It was around lunch time when Vash got the notification from his scroll, Ozpin wanted to talk to him about some of his responsibilities at the school. For the most part Vash was just hobbling around the school, gaining looks from students wherever he went. Vash made a note to deactivate his arm in the future while he sleeps, he can't be hurting himself in his sleep going forward.
But that was the part that was bothering him. It's not an exaggeration to say the last time he had a nightmare this bad was before the kingdom of vale was in existence, at least before the current government was a thing. Looking back at that time, humanity was making leaps and strides, abandoning the plants that gave them refuge in the desert hellscape. In those days they had lost most of the technology that was with the seed ships.
it was almost medieval, with the mixture of individuals with aura, combined with irreplicable technology being destroyed.
Over time the forces that formally held control over Gunsmoke were dispatched by the kingdoms, led by super powered individuals with aura. In the old days only surgically modified individuals like Legato and the gung-ho guns were the main levers of power being able to turn the tides of conflicts. However, when people started to unlock their auras, the powers of the old world were no longer able to keep their boots on the throat of the people. It eventually turned into a cascade event where the average citizen was able to be as effective as a whole squad of cyborgs. with half the time and money it cost to produce said cyborgs.
Vash was brought out of his musings when he arrived at the headmasters office, Or rather the elevator that led to his office in the clock tower. Distantly Vash was hoping he hadn't done anything wrong, it was less of a guilty conscience and more of a desire to be prepared for whatever lies ahead.
Sliding his hands across his weapons he reassured himself of his readiness. The only thing that could hamper him would be his leg but he faced worse with worse, and came out on top.
Pressing the button Vash waited as the elevator ascended, gradually getting higher and higher looking down on beacon's grounds before the view became eclipsed by the tower.
Then the elevator stopped, Vash prepaid himself as the doors opened.
Sean break
Ozpin was standing at the window behind his desk looking at the goings-on of the school. The elevator chimes as Vash made his appearance.
"yo Ozzy, i heard you wanted to talk with me?" Vash asked with a raised arm, leisurely making his way across the expansive room towards Ozpin. " why yes. I apologize for the inconvenience but we need to discuss what you will be doing here officially." he said while turning to Vash. He proceeds to take a seat at his desk and motions for Vash to do the same. "wow Oz, this is some office you got here. it's so big somebody could get lost in here." Vash stated as he took a seat across from Ozpin. " Well it is certainly specious enough. just between you and me it's easier to intimidate misbehaving students who are sent my way." Ozpin state's reminiscing on the countless students that received tongue lashings from him, in all his lives in this office. Before continuing. "Lucky for you, you're neither a student nor misbehaving." he finished
"ahh hahaha, good one professor!" stated Vash. sleeping his leg in a humorous way.
"Why I called you here today is to discuss some things with you. Firstly, I need to apologize. This normally would be done well before the school year starts. As you know we took you on with beacon, right before the start of this year." states Ozpin. " It's no problem professor. to be honest I'm just happy I have a job, or I'd be starving right now," said Vash." So let's get things in order, beginning with your responsibilities. Your main job is to be the security for the school, you will be responsible for safeguarding the student population, from any threats from outside or inside the school." said Ozpin, stopping to take a momentary sip of his coffee. Whatever effect it may have on his body it would never be able to reinvigorate his tired old soul." you will also be expected to respond to student crises, on and off the school grounds." Ozpin stated.
"So you're telling me if a student gets in trouble out in town, I'm expected to go pick them up?" asked Vash, leaning back in his chair. "Exactly, previously that task was left to the deputy headmistress. However she has been overloaded so I'm shifting some of the responsibility to you. any student that you are asked to retrieve you are to bring them to mrs. goodwitch."
Said Ozpin taking another sip from his mug " additionally you will be responsible for teaching remedial classes to students. focusing on conflict avoidance and non-lethal takedowns."
"Is this about what happened to Ruby?" Vash asked after a moment of introspection,"yes and no, it was actually her sister Yang, she destroyed a nightclub!" shouted Ozpin, standing from his seat. "she hospitalized 20 people, and caused 2 million lien worth of damage!" He was gripping the desk now, shouting from the top of his lungs. " The only reason she wasn't charged with a felony and stashed away to jail. Is because her uncle begged me to rescue her from the consequences of her actions!"He finished. His face flushed as he sank down into his chair.
Meanwhile Vash was arched away in the chair, shielding himself from the frustrated headmaster's ravings. "Jeez professor, it sounds like she made you upset." said Vash he was sweating slightly due to the awkwardness of the situation. " I am Vary. , I had to pull favors from the counsel, to get the funds for the legal settlement, and to have law enforcement look the other way." Ozpin wasn't one to normally crash-out in such a spectacular manner, but in the presence of Vash, he felt for the first time in his long repeatable life, he has a peer to vent.
"I'll be honest with you mr. Vash. I need you to break the many wild bucks in beacon. These new generation of hunters are unruly and undisciplined, the prep school's have done their best but their heads have gotten too big. They believe themselves to be invincible and above the law."
There was a pregnant silence in the office as the two immortals thought about that conversation."Very well Ozzy, are there any students I should know about?" asked Vash, as he reclined in his seat. " virtually all of the first years. it's all the media combined with this new 'woo, woo' friendly parent approach to raising children."
There was another silence as Vash thought of the current state. it made sense from just his interactions with the new batch of students. He could feel it. One very vivid reminder was Yang's harsh treatment of him when he was talking to Ruby. The response that Ozpin showed underlied the urgency of the situation. They had four years to break an entire lifetime of bad habits, And Vash couldn't agree more. the defenders of humanity had to be the best representation of humanity, Or else they would all die.
"The two problem teams are rwby and jnpr. The former being a priority. Their leader Ruby is young and untested. She means well, but at the end of the day she is only 15. She has a lot of maturing to do which is why I placed her as team leader to accelerate the process. Then there is her sister, yang. She is quick to anger and jump to conclusions. Her semblance is geared towards aggression which has done nothing but reward her bad behaviors, and reinforce her explosive temper. Then there is her partner Blake. She is a fauns racist from a minority supremacist group. She's too independent and secretive to effectively coop with her team. And finally, there is Weiss. the hair to a disreputable dust franchise. She is conceited and solipsistic, believing in her own supremacy and excellence, despite being arguably the weakest link physically in team rwby."
he finished, taking a long and belated breath before continuing.
" Team jnpr isn't much better. Their leader Jaune is a fraudster, who knows absolutely nothing about being a huntsman, i only let him join the academy due to the outstanding huntsman his family produces. but he's well behind. His partner is a world class competition fighter, who's on par with third years. I placed her on the team to offset jaune's ineptitude. Then there's Ren and Nora.
Ren is relatively well rounded as a first year, but most of his time and energy is spent policing and wrangling his out of control partner Nora. Who absolutely has no self control, and has zero regards about others and how they feel. she refuses to take her station as a huntsman in training seriously."
Finally finishing. Ozpin takes a calm and measured sip of his coffee. Acting like he hasn't just spent the last couple of minutes, executing the absolutely meanest roast in beacon's history. "That's pretty damning there Oz. If they are as bad as you say, why are they still here?" asked Vash. crossing his arms.
"The kingdoms are teetering on the edge of collapse. the war on the grim hasn't been going well, the average life expectancy of the average huntsman has been reduced by half. only the best of the best are living to retirement. The ugly truth is, we need meat to keep the grinder going for the survival of humanity." The tone in the office took a depressing turn.
It's an open secret that the war has been going bad for the last 30 years. villages go missing everyday, and huntsmen are cut down like blades of grass in a field. That makes sense to has been doing amazing compared to its time on gunsmoke, however the trend is casting downwards. In the peace and comfort that modernity has afforded, the masses tend to forget that there is an existential crisis outside the walls of their city. The peace and tranquility that is provided by the city's walls are an anomaly. not a naturally occurring circumstance, as such at any moment for any reason that peace can be destroyed. Something so simple as not having enough food can plunge the entire state into chaos.
It reminds Vash of a quote he heard many years ago. "The world is littered with the remains of civilizations and empires that thought themselves invincible and eternal." said Vash contemplatively.
"So you understand then" said Ozpin. In the past Vash would be appalled by the very contents of the conversation. but in the time since his fight with his brother and taking his first life, he has come to understand the cold truth. This is the way the world works. not everybody is guaranteed to live. Some seek destruction by their own hand, others by fate. In the end rem passed her idealism to Vash, and he received it wholly and totally. Looking back at her liberal advice it caused no end of pain and heat ache for Vash. but despite it all, he can't bring himself to hate her. In the end, the ultimate lesson he learned was to think for himself and live by decisions he's made.
"I do understand."
End of chapter.
