The Viking and Her Dragon

This is Berk

The Archipelago… On the Island of Berk…

The sun hadn't even made a spec of light over the horizon of the Archipelago. The Archipelago were a series of dozens of islands across a vast ocean. There were sheep, yaks, jaguars, wild boars, lions, you name it… The islands of these great islands had it all. But, they weren't just inhabited by simple beasts. No, no… They had much, much, more.

The Island of Berk. An island ruled by Vikings for over several generations. The Vikings were led by Stoick the Vast, Chieftain of Berk. The Greatest Viking in this Era. For now that is.

Vikings had pests of course. Some had rats, worms, rodents, mosquitoes… But Berk has…

A female teen blonde Viking hears a lot of commotion outside the door of her home. She rushes to the door, quickly opening it and seeing many other Vikings running around… and then, a large reptilian creature with large wings flies close to the ground. It had no arms, and was coated with red skin and four large horns. It was a Monstrous Nightmare… and its attention was on the young teen. The girl quickly closed the door as flames fired straight for the door. Luckily, the door held from the blast and shielded the teen Viking.

"Dragons…" The teen Viking said rather winded already.

The petite teen blonde viking has long, blonde hair wrapped in a braid down her back, bangs that initially cover the left side of her face, and a metal-studded, leather band across her forehead. She wears a striped steel-blue sleeveless shirt, tan cloth bracers on her arms (each bit of cloth goes between her first and second finger) with arm wrappings above them, a red skirt with spikes surrounding it and another black skirt underneath the spiked one, and dark blue leggings. She also wears a belt decorated with silver skulls with a pouch tied to it and shoulder pads.

Ah yes, Astrid Hofferson. One of the next generation of Vikings for Berk. The next Generation of Vikings to partake in the Dragon-Viking War. Speaking of which, Dragons. Yes, that's right, Dragons of all creatures were swarming in the morning and attacking Berk. Filled with insatiable hunger and dangerous fire that could be shot from their mouths.

Astrid quickly opened the flaming door of her home and moved it to the side. She quickly ran down the steps and searched for the other teens. No doubt doing their job of putting out the fires.

Alright Astrid, start your narration!

"Dragons and Vikings… Just another average morning on Berk. The ongoing war between us and them… Sometimes, you wonder, how did it all start? And just why exactly haven't we moved? Well, We're Vikings, occupational hazards just aren't enough to get us to back down. Dragons? For us, they're just another hazard. My name's Astrid Hofferson, I'm a Fire Duty Viking… For now at least. Until I receive proper training for fighting and killing dragons." Astrid narrates like reading a book.

Astrid continues to run through the village when an explosion sets off right behind her, a Gronckle fired off its lava balls right at the ground and sent Astrid forward a little. Causing her to roll a little until she managed to land on her back. A viking that had been hit by said Gronckle Lava Ball stands right over top of Astrid with his beard sparking slightly with heat.

"RAAAAGGHHH! Morning," The Viking gave a war cry and created Astrid before running off to continue fighting the other dragons. Astrid looked to see the Viking continue to run while she looked upside down, not bothering to turn over. The viking kept running with an Axe in hand… until he got hit by yet another Gronckle Lava Ball, sending him into a wall. Which he bounced right off of and got back up with a lickity split. Rushing back into combat.

Astrid rolled over and got back to her feet and ran through the Vikings that went to continue the fight against the Dragons that swarmed and tried to steal their food.

She managed to make her way through all the chaos that unfolded and saw the other Teens in eyesight.

"Oh yea, I don't work alone. There's the Twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Fishlegs, big nerd over Dragons. Snotlout, biggest bonehead and numbskull of the bunch. They all have been trying to get into the Dragon fighting too. There's one other teen, he's the Chieftain's son, Hiccup. Although, he's not a part of the Fire Duty Vikings. He's the Apprentice of Gobber the Blacksmith, I think." Astrid continued to narrate as she got to the Teen Group, all of whom were being assigned buckets by an Elder Viking, who frequently handed the teen vikings buckets.

"Astrid Hofferson, you're late, little lady," The Elder Viking said sternly.

"Sorry Mildew sir, got caught up in the Dragon fire…" Astrid said, trying to stay out of trouble.

"No excuses, young lady, you either get here on time or you can burn with the rest of the houses," Mildew said as he sternly handed Astrid a bucket, making it hit her chest. She grunted lightly with the hit, but tried to hold it in so as to not give Mildew his satisfaction. Mildew had always been hard and rough on Astrid. Why? She hadn't the faintest clue. Maybe it's just because she was somewhat of the stronger, more popular Vikings of the rest of the teens. Or maybe it was something else. Either way, she really didn't like this guy. Astrid held onto the bucket and tried to stand up straight in line with the rest of the teens. She stood next to Ruffnut and Tuffnut both of which were fighting over a bucket for themselves.

"Alright, lads, we got fires across the western border, we have water barrels lined up around the center section. For every fire you put out, that's five less push ups from your daily two hundred. Now, I don't want any slacking, and if I catch one of ya trying to get out of 'ur job, I'll double the push-ups to four hundred for the next week every day, Is that understood?" Mildew claimed sternly as he paced back and forth in the line in front of the teens. Fishlegs took a huge and nervous gulp through his throat at the sound of over four hundred push-ups if that was even possible. Snotlout was a strong Viking, muscle-wise at least, but he wasn't sure he could do four hundred push-ups for the next week and still keep going at it with upcoming training. Ruffnut and Tuffnut were also a bit skittish and deathly nervous about the idea of four hundred push-ups for the next seven days. Astrid wasn't too worried about it on the other hand, she was more concerned with attempting to make her mark as the first teen viking to take down a dragon. Astrid, out of the corner of her eye, noticed Hiccup running for the Smithy to probably do his part of the cause.

"Sir, yes sir!" The Teens shouted in unison, with Astrid being the exception.

"Good, now go on!" Mildew said.

Fishlegs and Snotlout were the first to one of the barrels and picked it up. Astrid, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut followed in suit with buckets in hand.

"You're probably wondering, what kind of Dragons do we deal with here at Berk? Well, we got the Deadly Nadders, Dragons that essentially have the hottest fire of any dragon as well as spikes on their tail that can be thrown at you like arrows. The lumbering Gronckles, rock eaters and lava spewers. Not the fastest and most powerful, but they're nothing to sneeze about. Zipplebacks, two heads, twice the death. Monstrous Nightmares, only the best Vikings go after those things. They have a nasty habit of setting themselves on fire," Astrid Narrates.

The teens then get to the fire that spread across the western side of the village. There were a few Dragons, but their attention was on the sheep and the Vikings that took the fight to them.

Snotlout and Fishlegs sat down the barrel with Tuffnut, Ruffnut, and Astrid filling up their buckets with water. Astrid quickly threw the water at a few flames. Tuffnut and Ruffnut were still fighting over the same bucket, but they somehow managed to put out a few flames themselves. A Monstrous Nightmare flew over a house and shot a stream of flames down on it, causing the fire to spread and cover the house. Fishlegs and Snotlout got their buckets and threw their water on it.

"Then of course, there's one other Dragon, They call it the Night Fury… a dragon that no one's ever seen. But, today, that's the least of our worries," Astrid continues to Narrate as the blast of a Night Fury is seen from afar on the westside as it shoots down a Catapult.

Astrid throws her bucket of water on another pile of flames… But then, a vibrating sound is felt in the air. Despite all the flames and the chaos that unfolded, slight vibrations could be felt. It felt as though Astrid's chest was shaking from the vibrations. Most of the Vikings stopped what they were doing, even the Dragons seemed to know what was coming. Many of them took off into the air to get away from the oncoming attack.

Everyone then shouted…

"GODZILLA! GET TO COVER!" Many of the Vikings shouted.

The teens quickly leapt out of the way, taking cover to the nearest non-flammable source. Suddenly, a massive shadow flew over the village, and following in suit… was a huge wave of blue flames that struck several homes… even so much as creating a huge gash in the terrain. The figure was huge, bigger than most of the other dragons… But its actual size was impossible to tell. The Godzilla as they called it, made a massive strafing run with blue plasma-like fire, sending a tsunami of blue fire across several houses.

"A Godzilla. One of the strongest dragons to ever attack Berk," Astrid Narrates.

The teens who took cover from most of the blue flames quickly came out of cover and tried getting back to work, but Astrid stayed where she was, hiding under a few pieces of metal, watching on as the blue flames ended and the Godzilla disappeared. She scooched underneath the metal pieces and looked on into the darkness where the Godzilla concealed itself.

"It wasn't just one of the strongest Dragons… It was 'THE' strongest Dragon. It would do Strafings runs of the hottest fire. Even hotter than a Deadly Nadder. It never steals food, never reveals itself, and…" Astrid narrates.

Astrid looks on as the vibrations start again and the Godzilla does yet another Strafing run of blue flames and a tsunami of fire is launched on the western side of the Village. Only for it to disappear again into darkness.

"Shows no mercy. The Godzilla, besides the Night Fury, is the only dragon that no one has ever seen or killed. And that's why I'm going to be the first to pull it off," Astrid finishes her narration.

"Astrid, we could really use your help right now!" The voice of Fishlegs is heard from a distance. Astrid shakes her head to be brought back to reality. She goes back to the barrel with her bucket. The blue flames continue to spread ferociously and viciously. Astrid then looks over at the large Catapult that hadn't been used or shot down yet. She looks behind her and sees one of the larger chained bolas that Catapults use to shoot down a hoard of dragons… But what if it could be used to take down a single larger dragon?

"Okay, Astrid, we almost got the entire western side cleared up, we just need to… Astrid?" Fishlegs talked as he came back to the barrel, believing he was talking to Astrid who he thought was still there… Only for her to in fact, not be there. Her bucket was here, but she wasn't…

"Astrid?! ASTRID!" Fishlegs shouted.

"Yo, Fishy boi, what're you shouting for? Less shouting, more firefighting," Snotlout said to the much nervous Fishlegs. Said large viking turned to Snotlout with a deep feeling of dread and anxiety.

"Snotlout, Astrid is gone! She was here just a moment ago!" Fishlegs said worriedly and indefinitely freaked out.

"That babe is fine, Fishlegs, besides, Mildew is just gonna make her do a bunch of push-ups if she's slacking… Honestly, now that I think about it, she might get super buff by the end of the week. Wouldn't that be something?" Snotlout said, with the fantasy images of a more muscular Astrid appearing in his mind. Fishlegs pinched the top of his nose at Snotlout's oblivious and heinous thoughts.

Meanwhile, with said missing Viking, Astrid was currently pushing a cart of the larger chain bolas. She was hoping this would work, if it didn't then all this was for nothing. But she had to try. She needed to prove she can fight. Not that she had been looked down on before, other than by some of the Adults, and Mildew… But Mildew can go shove a dragon tooth up you know where. This was to prove to herself that no matter how big the Dragon, it can be taken down.

Astrid then started making her way down to the dock where a small canoe was tied. Astrid lifted up the Large Bola and placed it in the boat, hoping it wouldn't sink due to the weight. Luckily for her, it held. Astrid quickly got in it and paddled towards the Catapult off the shore. The dragons off on the main island were still focused on getting food now that the Godzilla had done its few strafing runs. But it would do it again, Astrid just had to hurry and catch it while it was still west of here. This may be her only chance to shoot it down.

Astrid then docked the canoe on the rocky bed. She picked up the large metal bola and started making her way up the stairs. It was difficult and straining, but Astrid Hofferson was stronger than she looked. Once she made it up the steps and to the Catapult itself Astrid got to work, quickly grabbing a lever and pushing it back to lower the holder. Usually boulders would be used for this, but they could also be used to throw bolas of a certain size. Astrid picked up the metal Bola and placed it in the holder. Astrid then began to position the aim of the Catapult to where the Godzilla would most likely do its final strafing. Which was positioned on the far north side of the Village. With great effort, Astrid managed to push the catapult to aim where it needed to be. Her arms and legs had nearly given out for how heavy it was. Just getting this thing to turn was more than enough. Usually, two adult vikings would turn the catapult, but Astrid had to make due with only herself.

Once she was positioned, she stood ready. Listening, hearing, feeling for the vibrations and the figure in the sky. She also had to listen for a Night Fury, given that it had just blasted the catapult that was being used on the Eastern side, it would no doubt attack this one. Astrid needed the timing to be perfect, precise, and all the luck that Freyr could offer her. If this was to be done, it needed to be done right.

"Come on… Come on, give me something to hit," Astrid whispered quietly to herself, praying and hoping that whatever she hits, will in fact, hit.

Then she could feel it. The vibrations. They were occurring again. Astrid's chest felt heavy, her organs felt the raptures heavily this time since she was a little higher in the air. She could see the dragons near the north side start to clear off. Even the Vikings over there were fleeing and taking cover. Astrid positioned the catapult to where it would fire right after its strafing run. Astrid took a heavy exhale. She was starting to get tired, and exhausted from all this. But it needed to work, she NEEDED this. Not for anyone's approval, not for her status, but to prove that she CAN and WILL take down a Dragon of exponential size.

Once it was ready, she could then hear it… The charging of the blue flames. And then, off in the distance, a ray of blue flames fired upon the ground, making a strafing run across the north side of the village. Astrid ran to the lever and then pushed it forward. She ran so fast towards the lever she actually ended up falling over it and pushing it down with her weight. The catapult launched the large metal Bola as it flew in the air, opening up and swinging around as if it had been thrown by Thor himself.

The strafing run of the Godzilla ended and it disappeared once again… But then, a huge and loud shrill echoed through the island. Astrid looked up from the wooden boards that she fell on top of and then, in the small shine of the stars, she could see the outline of the Godzilla soar to the ground somewhere on the far east side of the Island… She hit it… By the Gods… SHE HIT IT!

Astrid could hardly contain her excitement.

"YES! I HIT IT! Thunderclap of Thor I HIT IT!" Astrid said proudly as she got back on her feet. But Astrid could hardly contain her excitement. But Astrid's celebration was cut short. The sound of a Night Fury. It was preparing to attack. And it sounded deathly close. Astrid hair on the back of her neck started to stand high, her legs felt like jelly, and her heart grew implacably heavy and throbbing. Astrid quickly got back on her feet and leapt off the Catapult platform… Just before the Night Fury fired its attack at the Catapult and created an immense explosion.

Astrid gave a scream of surprise as she fell into the water. Smacking into it with a splash. What Astrid didn't notice, however, was that she wasn't the only viking to have shot down a Dragon right then and there.

The blonde Viking quickly swam to the surface, the water wasn't too friendly in terms of cold. The brisk morning air definitely made the water twice as cold. Astrid scrambled onto her canoe and paddled to the shore. Her whole body was covered with cold water, even her hair was a soaked mess. And she was very cold. Her whole body was shivering and shaking, but she managed it. Once she got to the dock, she hopped off the canoe and began tying it down. She was just about to finish up, until she heard something large land right behind her. Causing her to stop what she was doing. She slowly looked behind her to see a red Deadly Nadder staring right at her.

"Uhm… What's your story?" Astrid said, trying to humor herself with the hungry and bloodthirsty dragon before her. The only response she got was a screeching roar in her face. Causing Astrid to fall on her back. She quickly scrambled to her feet and dashed for the safety of her village, or to find a weapon to defend herself. The Deadly Nadder gave chase to its prey and dashed at Astrid with fast speed. Astrid quickly ran up the platforms that would take her up to the top level, while the Nadder gave chase to her, practically tailing her. Astrid was fast, but the Nadder was faster.

Astrid did a sharp turn on the platform by grabbing a wooden post and using it to help her with the turn. The Nadder made the turn and smashed into the rock terrain, but never relented. The Nadder even shot a ray of fire from its mouth at Astrid, causing her to duck out of the way and keep moving. Astrid finally made it to the village level, yet, the Deadly Nadder persisted with its chase. Astrid quickly saw a hatchet resting on the ground. Her survival instincts moved her body for her as she leapt for the hatchet to protect herself. She did a slight roll as the Deadly Nadder went to clamp its jaws at her legs. Luckily, it was short by a few inches and Astrid's roll gave her the edge she needed. The blonde viking teen managed to grab the hatchet. She turned to face the Nadder that didn't stop pursuing her.

The Deadly Nadder's mouth glowed with blue fire, preparing to shoot it at Astrid. At this point, Astrid couldn't use the hatchet to defend herself. And she was pinned against a wall behind her. But then, from behind the Deadly Nadder, a Monstrous Nightmare seemed to fly off, scared of something. The Deadly Nadder didn't seem to care and only had its attention entranced on Astrid.

Just in the nick of time, Stoick the Vast tackled the Deadly Nadder by its face. Astrid's eyes widened in surprise as the fire never made it to her. Stoick, the Chieftain of Berk, narrowly managed to save Astrid from a fiery grave. Stoic grabbed the Nadder by its nose, while having one arm around its head. Forcing it to the ground. The Deadly Nadder then opened its tail up with dozens of razor sharp spikes. Looking as though it was about to strike Stoick in the back. Astrid took the quick initiative to throw the hatchet in her hand at the dragon tail that had dozens of piercing spikes that could kill a man with ease. The hatchet throw was pretty accurate as it struck the tail of the Deadly Nadder. Though it did not cut off the tail, it managed to prevent it from skewering the Chieftain of Berk. Who quickly noticed what the dragon tried to attempt. He quickly lifted its head off the ground and proceeded to kick it in the face. Releasing it from its hold. The Deadly Nadder was sent into a wooden cart, causing it to break and split into pieces.

The red Deadly Nadder was quick to get back up and face Stoick with high aggression. Stoick then popped his neck a little, moving his shoulders up and down.

"Come on then," Stoick said, getting stanced up like he was about to throw hands. Well… you know what I mean.

The red Nadder gave a roar of protest as it opened its wings up. But then it began to notice that multiple vikings were starting to enter the area. Realizing it was outmatched and outnumbered, The Deadly Nadder took off to the sky. Flying back with the rest of its kind. Stoick eased up, seeing the Dragon take flight and leave.

Astrid took a heavy breath of relief. Afterwards, she moved a piece of her soaked hair out of the way. Stoick looked at Astrid briefly.

"You alright?" Stoick said. As soon as Astrid heard that Stoick was talking to her, she straightened up and tried to act professional.

"Yes sir, I'll live," Astrid said.

"ASTRID!" The voice of Mildew was heard off in the distance. Many of the vikings had gathered around, mostly near a certain someone who was chased by a Monstrous Nightmare earlier. And then proceeded to cause an entire torch tower to fall over and free most of the caught dragons that the Vikings had caught. With the crowd distantly surrounding Hiccup, Mildew pushed out from the crowd with his staff, while the other teens followed in suit.

"Astrid Hofferson, ran off to keep out of work did ya?" Mildew said sternly as he approached Astrid.

"No, no, Sir, I… uuuhhh…" Astrid paused for a moment, thinking if anyone would believe her that she actually managed to shoot down the Godzilla.

"I, I, I? What? You did what, little lady? Aside from abandoning your allies to their danger, only to put yourself in a pickle against a Deadly Nadder. Just what exactly were you doing that was so important to abandon your post right after the Godzilla did its runs!?" Mildew said sternly and rhetorically.

"I… I… uhmmm…. I shot down the Godzilla," Astrid said, trying to be straightforward. Upon hearing this, all eyes turned from Hiccup to Astrid. Even Stoick's gaze shifted to hers. Hiccup's too. The teens as well. There was a long silence between them all. Astrid dead panned with her eyes to look at the crowd, feeling a little nervous and slightly embarrassed. The adults then started laughing their heads off. The teens joined in too. The only two who didn't laugh at it were Hiccup and Stoick. Oh and Gobber too. Fishlegs as well, he was more of fake laughing because of the peer pressure. Mildew seemed to laugh the hardest.

"Right, right, And Hiccup over there shot down a Night Fury! HAHAHAHAHAHA… Oh, you youngin's never cease to show your oblivious stupidity these days," Mildew said, laughing so hard. This also seemed to offend the other teens as they all stopped laughing and looked at Mildew if he was actually serious on what he just said.

Astrid felt so small at the moment. Smaller than she had ever felt before in her life. She hadn't been on this side before. The Hiccup side. Astrid hugged herself to try and stay warm from the cool breeze that blew in, the cold water she fell in still lingered on her body and her hair. She then felt a strong arm grab her shoulder.

"All jokes aside, little lady, that's four hundred push-ups a day for the whole week. No breakfast for you, you do those push-ups until you reach four hundred, understand?" Mildew said, speaking sternly in her face. Astrid could feel his breath, the smell of fish. At first she wanted to reel her head away in disgust. But she held herself together and just nodded.

"Yes… Sir…" Astrid said in defeat. Mildew stared sternly at her. Until he smiled, and gently patted her shoulder.

"Good on ya, little lady. Now, best get those push-ups in. You don't want to miss lunch now do ya?" Mildew said as he walked off with his staff. Leaving Astrid to wallow away at her humiliation. As Mildew walked away he kept bantering on about how Astrid would shoot down a Godzilla. A Godzilla of all things!? It would've been more believable if she said a Deadly Nadder, a Gronckle, or a Zippleback for crying out loud. But a Godzilla? Come on now, that's just hilarious.

The other teens then walked up to Astrid.

"Don't let him get to you, Astrid, you know how Mildew is," Fishlegs said, trying to be somewhat encouraging to Astrid and give her the support she needed. Snotlout then wrapped an arm around Astrid's shoulder.

"Hey, if it makes you feel better, babes, I believe you shot down a Godzilla," Snotlout said, putting on his flirting face.

"Whatever dude, You're just saying that to make her feel better or win her over," Tuffnut said smugly. Without much of a thought, Astrid rammed her elbow in Snotlout's nose, causing him to fall flat on his back. Ruffnut and Tuffnut snickered at it, even Fishlegs got a small chuckle out of it.

"Glad I could give you support, Astrid," Snotlout said through the pain on the ground while giving a quivering thumbs up.

Astrid could overhear Stoick and Hiccup talking while the crowd dispersed. It got to the point where Gobber was taking him to the Chieftain's home. Ruffnut then put a hand on Astrid's shoulder.

"Hey, do us a favor, and chop those push-ups out of oblivion. If anyone in this village can do four hundred push-ups in one sitting, it's you," Ruffnut said with encouragement. Her brother then pushed her face to the ground.

"Except for me, watch this!" Tuffnut said as he got on the ground and started doing rapid push-ups. He also counted out loud too. He managed to get to forty… until his face planted on the ground. Groaning in defeat.

"You were saying," Ruffnut said after she had gotten back to her feet.

"Guys, I really actually hit a Godzilla," Astrid said, trying to get them to convince her it wasn't a lie she was making up. The teens then looked at her, some a little unsure of what to say, or they were too scared to say they didn't believe her.

"Astrid, we're your friends, but shooting down a Godzilla is difficult, impossible even," Fishlegs said shyly.

"Yeah, not even my dad or Stoick were able to even get a clean shot at that thing. It's like the embodiment of 'Can't touch this'," Snotlout said, who was standing back up and fixing his hat.

"So… What? You think I'm just making it up?" Astrid said, sounding rather frustrated.

"We're not saying that Astrid, we're-" "Oh we most definitely are, I mean come on, Not even the Greatest Viking in all the land could shoot down a Godzilla. They're like the terrors of the night. OR! Better yet, the Night of Terrors! Of Night Terrors! Of Terrors Night! No, they're all the above of Terrors of the Night!" Tuffnut ranted and interrupted Fishlegs. Tuffnut kept ranting on and on. While Snotlout, Fishlegs, and his sister Ruffnut watched on in anguish at his rantings, Astrid took the time to sneak away.

As Astrid nearly made it to the edge of the village, something caught her by the shoulder.

"And where do you think you're going, little lady? I said, four hundred push-ups. And you're to do this before you start anything else today. Understand?" Mildew said, who seemed to have grabbed her with his cane. Astrid sighed…

"Gods help me," Astrid thought to herself.

To be continued…
