Chapter One (edited)
Harry ran through the department of mysteries, his eyes darting around, trying to catch sight of anyone not in a silver mask. He came to a room with a large stone archway in the center of it, a transparent veil swaying slightly in a non-existent breeze. Harry could feel his heart beating out of his chest, the blue orb in his hand feeling like it weighed a ton. It took him a moment to realise that the beating he heard wasn't his own heart but the footsteps of someone entering the room.
"Give me the orb Potter."
Harry whipped around to look at the sneering face of Lucius Malfoy. He felt his grip on the orb tighten in defiance.
"Never" Harry growled out, face hardening.
Lucius narrowed his eyes before his attention was quickly stolen by another coming into the room. He watched as the room filled with Hogwarts students and fellow Death Eaters alike, everyone's wands raised. Lucius quickly redirected his attention back to Potter as soon as he knew the other students would be taken care of.
"I am not a patient person Potter, now hand me the prophecy," Malfoy snapped, the brat's insolence getting on his nerves.
Harry looked around, eyes wide in panic as he saw his friends restrained by the Death Eaters. His grip on the orb loosed every so slightly as his arm made a move to extend toward the Malfoy patriarch.
Harry grimaced as he heard the muffled protests of his friends which only strengthened his resolve. Whatever this prophet was worth, he knew it wasn't worth the lives of his friends.
His hand was inches away from Malfoys when a large cacophony of noises sounded outside of the entrance to the chamber. Harry's eyes widened and a small smile graced his lips as he saw the members of the Order of the Phoenix storm into the large chamber.
Quickly, the members of the Order engaged the Death Eaters, trying to ensure the safety of the students first. Harry felt a weight lift off of his shoulders as he saw Sirius barreling towards him in Lucius in the center of the room. Sirius began to hurl spell after spell towards Malfoy.
"Harry, get out of here!" Sirius screamed.
Instead of doing the logical thing, Harry tightened his grip on his wand and began screaming spells at anyone with a glint of silver. Harry jumped in head first, fighting for his life, the prophecy still feeling like lead in his hand.
Turning to see his Godfather, Malfoy disarmed and unconscious, Harry allowed a small smile to grace his face.
"Sirius," he muttered as he made towards the man. However, before Harry was able to hug his godfather, he heard his name being called urgently.
"Harry!" Hermoine cried out. "Ron's been hit!"
Harry quickly turned on his heel and ran towards his friend when he heard Bellatrix shout out an unknown incantation. He whipped around to see his Godfather's smile slowly fading, as he stumbled back into the veil. Harry felt the world go cold as he watched Sirius slowly fade from view, the veil swallowing him whole. For a moment, Harry's world completely stops, unable to process what he just saw.
Lupin looks over to the teenager the moment that his brain processes what he just saw. He knew that he would be able to deal with this later but he didn't have that faith in Harry. His movements quicked by his inner wolf, Lupin makes a lunge towards Harry, quickly grabbing onto him with inhuman strength.
Harry's body began to react to his situation before his brain could even process what was going on. He lunged forward only to be stopped by Lupin. As he stood still, restrained by his former professor's incredible strength, his brain finally caught up to the events going on around him.
Harry let out a blood curdling scream, powered by grief and pain. When he felt as if his vocal cords were about to give out he heard a small chuckle come from the side of the room. He caught one glimpse of a face with a smirk upon it and saw absolute red. He ripped his arms out of Lupin's grasp as he moved towards Bellatrix. He only made it a few steps before doubling over himself.
Harry has to resist the urge to scream again as a pain different than any other he had felt before flooded through his body. The pain left after a few agonizing moments but as he recovered he began to survey his body for injuries. His body felt as though there was never any pain but his mind felt off. He cleared his head not the time Potter he chided himself. He quickly snapped his head up, finding the door that Bellatrix exited through. He felt his legs begin to move towards the door, chasing down his target, carefully avoiding the gazes or glares of the many onlookers. As soon as he exited the room he began to sprint down the hallways that lead towards the lobby, insane laughter from further down fulling his anger and his steps.
He began to catch up, running through hallways with nothing but instinct and magic leading his steps. Soon he arrived in the lobby. Quickly scanning the room, Harry's eyes fell upon the lone figure in the lobby. Suddenly, his wand was in his hand. His eyes were trained on Bellatrix as he raised the wand and hissed out "Crucio."
Harry heard the scream grow louder and louder as his morbid curiosity grew. His magic sang with rightness at the dark curse and his soul agreed. He knew that he should be questioning these feelings but couldn't bring himself to care. This felt right, like coming home.
Harry finally let go of the spell, a small whisper in his mind warning him that others were approaching. He felt slightly out of breath at the large amount of magic he had just expanded but not tired. He knew on a logical level that he should be feeling something like remorse, guilt or shame at his actions, but he couldn't bring himself to feel those things. In fact, he felt a sense of satisfaction tinged with twisted pride at his ability to hold such a strong and difficult curse for so long on his first try. The small smirk that had been forming was quickly dropped as he heard the first person approach him.
"Harry," Dumbledore said, cautiously approaching the boy. His hands were out in front of him, almost how one would approach a wild animal.
Harry was laughing internally about how good it felt to be approached like a danger. His whole life people had walked all over him but now? His thoughts were at war but he wondered silently if this is what respect felt like. If it was, it felt good.
"My boy," Dumbledore tried again, walking closer to Harry. "What have you done"
Harry almost snorted at the disappointed tone that was supposed to make him feel what? Shame, regret, guilty of his actions?
"I believe you have eyes, Professor", Harry said with unusual coldness, the ice in his voice almost shocking himself. He liked the way he sounded, the power in his own voice making him almost giggle with glee. This power, this darkness, he liked it. Harry was so consumed in his own thoughts that he didn't notice the darkening in Dumbledore stature.
Despite his concerned appearance, the care in his eyes, Dumbledore was livid. He could sense the darkness not radiating about the boy, how his magic felt different. He had put much effort into molding Harry's magic to act like that of a Potters and now, to have it all thrown away?
Albus was seething, but he could let anyone know that. So he put on his best grandfatherly expression and moved towards Harry.
The movement towards him was enough to startle Harry out of his thoughts with a violent flinch. He took a step back, only relaxing slightly when he remembered who was with him in the room.
"Harry," Dumbledore said "you're safe now, please, put your wand down."
Try as he might, Harry couldn't hold back his snort of disbelief. Harry lifted his head and truly faced the headmaster turning away from the unconscious form of Bellatrix.
"Safe?" Harry said, his tone mocking. "I've never been safe with you Headmaster"
Dumbledore almost recoiled in shock. The tone, so similar, the words, identical to ones he hear over 50 years ago. No, he thought. There is no way he can know, no one does.
"I've never been safe at Hogwarts, considering I've faced attempted murder every year and currently there is a famed mad-witch on the ground in front of me but I highly doubt she will stay that way for long," Harry said, cocking his head to the side in contemplation.
Albus could have sighed in relief. He didn't know. He could still control this situation.
"Harry, my boy, I believe I can handle Bellatrix if she awakens. You need to come with me and head back to Hogwarts," Dumbledore's voice was almost pleading.
"And leave my friend with a group of death eaters?"
"I'm sure the order is plenty competent to handle them"
Harry leveled Dumbledore with a glare before heading back into the direction of the Department of Mysteries before he felt a tingle come from his scar. Whipping around he watched as Voldemort stepped through the floo.
Dumbledore's attention was immediately diverted to the tall snake-like man.
"You shouldn't have come here tonight Tom."
The Dark Lord sneered slightly, Dumbledore's very presence offending him. He took a few steps towards the now much more subdued Harry and the Headmaster, his attention flickering between the two.
He took a deep breath in, the amount of dark magic in the room comforting his being. However, shock took over as he realized exactly who the dark magic was radiating from.
"Harry Potter," Voldemort said, parseltongue giving his voice a slight hiss. "Do you realize the power you hold?"
Harry was surprised at the lack of … edge to the Dark Lord's words. He sounded more like a teacher who had just discovered a prodigy and less like a Dark Lord who's most devout follower had just been tortured to the brink of insanity, no matter that said brink was her constant state of being.
Taking slightly too long to respond, after all what does someone say to a comment like that Dumbledore felt it prudent to fill the silence.
"Tom, you know you will not be leaving here tonight," confidence practically dripped off of the old man.
His only response was a small smirk before there were spells flying at an incredible rate from Voldemort. Harry felt himself be pushed back to safety but couldn't figure out who sent the spell his way. He watched on in awe as he saw two of the most powerful wizards of modern day battle it out, with little perceived reservation.
After what felt like an hour, but was in reality only a few minutes, it looked as though there was a stalemate in the battle. Harry slowly peeked out from the column he was pushed behind to see that Dumbledore had a face of rage so similar to Vernon that it made him flinch. He quickly hid back behind the column before clutching his scar in unimaginable pain.
Dumbledore heard a scream of agony and swiftly moved to the column that it came behind. After making sure his rage was tempered, he looked at Harry who was laying on the ground, curled in on himself, a hand strongly pressed against the scar. He sighed slightly before kneeling down to the boy.
"Harry," Albus said, his voice projecting concern. "Harry, can you hear me?"
Suddenly, Harry's eyes snapped open, the bright green bearing a startling resemblance to the killing curse.
"Albusss" Harry hissed. No, not Harry, Tom. "I know what you've done, you horrible man. You call me a Dark Lord yet my actions pale in comparison to yours."
Albus watched on as Harry was panting, either from pain or from effort Albus couldn't tell. Panic filling his insides, how did he know? Albus felt like he had been doused in ice water as he watched Harry go limp. Standing up he watched as Voldemort re-appeared …. Right in front of the newly full ministry atrium.
Eyes still burning with rage, a small smirk graced the Dark Lord's face before disappearing with a small crack.
An oppressive silence completely took over the hall before two small words were spoken.
"He's back."
