Moving Day
The day had come that I would be moving out of my adoptive parents' house and in with my biological dad and his family. It took a full week to get all of my things together… but I had help. Besides, it wasn't like it was goodbye forever. My dad said that my adoptive parents could still visit.
We were all outside my soon-to-be-former home. "Well, baby… I guess this is it." My mom hugged me tight. "We're gonna miss you so much." She let go.
"Don't worry, Mom. Daddy said you can still visit. It's not like I'll be out of your lives."
She hugged me again. "Oh, I know. It's just gonna be so different without you around here." She let go again.
"I'll be fine, Mom. I'll be taken care of."
My adoptive dad spoke up. "We know you will, sweetie. We know you'll have a good time there too."
They both hugged me. "We love you and we'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too. Don't worry. I'll be in good hands." I turned around and went down the five steps. Then, I opened the passenger door of the moving truck and got in. My dad was already in the driver's seat.
"Okay. Are we all ready to go?" I nodded to him, and he started the truck. I looked out the passenger's window and smiled. As my dad put the truck into gear and started driving away, my adoptive parents waved goodbye, and I waved back. It was truly the beginning of a new chapter for me.
"So, Daddy. You told me a little about the family members I'm gonna be meeting. They sound like they're great."
"Oh, they are. You'll love them."
"That's great. I can't wait."
About five minutes later, I looked out the window as we were pulling up to a very large house… or mansion, to be precise. I put my hands against the glass. "Woah!" I looked around in awe. "You live here?" I looked over at him.
"Yep. And now, you do too."
I looked out the window again. "This place is huge!"
"Yeah, well… get used to it. It's your place now too." He unbuckled and got out.
I smiled and unbuckled too. I got out and took a look around again. "Wow. Just… wow." He headed for the front entrance, and I followed.
We both walked up to the door and stopped. "Are you ready?"
I nodded. "Yes."
"Perfect." He opened the door and we both went inside. Four people were sitting on the couch—a woman, a teenage girl, and three teenage boys—and they were watching TV. They all looked our way.
The woman stood up and made her way over to us. "Donald, hi."
"Kids, I have a surprise for you." My dad put his hands on my shoulders. "This is my daughter, Emily. She'll be living with us from now on."
The four teens stood up and walked over to us too. The girl introduced herself first. She shook my hand. "I'm Bree… and these three bozos are my brothers, Adam, Chase, and Leo." She pointed to each of the boys.
"Well, nice to meet you. My dad told me I'd be meeting some great people… and he wasn't lying."
The tallest one, Adam, said, "Well, if you think that's great, wait until you see our–"
My dad cut him off. "Okaaayyy! Enough with the introductions. Uh, Emily. Why don't you go upstairs and check out where your room's gonna be? It's gonna be the sixth door on your left."
I nodded. "Okay, Daddy."
"Leo, why don't you go with her? Make sure she doesn't get lost."
"Okay, Big D." Leo went upstairs, and I followed him.
When upstairs, he showed me the different rooms. As we were passing each door, he told me what room it was. "You got my mom and Big D's room." That was the first door. "This is a closet. It's where we store various items. It's a walk-in." That was the second door." The third one was Leo's room. "This is my room." Apparently, the two rooms next to his were extra rooms. "And finally…" He stopped at the second to last room. "Big D said this will be your room." He opened the door, and we went in. I looked around. It was a semi-large room. The walls were painted pink and there was a wood panel floor. There were three large windows that were separated by black paneling straight ahead. They went about five inches above the floor. The ceiling was white, as well as the floor molding. "Wow. This is gonna be my room? Cool."
Leo said, "I guess so." I turned to him and rolled my eyes. "Well, now that I showed you where some rooms are, we can go back downstairs."
I raised an eyebrow. "Some?"
"Oh yeah. Big D's got a lot of rooms."
"What's with the whole Big D thing?"
"It's what I call your dad ever since he and my mom were dating… and that's beside the point." I rolled my eyes again. "Come on. Let's go downstairs." He started walking down the hall. I closed my door and then followed him.
When we got back downstairs, everyone was sitting on the couch except my dad and his wife. He was standing and she was sitting on the arm. He clapped his hands together once. "So, baby girl, do you like your room?"
I nodded. "Yes, I do, Daddy. Thank you."
"I know it doesn't look like much now… but once we start filling it with your all your stuff, it'll look way better."
I smiled, went over to him, and hugged him. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome." He kissed the top of my head. After a few seconds, I let go. "I'm glad that I get to live with such nice people."
My dad hugged me again. "We're glad too, baby girl."
Adam shot up and said, "A group hug! Woo! Bring it in!" I shook my head in amusement and smiled. He walked over and hugged us. The others followed and hugged us too.
Yeah, I know I'm gonna love it here.
