A/N: Please note that we are in the crew of Enterprise D's POV this chapter.
Captain Jean Luc Picard sat in his ready room sipping on some tea. Enterprise had picked up an unknown signal and was moving to investigate. However, something told him that he and the crew were bound to discover something far greater and dangerous.
"Commander Riker to Captain Picard." Came the voice of the ship's first officer. Picard tapped his com-badge. "Go ahead number one." The captain said finishing the tea.
"We've arrived at the location of the signal and well… You might want to see this for yourself." The commander said, uncertainty in his voice.
"Understood number one, I'm on my way." Picard said, curious as to why his first officer sounded uneasy.
William T. Riker, First officer of the Enterprise, eyed the object on the viewing screen wearily. His head snapped to the left as the doors to the captain's ready room opened. "Well, number one?" the captain asked.
Riker glanced back at the screen. "It was a distress beacon…. From a borg cube." He said. Picard's head snapped towards the viewing screen.
There, as Riker had said, was a borg cube, albeit extremely damaged with a good portion of itself missing. "My word." Picard said before looking at his second officer, Lieutenant Commander Data.
"Any life signs Mr. Data?" he asked. In the crew's encounters with the borg, the cybernetic beings could operate even a severely damaged vessel.
"Not that we can detect captain. Increasing scanning power." The Android said before looking up. "None captain, even the alcoves are inactive. I believe we are once again looking at the phenomenon known as a ghost ship.
"Back us off ensign Maxwell and plot course to…" Picard began to speak when a familiar voice spoke up.
"Come now, Jean Luc. Aren't you curious as to how this cube got this way?" it said before the owner appeared.
"Q." Picard drawled out. "Quite frankly I don't care for them after what they did to me." the captain turned back to the ensign.
"Captain, the helm's not responding." The ensign said. Riker looked at Q with an unbelieving look.
"What's so special about it? It's just an ordinary borg cube." He asked making Q to give him a sly smirk.
"it's special because it came from the delta Quadrant and that distress beacon is over 2000 years old." He said catching Picard's attention.
"That derelict cube is over 2000 years old?" he asked whilst Data frowned in thought.
"That would most likely explain the lack of energy signatures from the Alcoves captain, If the damage was that severe any surviving drones would have fought over the remaining active alcoves, or the alcoves were so badly damaged that the drones couldn't recharge." Data said.
"Quite correct Data." Q said. "But your missing something. The question you should be asking is, How'd it get like this? To me, the damage doesn't look like it was made by phasers or torpedoes."
Picard sighed mentally. "Mr. Data scan the hull of the borg cube. Mr. Worf monitor the cube's status. We can't let out guard down even if it is a derelict."
Lieutenant Worf nodded. "Aye captain." Data then began to do a scan of the cube's hull, his eyebrows furrowing as he did.
"The damage seems to have been done by a large object. I've detected trace amounts of lunar dust and debris." The android said finishing his scan.
"Lunar?!" Picard exclaimed shocked before looking at Q, who smirked, seeming to have enjoyed seeing the captain's reaction.
"No reaction from the cube captain." Worf said. "It seems that it truly is inactive."
"Alright Q, you have our attention." Picard said in a defeated tone.
LATER IN THE OFFICER'S READY ROOM
"So, this cube's from the Delta Quadrant and drifted through space for 2000 years?" Enterprise's Chief Engineer, Geordi La Forge, asked.
Picard nodded. "From what Q's told us, yes. However, there's more to it than that." The captain said.
"Correct, Jean Luc. Now the cube was part of a borg incursion of what the Q continuum likes to call the Delta Quadrant's Bermuda Triangle." Q said.
"Bermuda Triangle? I don't…" Worf began to ask. "It's a place on Earth based on superstition, Mr. Worf." Picard said. "According to the Superstition, there's a body of water where Ships and planes mysteriously vanish without a trace. Said section of water is in the shape of a triangle."
"If I recall, one of the most famous disappearances in the triangle happened 421 years ago." Riker said. "Flight 19. A group of Grumman TBF Avengers mysteriously vanished whilst doing a training run."
Worf frowned. "I see. And hope would this Delta Quadrant Triangle hinder the borg?" the Klingon asked.
"It didn't, but it did make them reconsider seeking out that sector." Q said. "That particular cube as well as a few other borg vessels found themselves in a system called remnant when the moon had massive chunks blasted out of it. Said chunks destroyed many vessels even sending one to the planet's surface whilst the one drifting before your ship survived the onslaught.
"So the planet's lost then." Riker said disappointed at the fact the borg assimilated a planet that was out of their reach.
"Well, I wouldn't say that." Q said catching both Picard and Riker's attention.
"What do you mean?" Riker asked giving the omnipotent being a suspicious glare unsure of what Q meant.
"I'm saying that the Borg that survived the crash adapted to their new surroundings, Commander." Q said.
"In their case, that'd be assimilation Q." Picard said sternly before his expression turned to be one of confusion as Q smirked.
"Oh they tried, but some of the locals had other ideas." He said smiling as Worf spoke up.
"I find that hard to believe, even coming from you." The Klingon said frowning as the others agreed.
"Don't believe me?" Q said before snaping his fingers. "See for yourself." Suddenly, the voice of an ensign spoke over the intercom.
"Ensign Maxwell to Captain Picard and Commander Riker." The lieutenant said. The group shared a glance. Was it them or did the lieutenant sound uneasy?
"Go ahead." Riker said. "Well sirs, the Cube's gone, and it's been replaced by a planet and what appears to be a shattered moon."
Picard looked at Q, who was still smirking. "On our way Ensign." He said before they left the ready room.
"This planet. Did it just appear out of thin air?" Riker asked the Ensign whilst placing a foot on the helm's stand.
"No commander, the cube vanished in a flash of light and the planet, as well as the moon appeared in the same way." Maxwell said.
"What is this Q?" Picard demanded of the omnipotent being from his chair. Q smiled.
"I gave you a lift. Jean Luc, Commander Riker, Data. May I present to you, Remnant. The Delta Quadrant's Bermuda Triangle." He said before vanishing.
"Did Q just strand us in the Delta Quadrant?" Riker asked bewildered as to why Q would do something like this.
"Captain, I'm picking up the wreckage of several borg vessels, all of them have the exact same traces of lunar dust on them as the cube we encountered." Data said. "I'm also picking up borg life signs on the planet's surface, but no structures of theirs of any kind."
Riker looked at the captain. "Think Q was telling the truth?" he asked as Picard sighed deeply.
"Only one way to find out." Picard said "Ensign, put us into a stable orbit around Remnant."
3 DAYS LATER
"captain's log star date 76853.8: after Q teleported us to the Delta Quadrant which is home to the Federation's greatest enemy; The Borg, I find myself curious of the planet below us. Despite the borg presence, the planet remains unassimilated.
"An away team?" Riker asked surprised at the captain's decision.
"Yes, If what Q's said is true, then we need to see with our own eyes if the borg present on this planet aren't like the normal Collective." Picard said before Riker nodded.
"The Captain wants to send an away team?" Worf asked as he, Riker, Data, and Geordi proceeded to a transporter room.
Seems like it." Geordi said. "Personally, I'm quite skeptically about these borg after encountering Lore's group."
Data paused for a moment. "I, however, find it quite intriguing as to how the borg of this planet can live in harmony with the local population." The android said.
"What about you Commander?" the chief engineer asked before glancing at the first officer.
"I'd rather not think about it until we see it with our own eyes." Riker said as they entered the Transporter room.
Riker glanced at his friends before addressing the transporter chief. "Energize."
