Chapter 39
Rosa was infested with one of the most evil Grimm, the Revenant Grimm. It is a Grimm that feeds on and amplifies negative emotions, leading the one infested to dark places. After Rosa's semblance evolved, she was haunted by figures of her past… and almost made a terrible mistake.
Ruby walked through the halls of Atlas. They had just defended Mantle again in another skirmish. The Sith didn't let them forget they were near. Rosa didn't fight. Ruby tried to hand her back her lightsabers but Rosa couldn't take them. It was a frustrating time as they were rushing… and Ruby said something she regretted to Rosa. She told Rosa to get over herself because people were dying.
Ruby was walking to Rosa, who was still locked in her room. Ruby should have known better than to say what she did. She saw the pain in Rosa's eyes. She was still too scared to be around her weapons. And Ruby understood why. The Revenant Grimm was terrifying once they learned about it. She had so quickly gone from herself to almost killing herself.
Ruby knocked at the door. There was no answer. Ruby opened the door, and she saw Rosa just sitting on her bed. Ruby called out to her, but Rosa didn't reply.
Rosa sat in the corner of her dorm room; her knees drawn up to her chest. She tried to breathe, but every exhale felt heavier than the last. The silence around her was suffocating, and it wasn't the comforting kind. She wanted to scream, to disappear, but she couldn't. She had no place to run to anymore. Not from herself.
Her thoughts swirled in a whirlpool of guilt and shame. She'd handed her lightsabers over to Ruby, but that wasn't enough. She felt so lost. So broken. She couldn't even trust herself to have them without the dark thoughts reminding her why she handed them over.
She turned her head and finally saw Ruby there. Guilt overcame her for her cowardice today. She felt so vulnerable. She felt like she could break at any moment. Maybe if those thoughts all came from the Revenant Grimm she could feel better about herself right now, but those emotions were buried deep inside of her. She thought those things about herself. That was why it was so effective.
"Rosa, I'm sorry for what I said. I wasn't thinking about you. I should have realized it would take more time." Ruby said.
Rosa heard the words, but couldn't understand why Ruby was apologizing to her? She was the weak one who couldn't touch a weapon because she was so afraid. Ruby looked into Rosa's eyes and must have seen something there.
"Rosa. Look at me." Ruby said. Rosa did so. "You are not a coward." Ruby said.
But she couldn't fight. People died. Did they die because of her? Rosa wanted to stop Ruby, but she found Ruby holding her.
"I shouldn't have pushed you." Ruby said.
Ruby didn't push.
Torchwick walked back from his latest reporting meeting with Ironwood. The man had these meetings once a week. He felt the leash around his neck, but that wasn't too bad. Fixer had been scanning everything the drones saw and found something of interest.
There was maybe one of the Sith camps. It was in the right direction. But they never knew for sure until they attacked. That was the problem with the underground bases. You never knew when it was going to be time to attack.
Fixer was checking the scan to see if it was real. Ghost was already putting odds on it whether it being real or not. Nisha had no idea where they were supposed to be. She left right before they moved everyone.
"Either way, Ironwood's going to want to check this out." Kyra said.
"How's the proposal to get the other half of the team going?" Brick asked.
"He gave me some bullshit about if we want more people, we have to go check through the catalogue again. I only got one of you from the people he recommended. If we play ball and take one more, maybe we can recruit a few others. What else do we need?" Torchwick asked.
"We need someone to get us all the illegal weapons." Brick said.
"I can only get you guys so much since… well you know." Fixer said.
"We need someone who could make illusions." Kyra said.
"Keep going. I like that." Torchwick said.
"Someone with assassination skills." Nisha said.
"A really good gambler." Ghost said.
"Let's try for a bartender while we're at it. We need some drinks here." Brick said.
Wolke was able to get one message out to Salem before his capture. The bug had been planted. Salem was able to use the connection they once had to bring an aspect of herself through the Revenant Grimm. She was so close to getting the maiden power back, but those damn silver eyes stopped her again.
Memores entered the throne room. He had a smile on his face.
"Lady Salem, we have just finished testing the first prototypes of the Tri-Wing series. The Grimm followed the orders of the pilot perfectly." Memores said. "We've begun working on other ships as well."
"That is good news. Make sure that you get pilots to fly them." Salem said.
"Of course. Are you going to see your pet toy today?" Memores asked.
"No. I've decided that he won't see anyone for a while. I want to see what the isolation will do to him. Perhaps that will be enough to break him." Salem said.
"I wonder if he can break. If he hadn't after you killed that guard, then he is made of stern stuff. Too bad he's a filthy Jedi." Memores said.
"The Jedi captured Wolke. Unfortunately, Umbra is still alive. But she almost did it." Salem said.
"The Revenant may not have driven her to killing herself, but I doubt she isn't still feeling all the negative emotions. She's unbalanced. If she's out on the battlefield, she will be easy to capture." Memores said.
"But she wasn't. That was the problem." Salem said.
"But that means the maiden wasn't fighting our forces." Memores said.
"Yes, more survived, but we need her powers." Salem said.
Kaiser woke up first. He was holding onto Valum. They had one shared apartment now, both closer to Salem. He had a dream where he and Valum were going to fight Rosa soon. They were going to get their revenge on her. He enjoyed that one very much. He needed to wake Valum up. Even if he really didn't want to. He liked the warmth he felt holding her. He was still sure some of this was Salem's influence… but he didn't mind. Neither did she for that matter.
Kaiser leaned forward and planted a kiss on Valum's neck. She was always a heavier sleeper, so he often had to wake her up. After a few more kisses, Valum turned around to look Kaiser in the face. She kissed him back.
"What are we doing today?" Valum asked.
"More digging. At this point I think we can start to get speeders through." Kaiser said. Valum rolled her eyes.
"How much longer are we going to have to wait until we can bring everything down on them?" Valum asked.
"It is complicated you know." Kaiser said.
"Yes, I do." Valum said.
Kaiser was getting ready for the day when he decided to tell Valum about the dream. She listened carefully while drinking her coffee. Kaiser could tell that she liked the dream. She smirked when he described how they beat Rosa, how they didn't stop after taking her lightsabers away.
"…And we killed her. You gained the maiden powers and took a seat on the dark council." Kaiser finished telling Valum.
"That's the type of dream I wish I had. But I just get some bullshit dream with no meaning." Valum said. Valum finished her coffee. Kaiser smirked at that. Then a thought came to him.
"Do you think it was more than a dream? Perhaps the force was telling me that we're going to kill her soon." Kaiser said.
"Gods I hope so." Valum said. He loved the way she said it. It was almost sultry. He loved it when he could hear something like that coming from her.
"Why don't we have someone sneak in and assassinate her? She's one of the major threats to our plans." Kaiser asked out loud. Valum looked at him.
"She is in the heart of Atlas, heavily guarded." Valum said. Her voice was back to normal. Back to business.
"We got Lilith to sneak in there." Kaiser said.
"To kill a random Sith. We both know that Lilith isn't a powerhouse who can take on a maiden, and almost ten other knights, and anyone else who decides to fight her." Valum said. Lilith and Valum were the two greatest spies the Sith had at the current moment, but she had a point.
"Could you sneak in there, using your semblance, and kill her?" Kaiser asked.
"Probably not." Valum said. "Yang was able to see through it, remember."
"That Bitch." Kaiser said. Even hearing her name soured his mood. The others would taunt them first before fighting. But with Yang, it was on sight.
"Why do you hate Yang so much?" Valum asked.
"She's a fucking bitch." Kaiser said. He brought his hand up to his eye and felt the scar.
"Wait… did she really make fun of your scar? That's fucked up." Valum said.
"She knew I got when I was still a slave." Kaiser said.
"What the fuck?" Valum said. Kaiser could feel Valum's anger on his behalf. "She's a bitch."
Weiss was sinking into the warm water in the spa. She leaned her head back and let out a satisfied sigh. She had taken out more Sith troops, and a Sith. She was always sore after battle. It came from the way she fought, and how fast she had to be. Pyrrha and Nora came out and joined her.
"Did you notice Rosa wasn't in the fight today?" Nora asked.
"What do you mean she wasn't?" Weiss asked.
"I asked around. She wasn't fighting. Is she sick? Or… is she still closing herself off?" Nora said. Nora looked at Weiss and Pyrrha.
"It's going to take a lot for her to recover from what she almost did." Pyrrha said.
"I… I thought Ruby went to give Rosa her weapons back before we left. I haven't seen either of them since the battle ended." Weiss said.
"That may not have been the right move for Ruby. Rosa doesn't trust herself right now. She needs time to realize she's not a threat to everyone around her." Pyrrha said.
"But the Sith won't just wait. We need her in the battlefield." Nora said.
"Nora…" Weiss said.
"She's not a danger. She'd never hurt herself without that Revenant Grimm. None of us see her as a burden. I hate that she's thinking that about herself." Nora said.
"I do to. But she can't control how she feels about things like that right now. I… I understand what it takes to come back from that." Pyrrha said. Nora and Weiss looked at Pyrrha. They had forgotten that only a few months ago Pyrrha herself was struggling with very similar thoughts.
"I hate seeing her go through this and not be able to do anything." Nora said.
"We are doing something. We're there for her." Pyrrha said.
Qrow and the Ace Ops just finished clearing out another Sith hideout. Qrow leaned against a wall. They had others with them. Troops, Jedi, Huntsmen. People died. People were hurt. Qrow was just tired.
"We're getting the computers now." Vine said.
"When we get back I need a drink." Qrow said. They followed the lead the Black Ops gave them. Qrow just needed a long break. His bones were tired.
"Are you okay?" Clover asked Qrow.
"I just… I'm tired." Qrow said.
"We all are." Clover said.
"I've been fighting this war against the Sith for most of my life. I think I get to complain sometimes." Qrow said.
"Of course you do. But are you sure you should always be drinking to release whatever this is?" Clover asked.
"I didn't ask for a lecture, or your opinion." Qrow said.
"Just a thought." Clover said.
"We got a list. An updated list of the Sith Council." Vine said.
"Good. Send that back to Atlas." Clover said. He turned back to Qrow.
"Looks like today's our lucky day." Clover said.
Rosa was in the cafeteria getting dinner. There were people talking about the fight today, the one she stayed back from because she was scared. A coward. No one here besides her friends would have known if she was in the battle or not. But she knew. And it ate her up completely.
Ruby told her she was sorry for trying to push her into the fight, but Ruby shouldn't be apologizing. She was at fault. She couldn't even touch her lightsaber.
She got her food and sat down at a random table. She was trying to feel normal again. But she knew she was failing. She just wanted to go back to her room and crawl into bed. At least there it was safe. At least there she didn't have to worry everybody.
She looked up and saw Quinlan Vos. Her cheeks blushed and she just wanted to bury her head in the table. He hadn't seen her. She was going to have to face him eventually. She cried in front of him. She acted like a child in front of him. Gods, what damn bug ruined everything.
She didn't have the connection to Quinlan to bury her head in his chest. But he helped her. She wasn't supposed to be weak. She was supposed to be a former Sith Lady, on the light side, and one of four maidens. But she still broke down in front of him.
"Am I ever going to feel normal again?" Rosa asked herself.
"You were never normal to begin with." Jaune said. He sat down next to her.
"Thanks, Jaune." Rosa sarcastically said before taking another bite of her dinner.
"How are you doing?" Jaune asked. He stressed 'are.' Rosa looked at him. She looked down and saw his lightsaber there and shook her head. She still was afraid to be near one.
"I get it." Jaune said.
"Jaune… can I tell you something?" Rosa asked. She was about to tell him about what Maku made her learn… but he couldn't.
"Of course. What is it?" Jaune said.
"Do you know… I think you are my first real male friend." Rosa said. Jaune didn't say anything. He just looked at Rosa.
"The places Maku took me… I didn't have the greatest impression of men." Rosa said.
"Why weren't you afraid of me?" Jaune asked.
"You weren't a gangster type for one." Rosa said.
"Pyrrha says I have an honest face." Jaune said.
"You also didn't try to hit on me." Rosa said. Jaune laughed at that one.
"I was a mess. I think we should both be grateful." Jaune said.
"Yeah. I'm just trying to say… I know I don't say this enough, but… thanks. For being there for me." Rosa said.
"Where's this coming from?" Jaune asked.
"I've been doing a lot of thinking since… then. I almost died thinking no one wanted me around, and you all proved me wrong. I don't know why it took me getting so close to the edge to start acting like a good friend…" Rosa was about to spiral.
"You are a good friend. You need to stop telling yourself that you aren't." Jaune said. "How much of this guilt have you been carrying alone?"
Rosa stopped looking at Jaune. Another bite. She was trying to ignore the feeling in her chest.
"We'll always be here. We trust you, Rosa. With everything. Please, learn to trust yourself." Jaune said.
Rosa swallowed and looked at Jaune.
"How?" Rosa asked.
"Rosa… a very wise person once told me that there is no shame in needing professional help. I need it." Jaune said. Rosa turned away from Jaune. The softness in his voice punched through the doubt that had been infesting her thoughts.
Maku had always told her that she needed to be strong on her own. That she shouldn't rely on others to help her. That she should give everything she had to others. Why had that lesson stuck in so deep in her?
"You're a strong person. But no one can be strong forever. And no one who's been through what you have can stay strong for long." Jaune said.
"…I'm scared." Rosa admitted. Jaune put a hand on her shoulder.
"I know." Jaune said.
Oscar was with Yang. They were going around the city looking for any damages that needed to be reported and any crimes they could prevent.
"I know we're supposed to be on patrol, but do we really have to? The Sith already attacked today." Yang said.
"Patrol? That's what we're on? I just thought I was here to see you window shopping." Oscar said.
"Don't pretend that you have been looking for places to take my sister this entire time." Yang said.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Oscar said.
"Yeah, you weren't memorizing exactly where Lava Java Bakery was." Yang said.
"It was a café actually." Oscar corrected. Yang smirked. "Fine."
"You know, you're her first kiss." Yang said.
"What are you talking about? We haven't kissed." Oscar said. Yang stopped.
"What? Really?" Yang said.
"What made you think we kissed?" Oscar asked.
"I just… you guys have been going out for some time now…" Yang said.
"So?" Oscar asked.
"You two are so innocent." Yang said.
"Yang, we've both killed people." Oscar said.
"Yeah, but that's war. We're talking about romance right now." Yang said.
"Fine, if you're so interested in my romantic life, what about you? I don't see you going out with anyone." Oscar said.
"What?" Yang really didn't like the tables being turned on her.
"I see you don't like the attention." Oscar said.
"Hey, what are you trying to say? I could get anyone I want." Yang said. She had a blush on her face.
"Yeah, probably. You are famous." Oscar said. He had a smirk on his face.
"Don't make fun of me. I might be your sister-in-law one day." Yang said. She still had a blush on her face, but she was trying to take control back.
"You think so?" Oscar asked. "You can see it going that far?"
"Um… yeah, probably." Yang said.
"Well, I'll take that as a vote of confidence in my upstanding character." Oscar said.
"Shut up." Yang said.
They were silent for a while.
"I'm worried about Rosa." Oscar said. Yang looked down at him.
"We all are." Yang said.
"I see her every night. She's lost something. She's trying so hard not to spiral all the time. I how she blames herself for what happened." Oscar said. They walked along the sidewalk just listening to the sounds of the city. Yang didn't know how to help Rosa.
She knew how to deal with a lot of physical things. She even knew how to cheer people up. But this… Rosa feels completely broken. Yang ran fingers through her hair.
"That Grimm really fucked everything up." Yang said.
"She had a lot of those feelings buried deep. I can't explain how it feels right, but it kind of feels like… a geyser. And those emotions have burst through to the top. And those bubbles cook you if you get caught in them. And Rosa's getting hit by them all." Oscar said.
Darth Requiem and Darth Nihil were at the site of one of the tunnels.
"So this is what you've been spending all your time on. Gotta say, I thought it would have been a bit bigger Siggy." Nihil said.
"It's growing." Requiem said. Nihil stepped into the tunnel. Requiem followed her. They were just going to check out the entrance.
"But I am impressed by this. Too bad it's just taken a few skirmishes to get this much done." Nihil said.
"We can't go too far into the tunnel yet. We've been trying to figure out how to add air holes large enough to move troops through, but concealed enough so the enemy won't spot them." Requiem said.
"You got this." Nihil said.
"It's good to have your vote of confidence." Requiem said.
"Of course you have it, Siggy. You should know that. But that douche doesn't." Nihil said.
"Kaiser I'm assuming." Requiem said.
"Exactly. I don't trust his plans." Nihil said.
"I have to work with him." Requiem said.
"I know. But he's a dick." Nihil said.
"These tunnels will allow us to break the back of the Alliance." Requiem said.
"I don't know. They have a really annoying habit of surviving." Nihil said.
"Certain Jedi have that habit. But the alliance is more than just them." Requiem said.
"I hear Kaiser has a hate boner for half of them personally. Doubt he's actually going to get to do anything though." Nihil said.
"Don't let him hear you say that." Requiem said.
"So, how many more skirmishes are we going to have to do before these are ready?" Nihil asked.
"A few. Might need a big battle too." Requiem said.
"Those new ships, right? Testing out our new tech. You know, I wonder how we still haven't found out where he shield generators are. I mean, we know they have a few, but we still haven't found one? What do we pay those spies for?" Nihil said.
"We pay the spies?" Requiem asked.
"Probably not. But we got people in there and they've been caught. How hard is it to find where all the energy is going?" Nihil asked.
"There are anywhere from three to seven shields around Atlas. We have to find all those energy spikes, in a city that's all about energy." Requiem said.
"Yeah. But still, we should have already at least found out where they were." Nihil said. "It would be like me being around you and still not knowing which buttons to push."
"Why do you do that?" Requiem asked.
"Because you know how to make me not bored." Nihil said.
"Can't you figure out how to entertain yourself without me?" Requiem asked.
"But I love when you do what I want." Nihil said.
Rosa followed Jaune's advice. He was waiting outside for her to get out of her session with a therapist. She didn't say much.
"How are you doing?" Jaune asked.
"I don't know." Rosa said.
"I get that." Jaune said. "But… it is a good thing you took Ironwood up on his offer. There aren't many who specialize in the types of things we deal with."
"I don't know what I should feel. I don't know if this is going to help." Rosa said.
"Trust me… it will. Even if it takes time." Jaune said.
"There's a voice I hear telling me I'm wasting my time. That I'm dragging everyone down. It feels like what Umbra would tell me." Rosa said.
"Have you faced Umbra, really faced her? The months you spent as her are still probably extremely traumatic." Jaune said.
"…I hate to think of myself as a victim." Rosa said as they were walking the halls. "Feeling like I can't control any part of me. Feeling… suffocated by my mistakes. I thought I handled this when I came back."
"Rosa… the stuff you dealt with doesn't just go away." Jaune said.
"I know that! I know and I'm mad, scared, and sick of not feeling normal. And I know that the Revenant Grimm made me think things, but I gave it all the material it needed. I'm not ok." Rosa said tears forming with those last words, and angrily she wiped them away.
"You don't have to be ok." Jaune said.
"When will I feel okay again? When do I have to stop worrying that I'm going to fuck up so bad that everyone is going to die and it's going to be my fault? When can I go to sleep without worrying that I'm going to see Maku again, or that another memory is going to pop up and I learn that there was another fucked up part of my life that was stolen from me? When will I stop feeling like vomiting whenever I even think of holding my lightsabers? Why do I feel two seconds from imploding all the time? When will this stop?" Rosa asked. She felt the weight on her soul. She took a few deep breaths trying to calm herself down. But it didn't work.
"Do you believe me when I tell you I know what most of that feels like?" Jaune asked, in a quiet, kind voice. Rosa had slid down to the floor. She looked at Jaune.
"Jaune?" Rosa asked.
"I'm no therapist… but I do understand some of that. I wonder if… You also have depression. I don't know if you do. But if you do, this is the best thing you can do to help yourself. You don't… exactly feel normal again. Not entirely. Sometimes it feels like you just wait to have another bad day. But I've been having a lot of good days. You will too." Jaune said.
"I hate this." Rosa said.
"Yeah. It's hard to understand." Jaune said.
"Does this really help?" Rosa asked.
"It does." Jaune said.
Sun woke up in his cell, alone once more. He had no idea the last time he saw a person that he was pretty sure wasn't a hallucination. He was sure that everyone he was seeing was a hallucination because they were all dead. He saw Elira with her washcloth cleaning him and smiling. He didn't see any change to his body.
"Elira…" Sun said.
She just smiled at him and gave him a quick kiss. But she was dead, so she didn't really kiss him… he was pretty sure.
Neptune was working on his weapon when he turned to wave at Sun. He saw Neptune's mouth move, but he didn't hear anything come out.
"Neptune."
Neptune gave him a wave before putting TRI HARD on his back. Neptune vanished. Sage was there, listening to music. Sun had seen Sage start dancing as he got into the music. Sun let out a small laugh which caused Sage to look up. He got embarrassed.
"Sage."
Sage vanished.
Scarlet appeared next. He was carefully crafting one of his dust grenades at the table. Scarlet carefully put the two halves of the grenade together and smirked. He lifted the goggles he was wearing.
He looked up at Sun and gave him a thumbs up.
"Scarlet."
Scarlet vanished.
Sun was alone again.
Blake sat on the balcony at the dorms. She looked out at the city and just sighed.
"I wish you were here, Sun." Blake said.
Blake knew there was nothing for them to do but wait. But she felt useless. She thought about what Tasha told them about Sun, and that woman, Elira.
Sun was used by that woman. Sun was hurt by that woman. Sun loved that woman. Sun had sex with that woman. Blake didn't know why that last one bothered her so much, but it did. She didn't know how she felt about Sun. She didn't know if she saw him in that sense, but she did see him as a very close friend. She tried not to think about what that woman did to him. She was dead now.
She didn't know what to do with Tasha telling her that Sun said he loved her. That was a surprise that she hadn't expected. She never saw Sun in that light before. She saw him as her dork best friend. She struggled with the idea Sun liked her like that. She didn't see any of it. She just thought that they were really good friends. She had no idea if she had any romantic feelings for him. She had no idea if she had romantic feelings for anyone. She just never looked.
She hated that she couldn't save him like he saved everyone back in Mistral. It pissed her off. It pissed her off that she was so concerned with her own feelings wondering he she had feelings when he was out there suffering.
She leaned back. She looked into the night sky. She remembered that soon there would be a meteor shower. It would happen in three days. Maybe that would help her get her thoughts off Sun.
What would she have done if he did confess to her? What would have been her reaction? Would she have started going out with him? She had no idea.
"I wonder… how many of those stars have planets with them, and life with them?" Blake asked.
Rosa had been avoiding Quinlan, and it wasn't right. She found him as he was ending his work for the day and as he was about to return to his family.
"Master Vos…" Rosa said. Quinlan turned around to see Rosa. It was the first time they talked since Rosa broke down.
"Rosa, what is it?" Quinlan asked. Rosa couldn't look him in the eyes, and she tried not to get too embarrassed.
"About the other night… I just want to apologize…" Rosa started. Quinlan put his hand up.
"Stop. There's nothing for you to apologize for. Not a damn thing." Quinlan said.
"I should have…" Rosa started.
"Rosa. You survived things no one should have to. You were a kid. You still are, in a lot of ways. You don't have to pretend to be fine all the time. You need a release sometimes." Quinlan said.
"I don't pretend… all the time." Rosa said.
"You need to rely on the others. Really rely on them. Not just fight beside them. Not just joke around with them. You need to tell them. About what you survived." Quinlan said.
He said that word again. Survived. Rosa knew he meant to say that word. The weight of it started to settle in her chest.
"I don't…" Rosa started.
"Yes, you do. Because you're not alone, kid. But if you keep it all locked up in your head, if you never let them see the weight you're carrying, then they can't help." Quinlan said.
Rosa bit the inside of her cheek.
"I'm not saying it's easy. And I'm not saying you have to tell them everything all at once. But start. Let them in." Quinlan said.
"I'll… think about it." Rosa said.
"That's all I ask. It will help you to talk about it… and I think you know that already. I heard you're going to therapy. That's an amazing first step. You are stronger than you feel right now." Quinlan said.
"Thank you." Rosa said. She left. Quinlan gave her a reassuring smile, but he dropped it after she left.
"Damn you Maku."
Jaune went back to his dorm with Pyrrha. He opened the door, and Pyrrha turned to him.
"I was wondering where you were." Pyrrha said.
"I'm sorry. Did I forget to tell you?" Jaune asked.
"Yes. Where'd you go?" Pyrrha asked.
"I took Rosa to therapy." Jaune said. Pyrrha looked at Jaune. He said it so casually. Pyrrha got up and wrapped her arms around Jaune.
"Wow! What's going on?" Jaune asked.
"Thank you." Pyrrha said. Pyrrha let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. A deep, relieved exhale that made her shoulders sag.
"Why are you thanking me?" Jaune asked. Pyrrha moved back to look directly in his eyes.
"Jaune, do you have any idea how much she needed this?" Pyrrha asked.
"Yeah, I do. But it still feels… strange. Like, I don't know if I really did anything. All I did was push her to go." Jaune said. Pyrrha loved him, but sometimes his lack of ego was infuriating.
"Jaune, I know Rosa. If anyone else had pushed, she would've resisted. But you? You got through to her. Only you could've done that." Pyrrha said.
"Only because I had you to push me. I don't know where I would be without your help." Jaune said.
"Jaune…" Pyrrha said, still wrapping her arms around him.
"Back in Beacon, I wouldn't have even thought about therapy. I thought I just had to deal with things on my own. But you… You gave me the strength to take that first step. You showed me I didn't have to do it alone." Jaune said. He leaned in and kissed her.
"You are an amazing man, Jaune." Pyrrha said after they broke off from the kiss.
Rosa stood in Ruby's doorway. She needed to tell Ruby about the update. That she was getting help. Ruby was lying on her bed when she saw Rosa.
"Rosa, what is it?" Ruby asked, getting off her bed and standing in a second.
"I just… thought you should know that… I went to therapy today." Rosa said. Ruby smiled and put a hand on Rosa's shoulder.
"And how do you feel?" Ruby asked.
"Confused, mostly. Like, how am I supposed to unravel everything that's happened to me, and the things I've done? Like, am I even worthy enough to be here, with everyone?" Rosa said.
"I think you already know what I would say." Ruby said.
"I know." Rosa said.
"Do you think… you're ready for your weapons back? Or do you still need me to hold onto them?" Ruby asked.
"Please… hold onto them for a bit longer. At least… until I stop panicking thinking about holding them." Rosa said.
"I understand." Ruby said. She pulled Rosa into a quick hug. "And when you're ready, they'll be here."
Ironwood had Oscar back in his office.
"I have the question. I hope this one will suffice." Ironwood said.
"Go on." Oscar said.
"Show us how to defeat Salem once and for all and her connection to the Sith Emperor Vitate." Ironwood said.
"It should work without her trying to mess things up. She might say that it is two questions, or not a question. But she has been in there long enough, she probably wants to get out for a bit." Oscar said.
"So that's a go?" Ironwood asked.
"Might as well, right?" Oscar said.
"Is that you, or Ozpin saying that?" Ironwood asked.
"Ozpin's worrying because of her nature. But he thinks it's a good enough plan." Oscar said.
"Then… we can do it." Ironwood said.
"Aren't you going to wait for everyone to be present?" Oscar asked. Ironwood looked at Oscar and nodded his head.
"You're right. We'll wait till the others return." Ironwood said.
Oscar left Ironwood's office.
"No commentary this time?" Oscar said.
"What is there to say?" Ozpin asked.
"You seem to always have something to say. Go on, say how we could have handled that better or whatever you were going to say." Oscar said.
"I wasn't going to say anything. I think you handled that well." Ozpin said.
Oscar just continued to walk.
Blake and Ruby were drinking tea while playing Pazaak. Ruby enjoyed the game. Blake was good at it as well. They were playing 'republic senate' rules, meaning no chance of losing or gaining money. Safe.
"Did you hear about the meteor shower happening this week?" Blake said.
"What day?" Ruby asked. She picked up another card. She was at nine now.
"Friday." Blake said.
"Oscar's Birthday?" Ruby asked.
"It's going to be Oscar's birthday? Why didn't he say anything?" Blake asked. She was at twelve.
"Probably because he forgot. He may be my boyfriend, but sometimes I swear he's got a terrible memory." Ruby said. She was at thirteen.
"The meteor showers are at around two in the morning." Blake said.
"Nice. I should take him." Ruby said.
"Isn't that romantic? Watching the stars as the meteor shower begins." Blake said.
"Are you making fun of me?" Ruby asked.
"Oh, never. What would make you even think that?" Blake asked with a smile on her face. Blake was at eighteen now.
"Aren't you the one who pushed for this the most?" Ruby asked. She was at twenty. She won the first round. Ruby shuffled the deck then handed it to Blake to shuffle.
"How are you so lucky?" Blake asked.
"Just born that way." Ruby said.
"What are you going to do for Oscar's birthday?" Blake asked. She started off with a ten. It was a good opening hand. But it could backfire.
"I've got a few things planned." Ruby said. "But that meteor shower is a good start."
"Just don't do anything Yang wouldn't approve of." Blake said.
"Shut up." Ruby said.
Weiss was brushing her hair when she heard a knock at the door. Weiss used the force to open it and saw Rosa there.
"Hey, Weiss." Rosa said.
"What's wrong?" Weiss asked.
"Can I tell you something?" Rosa asked.
"Of course." Weiss patted the spot on the bed next to her. Rosa sat down. Quinlan's voice was echoing in her head to tell the others about what she went through.
"Master Vos and Doctor Lienna told me that I should talk to you guys about some of the stuff Maku put me through." Rosa said. Weiss stopped brushing and turned to Rosa.
"I'll always listen." Weiss said. Rosa looked down at her hands. She just wanted to say it without feeling like she was about to vomit. She knew it was the anxiety causing her to catastrophize.
"Did you hear about the cake I made a few days ago?" Rosa asked.
"Yes. Rosa, that wasn't your fault." Weiss said.
"You know about the big stuff. What he did to me, what he turned me into, what he took from me. But the cake was just another reminder how much he's affected my life." Rosa said. "I wasn't just being dramatic."
"I never thought you were." Weiss said.
"Thank you." Rosa said, grabbing Weiss's hand.
"Maku made me learn to bake. Not because I wanted to. Not because I enjoyed it. But because I had to fit in with the women in the criminal circles he threw me into. I don't even know if he actually believed that sexist garbage, or if he was just playing off what they believed. But either way, he made me use it." Rosa said.
"But you did make that yours. You changed it into something amazing that helps everyone." Weiss said.
"I know. But I never would have learned to bake if he didn't make me." Rosa said.
Weiss didn't say anything.
"And gambling? That was all him. He made me learn every game he knew when I was nine. He made me learn, made me enjoy it, so I could blend in with the men just as well as I blended in with the women. Just another way he shaped me." Rosa said.
"Rosa." Weiss said.
"My swearing? I picked that up when I was with him on those missions. The way I fight? The way I think? It's all him. Every part of me has his fingerprints on it." Rosa said.
"Rosa, you aren't his creation." Weiss said.
"Thank you for believing that." Rosa said.
"Because it's true." Weiss said. Rosa brought her hand back and wrapped her arm around Weiss for a hug.
"Thank you." Rosa said.
"I remember back at Beacon… when we were trying to get you to the dance, you said you didn't know any appropriate dances… did Maku make you…" Weiss started to ask.
"He made me learn… exotic dances." Rosa took a breath. "He made me learn strip dances." Rosa said.
"Why did he…?" Weiss started to ask.
"To fit in a role when we needed it. I hated every second of it." Rosa said. Weiss didn't know what to say to Rosa. Why had Maku made her learn those dances? Why did he have to be so terrible?
"Maku just cared about power and manipulation." Rosa said.
"I'm sorry." Weiss said.
"All those things, he made me whatever he wanted. He didn't give a shit if it was right or not. He shaped me." Rosa said.
"You broke free from him." Weiss said. Rosa looked at Weiss.
"What do you mean?" Rosa asked.
"I mean, you are not the person he had control over. Your fighting style is completely different. Yes, you swear a lot, but you've made it your own. Baking is your own too. And you never have to do any of those dances again. I've seen you dance. I think you're good at it, but if you ever need some encouragement, I can dance with you." Weiss said.
"Weiss… thank you." Rosa said.
Kaiser had checked on the tunnels with Valum. He had drones at each of them. They were going through the tunnels that had made it to the mines to make sure nothing happened. Valum stood next to him as he worked.
"I think the tunnels got bigger since I last saw them." Valum said.
"Probably." Kaiser said.
"But they still aren't large enough." Valum said.
"Also true. But that issue is one that we are rapidly solving. With the attacks on the outlining cities to happen any minute now, the alliance will send forces, and we get to dig in peace." Kaiser said.
"Who'd you send this time?" Valum asked.
"I had two volunteers to attack the cities. They used to be on a team with you, RKER." Kaiser said.
"Those two douchebags? Let's hope they get killed." Valum said.
"Let's hope they take some enemy forces out before they do." Kaiser said.
"Are you any closer to figuring out the air problem in there?" Valum asked.
"That will be solved once we have the tunnels as wide as we want. There is no reason to start before then." Kaiser said.
"So, once we have these tunnels dug out, the full-scale invasion is happening then, right?" Valum asked.
"This is only one of the parts we need to launch the invasion. We also need the locations of the shield generators. Once we have those, the walkers will bring them down and then we'll descend onto the city with everything we have." Kaiser said.
"Interesting. What about the other fleets?" Valum asked.
"They aren't here yet." Kaiser said.
"What if we only get the outer shields down before everyone arrives?" Valum asked.
"Then we burn Mantle to the ground." Kaiser said.
Sun woke up hearing noises outside his cell. Not the normal noises of the guards. It sounded like there was fighting. Why was there fighting?
Sun saw his door being kicked in. The light blinded his eyes. He turned away and blinked.
"Sun!"
Sun heard Blake's voice. His eyes shot forward, adjusting to the light. Blake ran forward and opened the cell door he was in. She stopped and looked at him. His body was bloodied and bruised. He saw the pity in her eyes.
"Oh, Sun. What did they do to you?" Blake asked. Sun couldn't believe it. Blake used her lightsaber to cut the chains. Sun fell right into her arms. Blake caught him and held him.
"I knew you'd come…" Sun said. He couldn't hold back the tears and hugged Blake. She was real. He could feel her in his arms.
"I'm getting you out of here." Blake said. She handed him his lightsaber, and a cloak. He put it on.
"I'm sorry it took so long to get to you." Blake said.
"You're here now. That's all that matters." Sun said.
They left the cell. Sun followed Blake, until he remembered the route Elira took him down.
"Blake, wait. In here." Sun said. Blake followed him into the room.
"Alright. We've got a ship waiting right outside." Blake said. Sun led Blake through the passageways. But before he got to the point where he and Elira went down to the alley, Sun turned to Blake. She took lead from there on. They avoided guards.
"Who's with you?" Sun asked.
"Yang. We stole a ship and made it past the Grimm." Blake said.
"Alright." Sun said.
They got outside. He saw the ship. He ran toward it when he saw Salem stepping out of the ship.
"No." Sun said.
"How stupid can you be, Sun? It didn't work last time. It's not going to work now. It will never work. You will always be under my control." Salem said.
He heard Blake turn on her lightsaber.
"You can't fight her. I'll hold her off while you get away." Sun said.
But then, he felt a burning across his back. He dropped his lightsaber and dropped to his knees. He turned around and saw that it wasn't Blake. It looked like… Lilith.
"You are never going to escape." Lilith said as she dropped her illusion. Sun felt the lightsaber strike across his back. It hurt like hell, but he also knew that it wasn't meant to kill. He let out a grunt of pain.
He ended back up in the cell.
Sun saw Blake open the door.
"Are you real?" Sun asked.
"Yes, I'm real." She said.
"When did I tell you I love you?" Sun asked. Blake stopped. She looked confused at Sun.
"You didn't." Blake said.
He got out again. He felt hesitant to follow her. She grabbed him and pulled him.
They got out of the prison again. He turned around and there was no Blake.
"Where'd you go?" Sun asked.
"She's not coming for you Sun." Salem said. She started electrocuting Sun.
He woke up back in the cell.
He saw Blake again…
After the fifth time, he knew it wasn't her. He fought the Blake illusion after that. It was rough, but he won and made it outside.
Only for Salem to be waiting for him. He was shocked.
He woke up back in the cell.
After the tenth time, he stopped leaving the cell. There was no point.
He knew that only pain existed at the end of this road. He couldn't handle the pain anymore.
He couldn't handle seeing Blake anymore.
He couldn't handle Salem hurting him anymore.
He just stopped.
Salem stood in the cell with him. Sun was unchained but making no attempt to move. He saw she left the door open.
"How are you doing, Sun?" Salem asked.
"Why do you do this?" Sun asked.
"Because Sun, I want you to break your chains. But as long as you stay a Jedi, that can't be possible. You would make for a strong Sith." Salem said.
"You spend so much time on me… Why?" Sun asked.
"I can do what I please. This is my domain. If I want something, I will have it. Eventually. I could take you right now if I wanted. I could force myself on you and there would be nothing you could do. But I don't. Because I want you to choose it. I want you to choose me. I want you to desire me. I want you to need me. I want you to desire to fulfill my every desire and lust. I want you to choose to fuck me." Salem said.
"Why? Why do you want me?" Sun asked. Salem had grabbed him from the floor and put him against the wall with one hand.
"I want to break every principle, every standard, everything you hold dear and give you strength. I want to see you give those up. I want to see the strongest willed Jedi I have seen in a very long-time break. One way or another." Salem said. She leaned in and kissed him.
Sun didn't have the energy to fight her off. He didn't have the will. He just suffered.
"I want you to beg for me, Sun." Salem said.
"Please… let me go." Sun said.
"That's not what I want to hear." Salem said. "But I am patient. I can wait for as long as I need to. Tell me Sun, did you enjoy Elira?"
That got a reaction. Sun struggled in her hand. He even hit her. She brought her head back, laughing at the hit. She brought her head back and grabbed his face.
"You want it to be like that? I can do that. But I thought you would have rather it be nice and relaxing." Salem said. She brought her hand away from his face.
"I could take you right now. I am the one who controls what you do. I control whether you see anyone or not. I get to decide if you are clean, or dirty. I have the power here. Not you." Salem said.
She forced another kiss on him before dropping him to the ground.
"Don't forget that you are mine." Salem said. She left the door open to his cell.
He didn't try to escape.
There was no point.
He couldn't escape.
Escape just meant pain.
Escape was impossible.
Ruby was getting everything ready for Oscar's sixteenth birthday midnight surprise party. Penny helped her as best an AI could. She was giving Ruby tips about the best place to lay down the mat so they could see the meteor shower best. The city had agreed to lower the lights so that the light pollution would be at its lowest.
"Ruby, do not forget to set an alarm so that you can get Oscar up." Penny said.
"Oh, I'm just going to stay up. It's not that late." Ruby said.
"I would not recommend that as it increases the risk of falling asleep during the event." Penny said.
"I'll be fine. I'll just chug an energy drink." Ruby said.
"That is also not recommended." Penny said.
"Don't worry. I got this. Have some faith in me." Ruby said.
Ruby had finished setting up the spot and checked the time. There was still enough time for her to get the first gift, make sure she looked good, and still get that energy boost.
Ruby went to Rosa before she went to bed.
"Rosa, I have a massive favor to ask you." Ruby said.
"What is it?" Rosa asked.
"Leave your door unlocked so I could get in around… two." Ruby said.
"Why?" Rosa asked.
"Tomorrow's Oscar's sixteenth birthday, and there's a meteor shower tonight, so I decided to show Oscar the meteor shower." Ruby said. Ruby had a blush on her face. She was so nervous about asking Rosa this, which she found adorable.
"That's cute. You got it." Rosa said. Ruby was so happy to get the support from her teammate and friend.
Ruby went to her room and found Oscar's first gift. She got it as a sort of gag gift because the real present would be something he would never forget. Weiss stepped into the room and saw Ruby hiding something behind her back.
"That's not suspicious at all." Weiss said.
"It's not for you." Ruby said.
"What is it?" Weiss said.
"It's for Oscar." Ruby said.
"Why are you hiding it?" Weiss asked.
"You are being really nosy Weiss." Ruby said.
"Just tell me if it's inappropriate or not." Weiss said.
"Why would I get Oscar something inappropriate?" Ruby asked, genuinely confused. Weiss just brought her hand to her face. That was Ruby for them. At least she was like this and not like Yang. Yang would almost certainly have something inappropriate behind her back. She loved trying to make Weiss blush with her suggestive jokes. Honestly, she wanted to know if she was the only target or not.
"Then why are you hiding it?" Weiss said. She wasn't done with Ruby yet. This could be the start of a prank. She hadn't done one in a while, but that just made her more tense now that she was hiding something.
"You probably wouldn't get the joke." Ruby said. Did... Did Ruby just insult her? Why did they all think that she had no sense of humor? She wasn't that stuck up!
"Are you saying I'm not funny?" Weiss asked.
"Yes." There was no hesitation at all.
"Rude." Weiss said. Weiss felt a slight blush come.
"That's alright. You don't have to be the funny one." Ruby said.
Oscar was sleeping soundly. Rosa was also asleep… or pretending to be. She may have promised Ruby to let her in, but she wanted to see what was going to happen. She heard the door open, and she heard Ruby start walking in. Ruby stood over Oscar. She was trying not to wake her up. Too bad Rosa never fell asleep. She looked at Ruby and Oscar with a smile on her face. They looked so cute together.
"Oscar… wake up." She whispered. Oscar grunted.
"Come on… it's going to be good." Ruby said. Oscar made another noise.
"Come on…" Ruby poked him in the face. Oscar finally got up.
"Ruby? What are you doing here?" He asked.
"Get up. We got somewhere to be." Ruby said.
"What, where? Let me get my clothes on first." Oscar said.
"Be quick about it. I'll wait outside. We're going to the balcony." Ruby said. Oscar was ready, fast. He was outside the door.
"Should I go get the others… Yeah." Rosa said. Rosa tossed off the blanket and knew what her mission was
Oscar got to the balcony with Ruby right beside him. She was happy for being up at two in the morning. He saw the blankets that were on the ground. He saw a thermos sitting on the blankets. He half expected to see candles or something else there, but hey, this was nice. He preferred things to have a more laid back feel to them
"We've got a meteor shower to watch." Ruby said.
"I've never seen one before." Oscar said. Oscar's eyes flew open. He was excited to see the show. He always wanted to watch one, but whenever there was one, it was so early in the morning that he could never stay up. And Aunt Em didn't wake him up. But now... Ruby was next to him and he'd get to see it. It would already be great.
"Well, now you do. Come on over." Ruby said. She lifted up the top two blankets and patted at the spot next to her for Oscar. He blushed a little. He sat down next to Ruby in the blanket. She sat up a little and grabbed the thermos.
"It's full of hot chocolate. Would you like some?" Ruby asked. The smile on her face warmed Oscar already. She grabbed a bag that had their cloaks in it, the ones that had the fire dust in them to keep them warm. He put his on and felt the warmth already.
"You really thought of everything. I would have helped if you told me." Oscar said.
"No, you don't lift one finger, birthday boy." Ruby said. She had a smirk on her face.
"Wait… is it my birthday already?" Oscar asked.
"Yes. Before the meteor shower starts, I got some gifts for you." Ruby said.
"You didn't have to Ruby." Oscar said.
"Of course I did." She reached to her back pocket and grabbed the small box with a bow on it. She handed it to him. He took the bow off, it was one of the pre-made ones that stick. He placed it on the thermos for now. He opened the box and saw it was a keychain… with a pine tree on it. He let out a chuckle at it.
"How long did you look for this? Must have taken everything out of you." Oscar said with a smile on his face.
"Oh, you know. I had to fight an ancient Sith to get that. All in a day's work." Ruby said. Oscar grabbed the thermos and poured himself some hot chocolate. He drank the capful and handed it over to Ruby. She got herself some and deliberately drank from where he drank from. But Oscar didn't know that was her intention. He didn't say anything, but he knew. Maron told him about the indirect kiss. He knew it was silly to get worked up over that. Ruby put the cap on and put the Thermos back where it was.
"I do have one more gift for you right now… But I need you to close your eyes." Ruby said. "And don't worry, the meteor show's not going to start for a few minutes."
"What is this next gift?" Oscar asked.
"Do you trust me?" Ruby asked. There was a slight blush coming to her face.
"Of course I do." Oscar said.
"Good. Trust me and close your eyes." Ruby said. Oscar did just as she asked.
Ruby felt her heart beating too fast and hard. She was worried it was about to burst out of her chest and ruin all the blankets. Oscar had his eyes closed. She leaned forward. She had no idea how this was going to work, but she's seen enough romance movies to know what to do… sort of. She sure as hell wasn't going to ask Yang about this. She'd get the wrong idea and probably start lecturing her about the birds and the bees. Weiss would be no help since she had no experience. And she was pretty sure Blake had none either.
Rosa had some… but she'd rather not bring up those bad memories. Ruby just had to trust herself that she was going to do this right. Besides, it's not like he has any experience kissing either.
Ruby silenced all her thoughts. She was inches away from his mouth now.
"Are your eyes closed?" Ruby asked. It was barely a whisper. She knew he felt her breath on his skin. He was trying hard not to shiver. For some reason, that made Ruby more excited to do this. She liked seeing the reaction she had on him.
She leaned forward, closing all the distance between them. Ruby closed her eyes.
She was kissing Oscar.
Oscar was kissing her.
They were kissing each other.
And neither of them really knew exactly what they were doing. It was awkward. A good kind of awkward. Ruby just noted the warmth of his lips on hers. She didn't know if she was supposed to do something else, but she didn't really watch people kiss enough to know if she was doing it right.
She realized that she needed to breathe. But just as much as she had no idea what she was doing… she wanted to continue. But she knew that it wouldn't be a good idea to faint because you refused to take a breath.
She broke off the kiss. They both took a breath or two… but their heads were still touching. Oscar opened his eyes, a blush covering his face. He had no idea what to say. Ruby barely had an idea what to say. She never kissed someone before! But she had to fake it till she made it. Not that he could tell. She knew that about him. She had to take the lead with this.
"Happy Birthday." Ruby said. Her cheeks were burning. She liked it. She wanted to do it again.
"Uh… would it be wrong for me to ask for another?" Oscar asked. His face was burning as well. He hadn't suspected a thing.
"Not at all." Ruby said with another smile. It was good to hear Oscar was nervous as she was about this. They kissed again.
Yang was standing at the entrance door to the balcony with Blake standing above her. They realized something happened when Blake's ears started twitching, a lot.
"What's going on?" Rosa asked.
"Why don't we just go up already? The meteor shower is going to start any minute." Weiss asked.
"I can't believe she'd be doing it." Yang said.
"Those two have no idea what they're doing." Blake said.
"Let me in. I want to see now." Rosa said. She stood as tall as she could get and saw Ruby and Oscar.
"This is why she wanted me to have my door unlocked?" Rosa said.
Weiss was now dying of curiosity and needed to see what they were all talking about. She tried to slip in between the space between Blake and Yang.
"Let me see." Weiss said.
"Ow. That was my foot." Blake said.
"Sorry, but I still need to see." Weiss said.
She finally fit in the space and looked out… to see Ruby and Oscar kissing.
"What?" Weiss said. She moved a little. That was all it took.
Soon, all four girls were falling forward and crashed on the ground of the Balcony. The noise stopped Ruby and Oscar. They turned back to see the rest of team RRWBY on the floor.
"What are you guys doing?" Ruby asked.
"Were you spying on us?" Oscar asked.
"We were just here to see the meteor shower!" Rosa shouted.
"Onto the kissing stage?" Yang said with a smirk, before Blake accidentally pushed her face down trying to get untangled in the mess at the door.
"Do you need some help?" Ren asked from behind the team. The rest of team JNPOR was there, trying to get to the balcony.
"Penny, I thought I saved this balcony for just Oscar and me? What is everyone doing here?" Ruby said.
"You never reserved the balcony." Penny said.
"And you didn't remind me?" Ruby asked.
Oscar laughed at everything happening. His hand found Ruby's. Yang found herself behind the two, keeping a hand on Oscar and Ruby's shoulder, letting them know she was there. The others eventually found spots around them, bringing blankets and refreshments of their own. Even Arslan and Neo showed up. Before the meteor shower started, Ruby made an important announcement.
"Today's Oscar's Birthday, just so everyone knows." Ruby said.
Oscar felt Jaune give him a slap on the back. Rosa promised to make him a cake, before Pyrrha added that they wouldn't put alcohol in it. Rosa laughed at that. She must have been doing better for her to laugh at that.
"They're starting." Nora said. Everyone looked up. Oscar interlocked his fingers with Ruby's. She almost looked, but she didn't. But she had a massive smile on her face. Then the meteor shower started in full force.
Ironwood had everyone back that he needed. It was the day after Oscar's birthday. He gave Oscar the day off. Now, Oscar was standing in his office with everyone there again. Qrow looked at everyone and placed a hard drive on Ironwood's desk.
"This is what the ace ops got from the last base. But it's so encrypted that they can't solve it. I was wondering if the black ops can." Qrow said.
"We can see. First, we need the code for the lamp." Ironwood said.
"Before I give it, do you want me in here while you activate the lamp, or could I leave?" Oscar asked.
"Why would you leave?" Ironwood asked.
"I have something planned in half an hour." Oscar said.
"Why would you plan something so close to us activating the lamp?" Glynda asked.
"Because it stops time." Oscar said.
Everyone was quite.
"What?" Theodore asked.
"Yeah. After she comes out, she stops time long enough to tell you what you want to know and everything goes back to normal." Oscar said.
"Why didn't you say something before?" Winter asked.
"Why would I need to? All of you… all of the people in the room, were going to experience it." Oscar said.
"How the hell does it freeze time?" Qrow asked.
"I don't know. Don't ask her. That's just wasting a question." Oscar said.
"You can go if you want, but wouldn't you really want to hear how we can beat Salem?" Ironwood said.
"I can ask for the others to come in. Except for Ruby. She's going to be busy." Oscar said. He just happened to not mention that they were going on a date, because he had no idea how Qrow was going to react to that.
"Have Jaune Arc and Rosa Reidan would help us greatly." Winter said.
"The code is the name of the guardian. I'll write it down because I know she will try to wake up and ruin everything." Oscar went to Ironwood's desk and wrote the code.
"Jinn"
"I would also recommend getting the Jedi masters in here. It's not some strange pronunciation." Oscar said. He was about to leave when Qrow put a hand on his shoulder.
"This thing you planned… it wouldn't happen to involve Ruby would it?" Qrow asked.
"It might." Oscar said. He wasn't going to lie to Qrow. He just wasn't going to give any unnecessary information.
"You two have gotten really close recently." Qrow said.
"Yeah, we probably should." Oscar said.
"Is right now the best time to be doing this? In here with everyone watching?" Winter said.
"You're right. I'll step out for a minute." Qrow said, leading Oscar out. As soon as the doors closed, Qrow looked down at Oscar.
"Yang told me what happened. When did you start dating my niece?" Qrow said.
"Not too long ago. Ozpin has nothing to do with it. He didn't want it to happen." Oscar said. He could see Qrow calm a bit after that.
"Good. But you better not try anything you shouldn't with her." Qrow said.
"You mean like you and Aunt Em." Oscar asked. Qrow wasn't ready for that one.
"You better not…"
"Or you and Willow." Oscar said. He might as well have shot him.
"Yes, your examination of my love life should show you what not to do." Qrow said.
"I think I'm good then. I don't mean this in a rude way… but we're nothing alike." Oscar said.
"Kid, you like pushing buttons." Qrow said.
"With some people." Oscar said.
Ruby turned the corner and saw Qrow and Oscar.
"Hey uncle Qrow, what are you doing?" Ruby asked.
"Interrogating your boyfriend." Qrow said.
"So you know then…" Ruby said.
Ozpin ran his hands through his hair. Why would Qrow think he had anything to do with Oscar and Ruby? He should have known him better.
It took another hour, but they had everyone gathered in Ironwood's office. Ruby even convinced Oscar to come back. Though he really didn't want to be here.
"Alright everyone." Ironwood said. Ironwood placed the lamp on his desk. "We're going to start."
Jaune looked at the relic and felt the warmth radiate off it. He looked at the others.
"What are we going to see?" Jaune asked.
"We're going to see a woman come out of the lamp. Ozpin wants me to tell you that she is not naked. Don't know why that's such an important detail. He says we're going to see a lot of blue." Oscar said.
"Let's just get this started." Qrow said. The Jedi masters looked at the relic. They could feel the force surrounding it. They could almost feel a pulse coming from it. Ironwood put his hand on the relic.
"Jinn." He said.
The Jedi felt the change immediately. They felt the change in the room. They felt the pulse of the Lamp starting to activate.
Ironwood noticed the change when the holograms for all the others froze. Ironwood let go of the relic and it floated to the center of the room. A blue mist started emitting from the relic.
"Finally. Another break from the lamp." They heard. Out of the smoke, a semi-nude figure appeared. Her skin was entirely blue, the same blue of the lamp. Her voice had an echo to it. She had dark blue hair. She had Dark Blue Sclera, and Light Blue Irises. She only wore various accessories, all of which were gold: a chain headdress, big hooped earrings, an extra earring in the right ear, a choker, cuffs on her wrists with chains dangling from them like broken shackles, a single bracelet on her left forearm, anklets, and a belt of chains around her waist that ended in a large ring with three prongs.
She also had pointed ears.
"Jedi! My favorites. And welcome back old man." Jinn turned to Oscar.
"Hello again, Jinn." Oscar said.
"You got to be a Jedi this time. I always wondered how it was to be in someone who didn't have the force after all the lives you were a Jedi." Jinn said.
"No you don't." Oscar said.
"Oh, I'm not so harsh that I can't worry about the only constant face… soul, I've seen." Jinn said.
"You get no end of joy in mocking me, don't you." Oscar said.
"Mock, never." Jinn twirled in the air and smirked at Oscar. She looked around at everyone and turned to Ironwood.
"You brought me forth, General Ironwood. What is your question?" Jinn asked, getting to business.
"What is the key to defeating Salem for good, and the connection to the Sith Emperor Vitiate?" Ironwood asked.
"Technically two questions… but because you brought the old man… and your handsome face, I'll allow it." Jinn said. Ironwood didn't react to that. Jinn liked that.
"The story begins, over five thousand years ago…" Jinn said.
Everyone was transported, through a white void, to a planet. A new world to all of them. It was a lively planet but filled with the energy of the dark side.
"This planet's name… is Nathema." Jinn narrated. Those who never left Remnant looked around in awe that they were on another planet… even if this was just a vision.
"Nathema used to have life. It used to be a planet with life, despite how dark it was. Monsters without equal, both animal, and sentient." Jinn explained. There were hordes of wild predators running across the fields, looking for their next meal. They found one, and they cruelly devoured it. Nora looked around and saw Ren. She grabbed his hand as they watched the predator eat the prey. They saw a boy appear. He was red skinned, and had face tendrils.
"This boy, the illegitimate child of a Sith pure blood aristocrat, and ruler of the planet, would one day soon bring the planet under his control. He would bring the galaxy to its knees. At six, he would commit his first, of many murders…" Jinn said.
Mace felt the dark side in the boy. Only Sidious had as strong a connection to the darkness. The boy… he was impossible to redeem. He could feel that the boy would never want to be redeemed.
"His first murder was his stepfather. The boy killed him after his stepfather learned his mother had an affair with the leader of the world, Darmath. But it was not out of love that the boy murdered. The boy had no concept of love. He would torture his own mother for months for betraying the family." Jinn narrated the events the Jedi were watching unravel around them. They saw the boy killing his stepfather and his mother. The boy's eyes were pure black. There was no feeling in him at all.
"How could he?" Ruby asked.
"Already so evil at six…" Rosa said. They saw him start to conquer the village he was in. He wasn't even seven.
"By the time he was ten, he had already become a cruel and violent leader, conquering the continent he called home. He had thousands of devoted followers, regardless of whether it was out of fear or devotion. It was then when the boy would face against his father, before stripping his father of the force and driving him mad, before killing him too." Jinn said.
The history happened before their eyes in seconds. They saw the dead he left in his wake. The bodies in the center of the town were tortured by his command. They saw the boy confronting his father and taking the force from him before murdering his father.
"It took just three more years for the boy to conquer the whole world." Jinn said.
Ironwood looked at the teenager now, whose hands were already covered in so much blood. Ironwood tried to understand how this happened. But he couldn't understand how someone could be born so evil.
Qrow saw the death and darkness in the eyes of the teenager. He felt… wrong. He felt like a disturbance in the force. A living wound. Even now, the lives of all the billions, and trillions who died because of him were already on the child. And he wore them like a crown.
"He would make a pilgrimage to Ziost, capital of the Sith Empire, and meet with one of the most fearsome Sith, Marka Ragnos, Dark Lord of all the Sith. He would gain the name Vitiate." Jinn said.
They saw the thirteen-year-old walk to a mighty and evil Sith and be named a Dark Lord. They saw him return to his home.
"He was a cunning and patient man. He avoided the infighting after the death of Marka Ragnos, caused by Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh. After Naga Sadow attacked the Republic and the Jedi, he led them right back to Korriban, into the heart of Sith Space. With all rivals for power out of the picture, Vitiate engaged in fearmongering the citizens of the Sith Empire. He brought all the remaining Sith Lords to him, promising them a bright future. But they forgot that there is no peace for the Sith. They walked right into his trap." Jinn explained.
They were all on the surface on Nathema. The Sith were gathering in a ritual. Vitiate was in the center of everything. There were eight thousand Sith there. Kit saw the ritual start after Vitiate dominated all of their minds.
"For ten days, Vitiate had prepared the ritual with the eight thousand Sith. On the tenth day, he unleashed everything. In an instant, all eight thousand Sith were dead." All the life around Vitiate was dead. The Jedi all felt the death of every living thing on the planet. The planet died.
"He had made himself… immortal." Jinn said.
"Is this what Salem did?" Ironwood asked.
"How can he absorb the life of an entire planet?" Ren asked.
"He gathered everyone else and took them to the unknown region to a planet called Dromund Kaas. He ruled for centuries as an immortal emperor. For centuries, he spread darkness and death." Jinn said.
They were on the planet Dromund Kaas, standing in the dark storm that constantly covered it. They saw the creatures that covered the planet and saw them being fought back. They saw Kaas city being built. They saw the world being conquered and the Sith creating places of power all over. They saw ghosts starting to fill the planet around them. The more the cities were built around them, the more ghosts appeared.
"Each of these ghosts are those who Emperor Vitiate destroyed. He turned the greatest of heroes into the greatest of villains. His voice caused wars and genocides. Planets were glassed by those who followed his words. Revan, Malak, Meetra Surik were all heroes who went to war with the Mandalorians. All three were his victims. All three were heroes who fell." Jinn said.
They saw the three heroes of the Mandalorian wars. They saw them change during the war. They saw Revan and Malak fall to the dark side. They saw Meetra walk away. They saw Malak slash at and almost kill Revan. They saw Revan meet a woman, Bastila Shan. They saw Revan and Bastila kill Malak. Revan disappeared. Meetra came back. She followed Revan.
"Revan and Meetra fought the emperor. They lost." Jinn said.
"Revan… He was a legend. But he just… vanished from the records one day." Jaune said.
"Revan was captured by Vitiate. Living long past his natural life. Meetra was murdered by an ally." Jinn said.
"There is never a defeat of so great an evil without countless sacrifices." Jinn said.
"How did he finally die?" Ironwood asked.
"A generation of legends. Eight beings who unknowingly shaped their galaxy in a time of peace… and war." Jinn said. Eight shadowy figures appeared.
"Vitiate's host body was killed by a Jedi known as the Hero of Tython. Revan tried to summon him again only for his attempt to fail, and for Revan to finally die. Then the outlander, or perhaps… outlanders, arose. The eternal empire was revealed, and the emperor, Vitiate, who was known as Valkorion, was killed by his son, Arcann, and the work of those he connected to." Jinn said. They saw the figures all being haunted by a man. A regular looking man, but a man none the less. There were other figures.
"The outlanders… the Commanders were the key to finally killing Tenebrae. They found the last things that anchored him to the mortal plane. Then with the help of all the victims of Tenebrae came together. Destroying the final anchor did not kill him. After trapping him, the Commanders, the Jedi Grandmaster, and all the billions, and trillions of victims of the emperor appeared. They had destroyed the body, the anchor, and the spirit. The only thing left was the Ego." Jinn said.
They saw all the ghosts appear in the mindscape of the emperor. They saw the force itself have to rebalance the scales, and they saw the end of the emperor.
"So ends the tale of Emperor Vitiate, who reigned for 1,300 years." Jinn said.
"What does this have to do with Salem?" Ruby asked.
"Salem is following in his footsteps. She did the same ritual." Jinn said.
"How is there life on this planet then?" Yang asked.
"A creature of creation came and restarted all life. It brought Ozma back. A creature of destruction cursed Ozma to walk the land in anger of such destructive power being released. Ozma failed to stop Salem when he could. Now, thousands of years later, the old man stands before you with a young man's face." Jinn said.
"Are you saying Salem can be defeated?" Oscar asked.
"Everything must die eventually." Jinn said.
"What about you?" Oscar asked.
"Yes, eventually I too will die. Just as stars die." Jinn said.
"Then why did you waste so much of our time and not tell me about the other questions I could have asked for?" Oscar asked.
"I was lonely old man. I wanted to keep seeing you." Jinn admitted. "A spirit like me is a rare thing to find."
"What is Salem's anchor?" Rosa asked.
"You have already seen it." Jinn said. Jinn faded back into the lamp.
Everything started moving again.
"What did you see?" Theodore asked.
Rosa was trying to figure out what Jinn meant by her had already seen the anchor.
Where would Salem keep the most important thing to her existence? She had seen it. Then she remembered that time when Salem brought her down to show her what was most likely a clone of Summer Rose. There was more off with that place than the machine. Could it have been that Summer Rose clone was an anchor? Or was it the machine?
Sun woke up in the cell. He wasn't chained anymore. The door was open, but he just didn't go. There would have been no point. Leaving only meant he got hurt. He couldn't keep getting hurt. He didn't have the strength to endure it anymore.
Salem walked in through the door and stood over Sun.
"Why do you keep doing this to yourself?" Salem asked. Sun didn't say anything. "Why don't you sleep in the bed?"
That got his attention.
"What bed?" Sun asked.
"The one I've always provided for you. The one right there. But instead you choose to sleep on the floor. You aren't an animal." Salem said. Sun looked at her so confused.
"When did you put that in there?" Sun asked.
"It's always been there." Salem said.
"I would know if there's always were a fucking bed in here." Sun said.
"It's so sad you keep doing this to yourself. Why can't you see what's right in front of you?" Salem asked. She grabbed Sun and brought him to the bed.
"Why are you keeping me here?" Sun asked.
"I've never kept you here. The door has always been open." Salem said.
"Bullshit." Sun said.
"Why are you so cruel to me Sun? I saved you from the others." Salem said. Sun just glared at her. Salem leaned down and kissed his cheek.
"I'm trying to save your mind. But the others want me to kill you." Salem said. Sun didn't know what she was saying.
"None of that is true." Sun said.
"Oh, poor Sun. You don't even remember what the others did to you. They hurt you so terribly. I saved your life." Salem said. "I cleaned you; I fed you, I tried to protect you, but you just keep running." Salem said.
"Elira cleaned me." Sun said.
"Who's Elira?" Salem asked.
"The woman you killed." Sun growled.
"I don't have any idea what you're talking about. Wait… are you talking about the guard who tried to rape you?" Salem asked. "Yes, I killed her. You were screaming as she kept hurting you. She ripped the clothes off you and the others won't let me get you anything else."
"You're lying." Sun said, his voice starting to shake. Was she lying? She was.
"I wish you would remember… but after what they did to you, no wonder you can't. Your brain is just trying to protect you." Salem said. She said it almost kindly. She planted another kiss on him.
What was she doing? Why was she acting like this? She hurt him so much…
Right?
He started to breathe heavily.
"Sun? Are you okay?" Salem asked.
"Why are you doing this?" Sun asked.
"Because I love you Sun. I thought you remembered that. Did you forget…" Salem put a finger on his chest and brought it down gently. "Everything we did? Did you forget the sex?"
"We never had it. What are you doing?" Sun asked.
"I can remind you if you want." Salem said.
"No." Sun said.
"Sun… you really don't remember?" Salem asked, her voice filled with hurt. "You asked for it? Were you just using me?"
"What? No… I… no. I never slept with you." Sun said.
"Sun… please. Remember. Here, this might help…" Salem started to take off her clothes.
He didn't sleep with Salem. It was with Elira.
Right?
He saw Salem's naked body standing over him. Sun tried not to react, but his body did. Salem stood there and looked at it.
"Your body remembers." Salem said.
"No… that's not it." Sun said.
"Sun… do you want me?" Salem asked. Sun didn't reply at first. He had no idea what to say. He wanted to say no.
"You're just trying to mess me up more." Sun said.
"Maybe it was too much to expect your mind to be ready for that. I'm sorry Sun." Salem said before putting her clothes back on. "When you remember, I'll do whatever you want me to do."
Salem left. Sun just looked at her. Why was she acting like that? He remembered everything she put him through…
Right?
Salem left the room and saw Lilith there.
"What was that about?" Lilith asked.
"Gaslighting." Salem said.
"Do you want to have sex with him?" Lilith asked.
"It doesn't matter if I do or not. It's placing it so close and so far. Come with me. It's time to check on the machine." Salem said.
Salem had taken Lilith to the lowest part of her realm. This is where she hid her original body. She had shown them to Umbra. She had no idea what she had seen. The bodies around them were mostly Silver-eyed warriors, but there was one body there… one that hung in the center of the spawning room of the Grimm. That was what she wanted Umbra to remember from this room. That Summer Rose was here and that it created Grimm.
But it was all just a ploy. A ploy to keep her original body safe and secure. It was her anchor here. Its existence would forever keep her in the mortal plane. Even if she lost her body for a few years, she would be able to easily get another body.
"What is this place, Lady Salem?" Lilith asked.
"This… is the most important room in the entire realm." Salem said. "This is where we are creating more advanced Grimm. This is where we will lay a trap for the Jedi in case they ever somehow make it here."
"Why are you showing me this?" Lilith asked.
"Because, Lilith, I trust you with the protection of this room to you." Salem said.
What she didn't tell Lilith was that she was next on her list for Vessels. She just needed to make sure this one would be as good as Umbra. Lilith had no fear of sex unlike Umbra. She had a similar body type to Salem. It would be a simple change. She was feeling this body beginning to wear a bit thin. It was about time to get a new one.
Rosa just got out of another session. She finally said it.
"I've… been feeling… alone. Even with my friends there with me." Rosa said.
"Why do you think that is?" Doctor Lienna asked. It took Rosa so long to admit that she felt the division between her and her friends. It took even longer to admit why it existed.
"Because… I'm not a Jedi. Not like them. I thought I could be something in between but I can't. It's not working. I've not grown any. I can't be neutral any longer." Rosa said.
Rosa wanted to be with her friends like she used to be. She missed the connection they shared. It took more time to admit that she also wanted to be a Jedi again for herself. To prove to herself that she had grown beyond Maku, and what the Sith did to her.
But she had no idea how she could be a Jedi again. She knew the others basically thought she was a Jedi again… but she wasn't a member. There was something about announcing your loyalty that helped.
She wanted to stop feeling like an outsider with the people she betrayed everyone for. She wanted to stop feeling guilty when she used their time without helping them. She wanted to be able to stand with them, truly stand with them, again. She knew that to do that, she would have to rejoin the Jedi. But she didn't know if they would want her back.
The session didn't last much longer than that. She needed to see if she could. She had to go to two places.
Rosa knocked on the door to Ruby and Weiss's dorm. Ruby opened the door. She saw the look on Rosa's face. Something was different.
"Ruby… Thank you for holding onto my weapons." Rosa said.
"You don't have to thank me." Ruby said.
"I need to thank you for everything you've done for me. Thank you for helping me. But now… I'm ready." Rosa said. She saw Ruby's face change as she shook her head. Ruby grabbed the weapon belts. She felt the weight of the weapons and held them in her hands. She went back to Rosa and held the weapons. Rosa saw them. She hugged Ruby.
"Thank you so much. I never wanted to worry you, but I had to keep them away." Rosa said.
"I understand. I'm proud of you." Ruby said. She hooked the belt on Rosa. Rosa heard the click of the belt connecting.
"If I ever need to give them back to you…" Rosa said.
"I'll be here for you." Ruby said.
"Thank you." Rosa said. She gave Ruby a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for everything."
"A kiss?" Ruby asked.
"I love you like a sister." Rosa said. Rosa smiled as she pulled Ruby back. "I have to ask Master Windu something now."
"What is it?" Ruby asked.
"I'm going to ask him… If I can rejoin the Jedi." Rosa said. She smiled at her.
"You're going to be amazing." Ruby said.
She stood outside of Mace Windu's door. She knew she had to go to Mace for this. Even if she still couldn't feel safe around him. She needed to see if she could come back.
She knocked on the door. Mace opened it and had a shocked look when he saw Rosa.
"I never expected you to show up here." Mace said.
"I have something I need to ask you." Rosa said.
"Would you like to come in?" Mace asked.
"No… but I will." Rosa said.
Rosa looked around. It was similar to Shaak Ti's room.
"What is it that you wished to discuss with me?" Mace asked. Rosa knew this was the moment. She took a breath.
"Master Windu… I… I want to rejoin the Jedi." Rosa said. There, she said it. It was up to him to decide if she was too broken to be a Jedi or not. Mace sat down on the floor, crossing his legs as he did. He brought his fingers to his mouth.
"Why?" Mace asked.
Rosa turned to him. She saw the Jedi master. She saw the man who scared her as a youngling. The man who failed her.
She saw the man who showed how much he had suffered for his mistakes with his arm. She saw the Jedi master who said nothing about Ruby dating someone. She saw the man who had known failure at a level no one else could understand.
"Because… I don't want to be alone anymore. I don't want to bring everyone down anymore. I don't want to wake up and afraid that I'm going to fuck everything up and get everyone killed. Because I have demons that I have to face. Because I don't know who I should be, and I know that maybe the Jedi will give me something to be. Because I don't want to feel like I'm bringing everyone down. Because I don't want to make anymore excuses for myself. Because they're my family and I've left them. Is that enough for you?" Rosa said. She was trying to hold back the emotions.
"Because… I'm scared. And I know there's nowhere else that can help me. Because maybe if I do I can prove to myself that Maku didn't shape every aspect of my life. Maybe because I can finally look myself in a mirror without seeing Umbra and hating myself for mistakes that everyone has said they've already forgiven me for. Maybe because I can finally trust myself again. Maybe because if I do I won't feel so broken anymore." Rosa said, just pouring everything out to Mace Windu. She couldn't stop herself anymore. She just kept talking. She didn't know why she couldn't stop herself.
"Maybe because I can finally figure out if I'm worth a damn anymore." Rosa said. She dropped to the floor.
Mace just sat there.
"Are you sure being a Jedi again will really help you?" Mace asked. Rosa looked up at him. His face didn't change.
"What are you asking?" Rosa asked.
"You have to do this for the right reason." Mace said.
"Didn't I give you enough reasons?" Rosa asked.
"Yes. You did give me many reasons. Did you mean them?" Mace asked.
"Why don't you want me to be a Jedi? Do you hate me that much for what I've done?" Rosa asked.
"I don't hate you and never have. I want you to be a Jedi again. I want you to do it for the right reasons. I want to make sure you are in for good." Mace said.
"How do I do that?" Rosa asked. Her voice almost broke.
Mace just sat there. He was examining her. She could be a Jedi, he knew. She was once, and she could be an amazing Jedi once again.
"You are far beyond the Padawan level in skill with the force and lightsaber. There is something we can do. You never finished your trials under Maku, and I now believe he never would have let you finish. But there is something we can do to test you." Mace said.
"What is it?" Rosa asked.
"There is a test that we can give you. I will warn you now, the test will be difficult and dangerous. And once you begin, you will not remember what I'm about to tell you." Mace said.
"What is it?" Rosa asked.
"There is a modified version of the Trials that are given to those who have fallen to the dark side and returned. It is an advanced version of the Knight trials, and they happen all at once. They are called, the Purification Trials."
Author's Notes: Got this chapter done. At the start I didn't know what to do, so I decided to have the first part of this have a lot of flashes between characters. The Rosegarden kiss was planned before they even started dating.
The Backstory of Vitiate is as accurate as I understand it. Doesn't mean I still fully understand how Vitiate was killed, but it does mean that I got this to be as accurate as I understand.
We got to see Sun again… but he's still being put through unimaginable torment. She's trying to break his mind right now, which she's basically done. Sun said that the next time he saw Blake's face he knew he was safe, but he wasn't.
Now Sun has no grasp on reality and he's able to be in the cell with the door open without him going to escape. He's seeing dead people. He is not in a good mental spot right now. And he's only seeing Salem, who's gaslighting him.
Yes, Rosa is going to try to rejoin the Jedi next chapter. The Purification Trails are an idea that I came up with. They're going to be explored in the next chapter and we're going to see how Rosa rejoins the Jedi. But they are like all the different Knight trials, but focused on why the person fell to the dark side. It goes over the mental state of the character.
So, Rosa is actively going to therapy. It is helping her. If you have a mental illness, get the help you need. We shouldn't look down on people with mental illnesses. We don't look down on people who have regular illnesses. And that's what a mental illness is. People are out there that can and will help you if you are suffering from any mental health issues. I've become somewhat passionate about this topic recently.
