Chapter 11: Turn of Events

Alice's eyes slowly opened up as she stood up to take a look at her surroundings. She looked to see that she was in a train, heading to the Tokyo settlement. While inside, she heard talking as Alice saw Lelouch talking to a girl with long green hair. Despite that, there was something familiar about her that Alice couldn't place her mind on as she eyed them.

"All right. I want confirmation from you, C.C. Are you my enemy or my ally?" he spoke to said woman

"You sure you want to talk about this with her present?" she asked as C.C turned to look at Alice. "Nice to see you are awake."

"Answer my question."

"Where is this coming from?"

"Mao's Geass lets him get inside someone's mind by hearing what they're thinking and planning." Lelouch said. "I'm right, aren't I?"

"Yes, the way a Geass manifests is different for each person as you already know." C.C stated. "If Mao concentrates, he can hear thoughts up to 500 meters away and can read clear down to you subconscious if he wants to. For someone like you, who fights using your head, he's the worst possible enemy."

Lelouch stroked his chin in thought. "500 meters... Frankly, I'm not as surprise as I thought I would be." he said. "I suspected there were others who have the power of Geass, but I didn't think someone like him would appear. Did you make a contract with him?"

"It was 11 years ago, yes." C.C answered

"So, he's my predecessor." Lelouch said in an amused tone. "Is there a reason that he could be my enemy?"

"No, Mao is only after me." C.C stated

"I can see that." Lelouch replied. "He could have revealed our true identities and told the police or military who we are, but he keeps to himself." he looked toward C.C "Is there a limit to his Geass?"

"Mao's Geass is potent." C.C answered. "He can use it as many times as he wants and doesn't require eye contact like hers or for someone to here like Rai's."

"So, Rai and I are similar to our Geass in terms of absolute obedience." Lelouch said. "Does he have any weaknesses?"

"If anything, I would say he can't turn his power off." C.C replied. "If he's in a crowd, he can hear every mind rolling and writhing around him. Hearing every last thought whether he wants to or not."

"If you two are done talking..." Lelouch and C.C glanced at Alice who had her arms folded as she stared at them. "

"I do owe you an explanation. But first, we have to wait for the rest to show up."

"The rest, you mean-" In that moment, a train car door slid open as Rai, Malik, and Carlito stepped inside

"Lelouch? Why-" Rai stopped himself when he saw C.C with widened eyes. "It's you."

"What's going on? And who's the girl with green hair?" Carlito asked confused

Malik glanced between Lelouch and C.C before staring at Alice who simply nod. "Isn't it obvious? He's Zero." Malik spoke with slightly widened eyes

"Him?" Carlito asked, pointing at Lelouch

"Yes, I am Zero." Lelouch said in a serious and calm tone. "I am the leader of the Black Knights."

"Then back at the mansion, when we..."

"That's right, Rai. Or should I say Archangel? I knew of the test you and the rest of Fenrir for the Black Knights."

"You're not an ordinary student." Malik said. "You've known Suzaku since you were kids, Alice too before Japan was invaded. Not to mention one of your your chess matches with Rai, only kids who participate in that would be someone with nobility. Unless..."

"Only Alice and Suzaku know this, but here and now I will tell you. For what I am about to tell the three of you must remain secret."

"What secret?"

"I am the banished son of Charles Zi Britannia, 98th emperor of the Holy Britannian Empire." Lelouch said to them

Rai and Carlito were shocked by the revelation, but most of all was Malik himself. The three of them were in a train cart with a prince of the Britannian royal family. To Rai, it slowly started to add up for her with some of the talks he had with Nunnally. How she was reminiscent of home during the time Rai stayed in Ashford since his memory loss. Carlito, Alice, and even Rai were caught off guard when Malik suddenly started laughing. Lelouch and C.C were silent while he laughed until he regained his composure, before looking back with a straight face.

"A prince of Britannia rebelling against his old man. You are something else, Lelouch Lamprouge." he said with a grin

Mao staggered and was having a hard time in a public library. Even though no one spoke, he could still hear the thoughts of every person in his vicinity as it was driving him crazy. He couldn't take it all in and decided to pull something out of his pocket, a recorder as he pulled it out before playing it. He could hear the calm and kind tone of C.C, being reminded of the praise and encouragement C.C had given him. Listening to her voice made feel Mao feel at peace, relaxing upon hearing the sound of her recorded voice as C.C's voice was the only thing he could hear.

"Don't worry, Mao. I'm not going to die. Mao! Mao! Are you awake? Oh Mao, how silly..."

"I can't live without you." Mao happily said. "Wait for me. I'm coming to you, C.C"

The next day, Lelouch was at home having tea with Nunnally and Alice while thinking about what to do with Mao.

"If Mao can read minds, then he already knows my weak points and that's where he'll strike." Lelouch thought. "He also everything about Alice, that also includes Rai, Malik, and Carlito. So, I can't risk any of them being involved. I will be the one to deal with Mao."

"How long has it been since we spent time by ourselves, huh?"

"Too long, I'd say." Alice said, smiling. "Feels like a decade since I last saw you two before coming to Ashford."

"Even Sayako needs some time off now and again." Lelouch said in a gentle manner. "Starting today, I'll be staying home for a while."

"Lately, you've been out of the house so much I was curious. Have you found some really fun game to play or something?"

"Sort of. My current opponent is pretty hard to beat." Lelouch said looking at his laptop of C.C in his room, signaling to talk with him as Alice stood up from her seat

"That's funny. Only our big brother Schneizel, would ever make you say something like that."

"I should be going." Alice said, before walking over to Lelouch. "Can we talk?" she asked in a whisper as Lelouch nodded

"I'm thinking of getting some more tea, Nunnally. Do you want any?"

"No, thank you." Nunnally replied as Lelouch and Alice head into the other room

"What is it?"

"About Mao."

"I will handle Mao. After what happened with you and Shirley, I'm not taking any chances in confronting him."

"Lelouch."

"I'm serious. I need you here, just in case he decides to come here. For Nunnally's sake, Alice."

Alice thought to what he saw. On one hand, she feels he should go with him but on the other hand Nunnally would be vulnerable if Mao decided to show up in Ashford. She let out a sigh, knowing full well that Lelouch's mind was made up.

"Fine. I'll stay here." Alice said. "What about the others? You're not taking them?"

"I told Rai and Malik that I would be the one to deal with Mao."

"There's something else. Remember Kirihara when you first met him again with the Kyoto group?"

Lelouch raised an eyebrow out of curiosity. "Malik said you were the last to leave with us when we were meeting him. What did you talk about?"

"He was surprised to see me after all these years. I imagine the same was for you." Alice said

"It was." Lelouch replied. "But what did you talk to Kirihara about."

"Nothing much. Other than he spoke of an arrangement my mother's family with Suzaku's father." she stated. "I didn't know what he meant until I realized it."

"And that would be..." Lelouch trailed off for Alice to continue

"I'm the daughter of the late prime minister of Japan. This would make me Suzaku's sister."

Lelouch merely blinked at the revelation. "You're Suzaku half sister?" he asked in a surprised tone as Alice nodded in reply. "I wondered why another family was present in Kururugi Shrine when Nunnally and I showed up. But finding out that Alice is Suzaku's sister..."

"Lelouch?"

"Did Kirihara ever tell you what the arrangement between prime minister Kururugi and your mother's family?"

"I wasn't able to ask him. Is it possible that it had something to do with Britannia invading Japan ten years ago?"

"It seems the only one who would know is your late father, the prime minister." Lelouch said, pondering something else. "Did you tell Suzaku?"

"Not yet. But knowing him, he can never stay at one place for too long."

"That is true."

Back at the ASEEC hanger, Suzaku was putting his school black jacket on when Cecile informed him of something.

"A medical checkup?" he asked

"Just regulations." Cecile informed him. "It's required for all Knightmare pilots."

"I understand." Suzaku replied

"Good. Tomorrow then, after you're off from school." Cecile said

Suzaku nodded. "Right, thanks." he said. "Miss Cecile, do you know of any way I can see Princess Euphemia?"

"You want to meet her?" Cecile asked

"Forget it." Lloyd said, doing work on his computer. "You have to be at least a Knight of Honor to get an audience with her."

"But an Earl can arrange it if you really want it to." Cecile stated

"Especially if that Earl is Lloyd." Mariel added

"Who? Me?" Lloyd replied

"Yes!" Cecile and Mariel said in unison

"Huh? Lloyd?! You're an Earl? You never told me that." Suzaku responded in surprise

Lloyd laughed as he felt bashful. "Oh, I'm so embarrassed."

"The prodigal son of nobles." Cecile said with a smile. "He can't really separate his work from play."

"Wow." Suzaku said in amazement

"It's good for you to get checked out." Mariel said to Sazaku. "Physically and mentally. Mind and body are important for a soldier's effectiveness." she added, about to leave the hanger

"Laby Lubie. Mariel." said person turned to face Suzaku. "I was wondering, would it be possible for you to-"

"Going to stop you right there." Mariel interjected. "No my place to say. Besides, even though Lloyd and I are out of nobility, Cornelia still reigns in that ranking."

"I understand. I apologize."

"Get checked out, Suzaku." she replied. "Mental health is as important than physical health."

Rai, Malik, and Carlito were thinking of someplace to relax, to get their minds off of Mao after Lelouch requested no help to face him. Ra was a bit worried with Lelouch facing Mao and wanted to help, but Lelouch believed that Mao was certain of Fenrir's capabilities. Since Rai knew him the longest aside from Alice, Malik figured both of them could talk Lelouch out of dealing with Mao by himself. Mao's Geass involved him being 500 meters in his range using his power of mind reading, which meant it would be difficult if he was stalking them. But according to Lelouch, Mao's attention is heavily focused on C.C alone. After asking at the front desk, it turned out that the male baths would be unusable for a while. However, they did partitioned off a section of the female baths to temporarily substitute for it. The hot spring bath was a spacious outdoor bath and was structured similar to a garden, using lava from Mt. Fuji to keep it warm. From the looks of it, it was pretty cramped even while standing in the water, but made for it size due to an incident a couple days back. After they entered the hot springs bath, Malik pushed aside the enclosure and stepped in the bath. The three relaxed, seeing the bath had been split in half with a wooden board.

Carlito sighed with relief. "That feels so good." he said

"I agree." Rai replied. "I know I should be worried about this Mao guy, but Lelouch said he could handle it. Then again, considering what Mao can do..."

"He said he can handle it. Besides, Alice knows him well enough than to just sit back and do nothing." Malik reassured him. "She'll intervene and keep her distance with Mao as best as she can."

"I hope you're right."

After a good few minutes in the hot springs, Rai and Carlito stepped out while Malik enjoyed himself in the bath. His tense muscles nearly relaxed throughout the mercenary jobs he had in Japan before Washington had Fenrir partnering up with the Black Knights. He still couldn't believe that Lelouch was a rebelling Britannian prince but considering how is Nunally would be viewed as inferior due to her condition, he did not blame him. Some of the Black Knights members seemed decent enough, with the exception of Tamaki being an annoyance. He was highly skeptical of Diethard, didn't trust him as far as he could throw him and saw him as nothing more than an opportunist. Then, Maliik thought of Kallen who was an odd one out for him. Plays the shy girl type in school, then sheds it off as a resistance fighter and a Knightmare pilot to boot. He believed she had a lot of motivation in fighting against the empire of Britannia, for the sake of helping to free her people from oppression including her mother who she currently regarded.

"Huh? Is that..." speaking of Kallen, she looked down from the tip of the partition board

"Kallen? I wasn't expecting you to be here." he replied

"I could say the same. What are you doing here?" she asked

"Figured I come here and relax a little in the hot springs." Malik said. "Looks like you wanted to do the same."

"Hmm..." Kallen stared at scar on his chest. "Hey, are you the only one over there? I'm alone on my side."

"Yeah, for now." he replied. "I didn't come here alone."

"Who else is here? Rai?"

"Carlito, too. They stepped out recently."

"In that case..." Kallen went around the partition board and came over to this side of the bath, sitting next to Malik. "H-Hey." she said with flushed cheeks, looking away. "It's just for a little bit, okay? Just some mixed bathing."

Malik was doing the same, trying to advert his gaze at Kallen. She stood submerged within the hot water at a distance that was both far and close to him. Naturally, she had a towel wrapped around her body but his heart was still beating fast. Kallen began to relax a little while she sat by Malik.

Kallen groaned with relief and joyful bliss. "I finally feel like I can relax."

"Yeah, me too..."

'A hot springs bath really is good as expected. I just want to keep coming back in.' Kallen thought to herself. "Ah, then, I'd better be getting back."

He nodded. "Sure..." Malik trailed off as Kallen was about to return to the woman's side before asking. "Kallen." said person turned to him. "I... uh... I noticed you at the hospital the other day. Is everything alright?"

"Yes, everything's fine. I was just..." she trailed off, boring a sad expression. "Checking on my mother."

"How is she? Is your mom safe?"

"She's still out of it, but alive." Kallen replied, as Malik could tell there was more but dropped it

"I'm sure she's make a quick recovery." Malik stepped out of the bath, surprising Kallen as he hugged her. "You and your mom... you two are going to be fine."

"Umm... Malik...?"

Malik realizing that both of them were partially naked aside with their bodies covered in a towel. "Oh, sorry. Just thought you needed a hug." he said, letting go of the embrace as Kallen went but was stunned to see her come back in a frantic state. "What is it?"

"I can't go back now... everyone is..."

"What do you mean by everyone?"

"What's this?" a familiar voice asked as Malik understood why Kallen was in a comprised position

An easy recognizable face appeared from the other side of the partition, making both Kallen and Malik dread a look of embarrassment. Milly stood above them with a towel wrapped around their. Rai and Carlito as they saw the female members of the student council, glancing at each other before slowing turning back and walking away. However, all of that backfired when Milly spotted them herself as the two closer to her chest from behind. They could feel something behind their backs as a pair of arms already enclosed them in, with Rai and Carlito slowly turning their heads to see Milly. She looked at them, then back at Kallen and Malik.

"You guys are..." Milly trailed, seeing Malik's body closer to Kallen's

"Milly, this is the boy's-" another familiar voice said

"Is something wrong-?" a second voice also spoke

All fours turned to see Shirley and Nina were also present, surprised to see Rai, Kallen, Malik, and Carlito in the hot springs.

'Why is everyone in the student council here?!' Rai thought out loud to himself. 'Think again, I haven't spot Lelouch, Suzaku, or Rivalz. Is it just Milly, Shirley, and Nina?'

"It's not what it looks like!" Kallen exclaimed. "Whatever you think it is."

Milly looked in disbelief, not convinced. "You say it's not what it looks like, but..."

"It's nothing, really." Malik said. "We just happen to be at the same place. We never expected to see each other here to begin with."

"I-I-" Kallen stammered. "I'll be getting out first." she said, getting out of the bath as she hurried out and ran away

"Y-yeah. I'll be going, too." Malik said, leaving the bath as well passing by Milly, Shirley, and Nina. From there, he met up with Rai and Carlito who were shocked and surprised by seeing some of the student council in the hot springs

"Do I even wanna know what..."

"Let's just say it was awkward." Malik interjected. "Let's get out of here."

Suzaku had just finished his exam in a medical facility, at the Tokyo settlement. Cecile and Mariel had accompanied him as he participated in his checkup.

"The test results came out fine." the doctor said in an assuring tone. "Though you seem to pay extreme attention to discipline and to weighing the value of human life."

"Is that going to cause problems?" Suzaku asked

"These are the positive traits of a soldier." the doctor replied. "Do you think subconsciously you are comparing yourself to your father?"

Suzaku glanced at the doctor with surprise. "Huh?"

"That may be the underlying cause of your insecurity. It's quite common in the children of famous people. Your father Genbu Kururugi, the former prime minister of Japan. He was a great man." she said as Suzaku's expression turned to one of sadness

At a gravesite in the Tokyo ghettos, three people were standing and looking at the grave of Genbu Kururugi. It was Kyoshiro Todoh and two of the Four Holy Swords members, Chiba and Asahina in civilian clothes.

"Urabe and the others are late." Chiba said

"Well, this sure is an ironic meeting place, isn't it?" Asahina asked. "The grave of Prime Minister Kururugi?"

"The traitor who told us to fight to the bitter end, then committed suicide himself." Chiba said

"Enough!" Todoh said. "General Katase also committed suicide and he was a true patriot." he reminded them with a frown

Unknown to them, they were being watched by a small Britannia squad ready to move in and capture Todoh. With the Britannian squad, was a Knight of the Round judging by their sigil as they observed with binoculars.

"Fugitive has been identified. All units prepared to move in and apprehend Kyoshiro Todoh." the Knight said

"Yes, my lord." the rest of the squad said in unison

The Britannian squad advanced as they descended from their lookout points, weapons at the ready to bring in Todoh. The capture of his subordinates were optional in their objective, whereas the miracle worker himself was top priority. Todoh turned to face the current subordinates he had with him, when he noticed something off in the distance. He narrowed at the alley way and saw a small shine in the roof before he realized what was about to happen.

"Britannian hit squad! Scatter!" he shouted as the hit squad opened fire on them

Chiba and Asashina head into one direction, while Todoh headed off into another as they split up from the Britannian squad. Todoh hunkered down to an abandoned worn down store, evading the incoming squad as lights loomed above him. Once the coast was clear, he stepped out of the abandoned store and headed into the alleyway as he was spotted by a hooded girl.

"Kyoshiro Todoh." she said as one of her eyes glowed. "I order you to stand down and surrender."

For some strange reason, Todoh find himself complying with her command. It wasn't long that the Britannian squadron cornered Todoh, apprehending him in the process. Todoh tried to fight for control before being knocked out by one of the squad members of the hit squad. A black van arrived as they dragged Todoh inside before the squad went in one-by-one at a time. The hooded knight removed their hood, revealing themselves to be no other than Clara Lafranc. The Knight of Thirteen stepped inside after the squad, as the van drove off and left the scene. In the distance, Asahina and Chiba saw their commander being taken with wide eyes.

C.C was standing in the theme park known as Clovisland, named after the late prince. The lights of the theme park turned on all of a sudden, and the carousel started to activate. C.C looked and saw Mao riding on the carousel. In the far distance, Alice spotted C.C and Mao in the carousel at the theme park, using the scope of a sniper rifle. She aimed at C.C, then directly at Mao. She kept she was far enough, staying out of the 500 meter range of his Geass.

"C.C, your mind is so quiet!" Mao happily said. "It's the only one I can't read. You really are the best there is!"

"As childish as ever, I see." C.C responded

"I'm a prince on a white stallion." Mao declared in blissful happiness. "And a prince has to rescue your princess." Mao laughed as he got off the carousel. "Does that make you happy, C.C?"

"Mao, we talked about this before." C.C said. "I told you that you and I..."

"Those were all lies. Lies!" Mao said, interrupting C.C. "C.C, you love me and this is how I know." he added, holding the recordings of C.C's voice as her voice calmed Mao by calling and encouraging him. "C.C, you're the only one! The only one I want with me forever. Lelouch doesn't matter at all. If you just come with me, we'll..."

"Stop it!" C.C shouted as she drew out a gun, pointing it at Mao as he looked surprised. "I should've done this a long time ago."

A gunshot was fired as C.C fell to the ground, suffering a bullet wound on her right shoulder by Mao with his gun out.

"I knew it!" Mao sai happily, laughing and clapping his hands. "I knew you couldn't be pulling the trigger. That's cause you really love me, C.C!"

"You're wrong, Mao!" C.C replied. "I was just using you right from the start."

Mao looked displeased at what he heard from C.C when he looked at her. "What are you saying?" he pointed his gun at C.C "You shouldn't tell lies like that. You really shouldn't." he fired a couple rounds at C.C as the gunshots injured her further. "Lies are very wicked. Wicked lies!" he shot again twice. "Don't worry... I understand..." he continued shooting as she was bleeding from the gunshots

Back with Alice, she aimed her scope down on Mao as she was readying a shot. Not too long before she left, Alice put a tracker and built-in radio on C.C as she listened to the conversation her and Mao were having.

"C.C, you must listen to me." he said. "I've built a big brand-new house in Australia. A very quiet, white, immaculate special house. But to get Australia, you'll need to take on an airplane and there isn't very much room in the one I have." Mao walked to the side. "The thing is, C.C, you're a little too big on the plane." he then brought out a chainsaw from the stands as Mao looked at C.C insanely. "So that's why... I'm going to make you compact. It'll take little time at all." he concluded, maniacally slicing off a pole with the chainsaw

"Is this your revenge?" C.C asked. "Your punishment for me?"

"Oh, no, I'm not." Mao insisted. "I'm not, I'm not, I'm not. Not at all. I'm showing you gratitude."

"So this is the place that you picked." said the sudden voice of Lelouch

Both Mao and C.C were surprised to see Lelouch on the large monitor screen behind them in the theme park.

"A place where there would be no more thoughts to bother you." Lelouch said. "That only narrowed it down to one place. Here. Clovisland."

"Lelouch." Mao said

"Since your Geass has a total maximum range of 500 meters, it can't reach me here in Tokyo Tower." Lelouch stated

Mao was surprised by Lelouch's resolve as he happily laughed, clapping his hands

"That's true. That's very true." he said. "But what can do from so far, hmm? After taking all that trouble to hack into the system, what's grand plan? A remote-control attack with some battery-operated toys, or will it be some tongue-lashing to lecture me into submission."

Lelouch remained silent as Mao grinned in response

"Ah. Cat got your tongue?" Mao spoke mockingly. "If you want C.C, then you're gonna have to come here-"

"Think, Mao!" Lelouch responded. "You don't believe C.C is her real name, do you? She never whispered it to anyone." Mao paused and realized where Lelouch was going with this conversation. "But I know it, though. I know her real name. Her true name. I am the only one who does."

Mao was shocked as he looked at C.C who was still on the ground. "Is that true, C.C?" he asked in disbelief. "You never told me, ever ever. But you told it him?"

"You know why?" Lelouch asked with a smile as Mao looked at him. "It's because C.C is mine. C.C belongs to me in every way possible."

"No, she doesn't. She doesn't! She doesn't! SHE DOESN'T!" Mao said angrily. "She was mine long before she even met you!"

"I have gained every single thing from her." Lelouch said, grinning. "Including all of the parts that you have never seen, all of them."

"Lelouch!" Mao shouted in a blind rage, turning the chainsaw before charging toward the large monitor. "Face me!" he slashed the monitor using the chainsaw in sheer rage. "Lelouch, come here. Come here, now! I can look into your mind. I'll see the truth. I can see what a liar you are. Liar!"

"Mao, you've lost."

"What are you-"

Before Mao could finish his sentence, a bullet went straight through one of his legs as he crippling. He yelled in pain as his leg began to blood profusely, while C.C stood up after healing from her wounds when she noticed had been shot. Another bullet had pierced through his other leg, directly hitting his kneecap as the bullet had zipped past C.C beforehand. She turned to see Alice walking past her, making her way toward Mao as she glared at him. Mao glared back at Alice in return, furious that he was unable to detect her through her thoughts.

"What the hell?" Mao asked, with surprise and anger in his voice. "How can you be here when I didn't sense you?!"

Alice glanced at C.C before glaring daggers at Mao. "I followed her. In doing so, I kept my distance in the off chance you crossed paths with her. Meaning if you could have sensed me, you would've known about how to find me."

"You and Lelouch, you two were working together." Mao winced, glaring at Alice while in pain of bleeding and being crippled. "That's why you had Lelouch on Tokyo Tower to keep me focused on him."

"Wrong." Alice said. "That was a recording you were talking to. Lelouch isn't even in Tokyo Tower."

Mao looked at her confused. "What? What are you talking about?"

"Lelouch set up a recording of how your conversation would play out." Alice stated. "A five to ten second delay of whatever responded you made until he brought the attention of C.C." he added. "He got you. Hook, line, and sinker."

"That's a lie." Mao insisted in sudden denial. "He, he was talking to me! He was answering me!"

"In regards to C.C, he figured your thoughts would be simple enough and was banking on it. And he was right." Alice said in a mocking tone, smiling. "You were very predictable. All the while, Lelouch was already three steps ahead of you."

"He predicted every one of my answers?!" Mao asked in shock. "I don't believe. No one is that smart. You're playing games with me!"

"Your Geass may be powerful, but in the hands of an idiot like, it was doomed to fail." Alice said, pulling out a gun from her pistol. "In the end, you lost in a battle of wits."

"I know enough! From you and from him!" Mao spat in anger. "I know the fact that your mother died trying to find Suzaku the day Britannia invaded! I know how helpless you were when your little sister died in that fire. I know everything about Suzaku, your big brother! I even left him a little something to remind him." Alice glared at Mao while she pointed the barrel of the gun at Mao's head

"Alice, wait!" C.C pleaded. "Let me talk to him. I can get through to him."

"I know what really happened to your father." Mao grew a wicked grin on his face.
