"So wanna go first?" Mana asked as the two duelists stood in front of each other.
"You decide." Eddie said, the energy thrumming through her and her deck violently. It was an emotion as much as a physical energy, one she couldn't pin down.
"Then you go first, my deck is better at going second," Mana answered.
"In that case…" Eddie said, as her hand hovered over her disk to draw her hand. "Allow me to make a statement:
You aren't the only one with a strong connection to the Spirit World!"
Her deck glowed before she drew her opening hand.
"What are you talking about?" Mana asked, but Eddie could tell she was trying to play stupid, though those thoughts were quickly pushed to the side as everyone started going crazy from the observation room.
"Is she seriously?" Hokuto asked.
"I think she is?" Julia added.
"Wow, Mana is gonna get cooked," Yaiba stated.
"SHINING! OPENING! DRAW!" Eddie declared estatically as she drew her hand, her cards glowing the red and black of the Darklord Halo.
Eddie was officially on cloud nine now.
"I'll start by activating Darklord Ixchel to discard herself and another Darklord card to draw 2!" Eddie said, assessing her new hand. "Now, despite my incredible opener? I have to set three and pass." Eddie said as she began to actually take in the field they were on as she grabbed an Action Card that had landed right near here.
They were in what looked like a tall round tower with rising concentric rings of energy, floating shapes in the air to be used to get from ring to ring.
"I was expecting a bit more with such a display of power, so allow me to respond in kind with real power." Mana said and suddenly Eddie felt the air grow heavier.
"I activate the Spell Card - Millennium Ankh!" Mana declared. "And with it I can Fusion Summon, by shuffling it and all possible pieces of The Forbidden One."
"Oh no."
"I can Fusion Summon The Unstoppable Exodia!... Incarnate(0/0)!"
Eddie had seen animation of Exodia activating and winning a duel with Obliterate.
She had seen footage of it emerging and winning a duel with Obliterate.
She could not have even fathomed the feeling of seeing Exodia enter the field.
AND STAY THERE.
Eddie could now put a name to the feeling her deck had been radiating:
Fear.
"But I am not done yet, I shall activate Blue-Eyes of the Heart in my hand, discarding it to add another Millennium Ankh to my hand-"
"I activate my facedown Sanctified Darklord, sending Nergal from my hand to the grave to negate Exodia's effect for this turn!" Eddie said panickedly.
"Quick Effect, when a Spell or Trap card is activated, I can negate its activation."
"Ahahehe." Eddie laughed hysterically. "Uh. Okay! Crud!"
"Now for my Battle Phase, Exodia… OBLITERATE!"
"But it has zero attack!" Ayu shouted.
"For the moment, for during damage calculation Exodia-"
"I activate Miracle, targeting my facedown! It can't be destroyed this turn!" Eddie said quickly, before she could lose the chance to do so.
"And I will take this Action Ca-AH!" Mana shouted as she fell and tripped, as kanij for bad luck made her trip as she had accidentally picked up an Action Trap.
Mana LP: 7200/ Eddie LP: 8000
"Exodia gains attack equal to my Life Points… which is now 7200." She said as she got back up the attack going through but just flipped Capricious Darklord(0/1600) face-up.
Eddie, meanwhile, had used the distraction to start looking for an Action Card, but-
"And I shall go to my End Phase, where The Unstoppable Exodia's other effect activates, allowing me to set a Obliterate or Exodd card directly from my deck," Mana said.
"I draw." Eddie said moments before picking up an Action Card. "Okay, okay… uh… oh wow this Action Card is scummy, I activate Lock Draw, preventing you from drawing until you throw an Action Card from your hand to your grave!"
"The Unstoppable Exodia Incarnate will negate that!" Mana said as the girl knew that was bad for her.
"Figured as much." Eddie said as she rolled under a floating cube to pick up another one. "Crap… Welp, I'm going to set my Action Card."
"Huh!"
"WHAT!" Everyone who wasn't in the know shouted.
"And… end my turn." Eddie said, pained.
"During the End Phase, Exodia will set another card just like before." Mana said.
"That's both End Phases?!" Eddie asked in shock.
"Correcto," Mana said. "I draw and during my Standby Phase, I will have to pay a thousand life points to keep the big guy around."
Mana LP: 6200/ Eddie LP: 8000
"So I will activate the card that was just set, the Quick Play - Obliterate! Blaze!" Mana said. "Which gives my Exodia a specific effect. By paying half of my life points, I can destroy all Spell and Trap Cards on the field-"
"Miracle Part 2!" Eddie said, flipping her facedown Action Card as she continued to scramble for another.
"-and then equipping 5 Forbidden one cards to The Unstoppable Exodia Incarnate giving him 2000 ATK for each." Mana explained.
The Unstoppable Exodia Incarnate(7200- 17200 ATK)
"That is a lot of attack points!" Yuzu shouted.
"I would like to state for the audience that my face down she destroyed was Magic Cylinder." Eddie declared, half for dramatics and half to stall.
"But thankfully Big Sis's monster is in defense position." Yuya said.
"Hehehe," Mana laughed. "A monster affected by Oblitarate Blaze… gains piercing."
"It gets wha-"
"Feel the power of the Unstoppable! Exodia!" Mana shouted as the beam was gathered. "RAGING HELLFIRE! EXODDO FLAME!"
And then the attack points went over 20000.
And Eddie's world went white.
Eddie woke up to the sound of Reiji's voice.
"I shall Fusion Summon, Level 6! D/D/D Flame King Genghis."
"Called it…" Eddie said from the ground (?), sitting up to see she'd been laid on a blanket for the moment, but everyone's attention was on the duel.
"I construct the Overlay Network to Xyz Summon, Rank 4! D/D/D Wave King Caesar."
Well, everyone but Ayu. "Hey Big Sis," Ayu said.
"I Synchro Summon, Level 7! D/D/D Gust King Alexander!"
"Hallo, Ayu." Eddie said as she got to her feet. "How's Yuya doin' so far?"
"He is getting his butt kicked."
"I set the Pendulum Scale 1, D/D Savant Kepler and Pendulum Scale 10, D/D Savant Galilei to Pendulum Summon two Level 8 D/D/D Doom King Armageddon."
"Oh no, Akabaka cracked the Savants." Eddie said genuinely as she took in the board state.
Reiji LP: 7100/ Yuya LP: 4000
Reiji had the five monsters he had just turboed out and Yuya had Timegazer and Stargazer in his Pendulum Zones with only Odd-eyes Pendulumgraph Dragon and a singular face-down as his defense.
"How many turns in are we?"
"They're at turn seven; he first Fusioned a Lady named Dark to get life points instead of taking damage from his spells, so Yuya just managed to get him down from 14000 to 8000." She explained as Reiji entered the battle phase.
"Ah, okay." Eddie said, still feeling a bit shaky on her feet and sore all over. "Yuya can still win, so let's root for him."
"I don't think he is," Ayu said, half saddened and half awed.
Eddie hoped Yuya had listened to her and added some variant of Mirror Force to his deck and it was his face down.
And then Pendulumgraph was destroyed.
"Next I will attack you directly with D/D/D Doom King Armageddon!" Reiji declared.
"Sorry Akabaka, but my Big Sis gave me some advice to include some battle traps, and this was the only one in my binder I had left, I activate The Trap Card - Drowning Mirror Force!"
"THAT'S MY BOY LET'S GO!" Eddie cheered.
"I activate Solemn Judgment."
"I'm gonna kill him." Eddie said, flipping a complete 180.
"My attack is going to-"
And then his board exploded as Reiji's duel disk suddenly started sparking.
His monsters exploding in a clear malfunction.
"Huh?" Yuya said.
"It seems that the Pendulum Cards I made are not stable yet." Reiji said with a sigh as the duel was canceled.
"This, truly, is divine justice." Eddie said with a solemn (heh) nod.
"While we have to reach a conclusion later, Yuya Sakaki, do you remember when I said that Pendulum has not reached its final evolution?"
"Yeah."
"Has this duel shown you what lies beyond? For I have seen a glimpse."
"I have," Yuya replied. "Thanks to all the duels today, seeing all those Extra Deck summons, I think I have a path."
"Good, I hope to see what you produce for the Arc League Championship." Reiji said, and with that the two returned to the observation room.
"Excellent showing Reiji," Henrietta said. "All of you, from both LDS and You Show. Several duelists have evolved today and that progress is something we should all strive towards."
"Ehehe, thank you ma'am," Yuzu said with a blush.
"Eden Hawthorne," Henrietta said.
"Ma'am." Eddie said neutrally. Her head was still spinning a bit.
"We called on Mana Muto to show you what kind of duelists you will be facing in the future as she is a pro." Henrietta stated.
"Exodia is not a fair comparison to literally any other deck." Eddie stated flatly. "Especially not that… hopefully Ghost Rare… behemoth."
"It's not." Reiji said. "Also that is only a small part of her Fusion Deck."
"Lemme guess, Chimera?" Eddie asked.
"Your ability is uncanny," Henrietta said. "But don't take the loss to heart, your deck and soul grew in response to the threat you faced."
"I'm aware, I had two of my fusion cards in my opening hand… and no way to use them." Eddie said. "Maybe I should invest in a regular Polymerization or something…"
"We can send you a few copies," Reiji said. "And Gongenzaka."
"Yes?"
"If you are interested in new cards, LDS would like to assist in the endeavor as You Show came out the victor in the number of wins in this competition of ours." Reiji stated.
"Speaking of new cards." Eddie said. "I actually acquired a card you probably would want to see, Akabaka."
"Please do not." Reiji said, which made his Mother giggle.
"Oh, but I insist! It's one of those rare cards we've talked about previously." Eddie said, still conversationally as she took her personal victory of getting his mother to laugh.
"Ah right, that we did, did not think you would get one so quickly," Reiji said.
"I had some help." Eddie said, eyes darting to Kaito.
"I wish to have a conversation with you afterward," Kaito said.
"Of course, I've been wanting to have one with you as well, are any of your friends going to be joining?" Reiji asked.
"No, just me." Kaito replied. "One is very apologetic about not being able to do so."
"They should be, I am a very busy man," Reiji continued. "But first, Hawthorne?"
"Yes, shall we?" Eddie said with a grin.
And with that they went into Reiji's Limo for the conversation they were about to have with Yuzu and Yuya looking on, hella confused about what was happening.
Eddie waited until they were in motion to start. "So. Now that the cameras are gone!" Eddie said as her Duel Persona slipped away. Not that it had been much help anyway. "Akaba(ka), meet Kaito Tenjo, one of the strongest duelists of the Xyz dimension. Kaito Tenjo, meet Reiji Akaba, CEO of Leo Corporation, the now ironically named anti-Leo Akaba group."
"A pleasure," both boy geniuses said at once.
They really were cut from the same cloth.
"Now the card." Reiji stated.
Eddie pulled it from her bra, the one place she knew no one would have checked. She took some delight in the instant redness to the teenagers faces despite not having shown them a thing. "This… is your missing fusion instructor." She said, holding out the card.
"...Thank you." Reiji said as he took the card. "Now we can start proper work on reversing this."
"I can share the notes me and my own father have on the subject," Kaito said. "And as said my friend apologizes for the act, he… our heads were not in the right space."
"Allow me to rephrase for him- it was a perfect confluence of shit- angry and grieving duelists arrive, see a group with their enemy's name on it, meet a teacher from that group using Fusion… an almost reasonable conclusion was made." Eddie said flatly. "Thankfully, I met these idiots before they could do any further harm. Well, Yuto found me, but same thing."
"Grateful for that," Kaito said.
"And I am too," Reiji said, "I would not like it if more of our staff got sealed into cards."
"Further good news: they have a few captured Academia disks that they've used the tech from to use their portable RSV, in addition to the Carding program." Eddie said.
"That will be useful, we have been working on compressing the system especially for action fields as they are an advantage against Fusion," Reiji said.
"On that note: my chat with the Xyz-boys has given me a very useful insight into Leo Akaba's plan." Eddie said.
"And how is that?" Kaito asked.
"My knowledge of history includes the events of, at minimum, the Pendulum, Fusion, and Xyz dimensions. It's safe to assume the same for Synchro. Except, they weren't in concert, but nearly sequential, across the span of many years. Therefore, it's only reasonable to assume that what I consider the natural progression of those events is the 'Utopia' Leo Akaba seeks to create." Eddie stated. "In other words, he's trying to combine them into a contiguous timeline."
"He wants to return to what once was with no care for the present even if it is not the same," Reiji said.
"I can only assume." Eddie agreed.
"And will sacrifice countless lives to do so," Kaito scowled. "Damn him, how does he think he has the right to do this?"
"Either he found irrefutable proof of the split, or…" Eddie's eyes unfocused slightly. "Or… he saw… a world… where they were already… oh…"
"What?" Reiji asked. "What did you realize?"
"He… might have seen… my universe…" Eddie realized slowly. "Or one like it, at least." One like the shows, or her actual universe… she didn't know which was worse. "...That's why the cards are all wrong."
"Huh?"
"I think the cards in our universes may have developed differently because of the split." Eddie realized.
"I can see the logic in such an assumption," Reiji stated. "What is your timeline?"
"Of release dates?" Eddie could give a rough estimate of most packs thanks to her Progression knowledge, but she wasn't that good.
"Your world has all the summoning mechanics, but I do not assume they were all made at once." Reji clarified.
"Oh, okay yeah, ritual and fusion were both part of the game from the start, more or less. Then Synchro's came out around 2008, Xyz came out 3 years after that, Pendulum… uh, 2014 I think? Yeah, it was roughly 3 years apart for each, including the next one."
"That is quite the fast development," Kaito said in shock.
"Though it was probably due to the difference in the rules of how cards are made between our universes." Reiji said. "Releases between new cards are significantly slower; new packs are only made once, sometimes twice a year."
"We had roughly… somewhere between 4 to 11 card packs a year for a while, though the size of the sets varied, and then at least 3-4 structure or starter decks a year, which often had exclusive cards." Eddie guesstimated.
"The last structure deck we released was five years ago." Reiji said.
"Interesting. I know there was a… what was it, Darkworld… Crystal Beasts… Traptrix, that one was fun I actually bought it, and… oh yeah, that one Blue-Eyes Deck that's been reprinted continuously since 2013 that had the Synchro Monster."
"...Seto Kaiba's grave just became a new powersource," Reiji said.
"Yeah it still baffles me that your Kaiba disappeared without really doing anything notable after Battle City, the one I knew sent cards into space. And taught aliens how to duel."
"That sounds like a Seto Kaiba thing," Reiji replied, not seeming surprised by the statement.
"Who is this Seto Kaiba?" Kaito asked, seeming very surprised by the statement (by Kaito standards).
"Important figure in both our histories."
"He invented the duel disk and Solid Vision." Eddie added. "And also is the reason Duel Monsters got as big as it did."
"Well, that gives credence to the Last Thursday Movement…" Kaito muttered.
"Actually, that's a pretty big point there, who invented the Duel Disk, Solid Vision… heck, who made Duel Monsters?" Eddie asked.
"That was made by…" Kaito began but quickly trailed off. "I… don't know."
"What company produces cards then?" Eddie asked.
"Well the main maker of D-pads, Gazers, and cards is the Heartland Company," He answered.
"As in, your father's company." Eddie added for Reiji's sake.
"Yes."
"So the fact you don't know the answer to those questions…" Eddie trailed off.
"Last Thursday-ism indeed," Reiji said. "The belief that the universe started existing last Thursday and everything else was just recreated retroactively… which might be true in our case if the timeline split, and then from those points it… Had to start from somewhere, so it went backwards from the present."
"Even if that is true, at this point the why doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is stopping Leo Akaba, there being a split timeline, divided timeline, a past that was constructed, does not matter what matters is the present and the future, and Fusion is a danger to both." Kaito stated.
"Well said," Reiji stated. "I do not care if a previous version of me existed, the only version of me that is relevant is the one that lives here and now, and the one that will live in the future."
"Okay." Eddie said tiredly as the excitement at the topic dropped and she could feel the BLAZE in her bones. God, getting Exodia'd hurt. "I just hope he hasn't figured out the other summoning type we have back home, we're kind of fucked if he has."
"You have more outside of Pendulum?" Reiji asked.
"Yeah, it's called Ldslkafklmewpo what the fuck?" Eddie couldn't help but curse at the verbal garbage she had just spewed. "Lsldkaiw. Linlifadolw;k. Lopwqkiklko." She tried repeatedly.
"...Interesting," Reiji said.
"They're blue. A different shade of blue from Rituals. With red arrows," Eddie said. "If you see a card like that? Burn it, and I'm talking real fire. With gasoline if possible."
"You can describe but not say the name, due to the fact such a thing does not exist, or possibly can't exist in our universe at this point in time," Kaito theorized.
"God I hope so, they kneecap literally every Extra Deck summoning type whether you use them or not." Eddie whined. "I literally quit playing for years because of it." Well, technically she stopped right before Pendulum came out, but right as she'd been about to get back into it, bam! Link summoning, and she didn't touch the game again until Master Rule 5.
The two looked at her in sympathy.
"Well since it's not relevant let's move onto other things…"
And so the conversation trickled on as Kaito and Reiji started laying the foundation for a partnership, and eventually the Limo came to stop in front of the Sakaki Residence.
"Well gentlemen, this meeting was quite meaningful, but I believe this is my stop." Eddie said, eager to lie down for a while.
"Will talk to you later," Reiji replied as they drove off.
Eddie thus stumbled towards the door, having slightly recovered during the car ride. The earlier spin cycle courtesy of Kite did not help.
Also, her pride.
She'd acted tough, but it still stung to get all that hype just to get instantly knocked down.
Maybe she should try learning how to Destiny Draw…?
That was what she was thinking as she opened the front door.
"Welcome back home Eddie," Yoko greeted her. "Yuya said you would be a little late, apparently you were hanging out with boys." She looked her over. "And got very busy."
"...I almost threw up at the thought of that."
"Sorry, part of the girls only club?"
"I'm bi, but they're teenagers." Eddie said. Older teens, but still. Ick.
"Didn't you say you were one now with that body of yours?" Yoko asked.
"I have been paying taxes for 7 years. I'm still an adult." Eddie said. "And teenagers are all automatically children to me."
"Hmm, try and ask Henya out, she is a lonely widow now after all," Yoko suggested. Eddie honestly wanted to at least try it just to mess with Reiji.
"Oh right, I didn't get to ask, what's with the second kid that I didn't find any information on online?" Eddie asked, that having been burning in her mind.
"Second kid?" Yoko asked.
"Recent adoption or secret kid recently brought to light, got it." Eddie said with a nod. "His name was… Reira. Guppy age."
"I love that nickname for the younger ones," Yoko said. "But enough with the teasing, Yuya is in his room and you look like you need a shower."
"Yes, please, I've been flipped around more than a coin in a casino today…" Eddie said as she headed upstairs to do just that. "Yuya, I'm getting a shower, we can talk about the important stuff after." She said as she passed his door.
"Sure." Yuya replied.
The hot water felt nice to alleviate the burn in her muscle and slightly soothe the sting on her pride.
Afterwards, when she was dressed in the softest clothes she owned (in the Sakaki house), she sat on the couch and was joined by Yuya. And Kilo, who really liked laying in her lap.
"Alright… info, or reviewing duels first?" Eddie asked. "Not that mine would take long."
"Sure, we can look yours over quick." Yuya said.
And Eddie confirmed the horrible suspicion she'd had on the ride to the Sakaki household.
She'd never added modesty shorts to her Costume.
"... and basically, that's the likely reason for the differences between what I know and your history." Eddie finished explaining.
"My… Brain…" Yuya groaned as he collapsed into the sofa after having followed along all the complicated stuff that had just been dumped on him.
"Hey, it's not that complicated. It's like only having 10 cards from a deck given to 4 people each, so they fill in the gaps with their own cards, versus the original 40 card deck."
"I understand… it's… just a lot," Yuya said. "Why did it have to get so complicated, like what is even going on with me… am I an actual person?"
"YES YOU ARE! I REMEMBER THE PAIN!"
"Yoko beat me to it, but yeah, of course you are." Eddie said. "I think it's more like… you're part of a set of quadruplets."
"Quadruplets that are going to eat each other's souls or something if we duel each other," Yuya stated.
"I mean… yeah, but…" Eddie scrambled for something to say, before her eyes landed on his pendant. "Hey, on that note, your necklace. Have you had that your whole life?"
"I got it from my dad when I was a baby," Yuya answered. "To remind me that no matter how hard you fall you will always swing back."
"Just checking, a few of the previous Yu-boys have had special, magical pendants, and considering Yuzu and her counterparts have those bracelets I just wanted to check."
"Yeah the King of Games had that Puzzle," Yuya said. "...Wait, that was magic?"
"Oh, like you wouldn't believe." Eddie said. "It was one of seven items of massive power called the Millennium Items. Those were the first tools used to harness the power of Duel Monsters, followed by the predecessors to the Duel Disks called the Diadhank, but the Millenium Items were focuses for powerful Shadow Magic, made by the brother of a pharaoh… roughly 3000 years ago, I think? 3000 or 5000, the important bit is that they could force a Shadow Game, like nothing can stop it other than ending, and then the loser suffers a penalty chosen by the one who set it. Usually getting sent to the Shadow Realm, but it could also be something more specific like suffering from horrible hallucinations, destroying the evil in someone's heart, or straight up dying."
"Well Shadow Games are going on my no-no list," Yuya said as he looked a bit green.
"Thankfully the Millenium Items have been permanently sealed away when Yugi laid the spirit of the Pharaoh Atem, who had been inside the Puzzle, to rest. In the original timeline, that also sealed away the Egyptian God Cards, but since you guys had the Wicked Gods I can only assume the same." Eddie assured him. "Also, that is why I was asking about your pendant. Yugi literally had an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh in his giving him advice."
"Yeah I am not hearing any advice from this thing," Yuya said as he held up his Pendulum to his ear.
"Heh… actually, that reminds me, when you get the chance, you should go to the Field at You Show and try summoning… maybe not Odd-Eyes, just whoever feels right when you go for it, and try talking to them." Eddie said. "Cause I know Odd-Eyes is a powerful duel spirit, but it's so powerful that I can't tell if there's any others in your deck."
"Is that what you do then we leave?" Yuya asked.
"That and help Sensei clean up after you guys."
"Hehehehe," Yuya awkwardly laughed.
"I am being serious about that though, I think you should try talking to your cards." Eddie said. "I know I need to do that tomorrow after what happened today."
"Oh yeah you Shining Drew! What did you get?" Yuya asked in excitement over the prospect of new cards.
"Right, I forgot to actually check…" Eddie said, pulling out her deck box (she'd habitually put it into her pocket) and spread out the cards on the coffee table. "Hmm… looks like… a playset of Uprising and of mah boi."
"Is that their Fusion Card?" Yuya asked as he looked at the purple framed card that was distinct from all the others.
It was also foil, which was cool.
"Yup, that is The First Darklord, Morninsgtar's true form." Eddie said proudly. "Apparently I had it backwards and he's the real one, after the Uprising anyway, and the main deck one is a pale reflection. Maybe of his past? I've tried not to pry too much."
"Oh wow," He said as he touched the card. "I wonder what kind of forms Odd-Eyes could obtain if I could use Fusion."
"At minimum, there's Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon and Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon." Eddie said. "Plus, I'm pretty sure he can combine with his counterparts one at a time… but I can't recall what they… oh that Solemn Bastard sealed my memories of whatever the complete version is. Bastard."
"Huh?"
"You know the guy on Solemn Judgment?"
"Yeah."
"He's real, he's a bastard, and he's part of why I'm here."
"Ah." Yuya had some funny reaction faces.
"Changing the subject," Eddie said with the subtly of a brick. "Sorry I didn't make any new Pendulum's for ya."
"It's fine," Yuya responded. "With Reiji having figured out how to make his own now, I could ask him. It makes me wonder if we are going to see a new booster pack with them in the coming weeks."
"Maybe not weeks, Reiji definitely focused on D/D/D first and it clearly doesn't work yet fully." Eddie said, before shrugging. "But then again, necessity breeds innovation, so who knows. Maybe the data you gave him will be the difference."
"...I wanna see if I send a bill that says he owes me money he would pay it for all the Pendulum Data," Yuya schemed.
"Yuya dear, that is called fraud."
"...aw."
"Technically it's not fraud since Yuya invented Pendulums, moreso asking for royalties." Eddie said, playing devil's advocate.
"True, there is precedent with other Shining Draws if they are new cards, they are owned by the person, but I will have to ask our lawyer how that applies to an entire summoning type." Yoko muttered.
"Hear that Yuya? You're gonna set a precedent."
"Hopefully it works out."
"Eh, even if it doesn't, you're still gonna kick everyone's butts when they challenge you." Eddie said. "And then You'll Show 'Em who's boss."
"That my boy will!"
