A new girl in town Chapter 83
"Really Kayla?" Cena said. "This is supposed to be a party. He's a real buzz kill."
"He stays or I go. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here." Kayla said.
"Are you sure about this?" Cena asked.
"Yes." Kayla replied.
"Fine but I'm not responsible for any trouble." Cena said.
"There won't be any. That's the last thing anyone needs," Kayla said emphatically.
Cena stepped aside to allow them to enter. The crowd inside went silent as Hunter stepped through the door.
Great Hunter thought now we can really party.
Jeeze, something has got to give here. Kayla thought as people started leaving. A few of them weren't keeping their unhappiness at DX crashing the party any secret; a few of them glared at Hunter as they passed.
"got anything good to drink around here?" she asked.
"And music. C'mon, people. We know what partying looks like, right?" she added.
"Bar is setup in my room Kayla." RVD said pointing to the connecting door.
A moment later the music started back up and Kayla saw Jon at the stereo.
Kayla made a beeline for RVD's room.
"Want anything?" she asked.
"Scotch neat." Hunter said.
"No problem," Kayla said. It took less time than she hoped to make Hunter's drink and hers. Before she knew it, she was back.
"Bottom's up," she said, handing Hunter his drink and downing hers in one.
"If you are going to drink like that maybe we should go stand next to the bar." Hunter said with a half-smile.
"Hey, good idea," Kayla said with a wink.
Hunter shook his head and followed her to the bar.
I need to keep an eye on her she just got out of the hospital. Hunter thought.
Just then the door opened, and three very well-dressed men stepped in all of them looking like they could take out this entire room.
Shit Kayla's in trouble now. Hunter thought.
"There's no trouble guys she's in here." Hunter said pointing before the guys could start tearing the room apart.
"Oh shit," Kayla said, looking shocked.
"Hey hey, what's going on." Cena said standing up near the door.
"Everything's fine, guys. Really. I just went for drinks. We're all clear," she said.
"We know. We were called in as backup. There are too many people here for one of us to control the situation." One of them said.
Kayla nodded.
"They're part of my 24-hour security detail," Kayla explained quickly to Cena.
"'Taker's doing. But they're meant to be invisible unless needed; might as well try to get used to them, right? Let's not let this ruin the night... Please?" she added looking hopefully at Cena.
"Invisible they are not." Cena said. "But what the hell." Cena turned the music back up a bit louder than it was before.
Several of the wrestlers began to dance some better than others.
"Hey this is my jam right now," Kayla said as she heard the music.
"dance with me?" Kayla asked, looking over at Hunter.
What the hell am I doing? Kayla asked herself as if someone else had just spoken the words.
"Kayla that isn't going to happen. This noise is not my kind of music." Hunter said.
No way in hell am I dancing to this stuff. Not on my life. Hunter thought. It's too fast.
"Oh, c'mon. I love metal too but there's a lot more worth listening to," Kayla said, starting to move to the music unconsciously.
"I'm not dancing Kayla. Nothing you can say will make me dance to this." Hunter said smiling as he watched her move.
Damn she looks good moving like that. Hunter thought. Stop it Hunter it's not like that.
"Guess I'll just dance by myself then," Kayla said as the song changed."
"Unless you want me to ask John... but that would be like dancing with my brother," she said, continuing to move to the music.
"You go right ahead and ask Jon." Hunter said with a huge grin. "Because I am not going to dance with you."
Kayla sighed.
"Fine. What would you like to do then?" she asked.
"This is not my usual scene. I'm usually in my room with the crew, in a gym or out at a bar." Hunter said. "We weren't invited to many parties."
"Bars are one dimensional, the gym is the gym and your room sounds boring. So, we're going to have fun tonight even if it kills me," Kayla said.
Hunter watched her continue to sway to the music even though he wasn't moving at all.
"Hunter." Al said approaching the two of them. "Head wanted me to tell you Head loves your dance moves." Then he walked away talking to head.
Kayla buried her face in her hands as she tried to stop laughing. It failed.
Hunter bowed his head and shook it then his shoulders started shaking and then he snorted trying to hold in his laughter.
Kayla lost it, laughing so hard she almost fell over.
"Why are you laughing. Don't you think I have great dance moves?" Hunter deadpanned.
"I wouldn't know," Kayla said, whipping her eyes.
"And you never will." Hunter said smiling. Hunter threw his arm over her shoulder. "I thought we were heading to the bar."
"Huh? Oh yeah, before the four towers showed up," Kayla said, unconsciously moving closer to him." Same drink as last time? Or are you gonna change it up?" she asked teasingly.
"That's my drink." Hunter said.
Hunter took a seat at the table where the liquor was setup and Kayla took on beside him.
He poured himself another scotch and watched her pour herself another jack and coke. After a few drinks she switched to straight jack.
Hunter sipped slowly.
It wouldn't do to get intoxicated around these guys. He thought. I've made too many enemies among them.
Sitting there he began to hear the whispers. Mostly about how Kayla had been kidnapped and found. Speculation about his involvement and how he had found her. Did his finding her mean he had been the one who kidnapped her, or would he have been smart enough to have someone else find her if he had been her kidnapper. Then there was wild speculation on why they were hanging out together now.
I hope she's not hearing what I'm hearing it's bound to upset her. Hunter thought.
"Jesus, I wish they'd shut the fuck up," Kayla said as the whispers continued.
"Is that all people do around here? Make shit up and specu-um-that word. Whatever," Kayla said as she started downing yet another drink. How many was she on? Fuck it; she didn't care. At least she'd probably - hopefully - pass out and wouldn't be able to hear the whispers anymore.
"If they are upsetting you lets just go." Hunter said. "You don't need to stay here and listen to it."
"If you're coming too," Kayla said, reflexively reaching for his hand.
"I'm not staying if you're leaving. You are the only reason I'm here." Hunter smiled.
"My room then?" Kayla asked, struggling to her feet and nearly falling over.
Hunter reached out and took her arm. "Let me give you a hand before you face plant Kayla." Hunter said trying not to laugh.
"FUck. Guess I drank too much. Thanks," Kayla said.
Then a lightbulb flickered dimly.
"Wait... Why aren't you. You drank as much as me..."
"I'm bigger than you are." Hunter said.
And I didn't drink nearly as much as you think. Hunter thought.
"You're bigger than everyone," Kayla said, feeling his muscles under her fingers as he helped her.
"Not everyone." He chuckled. "Just most people."
Herding her toward the door Hunter made sure to stop so she could say goodbye to Cena before they left.
Looking over her shoulder, she saw five security guards following them.
"We're just going back to my room. We only need one of you. So... Uh... Yeah..." Kayla said, looking blearily around her.
Stepping out of the room Hunter started laughing.
"You do realize what you just did don't you? You just announced to half the fed that you are taking me back to your room. You know what they are going to think right?" He said still laughing.
"Uh. Oh... But it's not... We're... not... fuck," Kayla said.
Wish we were though. Kayla thought, hoping she wasn't saying it out loud.
"YOU know that, and I know that and well your security will know that but well by this time tomorrow the whole fed will believe we are sleeping together." Hunter said. "Nothing you can do save going back into that party and staying there all night will change that."
"Is this gonna mess... Um. You know. Fuck, what am I saying?" Kayla asked, trying to put words to the thoughts she was having.
"You mean this is gonna be a mess?" He says.
"Is this gonna mess things up for you?" she asked at the same time.
"What do you mean mess things up for me?" Hunter asked. "I'm not the one with a good reputation to protect. I'm a bad boy remember."
"Good? Me? You don't even know," Kayla said with a laugh. "People were gonna talk anyway. Whatever," she added.
"I meant with, y'know, you and Chyna," she said.
"Chyna, she may think otherwise but that has been over for a while." Hunter said.
"OH. So, you're okay with this?" Kayla asked.
"With what?" Hunter asked.
I don't even know what this is are we friends? Are we more? What exactly is this?
"People thinking we're... You know... Sleeping together," Kayla said.
"Figured I wasn't your type," she added.
"If you know anything about me you know I don't let other people's opinions dictate what I do. I decide who and what I do and who I spend time with." Hunter said.
"Same for me," Kayla said smiling.
"And I like hanging out with you, so fuck them," she added.
"My opinion exactly." Hunter said smiling.
Then she started rifling through her pockets looking for her room key.
She finally found it and let them both in.
"I'll just leave you here then. Maybe if I go back to my room the rumors won't be too bad." Hunter said.
Maybe I can save her rep at least a little. He thought.
"Hey... Can you stay? Please?" Kayla asked.
"I just... I don't really want to be by myself right now. I can make coffee or something," she added, heading over to the kitchen area and starting to make a pot.
"Umm… ok I guess." Hunter said stepping in.
I thought she would want me to go. Hunter thought.
He took a seat at the table and tried not to fidget.
"I think I got it right," Kayla said, setting a cup in front of him and reaching to make her own.
"Got what right? You remember how I take my coffee?" He said sounding shocked.
The only person who has ever remembered how I take my coffee is Maria. Hunter thought.
"Shit, sorry; maybe I should have let you make it? Is it okay?" Kayla asked.
"No, it's good really." He said taking a sip.
I'm babbling. Kayla thought. What is wrong with me? It's just coffee. Right?
Hunter sat sipping his coffee.
Why does she remember when even DX doesn't remember? I must send Jessie for coffee all the time and he never gets it right.
"Wanna watch a movie or something?" Kayla asked after a while of companionable silence.
"Sure, as long as it's not some sappy love story." Hunter said with a laugh.
Kayla shook her head.
"Nah, I don't usually do those," she said.
"How about trying to find a Bond movie or something?" she said.
"Sounds good." Hunter said, picking up the pot of coffee he headed into the other room to sit on the couch.
Kayla joined him and picked up the remote for the TV. She started scrolling through the listings, trying to gauge his interest.
Getting no reaction, she finally gave up and chose something she hadn't seen in a while.
"Wow," He said. "I haven't seen this since boarding school."
"Huh?" Kayla said. Boarding school?"
Fuck I didn't mean to say that out loud. Hunter thought.
"Yeah." He replied hoping she wouldn't ask anything more.
Kayla looked at him carefully. Something about his tone and the look on his face told her that asking any further questions would probably not be a good idea, so she left it alone, instead commenting on the movie to try and break the mood.
After a while Hunter put his arm around Kayla and she leaned back against it.
"You look tired. I can go if you want to go to bed." Hunter said.
"It's okay," Kayla said.
"I haven't been sleeping that well anyway. Nightmares. Haven't been this bad since after Iraq," she admitted.
"Oh," Hunter said not knowing what else to say.
What the hell do I say to that. I can't say it'll be ok cause I don't know that it will. He thought.
Hunter turned his attention back to the movie. After a little while he realized he hadn't felt Kayla move in a bit. Looking over he realized she was asleep laying back against the couch trapping his arm behind her.
Oh shit. He thought. How the hell am I going to get my arm back without waking her. Maybe she'll wake up in a few minutes and I can leave then.
Hunter waited patiently watching the movie to the end but still Kayla hadn't moved.
She's sleeping so peacefully. I hate to wake her especially since she said she's been having nightmares. She can't sit there all night I'll just wait a while longer.
Kane/J.J.
Maybe if I follow the hum, I can find the light. J.J. thought. I'm tired of the darkness.
Kane sat there whispering. Begging her to return to him to come back.
"Baby I can't live without you. You have to come back to me. I'm nothing without you." He said.
Just then he felt her fingers move.
"Did you move baby. Or did I imagine it.?" Kane asked. "Do it again squeeze my hand baby. Can you hear me."
He felt a slight movement again.
"Please oh please wake for me baby." He said a little louder.
Its louder now easier to follow. J.J. thought.
J.J. fought the darkness struggling to find the light.
"Doctor, Nurse. She's waking she's waking." Kane called out.
"Shh sir. It's probably involuntary movements." The nurse said as she entered the curtained area.
"No, it's not she's waking I know it." He said.
"If she is, we'll know soon enough." The nurse said.
Little by little the movements became more pronounced and even the nurse admitted she might be waking and stayed close.
Kane talked constantly encouraging her to wake to come back to him telling her how much he loved her and needed her.
Finally, her eyes flickered open.
"There you are baby." Kane said joyfully.
J.J. jerked her hand free of his and said fearfully pulling away from him. "Who are you?" she asked hoarsely.
Kane stepped back in shock.
"I'm your husband." Kane said.
