It was fate, it had to be. How else could the arrival of Detective Randy 'Ryo' Maclean be explained? The two-seven hadn't even had an opening for a new detective until the most senior guy on the squad had been offered the captaincy of another precinct, whose captain had been forced into early retirement for health reasons.

Even then, the position at the two-seven should have gone to the next detective on the list, but he'd been inconveniently tied up with an undercover assignment, and the next guy was on bereavement leave, and so the opening had gone to Ryo.

Better yet, because Dee happened to be in the Chief's office when the new kid arrived, the Chief had decided to put them together as partners.

Yep, it couldn't be anything other than fate, destiny, a helping hand from up above, because now Dee got to spend every workday with the man of his dreams, the answer to all his prayers.

Okay, so he hadn't managed to win Ryo's heart yet, but he was working on that; it was still early days, and as Mother always said, good things come to those who wait. One day, Ryo would be his.
