The white wolf opened his eyes.

From a window, he saw Luna.

That's okay. As long as she's here, he's okay.

Briskly and scowling, he leaned forwar-and gritted his teeth as something hard rubbed his skin. He quickly realized tha whatever material it was, it was keeping him from moving.

The pain still fresh made the wolf glance down. He was wrapped in chains.

At once, he let out a frustrated roar-

an axe's tip, sharp, poked his skin. Looking up, he growled at the female mortal.

He scowled as she growled back. "I will only ask this once." She might as well be a snake. With the venomous voice and all, commented Death. "Where is my Grandmother? You answer now or I'll cut you open and put stones inside you!"

"She's dead."

He rolled his eyes at her stillness. Centuries in the job, and it has always been the same reaction.

Ugly mortals...

"What? Dead means that you can't see them here anymore in case you've forgotten."

"I know what death means!"

"Good for you. Now let's both leave before you're next!"

He tensed at the axe's tip that barely missed his left shoulder.

"Who are you?"

"Name's Death."

She rolled her eyes. "Flattering."

"Gracias niñita. Anyways, believe it or not, I didn't kill her." Better get straight to the point, but he was mentally growing exasperated by the moment. "She was a good person." He found himself saying breathlessly.

"the best..." Her sad whisper made a part of his chest tighten. He gritted his teeth as he saw his tail make its way towards the mortal and gently rubbed her side with comfort, but what was more bewildering was the devasted sigh she made before walking over to him and taking the chains off him.

"Hey, thanks, a lot, but you have no reason to be here. Just go on your way."

She didn't hide her sadness, but the girl nodded before parting again and sitting at the end of the bed across the room. Her eyes should a lot, that way obvious, but she didn't seem to face anything in particular either.

Then came the sobs.

She...looked so independent when I got here, but...she's also way more gullible than I thought

He growled to himself, knowing he can't leave her alone. He walked towards her but didn't sat on the bed.

"Kid, you should go to your parents'."

That resulted in a dead laugh from the mortal. "Well, funny thing is that they're closer to my grandma than I am now." And with the sentence said, she grabbed the nearest bag, soon begining to put food, a cup, an axe, and a blanket.

"Uh, what are you doing?"

"I have no business here anymore, I'm gonna join a group of friends of mine." She finally closed her bag and looked up at him, the girl seemed to begin to say something until yells, distant, were heard. Scowling, she walked towards the window and gingerly lifted up a curtain before dropping it at once.

"Crap!" She hissed.

Death flinched at her sudden change, and curious himself, he sniffed the air.

Smoke...humans...metal...anger

"What are you waiting for wolf?! Come with me! Unless you prefer to be a coat of course!" The girl snapped.

But he didn't move, he knew that in the eyes of the villagers, he would be practically invincible. Though that didn't stop his fur from bristling, sensing the pureness of the mob's fury.

From the nearest window, an arrow flew in, and it landed on his shoulder.

That's when he remembered how much pain sucks.

He'll admit, the girl is a smart one, because she grabbed his muzzle before he could scream, and quickly pulled the arrow off.

"Why are they here?!"

"Because they all hate me, now let's go!"

No more to be said, both rushed to a back window and ran as fast as they could. Death hoped they had been fast enough to leave the house before they could've been spotted.

He forgot how great it felt to feel his feet on the earthy ground and the breeze hugging every strand of his fur.

"Why are you smiling?" The girl panted beside him.

He was?

"Nevermind." He replied, not helping but feeling a tint of embarrassment.

-

They had continued running for a while after that, and every once in a while, one of them would look back to make sure they really were alone. An uncomfortable pattern.

"Stop!"

At her cry, Death stopped, now panting himself. The girl had already collapsed by the time he turned to look at her, and her frantic pants weren't a good sign.

Teeth gritted, he turned to look for something that might help her. When he saw nothing, he sniffed the air, and the scent of water made him realize how much he needed to drink himself.

Gingerly lifting her up, he rushed to the smell, and it wasn't until he reached it that he could finally let his chest lose. He encouraged her by leaning her to the easiest drinking position. Finally, she reached to take a good sip. Sighing, she leaned and continued drinking with fast and desperate sips. Realizing this, Death gently shoved her away and turned her head to face him.

"Careful, you know drinking fast can be a bad idea. Go on."

She did, a grateful expression in her face.

Several minutes later, the wolf and girl found themselves laying on the marshy earth, laughing historically.

Nervous laughter. But laughter overall.

"Did you see how that arrow barely missed..." She wheezed.

"Not me! It was about four inches into my skin!" That being true or not, they laughed loudly again.

-

He wasn't sure when, but he must've fallen asleep. When opening his eyes to meet the sky, as usual, the first thing he saw was Luna.

Already, his eyes started to water. What was it about the moon that he loved so much?

The next thing he saw was the mortal, relaxing by laying on the ground, watching a campfire the wolf guessed she most likely made. Upon seeing the awoken wolf, she gave a weak smile.

"Hey."

"Hey."

And a silence followed, a silence both immortal and mortal were grateful for. They didn't mention it, bit they both admitted to themselves that they've never been this calmer before. Away from, well...everyone.

It was too good to not acknowledge, so the girl smiled once again at the white wolf. "Absolutely love the quietness too, huh?"

"I could spend a month like this." He agreed.

Still with a half-hearted smile, the human focused on the fire in front of her.

"Why were they after you?"

"Huh?" The wolf looked forward a her as soon as she finished the question.

There was a tint of annoyance in her expression. "The mob! Why were they after you?"

He snorted. "Yo? Yo no hice nada, niña. The better question is, why were they so attempted to you?"

Scowling, she looked down. "Because people, everyone, is pathetic." Before he could think of anything to say, a growl rose from her throat. "My grandma was the only one who would go door by door to give free bread. The only one who would do others favors without asking for nothing in return." A smirk slowly rose from her. "Yeah, and after her sickness got word in the nearest villages, no one, not one soul, came to visit her on her last months." She thought for a moment before shrugging. "So I started stealing from them."

With a grim expression, Wolf finally said, "She doesn't seem like the type of soul who would have want you to do that."

"Stealing was the reason she lasted a few more months."

"Good things always happen to good souls." He found himself blurting out.

"Bullcrap."

He signed. Then realized: As soon as she will fall asleep tonight, he would teleport back to the Beyond. Lord knew how much he was behind on his job at this second.

"I think we should sleep."

Disappointed, the mortal explained, "But you just woke up."

"I'm tired."

She gave a defeated sighed. "Okay, goodnight then. See ya in the morning?'

He hated lies. Really, almost as much as mortals thinking they can outsmart him, so, he pretended to already be out for the night. He held back a cackle of laughter. As if he slept everyday for seven hours!

It took a while, but eventually, his patience helped him wait until he could hear the first snores.

'Go time." He whispered

Standing up with eyes closed, he began a whisper, it seemed to match with the wind of the night, so, with it, he started on his journey.

And was devasted when he opened them to the same shade they have made camp on.

With gritted teeth, he got back to his resting position, glancing at Luna, thoughts on his boss.

"If you don't mature by in three days, you will be fired out of this business, and have your own life taken, of course."
