A new girl in town Chapter 84

Kane/J.J./Sammy

"I don't have a husband." J.J. said hoarsely.

Just then the nurse walked in.

"Oh, you are awake." She said.

"I don't know him." J.J. said pointing to Kane. "Make him leave."

"Why don't you step out for a bit." The nurse told Kane.

"I will not I've been waiting for her to wake up. She's, my wife." Kane said.

"I'm not married." J.J. said adamantly.

"Really you should step out for a few minutes." The nurse said.

"Kane, why don't you come with me." Sammy said having heard the commotion.

"But." Kane started.

"She may just be a little confused. Give her a minute." Sammy said.

Kane sighed heavily and followed Sammy out.

"How can she not know me? I don't understand?" Kane said half angry half confused.

"Amnesia can be strange." Sammy said. "She had a head injury remember. It can mess with the memory in weird ways."

"So, she'll remember soon." Kane asked.

"Maybe." Sammy said.

Kane began to pace, and Sammy could feel the temperature go up.

Kayla/Hunter/Taker

A pounding on the door woke Kayla and Hunter with a start.

Where the hell am I? Hunter wondered. The pounding starting him from a sound sleep.

"What the hell?" she said. Then she felt the press of another body next to her... was she laying on them? As she tried to orient herself through the haze of a hangover, the pounding continued.

"Make it stop," she groaned.

Oh, shit I'm at Kayla's we must have fallen asleep on the couch. But who the hell is pounding on the door?

Getting up Hunter went to the door.

"Taker why are you pounding on Kayla's door?" Hunter asked opening the door.

"You I'll deal with later. Where is Kayla?" Taker asked.

"Right here. What's going on?" Kayla said, appearing behind Hunter.

"Sammy called. J.J. woke up. But she doesn't remember Kane." Taker said.

Oh fuck. Hunter thought. This is just getting worse and worse. First, she gets hurt because I was being a jerk now, she doesn't remember him. This couldn't have gone any worse.

"What? Oh, god..." Kayla said, looking stricken. She looked helplessly at Hunter.

"What's... They can do something, right? Treatment: there has to be something," Kayla said desperately.

"It's amnesia Kayla there is no treatment. Just wait and see what comes back." Taker said. "I don't know how far back it goes there hasn't been time to determine that yet. But it's far enough back that she doesn't know she's married."

"I'm so sorry. This is a fucking mess and it's my fault," Kayla said, feeling unwanted tears starting to prick behind her eyes. She lowered her head and fought to regain control. Crying right now wasn't going to help things.

"How exactly is it your fault?" Taker asked. "There is someone else in this room who holds much more blame."

"I'll accept that." Hunter said. "Though the extent was not my intent. I take some of the blame."

"But blame is not the issue." Taker said. "Getting J.J. back here and well is the plan."

"Absolutely. Whatever can be done to help make that happen... I'll help in any way I can," Kayla said.

It's my fault because I thought it was just a game. Kayla thought. But she knew that saying it out loud, especially with 'Taker in the mood he was currently in, would only exacerbate an already volatile situation.

I was warned not to push Hunter. That someone could get hurt. She remembered as she fought to remain present through a tumult of racing thoughts and tangled emotions.

"I'll help if I can too." Hunter said.

"You had best keep your distance from Kane if you know what's good for you." Taker said to Hunter. "He's going to be very pissed at you for this whole situation."

"I can understand that." Hunter said.

Taker turned and walked off.

"What did he mean he'd deal with me later?" Hunter asked.

"I have no idea," Kayla said.

"I'd offer you coffee, but I guess you need to get back?" Kayla asked.

"Yeah, it's late." Hunter said.

"Okay. Thanks for an... interesting night. The fun parts..." Kayla said.

"Guess I'll see you later."

"Ok, yeah." He said turning to go.

He headed back down to the DX suite and went inside.

"Where have you been?" Chyna asked.

"Kayla's" He answered without thinking before heading back to his bedroom.

Kayla's huh. I thought we had a thing now he's spending time with Kayla. I think I'll take a look at MS Kayla I'm sure there are a few things I can use against her. Chyna thought.

Calling probably wouldn't be a good idea this late. I better text Kane. She thought, quickly writing a message and sending it.

Kayla: Hey, it's Kayla. New number. Taker told me what happened. I'm so sorry, dude. Thinking of you, guys. Call or message if you need anything.

Then instead of bothering with the bed she curled up on the couch. It smells like Hunter. She thought, feeling strangely comforted by it.

Thinking can wait. She thought as her eyes closed.

Kane/Kayla

Oh, Kayla has a new number. Kane thought looking at the message that came in.

Kayla it's a mess what am I going to do. She doesn't know me at all. She seems scared of me. J.J. was never scared of me not ever.

Kane

Kayla felt her phone going off just as she started drift off.

It's probably Kane. She thought.

Reading his text broke her heart.

Kayla:

It's going to be okay. The memories are still there. She just can't remember. You can jog her memory. Remind her of what you guys have.

Kane

I don't know. I hope so. I can't live without her.

Kayla:

You won't. She's still here. You fell in love once. You will find that again... Help her find it... Dude, I'm falling asleep. Call me later?

How can I help her fall in love with me when I have no idea why she fell in with me in the first place? I didn't do anything. I even tried to push her away and the harder I pushed the more she got into my heart. I never deserved her love. Never expected it. So how can I help it happen again? Kane wondered.

Sammy/J.J.

"I don't know you either." J.J. said.

"I know you don't." Sammy said. "But I've known you for about a year."

"You seem to have some retrograde amnesia." The doctor said. "What is the last thing you remember?"

"I remember working for the L.A. Police department as a forensic photographer." J.J. said.

"I remember you saying you had some photos in an art gallery. Do you remember that?" Sammy said.

"How do you know about that?" J.J. asked.

"You told me. It's how Vince recruited you." Sammy said. "He bought your pictures and bugged you until you decided to come work for the fed."

"I remember the pictures being bought but not who bought them." J.J. said.

"I don't blame you for blocking Vince out. I would if I could." Sammy laughed.

"What fed?" J.J. asked.

"World Wrestling Federation." Sammy said.

"Wrestling. Seriously I work for a Wrestling Federation. I find that hard to believe." J.J. said.

"You have for about three years." Sammy said. "It's where you met Kane, the guy that was in here."

"He's scary as fuck." J.J. said.

"He only looks scary cause of the mask he is tough as nails for everyone else but for you he's a marshmallow." Sammy said.

"I highly doubt that." J.J. said.

"He loves you more than life itself." Sammy said. "He hasn't left your side unless I forced him to since you got here."

"I don't want him anywhere near me." J.J. said.

"Ok." Sammy said. "If that's the way you feel. But he's going to have one hell of a broken heart."

"Why don't you let her rest." The doctor said.

"Ok," Sammy said.

Kane/Sammy

"Can I see her now?" Kane asked as Sammy came out of ICU.

"No." Sammy said. "I'm sorry she doesn't want to see you Kane."

"Why, how can I fix this if I can't see her." Sammy said.

"Kane you can't fix this. She has amnesia. She will hopefully get her memories back, but it will take time and effort." Sammy said. "We can't make her see you if seeing you upsets her."

Kane closed his eyes and took several deep breaths.

I will not freak out. He thought. This will work out is has to I can't lose her I just can't.

Kane/Kayla

A ringing phone was the next thing Kayla was aware of. Fumbling for it, she hurried to answer seeing it was Kane.

"Hey. You, okay?" Kayla said.

"No, she doesn't remember me and won't see me." Kane said.

"Shit. I'm so sorry," Kayla said.

"What am I going to do? I can't go back to living without her. I just can't." Kane said.

"When's the last time you got out of the hospital? I mean really got out for longer than a change of clothes or something? Can you do that for me? It's understandable that she won't see you right now; she just woke up and she's probably overwhelmed. Can you give her that time?" Kayla said, trying to say anything that could help while also trying to think through the fog of sleep.

"I can't remember." Kane said.

"And listen, you're not gonna lose her. She just needs time to get her bearings. To process, you know. She's not going anywhere, I promise. You won't have to live without her."

"Go back to the hotel, okay? I get that you might not sleep but rest if you can. In an actual bed. Or... When's the last time you went to the gym? Do that, too; it'll help. Have something to eat. I'm sure Sami will call if there's any change, okay? Please, Kane," she said, hoping that she could get through to him and knowing that staying at the hospital wouldn't do him any good.

"I'll try." Kane said. "I don't know about sleeping but I guess I could use a workout to get my mind off things."

"Good. Exactly. That's what will help right now. Do whatever will get your mind off of this. Promise?" Kayla said.

"Yeah." Kane said.

Kane texted Sammy who what back in with J.J. and then headed out.

Kane

Walking into the gym Kane looked around.

It's been a while. He thought wondering where to begin. At least I've got it to myself.

He began with legs then moved to arms.

Maybe a bit of time on the heavy bag I'm still wired.

He pulled on his gloves and smiled.

J.J. got these for me after I turned my hands to hamburger that one time. So, I wouldn't do it again. He thought. Then he began to work the bag.

His mind swirled with thoughts of J.J. and fears that he had lost her for good because of Hunter's fucking games.

I'm going to kill that man when I get back. Kane thought.

Kayla

After Kane hung up, Kayla dragged herself into the shower hoping that the hot water would wake her up. She dressed quickly, then went in search of some food and coffee she didn't have to make herself.

It's gonna be a multi-pot day. She thought as she took a seat in the restaurant.

Cena sat down beside her.

"Ok I gotta know what is up with you and Hunter?" Cena asked bluntly.

"Wait, where did you come from?" Kayla asked, looking startled as Jon appeared at her table.

Cena sat down.

"I... What? Jesus, some warning next time, Jon," she said, trying to buy herself some time.

can I explain what's going on to anyone when I don't even know myself? She thought.

A few weeks ago, we couldn't stand each other; now, we're crashing on the same couch... I'm basically flirting with him shamelessly like someone I don't recognize... And he's being... Human. But everyone thinks we're sleeping together now and we're not. She thought, feeling utterly overwhelmed and at a loss for words to communicate all of this to Jon, one of the only people she could likely talk to right now.

"Well?" Cena said. "What is it?"

"I don't know I... A few weeks ago, I thought he hated me. Now, I'm falling asleep on the couch with him and... and... everything that you saw last night and he's being... kinda... nice? I don't know! But we didn't sleep together. I mean we're not... You know... I don't know what's going on!" Kayla said in a rush.

"Ok, so it's kinda he saved you now things are all fucked up kinda thing." Cena said.

"100% yes," Kayla said, relieved that he seemed to understand.

"He was like a different person with me, Jon. When he found me but also at the hospital."?

"Ok, I get it. Just watch out for him, ok?" Cena said.
