Chapter 18
"I've got some bad news William," Charlie said to him. They were both in the interrogation room again, though this time it wasn't the friendly chat it had been before.
"What? What is going on?" William asked, seemingly confused.
"We found your DNA on the envelope that was sent to Danny Bauman. Inside that envelope were pictures of him being abused by your uncle. What I can't figure out is why send these photos to him and then make him think that his therapist had them? You see Danny is talking and he's confused. He doesn't know anything about the envelope. Now, he's a little muddled so maybe he's playing us. At the same time, he said he received word his therapist had the pictures. Now his therapist is dead and three officers of SJPD are in the hospital. Luckily, they'll all live, but now I have to wonder just what you've been playing at?" Charlie gave him a look. "Nicely played," Sarah said into his ear. The truth of the matter was, Danny was still incapacitated. They still couldn't talk to him but William didn't know that. It was one thing that hopefully would push William for the truth.
"I don't understand," the younger man shook his head.
"You're in this up to your eyeballs," Charlie told him. There was a knock on the door and the detective went up to get it while Rex gave William the hairy eyeball – or at least as close to one as he could.
"Ah Constable Gadhavi, good to see you up and about and out of the hospital," Charlie smiled at the constable. The two stayed in the doorway of the room and spoke loud enough for William to hear.
"I heard you have him in there," Gadhavi said.
"I have one of them in here," Charlie admitted.
"I want to see him," she said, playing her part well.
"I can't let you do that. You know that," he told her.
"They're benching me. They think I have PTSD," truth of the matter was she probably had some side effects from being shot, but they were trying to see if William could feel any guilt or remorse at all. Charlie wondered if Joe would appreciate the theatrics. Especially since the constable hadn't been cleared physically yet and wouldn't be for weeks.
"You have to let the process work. I won't let you lose your job," Charlie promised.
"You promise?" She gave him a look.
"Yes, I promise," he said giving her a wink and quietly mouthing 'thank you'. With that Constable Gadhavi nodded with a slight smile on her face and left.
"Sorry for that intrusion, where were we?" Charlie asked.
"Who was that?" William suddenly seemed to have lost his composure.
"That was one of the officers that was shot by Danny Bauman. She got lucky. Just some broken ribs and nasty bruising but I'm worried that seeing the Head of Forensics getting shot right in front of her did some damage. She's a good cop and now her job and her life are in a big upheaval. You can help with that. Why was your DNA on that envelope?" Charlie wanted to know.
William's head went from upright to practically putting his forehead on the table. "You've got him," Sarah said through the earpiece and she couldn't help but smile. Charlie wished he could give her a wink at that moment or a knowing look. Rex's behavior made the detective wonder. The amazing dog had made his way to William and put his head on his leg.
"I had no idea what was in the envelope. Lynn asked me to take it to the post office because it was too heavy for just one stamp. I got there and I realized that she didn't seal it so I licked the dumb thing," William picked his head up, but only to look at and pet Rex.
"What did she say was in it?" Charlie asked.
"Lawyer paperwork. Why would she lie?" The younger man wanted to know, finally lifting his eyes to the detective.
"Because she was in on what Richard was doing," Charlie shook his head.
"Why would Richard do that?" His cousin seemed confused. The kid had no idea what had been going on and had actually been set up by his wish to help Lynn.
"What is wrong with Lynn? Why does she wear long sleeves?" Charlie pressed.
"I'm not sure. Like I said, we're not close. I chalked up her almost dead on her feet appearance to the fact that her dad was gone and, since her mom died a while ago, that cleaning out the house and cleaning up any leftover messes was overwhelming. I know it was for me and my brother and sister," William admitted.
"Why contact you? Why not your brother, Robert?" The detective wanted to know.
"Robert doesn't live here anymore. He's in Halifax," William told him. Charlie nodded. It was about ease of access for the Moffat children, not a particular target.
"I need your help to bring Richard down," the detective said.
"What can I do? Danny was a good kid. I had no idea…" William shook his head.
"How'd you know Danny?" Charlie asked.
"While I stayed away from my uncle, Robert played hockey. His team would play the team Richard was on. Danny would hang out with Robert sometimes or join us at the mall when we hung out in a group," William explained.
"Ok, I need you to give me Robert's number and I need you to come with me," Charlie told him.
