(Scenes from Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episodes 14 and 15)
CW: reference of death
Reembarking from Mr. Constantine's manor, Miss Tarazi requests me to brew a cup of oolong tea for him. She soon departs with the hot beverage in tow. Captains Lance and Sharpe have simultaneously determined that the sorcerer is now conspiring with Bishop. They and Mr. Green promptly inform Dr. Heywood about this. Mr. Rory reiterates his strong dislike for "that singing, replicative psycho", even though he helped delivering his eggs. The quintet exits the Waverider to confront Mr. Constantine, all failing to consider that he was already on board. He had snuck in undetected when the genetic engineer supposedly escaped from the lab. The sorcerer astral projects himself to deceive his erstwhile teammates inside the manor.
With the Legends out of sight, Bishop proceeds to hot-wire the ship. He holds random tools between his teeth. Though the genetic engineer is fluent in splicing DNA, this particular skill isn't transferable to cross wiring electric circuits. I can ascertain bits of his muffled yammering. Apparently, they intend on unearthing the Fountain of Imperium once again. Their exact destination remains under wraps. For that partial reason, I am conclusive that they aren't returning to 1939 Spain.
Mr. Constantine suddenly rouses, alerting his disingenuous collaborator, "They are onto our ruse." He steps down from the confinement cell. "We need to leave now."
"Almost there," Bishop garbles.
"If you reroute my directory protocols," I warn him, "you'll short-circuit all communications and navig—" His next action shuts me down before I can finish. This is no better than the last time the Waverider was stolen. However, neither he nor the sorcerer know Misses Cruz and Logue are still aboard. I'm certain they'll stop them or find a way to get hold of the other Legends. Either way, those saboteurs must be stopped.
Where do I start after being out of the loop for nearly 36 hours? Bishop and Mr. Constantine brought the Waverider to 1925 Odessa, Texas—our resident survivalist's birthplace. They located the Fountain of Imperium, which is actually an ancient extraterrestrial being in the form of a network of mushrooms. It had secretly protected humanity for eons. Yes, it's all bewildering and there's more.
While the rest of the Legends marooned in present-day Northumberland County, they have managed to contact Kayla. She claimed that she agreed solely for the sake of her and Mr. Rory's eggs. Bishop then connected a bomb he created to said eggs' incubator, poisoned the unwitting sorcerer, and stole the Necrian warrioress's spaceship. As it turned out, his end goals are to ravage the planet with a legion of invading Zagurons and to restart civilization with himself and Captain Lance. Mr. Constantine has succumbed to the poison; what's left of his decomposed body is a small mushroom. It also has critically infected the Fountain and, by extension, Miss Cruz since her telepathic powers originated from it. Oh, and Mr. Tarazi came back from visiting his and Miss Tarazi's parents in 2045 Washington D.C.
The genetic engineer pre-recorded a video message, which plays not before my operating system is rebooted. He's more insufferable than a computer worm. His broadcast has collectively unsettled the Legends across the Waverider. They are scrambling to formulate a battle plan against the egotistical genetic engineer. As for Kayla, the theft of her spacecraft hasn't thwarted her from implementing her own exit strategy. She walks into the bridge, ordering, "Gideon, run a diagnostic."
"All systems functioning," I verify. "And, may I say, nice job on the repairs."
The Necrian warrioress doesn't say "thank you". "Excellent. Then let's get outta here." She leans over the console. "Set a course for the Temporal Zone."
"Jump coordinates plotted."
"Do it."
"Executing…" Less than a minute later, the security system is activated. "Powering down."
"What the—?"
"No, you don't." She turns to see Mr. Rory holding the Waverider's key fob.
"We can't stay here. Do you understand," Kayla interrogates him. "I'm trying to protect our children."
He approaches her, calmly expressing, "I'm not leaving without my kids, but I'm not abandoning my friends or this planet."
She meets him halfway. "You know, I could just snap your head off and take that stupid button of yours."
"Yeah, but you won't." How does he know? "There's a part of you that cares." The Necrian warrioress attempts to stare him down. She relents and goes to check on their eggs.
Since 6% of Bishop is Captain Lance's DNA, Dr. Heywood, Miss Logue, and Captain Sharpe have the idea of her doing everything she would not do. The first was abducting the genetic engineer's younger self from 2212 Vancouver. He's presently concocting an antidote to save the Fountain of Imperium and Miss Cruz. "How long until it's ready," Miss Logue demands. "We're kinda on the clock here."
"It's done," he asserts, holding the serum in a syringe.
The captain runs into the lab. "Guys, I know the answer," she keenly exclaims. "I know the answer to all questions. It's the meaning of life."
The sorceress dully inquires, "You ate the mushroom, didn't you?"
"Yes, and I saw John."
"What?" A faint glimmer reflects in her eyes. She was there when Mr. Constantine died.
"Yeah. He told me what this is about, what everything is about. He said…" She pauses for a full minute. "'We are all connected'." Do all mushrooms have the ability to create hallucinations?
Captain Lance's consciousness-expanding words don't register with Miss Logue, younger Bishop, or Dr. Heywood. "I think I saw that on a bumper sticker once," he states.
"It was really profound in the moment," she murmurs. They disembark to medicate the ailing survivalist in her family home.
Not long after that, I obtain an eagle-eyed view of the stratosphere. A myriad of spherical pods are falling from there. They must be containing the Zagurons Bishop has hailed. I listen in on the Legends' earpieces for informational purposes this time.
"Ugh, there are thousands of these scattered around the area," Captain Sharpe gripes. "I mean, even if we could destroy the pods, there are too much of them. You know, they are too spread out."
"This is a classic Zaguron technique," Mr. Green indicates. "They land, wait in the dark, and then they eat anyone who isn't smart enough to get out of their way. Which is something we should be doing."
Dr. Heywood argues, "No, we're not running. It's 1925. They'll destroy the entire human race before we're ever born. We gotta hold the line."
Miss Cruz is recuperating yet no longer linked to the Fountain. Bishop and Mr. Constantine's actions have turned it against all humanity, depriving them of its help. The alien invasion will therefore prevail with non-existent odds of survival. Unless the Legends can somehow upend the impending plight, Earth is, for lack of a better word, "completely screwed".
"All right," the co-captain resigns, "we have about four hours left of daylight, so we've gotta gear up, hydrate, and prepare for the fight of our lives."
Captain Lance has been notably quiet up to this moment. She asks, "Ava, will you marry me?"
"What? Babe, we already did the proposal."
"No, I mean, will you marry me now? Today, before the apocalypse."
"What are you talking about? We can't just—"
"Why not," Dr. Heywood debates. "We're gonna have to fight those things anyway. We're as ready as we're ever gonna be, and four hours is totally doable."
"Ooh, we can get the whole team on board," the alien consultant induces. "We've produced much crazier miracles in far less time."
Captain Sharpe contradicts, "No, I would rather save the miracles for the actual fight. You guys, we may not survive the night."
"Then let's go out on our own terms," the captain persuades, "do things our way, do what we've always wanted to do. Babe, we've got our friends, our vows, and four hours. What else do we need?"
"I don't know, maybe for the world not to be ending."
"Hey, John told me the most important thing is loving someone and being loved, and if getting married is the last thing that we do together, then I will be just fine with that."
"You have really gone to town with this 'what would Sara Lance never do' thing." What says you, Co-Captain Sharpe? "Um… okay, let's do it! I don't—let's get married."
"Yes, a wedding before the war," Dr. Heywood clamors.
It is all hands on deck for the unpremeditated ceremony. Mr. Green is in charge of selecting the clothes. Mr. Tarazi is overseeing the catering and the music. Miss Tarazi is utilizing her cosmetic skills. She has kept a stiff upper lip since Mr. Constantine's death sunders their relationship. Miss Logue magically conjures up the floral arrangements. I help Dr. Heywood get certified. After their front yard is decorated, Miss Cruz sends her mother away to somewhere safer. Mr. Rory invites Kayla to attend "[his] best friend's wedding". Her "maybe" shifts into an implicit "definitely" when she resolves, after Bishop nearly threatened their livelihoods, their children are overdue for a change in venue.
The alien consultant carries Captain Sharpe's dress to the parlour, where she's having a difficulty in composing her vows. "Here is your gown."
"Thank you, Gary."
He peeks over her shoulder, querying, "What are you writing?"
She startles him when she slams the pen down. "Nothing! I'm writing nothing because every time I write something down, it's stupid and meaningless. And wedding vows are supposed to be perfect."
"You waited until now to write your vows?" The co-captain flashes a quick glare at him. "Sorry. It's just very unlike you." I do admit it is uncharacteristic of her.
"I waited until now because before I was focused on every tiny detail of my dream wedding. Now, we're throwing it all the way and racing into this slapdash ceremony, and I have no time. And I-I-I feel like I'm gonna just screw it all up here."
Mr. Green places the dress on the chair next to the desk. He reassures her, "Hey, hey, hey, deep breaths. Huh? It's gonna be fine."
"How?" She stands up and faces her longtime associate. "Sara already wrote her vows, Gary. Sara, the person who never plans anything, already did the one thing that every wedding needs."
"It's okay. Here's what's going to happen. You are going to walk down that aisle to your one and only. She's gonna say some very beautiful things to you."
"How is this helping?"
"And then you-you're gonna look deep into those gorgeous blue eyes of hers and say what you feel."
"I feel… sick."
"Don't say that."
Captain Sharpe can't believe what he's suggesting. "I don't—You want me to improvise? Me?"
"Yeah, you."
"I can't."
"You can. Because I know what you say in that moment will be perfect because it's true." I notice a placid smile permeating her face. "Because it's you."
Mr. Green's pep talk is exactly what she needed. Their friendship often seems unsteady to me over the years, but I can see they do look out for each other. It has reacquired stability during the past couple months. The co-captain gingerly adjusts his tie. "Gary?"
"Mm-hmm?"
"Will you please walk me down the aisle?" I honestly can't think of anyone better for the job.
Following a transitory silence, he softly replies, "It would be my greatest honor, Director Sharpe."
She clasps both sides of his jaw before possessing her wedding dress. I glimpse at Mr. Green's overjoyed expression as he also leaves to get ready. Everyone else has done the same and headed for Miss Cruz's family home.
A hair-straightened Captain Lance is wearing a white off-the-shoulder jumpsuit with a bow attached to the back, a station necklace, and white heels. She and Mr. Rory have disembarked half an hour earlier. Captain Sharpe puts on her white halter column gown and ivory pumps. Her hair is styled with two joint braids adorned with gypsophila. Donning a crushed velvet suit and a bowtie, Mr. Green escorts her out of the airlock arm-in-arm.
Although I cannot tangibly attend the nuptials, I'm able to hear the procession through one of the Legends' comms. Mr. Tarazi performs a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" on his acoustic guitar. Dr. Heywood is officiating the ceremony. He recounts how the captains first met inside the Time Bureau's field office in 2017 Star City. Captain Sharpe had a gun; Captain Lance had a glare. "We've been through a lot since that day. And on that journey, you've challenged each other to be the best versions of yourselves possible. This moment, this wedding, is exactly what the world needs." It's time for the co-captains to recite their vows.
The latter goes first. "Ava, the perfect woman. What could a mess like me ever have to offer someone as special as you? I can't exactly say it was an instant attraction, but you did look really good in that pantsuit. The more I got to know you, got to feel your kindness and honesty, this heart once so cold and guarded just melted." I detect soft laughter in her trembling voice. "And, Ava, it's because of you that I got to know what genuine affection feels like. And so, today, here, in front of all our friends, I wanna make these vows to you. I will always be your champion, your life partner. I will always be your family. I will listen to you even when the words are hard to hear. I will let you in even when I'm afraid. I will support you, fight for you, and above all, Ava Sharpe, I will cherish you."
"Wow." Her partner clears her throat. "Sara, I... uh…" She soon proclaims, "Sara, my life before you was a perfect fabrication. And then you came into my world, and everything just became a whirlwind. You brought chaos into my tidy, predictable existence and, um…" The co-captain emits an emotional gasp. "…you pretty much brought me to life. So I vow to you to live this life together. Co-captains forever, baby. I'm so lucky to have you by my side, Sara Lance." That's better than anything she could've written.
As the ceremony ensues, Kayla's spacecraft is spotted re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Its flooding exhaust darkens the sky. I second Dr. Heywood. 'You've got to be kidding me'. "What a darling setup you've got here," I hear Bishop trill. "Pre-apocalypse nuptials are all the rage, but you know it's gonna be you and me for all eternity, Sara Lance. Did you bring my younger self along? I really did not see that coming. Well played, but I'm afraid it's for naught 'cause you know what your little party is missing? Wedding crashers. Ta-ta, you crazy kids." My access to their earpieces somehow gets disconnected due to electromagnetic interference. I don't question whether the Legends will emerge victoriously as they have before. Where are those bioluminescent orbs coming from? The next morning, I anticipate their return when another timeship appears in a flash and obliterates the Waverider and, invariably, me.
A/N: Given the situation with the previous chapter disappearing and reappearing, I don't know if you'll be able to read this on first upload. I just pray it'll go through. With that said, end of Phase 4.
