Authors note: I hope you all liked the chapter. It's honestly my first time writing after a long time of thinking whether I should or not. I'm no professional writer and have no background in this. English is also not my first language, so there may be some mistakes. Anyway, I do it for my own sake. I'm inspired by Dreaming of Sunshine and Catch Your Breath, two very good fanfics of Naruto about rebirth.
Regarding the storyline, some things may change, and some things will stay the same. It will be good! Finally, I can "rewrite" everything I didn't want to happen in the 100. Also, I couldn't find much about life on the ark; I imagine how people would have lived. I think the ark is tough to grow up in, making early independence important.
I imagine the school system is like this: 1 grade: children of 6-8 years, 2 grade: children of 9-11 years, and 3 grade: 12-14 years. High school: 15-17 and specialised fields for kids when they turn 17/18. Some may jump grades if they are advanced enough. I realise this system will make it tough for younger children. But knowing how the ark is and the lack of resources, I imagine they would do something like this. I also imagine there to be a teacher shortage. Don't worry, I won't make a whole deal about her grades or classes. But this is how I imagine it. And I'm going to be honest, there isn't much material on life on ark.
I want a pairing in the future, but I don't want it to be forced or out of character. It will be a straight pairing
Also, this is purely a hobby, and I get no money from it. I know I don't own this story. But my OC is made by me. This will be the only disclaimer in this story.
STORY DISCLAIMER: This chapter will mention bullying in a flashback.
"Mr and Mrs Smith. You are instructed to take care of this child until she is 18 years old."
Two security guards and a nurse were positioned at the apartment's entrance. One of the guards carried a small box labelled Baby Necessities. The elderly couple expressed shock as they gazed at the guards and nurse. Clara softened her gaze upon me after a long pause, but Harry remained stoic, both aware of the potential fallout of defying the command.
"Well, of course, we will take care of her. What is her name?" Clara took me in her arms and looked at the guards.
"Valerie Johnson, the mother, is deceased and unable to care for her child. The circumstances are classified." The guards said their goodbyes and left with the nurse. Harry received a box of bottles with nutritional packs for babies from the guards and opened it. Some clothes and some cloth diapers. The bare necessities indeed.
When the guards left, Clara and Harry exchanged curious looks with each other, then turned to look at me. It was rare that adoptive parents were placed this quickly. Due to their lack of children, Clara and Harry knew they had to do this. Although they didn't expect it to happen at this moment, they resolved to take advantage of the situation.
My body is awkward; I went from having all my adult functions to having to relearn everything again. The good news is that it seems like everyone here can speak English. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Despite my lack of control over my bowel movements and my struggles to keep my head above ground, life was still good. I was placed with an elderly couple who were unable to have children. They had adult conversations about my future, but little did they know I understood every word.
The adoptive father, or grandfather, was stern. He was probably dumbstruck by having to raise a child at 60 years old. The adoptive mother was kinder. She bathed me and played with me. She reminded me of my grandmother. They were a pair of retired gardeners, both the same age and among the few elderly left on the ark. Their health was decent for their age. I was placed with them simply because there was no room for me elsewhere.
"I wanted to enjoy my retirement, Clara. If you want to raise this child, then please do. But don't involve me in this."
"Harry, we have been given this child due to the chancellor's will. Please respect it.." "I just heard a gruff sound of affirmation from the man."
As the months passed, I felt myself getting stronger. When I was about a year old, I took my first steps. Witch trilled Clara. While sitting in his chair, I approached Harry, and he looked up at me with a serious expression. I gestured towards the book he was reading and clumsily attempted to climb onto his lap. He was frozen as if a dangerous monster was about to attack. Eventually, he gave in and allowed me to sit on his lap. He struggled to communicate with children, so he read aloud from the book, occasionally pointing out pictures. The book contained simple black-and-white illustrations of various plants, indicating it was about botany. They mistook my avid attention to the book as a fluke. Thinking I was just interested in his finger-pointing around.
As I turned three years old, the elderly people around me seemed to realise my perceptiveness, and as a result, they granted me some independence. My crib was changed to a low bed on the floor, allowing me to leave bed independently. As I remained calm at night and didn't disturb them, my adoptive parents permitted me to keep the new bed. Harry's cold exterior gradually thawed when I started talking, and he began interacting with me more like a caring grandfather.
I love reading, maybe a little too much. Harry and Clara gifted me loads of children's books on plants and animals of the earth. I had to be careful not to raise their suspicion of my intelligence. A young child should not read adult books, so I sneak out of bed to find suitable reading material. I needed to find out my location. This tiny apartment hardly qualified as a living space. The air was stale and almost artificial. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I couldn't comprehend why we never went outside at all. Although I knew my previous life was over, I wanted to make the most of my new life.
As I gazed at the bookshelf, my eyes fell upon a peculiar book titled "Unity Day". I was immediately intrigued and felt an urge to read it. I tiptoed over to the bookshelf on the cold metal floor, my bare feet tapping softly. After carefully retrieving the book, I carried it to my bed and studied the cover. My fingers traced the letters of the title, and I glanced over at the corner of the room where Harry and Clara were sleeping, listening to their soft snores. Turning back to the book, I noticed it was surprisingly light. As I opened the first page, my eyes widened with curiosity.
"In the distant past, when the Earth was in a state of chaos, twelve stations floated through space, isolated from each other. One day, the stations realised that it would be better if they united and lived together. The other stations also saw the benefits of this idea and wanted to join in. Finally, when all the stations came together, they named their new community "the Ark"."
My attention kept shifting between the chaotic Earth and the vastness of space. Then, it hit me. I now reside in space. I put the book back and discovered that the world had been ravaged by a devastating nuclear attack, resulting in the death of most of humanity. The book showed that the Earth had been on fire and the atmosphere had been filled with radiation. I also learned that we lived in the 21st century, not the 20th.
I noticed my eyes welling up with tears, even though I knew this could be a different universe from the one I came from. I couldn't help but feel sorry for everyone I had left behind. My family, including my father, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts, as well as my friends and colleagues, were all gone. I felt guilty for forgetting about them, and the weight of this guilt made me cry myself to sleep.
Flashback:
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to Pattie. Happy birthday to you!" Make a wish Pattie, you're finally 6 now!" I looked over at my family happy. My family were gathered around me with smiles. My brother Mike looked particularly delighted. It wasn't until too late that I realized he had put my head on the cake. face on it. "Mike, no!" I told him. I took a handful of cake to toss, but it landed on my grandmother's face when he dodged it. She tasted the cake with her finger and smiled, "I sure know how to bake a good one."
-Time skip 3 years—
"Valerie"
"Valerie!"
After saying, "Just a moment," I rolled around in bed and covered my head with a pillow. Clara sighed and went to the bathroom.
Harry shouted, "Valerie Johnson, get your ass up now!"I opened my eyes and started giggling.
"You said ass." I couldn't help my 6-year-old humour.
"I will use my water ration right now, I swear."
I stood up on my bed, completely attentive to the old man. A small smile played on Harry's lips.
Sometimes, I forget how intelligent you are, Val. Behave well; it's your first day at school." It was my first day in grade 1, and the children were ages 6 to 8. I could never understand why they kept several children of different ages together. After considering this, I decided not to ask any questions and accepted that this was the ark. It would be a long time since I went to school. In my previous life, I was bullied every day until I started homeschooling at 13.
Harry smiled at me and said, "Val, the bathroom is free now. Clara should be finished by now. She'll help you with your hair." I walked towards the small bathroom and found Clara standing by a mirror and a high stool.
"Please have a seat on this chair, dear." I followed the instructions and sat down on the chair. When I examined my complexion closely, I realised that I looked very similar to my birth mother, Lucy. I had the same mole under my left eye, just like hers. However, my hair was a little lighter and had more of a ginger colour to it. Furthermore, my eyes were a light blue shade, but this colour reminded me of my past life. Clara began to braid my messy hair, creating small, curly strands that framed my face. "As I gazed into the mirror, my thoughts drifted away."
Flashback:
"Fatty patty, fatty patty." The chant echoed in the schoolyard. Several children were snickering and taunting me. I turned 7 yesterday and brought cookies to my classroom to make friends. I tried to stand, but tears welled up. I refused to break down. One of the kids pushed me back down onto the ground, hurting my leg. One of the older children heard the noise and went to investigate. He had brown hair and green eyes and was 12 years old. I looked up at him, hoping he would rescue me. "Stop everyone," he commanded. The kids halted and turned to face him. "If you keep pushing Patty it might cause an earthquake," he joked. Everyone started to laugh. A teacher appeared and shouted, "What's going on here?" Everyone scattered and screamed. I ignored my pain and walked away, leaving the teacher dumbfounded about the game they were playing.
"Valerie?" Clara looked at me with concern as I spaced out for a minute. Giving her a small smile, she seemed to disregard it and continued.
Now that we have finished, you are ready to go. Please remember to eat your ration before you leave and avoid walking in restricted areas.
I smiled at her as I jumped down from my chair. Clara looked at me with a serious expression. As I approached the door, Clara patted my head and told me to be good. My hands shook as I opened it for the first time alone. Harry bid me good luck as I stepped out the door.
