice was tinged with urgency as the initial tactic failed to stop the demon. The need for quick thinking and adaptation was apparent.

In a swift move, Dawn seized a vase and shattered it over Vinceres's head in an attempt to subdue him. However, the demon's response was swift and forceful, pushing Dawn across the room. The danger escalated, and the struggle intensified.

Phoebe leaped into action, executing a series of well-aimed kicks that struck Vinceres's head and sent him crashing over a table. Despite her efforts, she acknowledged the need for a new approach. "Okay, uh, do we have a plan C?" she questioned, the urgency of the situation driving the search for alternative solutions.

"Uh, whoa," Piper's surprised voice echoed through the chaos as she attempted to freeze Vinceres once more. The intensity of the battle was escalating rapidly.

"Buffy, hurry!" Dawn's urgent call for reinforcements carried a weight of desperation as they fought to hold off the seemingly unstoppable demon.

Vinceres's persistence was evident as he once again overcame Piper's freezing attempt and seized Phoebe by the throat, his demand for information ringing through the air. "Just tell me where the empath is and I won't kill you," he growled, asserting his dominance with a dangerous edge. Amidst the chaos, Buffy, Prue, Leo, and Father Thomas emerged from the kitchen, their entrance marking a shift in the tide of the battle.

Prue's resolve was unwavering as she stepped forward, her voice laced with determination. "You want him?" she challenged, her hand gesturing defiantly. In a swift and confident motion, she wielded her power, sending Vinceres hurtling against a wall. His shock at her display of strength was evident, and he questioned, "How'd you do that?" The tables had turned, and Prue was now in control.

With unwavering determination, Prue made her stance clear. "If you want the empath, you're gonna have to go through me," she declared, her gaze firmly fixed on Vinceres. The sense of protectiveness radiated from her, encompassing her sisters and her daughters. The newfound bonds between them had solidified, and Prue was willing to stand her ground to defend them. In her heart, she held a special place for Buffy, even though their connection was still evolving. Her hope was that Buffy would come to reciprocate those feelings when the time was right. "Stay back. This is my fight."

In a burst of fiery determination, Prue's heart pounded with a mixture of fury and adrenaline. Her body moved with the grace of a dancer and the precision of a warrior as she met Vinceres head-on. With a swift leap, she soared through the air, her foot connecting with a powerful kick to Vinceres' chest, sending shockwaves of energy through her veins.

As Vinceres retaliated with a flurry of punches, Prue's instincts took over. Her reflexes were lightning-fast, her arms forming an impenetrable shield against his onslaught. Each punch that collided with her forearms was met with a resounding thud, a testament to her unwavering resolve and unyielding strength.

But it wasn't just physical prowess that defined Prue's defense. With the finesse of a seasoned warrior, she utilized her surroundings to her advantage. Gripping the stair railing tightly, she defied gravity itself, walking upon the wall like a supernatural acrobat. In a breathtaking display of agility, she vaulted over the railing, her foot connecting with a resounding impact against Vinceres' face.

"You can't hurt me, witch. I can handle your powers," Vinceres spat out with a defiant sneer, his grip tightening around Prue's delicate neck as he lifted her off the ground. Prue's heart pounded with a mix of fear and determination, her breath becoming shallow under the pressure of his fingers. But she was not one to succumb easily.

Summoning every ounce of her inner strength, Prue fought against the iron grip around her throat. With a surge of energy, she managed to pry Vinceres' hand away, her gasps for air mingling with the palpable tension that filled the air. Swift as a striking serpent, she twisted her body, flipping over Vinceres in a breathtaking display of agility and control.

Their movements became a frenetic dance of power and resistance. Prue's muscles screamed as she deflected Vinceres' fierce punches, her body a fortress against his onslaught. In a daring move, she thrust her palm against his chest, sending him crashing to the floor. The impact reverberated through the room, a testament to her indomitable will.

"I can handle your powers," Vinceres snarled.

"What about pain? Human pain," Prue's voice carried the weight of the empathic abilities he had cursed her with. Her eyes closed, a tremor coursing through her as her astral form materialized before her.

Astral Prue surged forward, a phantom of determination and anguish. She charged at Vinceres, the embodiment of all the hidden emotions throughout the world or at least those in San Francisco. And then, with a jolt that rippled through the very fabric of reality, Astral Prue melded with Vinceres' form. His screams cut through the air, a chilling symphony of torment as he was inundated by a flood of sensations.

In the climax of their struggle, Vinceres could no longer contain the emotional storm that raged within him. His facade crumbled, and his essence shattered into a kaleidoscope of shattered emotions. Prue's lips curved into a triumphant smile, a mix of vindication and relief painting her features. Astral Prue vanished in a burst of crimson light; her mission fulfilled.

Prue turned, her eyes seeking out her family in the aftermath of the tumultuous clash. Her smile radiated a newfound serenity, a peace she had longed for. "The voices are gone," her words were a gentle declaration, a promise of a brighter future. Dawn, Piper, and Phoebe rushed to her side, their embrace a cocoon of warmth that encapsulated the end of the harrowing battle.

Dawn's voice trembled with a mix of curiosity and concern, her eyes fixed on her mother's transformed expression. "So, you're not an empath anymore, Mom?" The question hung in the air, laden with emotions that only a daughter could understand.

Prue's smile, warm and reassuring, enveloped her daughter like a comforting embrace. It was a smile that held a promise of a burden lifted, a newfound freedom. She turned her gaze towards Father Thomas, a mixture of gratitude and regret in her eyes. "I'm sorry. I was hoping that we could return your gift," she spoke, her voice a blend of sincerity and a touch of melancholy.

Father Thomas, standing there with an air of calm acceptance, met Prue's gaze with his own understanding. "But you did," he replied with a gentle smile that belied the gravity of the moment. "It appears I have the ability to understand what people are feeling even without a magic assist." His words held a sense of revelation, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

A burst of heartfelt laughter bubbled forth as Phoebe chimed in, her words a lighthearted punctuation to the moment's intensity. "You kicked ass," she declared with a gleam in her eyes, her admiration for Prue's strength and valor ringing clear.

Prue's smile, radiant and unburdened, mirrored the collective sentiment. "I did, didn't I?" she mused with a hint of pride, the weight of her trials now transformed into a badge of courage.

Halliwell Manor

"Buffy?" Dawn's voice echoed softly through the Manor's corridors as she ventured through its familiar rooms in search of her sister.

In the grand foyer, Buffy stood with a phone pressed to her ear, her expression a blend of determination and vulnerability. Dawn's presence went unnoticed at first, as she observed her sister's conversation unfold before her.

"I'm not coming back," Buffy's voice, tinged with a mix of resolution and bittersweet affection, reached Dawn's ears, carrying words that held the power to shape destinies. It was a conversation that resonated with depth, as Buffy spoke to Willow, Xander, Giles, Tara, and Anya – a tapestry of bonds forged through battles fought and hearts shared.

Dawn's heart swelled as the weight of Buffy's words sank in. She watched, a silent witness, as Buffy continued, her voice carrying the echoes of profound pain and quiet acceptance. "I will miss you guys and I love you. But this is what I need. Being ripped out of heaven was more than I could handle. I know this hurts each of you. But I'm finally where I belong, I'm home."

"Buffy?" Dawn spoke again, her voice a gentle thread woven into the moment. As the call concluded and Buffy turned to face her, Dawn met her sister's gaze, her eyes filled with a mixture of hope, understanding, and a lingering touch of sadness.

Buffy's smile, a fragile yet resolute beacon, enveloped Dawn in its warmth. "We're home," she declared, the weight of that single word encompassing a world of emotion. The promise of a new beginning echoed in Buffy's words, carried by the very air that surrounded them. "I'm going to sell mom's house. And I intend do as Prue…" she paused as she thought about what Prue had offered, "Mom recommended."

And then, the resolve in Buffy's voice became palpable, like a flame reignited. "I'm going to have Mama Joyce's gallery boxed up and with the proceeds from the sale of both the house and the gallery building. I intend to use it to reopen the gallery here in San Francisco."

Tears glistened in Dawn's eyes, a single droplet escaping as a testament to the profound joy and realization that enveloped her. Everything she had wished for, hoped for, seemed to crystallize in that moment. Buffy's path forward was clear, her journey still unfolding, but now guided by a new sense of purpose and connection.

Psychologist's Notes - Dr. Janice Green

Date: October 18, 2001

Patient: Ms. Buffy Anne Summers

Clinical Presentation: Ms. Summers exhibited clear signs of severe depression during her recent session. She attributed this emotional state to multiple stressors, with the primary triggers being the loss of her mother and her sacrificial act on behalf of her adopted sister. An additional compounding factor was her subsequent resurrection after a five-month period that she claims to have spent in what she described as Heaven. Secondary stressors encompassed her responsibilities as the legal guardian of her adopted sister and financial strain.

Assessment and Observations: It is evident that Ms. Summers' emotional distress has roots in her mother's demise and her selfless actions for her adopted sister, as well as the profound experience of her own death and return. Her disclosure of suicidal thoughts following her revival is a natural reaction considering the surreal nature of her circumstances. However, I do not perceive an immediate risk of her acting on these thoughts. As a precautionary measure, I recommended discussing safety plans with Ms. Halliwell.

Regarding her relationship with her adopted sister, Ms. Summers recognizes her sibling's supportiveness but also acknowledges her teenage tendencies. The pivotal shift from her sister's rebellious behavior to her current supportive stance appears to correlate with Ms. Summers' revival.

Inquiry into Ms. Summers' romantic life revealed a complex history involving a vampire boyfriend with a unique twist. Her subsequent experiences with romantic partners have been mostly transient, prompting consideration of her true feelings toward men. I cautiously broached the topic of her sexual orientation, and while she hadn't contemplated being gay, she expressed openness and acceptance toward diverse orientations.

Recommendations: It's worth noting that Ms. Dawn Summers, the adopted sister, might benefit from counseling as well. Her initial acting out can be traced back to the loss of her adoptive mother and a desire for attention from the sole remaining adult figure. The transformation from defiance to support seemingly aligned with Ms. Summers' period of death.

Given Ms. Summers' recent developments, it is prudent to suggest involving Ms. Dawn Summers in counseling. This would address potential underlying anxieties associated with the fear of losing her adopted sister, especially in such proximity to their adoptive mother's passing.

Addendum - October 20, 2001: In a subsequent communication, Ms. Summers revealed her consent for Ms. Halliwell, her adopted sister's birth mother, to legally adopt her. This transition seems to have provided Ms. Summers with a sense of belonging that was absent since her biological mother's demise. While Ms. Summers had formed a familial bond with her adopted sister, the absence of biological family members weighed heavily on her. This transition marks a significant step towards emotional healing.

Conclusion: With the newfound support of her adoptive family, particularly Ms. Halliwell, whom she now regards as her mother, I hold optimism that Ms. Summers will find solace in leaving behind the emotional burdens of her mother's death and her own harrowing encounter with mortality. The embrace of this loving unit will likely foster a healthier emotional trajectory for Ms. Summers as she navigates her journey of recovery and self-discovery.

Author's Note: While this chapter seems to wrap up everything nicely. I do not intend to stop here. There will still be things Buffy has to work out. Also the mention at being gay brings in a femslash pairing down the line. I reveal who Buffy will be paired with in chapter 6 and 7. And sadly yes when we get to the end of season 3 I do intend for Prue to die. Given what both Buffy and Dawn have been through I think it's something they need to face. In fact I intend to replace Piper in Hell Hath No Fury with both Buffy and Dawn.
