Chapter 2: Infected

The Ninja hopped back onto the bounty, and made their way to Rubble Grove.
"So what exactly is Rubble Grove?" asked Jay.
"Yeah, I've never heard of it." Kai added.
"According to my database, Rubble Grove used to be a thriving village, but most of the citizens left when they could no longer find jobs to provide for their families." Zane explained.
"An abandoned village? Sounds like the perfect place for a villain's hideout." Nya replied.
"Well let's get there and see what this Plague Doctor is up to." Lloyd declared.
And off they went.
In Rubble Grove, Dr. Maul, Nurse Payne, and the other doctors and nurses came back to the buildings with the blood samples. They went back to work in the labs, and tried to get the experiment right.
They added different enzymes, antibodies, and pathogens to the blood samples in the petri dishes. Dr. Maul did one final test, got the results, and smiled.
"Dr. Rogers, I think we've got it." he announced, holding up the dish.
When Dr. Rogers heard that, he and the other workers hurried to him. He took the petri dish from him, and looked at it under a microscope. Then, Dr. Rogers smiled.
"You've done it Dr. Maul! We've created the greatest weapon ever."
"You mean it's ready, doctor?" asked Nurse Payne.
"Yes. And to celebrate let's all go to the cafeteria for some sparking cider."
Everyone cheered, and began leaving the lab.
Outside, the Ninja arrived at the site, and quietly landed the Destiny's Bounty. They all descended and looked around. The place was indeed abandoned. The houses were empty and falling apart, store signs were falling off, and they didn't see anyone.
"Now, if I was a villain's headquarters where would I be?" thought Cole.
"Maybe it's the only building that has lights on." Kai observed.
He pointed to a building further down that seemed to have clean windows and there seemed to be light coming from it. The Ninja made their way towards the building, and when they got close enough they saw that the address matched the one on the card.
"So how we gonna do this?" asked Nya.
"Zane, can you run an analysis?" Lloyd instructed.
Zane looked at the building using his special vision, and saw where people were, and how many rooms there were.
"It seems most of the people are gathered in one room, and there's no one guarding the front door from the other side."
"Good, then this will be easy." declared Jay.
And with that, they quietly opened the door and snuck inside. To their surprise, the inside of the building didn't match the inside. The floors were pristine, the walls were white, and the lights were really bright.
"Gee, these guys sure keep this place clean." observed Nya.
"(Sniffs), and it smells like a doctor's office." said Kai.
Lloyd shushed them.
"Quiet, guys."
They quietly walked further into the building, and they managed to take a peek in the different rooms and saw what looked like labs with lots of equipment, rooms with computers, and was looked like doctor's offices.
Just then, they heard voices coming from up ahead.
"Come on." whispered Jay.
They followed the voices, and it led them to some double doors. They looked through the windows, and saw a bunch of people dressed in white, and drinking drinks.
"Looks like some kind of party." whispered Kai.
"I wonder what's the celebration." thought Nya.
They listened closely, and overheard the conversation.
"Attention everyone." said Dr. Rogers, as he tapped his glass of sparkling cider.
Everyone stopped talking, and looked at him.
"First let me say, I couldn't have done this without all of your help, and once we get this out Ninjago will be mine, and with all of you as my army, we'll be unstoppable."
"Another plot to take over Ninjago?" Cole complained quietly.
A doctor raised her hand.
"Yes?" asked Dr. Rogers.
"Uh, not to doubt you or anything sir, but there have been many other attempts to take over Ninjago in the past, and they all failed. How's this time going to be any different?" she asked.
The Ninja expected Dr. Rogers to blow up at her, but instead he just chuckled, and calmly explained.
"Simple, those past has been conquerors, the Serpentine, the Overlord, Master Chen, Morro and his ghosts, the Hands of Time, and Lord Garmadon they all overthought their way of conquering. They all used giant machines, large armies, or had some huge creature by their side. But this time we're using occam's razor. Since all those attempts failed even though they had something huge or in large numbers we're going to use the smallest weapon possible."
"The smallest weapon?" wondered Nya.
"The smallest weapon can be the deadliest. And soon Ninjago will be under the rule of the Plague Doctor." Dr. Rogers announced.
The doctors and nurses cheered.
"Well I say that's our cue." Lloyd told the others.
"I am ready." Zane replied.
"Let's do this." declared Cole.
And with that, the Ninja burst into the room.
"Hands up, everyone!" yelled Jay.
"What, the Ninja?" asked Dr. Maul.
"Get them!" ordered Dr. Rogers.
The doctors and nurses charged at the Ninja, and the Ninja charged right back. There was lots of kicking, punching, and hitting.
"You know, you really should make an appointment before coming to the doctor's." Nurse Payne told Nya as they fought.
"What, you guys never heard of a house call?" Nya remarked.
As they kept fighting, Dr. Rogers got an idea. He managed to whisper something to Dr. Maul and Nurse Payne, and they understood. They got word to the other doctors and nurses and they got some syringes and filled them with liquid from a vial.
And another pulled out a small microchip. Some of doctors and nurses pinned the Ninja down, and stabbed the arm with the syringes. Another couple of nurses, managed to pin down Zane. While one nurse held him down, the other nurse opened up his chest and placed something in it.
Nurse Payne went over to Dr. Rogers.
"It's done, sir." she informed.
"Good."
And with that, several doctors and nurses reached into their pockets, pulled out some smoke bombs and threw them to the ground. Smoke filled the air, and as the Ninja fanned the smoke away and when it cleared they saw that the nurses and doctors were gone.
"(Coughs), where'd they go?" asked Jay.
Zane ran an analysis.
"It seems they're still in the building. Probably on a different floor." he informed.
"I say we go hunting." Kai declared.
"No, we should get back to the monastery and figure out what we know." Lloyd told.
Kai was about to protest, but Cole and Nya told him Lloyd was right. And they left the building. From another floor, Dr. Rogers, Dr. Maul, and Nurse Payne watched them leave.
"This was a good idea, Doctor." Dr. Maul complimented to Dr. Rogers.
"I can't wait to see what this does to them." Nurse Payne added.
"Thank you, what better way to test out our weapon than on the Ninja themselves?" Dr. Rogers replied.
Back at the monastery, the Ninja started to feel a bit off.
"(Clears his throat), you guys feeling okay?" asked Cole.
"I think so." Kai replied.
"That fight probably just took a lot out of us more than we thought." Zane thought.
"Man, either we're getting older or we're getting out of shape." Nya remarked.
"Maybe we should do some practice drills before we start thinking about a next stop in stopping this quack." Jay suggested.
They tried to practice spar, do Spinjitzu, and use their powers but they were finding it difficult. They felt tired, a little achy, and some of them began feeling a little hot.
"You know what guys, I think I'm gonna turn in early tonight." Lloyd informed.
"I think I will too." Nya added.
"I'm not even hungry." Cole piped up.
"You not hungry? That's a new one." Jay remarked.
"I too am feeling run down. Perhaps in the morning I'll have Pixal run a diagnostic test on me." Zane said.
"See you guys in the morning. (Coughs)." Kai told.
And with that, they all went to bed early not knowing the weapon was already at work.
