Chapter 30
"So, this guy goes back to his folks' place. He hoping Lynn is there?" Anna asked. She pulled down the street so that her car and Mika's car weren't too close to one another. They did not want to give Richard the idea that he'd been followed from work. Their position meant that they'd be needing Jesse and Mika to give them updates.
"Honestly, if he hasn't noticed that she's been gone, he's got more problems than we thought," Charlie shook his head. The RCMP officer's phone chirped.
"They picked up Fischel and are questioning him right now, just with regards to Moffat and records altering. Nothing on Debra Moffat's disappearance," she smirked.
"That'll make him nervous," Charlie chuckled. Rex was looking out the car's rear window; his eyes glued on the front door of the Moffat home, waiting for Richard to come out. The highly trained German Shepard didn't like the man.
"We've got movement in the house," Jesse's voice came over the radio. It was the intention of the team to have Jesse and Mika bring Richard in for questioning while Charlie, Rex, and Anna looked around the property. They didn't have enough for a second warrant but if Rex could sniff something out, then maybe they'd be able to apply for one.
"Is he coming out?" Charlie asked him.
"I think he's losing it. He left the curtains open and he's flinging things around," Jesse admitted.
"I think you and Mika should go and ring the doorbell. He won't be able to clean up and you might catch him in another lie," the senior detective said. He didn't get an answer but he could see that the two detectives had exited Mika's car and headed for the front door. Mika rang the doorbell. Richard didn't respond right away so she pounded on the front door.
"SJPD! Richard Moffat, open up!"
"I like her, for the record," Anna spoke up, watching in the rearview mirror on the windshield.
"She's a tough cop. You have to be in that job but she's really good with victims too," Charlie smirked as he watched Richard finally open the front door.
"What do you want?" He asked the two detectives.
"We need you to come down to the station for some questions," Mika told him.
"Again?" Richard gave her a look.
"Well, there have been some developments and we need your side of the story. Right now, we only have your sister's side," Mika was being all polite with him, despite wanting to arrest him and throw him in a cell.
"What did you do with Lynn?" Richard wanted to know.
"She's been committed to the mental health facility. Mental Health Services agreed with our concerns that she needed to be assisted through this difficult time," Mika told him. Charlie wasn't sure if the well-trained detective knew what was about to happen or if she let it happen on purpose but Richard lashed out and punched Mika right in the face. Knowing his partner was faster and not wanting to blow their cover, Charlie opened the back passenger door window. Rex shot out of the window like a bullet and went running down the street, barking his head off. That snapped Jesse out of it and he tried to restrain the man. He didn't have to worry though as Rex charged up from behind and sent Richard backwards into the house. By then Mika had recovered from her shock and quickly cuffed the perpetrator.
"Well now you're under arrest for assaulting an officer," she told him. Jesse helped her haul Richard up off the floor and out to Mika's car while Rex sat on the front stoop.
"We'll get that warrant now," Charlie said before quickly calling Joe to tell him what happened.
