Chapter 8
As Bella drifted into a fitful sleep, the sound of her steady breathing filling the quiet room, Edward sat back against the wall, his eyes never leaving her. The weight of the situation pressed heavily on him—the uncertainty of what would happen next, the threat of Maria, and the dark reality of the world they now found themselves in. But above all, it was the pull he felt toward Bella that gnawed at him. He couldn't explain it—how someone he'd just met could already occupy so much of his thoughts.
Emmett, perched on the edge of the room keeping watch, noticed Edward's gaze lingering on Bella. His posture stiffened, though it wasn't clear if it was out of concern for her safety or something else.
"How do you know her?" Edward asked, his voice quiet but filled with curiosity.
Emmett shifted, looking over at Bella for a moment before meeting Edward's eyes. "I don't," he said simply, though there was a protective edge to his tone. "Not before today. But I feel like I've known her forever. Something about her... she's got this way of caring about everyone, no matter what. I think it's the way she acted today—just jumped in, didn't think twice about the danger."
Edward's gaze softened slightly as he processed Emmett's words. "You're close?"
Emmett nodded, his jaw tight. "I'm gonna protect her, just like I would my sister. She's been through a lot, and I don't care if we've just met—I'm not letting her face this alone."
Edward remained silent, his mind whirling. He didn't know Bella at all, but he knew that the feelings swelling in his chest, the way his heart seemed to race when she was near, were unlike anything he had ever experienced before. Still, he wasn't sure if he could trust those feelings just yet.
"And you? What about you and her?" Emmett's voice broke into his thoughts, a challenge in his tone. "You're looking at her like she's the most important thing in the room. Don't get me wrong, she's amazing. But what's the deal with you?"
Edward's throat tightened, his fingers tapping lightly against the floor. He didn't know how to answer. He didn't have a real explanation—only that Bella felt different. "I don't know," he admitted quietly. "There's something... about her. Something I can't explain. It's like my instincts are telling me she's going to be important in all this. I just... I need to protect her, too."
Emmett studied him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "I get it," he said eventually, his tone surprisingly gentle. "But she's not just some mission. She's one of us now, and I'm not leaving her behind. Understand?"
Edward nodded slowly, acknowledging the unspoken bond between the two. "I understand. She's important. And I won't let anything happen to her."
They fell into a comfortable silence, both men lost in their thoughts as Bella slept soundly. Emmett's protective instincts were clear, and Edward couldn't help but respect that. He just hoped that when the time came, they could both keep her safe—no matter what.
