The Void, Date Unknown
I lost track of how long I was trapped there, suspended in a timeless agony, or how many times I descended into madness, only to claw my way back to sanity when boredom became too unbearable—when the cruel game of playing God in my mind lost its allure. The loneliness was the true price of my existence. My thoughts were relentless reminders of my family, both those alive and those who had departed. I would spiral into an endless cycle of wondering—did they miss me? Were they angry or disappointed? Did tears fall from their eyes, or did they scream my name in anguish? Did they stand in silent sorrow at my funeral, their grief muted by the weight of their loss?
But most importantly, why me?
This dreary routine played on a loop, a monotonous melody of despair, over and over again. That was, at least until I met him—no, them? After all my time in the void, I had known only the suffocating emptiness and the echoes of my isolation. But then, quite unexpectedly, I was not alone. He—she?—They appeared before me.
They materialized from the depths of the void, with cascading strands of long, golden curls that caught an indistinct light and shimmered delicately. Their eyes were a striking blue, captivating and entrancing, like the clearest sky on the brightest day. The face that wore those enchanting features possessed a feminine charm, so exquisite that it transcended anything I had ever seen or even dared to imagine in my solitary existence.
Yet, I was left perplexed; despite the sheer beauty radiating from this being, their body was distinctly masculine and entirely hairless, devoid of typical physical markers that would label them as either just a man or woman. There was a serene and haunting quality to this being—a blend of both genders that sent ripples through the calm, dark waters of my mind, challenging everything I had come to accept about identity and existence within the void.
With my bodiless soul adrift in the void, I had no mouth to speak. An unsettling question echoed in my mind: "What are you? Another hallucination?" Just as the uncertainty settled, the being before me let out a soft, melodic giggle, as if my confusion tickled some hidden part of them.
"No. Not at all," they replied, their voice flowing like warm honey, soothing yet laced with an undercurrent of authority. As they floated closer, I could see them more clearly. A radiant figure, their form shimmered softly, like the distant glow of starlight against the backdrop of darkness. A dazzling row of perfectly white teeth gleamed in their warm, inviting smile, igniting a flicker of curiosity within me.
"I have many names," they continued, their tone shifting, almost reminiscent, as if invoking memories long past. There was a weight to their words, each name they carried wrapped in layers of history and significance. "Some are forbidden, shrouded in ancient secrets, and some lie buried in the realms of the unknown. Yet others resonate across all of reality, echoing in the hearts and minds of countless beings."
As they paused, their expression turned contemplative; I could sense the depth of their thoughts swirling around us. "But you, my lost soul, may call me Nick." The name hung in the air, filled with a sense of promise and intrigue, as if it held power itself.
"Are you… God?" I ventured, my voice trembling as I fought to swallow the knot of fear in my throat. "The God?" Their self-description and the sheer, breathtaking perfection of their form left me grappling for understanding. Before my demise, I had been an atheist, convinced that death whisked you away to nothingness. Oh, how fervently I wished I had been mistaken. But here they were, weren't they? Here to rescue me from this cruel existence and offer me salvation.
Nick's face twitched, a fleeting shadow of a scowl replacing the warmth of their smile. The inviting atmosphere transformed in an instant as if a weighty curtain had been drawn across the previously serene space. I felt the change like a chill settling into my bones.
"No, little soul." Nick's voice was neutral but laced with a razor-sharp edge, the hint of danger hanging in the air. "I'm not… Him." The pause that followed felt like an eternity, heavy with meaning. Then, as if flipping a switch, they smiled once more, and the suffocating pressure lifted. "I'm better!" Nick declared with proud enthusiasm. "I can offer you the salvation you so desperately seek!"
A blend of confusion and curiosity washed over me, yet I found myself utterly captivated. There was only one thing I wanted, a longing that burned within me. Home. "Can you take me out of here?" I whispered, the words escaping my thoughts before I could wrestle them back into the shadows of my mind.
"Of course, I can," The beautiful being replied, their voice dripping with a playful confidence, dismissing my question as though it were the most absurd thing anyone could ever utter. Their eyes sparkled with an otherworldly intensity, holding my gaze with a grip that felt both inviting and chilling. "Not just that—I can even bring you back to life. Free to live however you please." The weight of their words hung in the air between us, heavy with promise.
Was I truly considering this? A mix of hope and desperation surged within me. "Yes! Yes, please!" I found myself pleading, the urgency of my yearning clawing at my insides, terrified that this precious opportunity might slip away like sand through my fingers. "I want to live again!" The thought of rejoining my family, of feeling the warmth of their embrace, flooded my mind with images that felt almost too precious to claim.
Nick giggled softly, a sound that danced through the air—a melody both enchanting and unnerving. It sent a shiver down my spine, filling me with equal parts thrill and trepidation. "Then, of course, my little friend. I will grant your wish."
At that moment, my nonexistent heart raced with excitement, an echo of what it once was. This was it! The very moment I had dared to dream of—the chance to escape the suffocating darkness that had clung to me for so long, to reunite with those I loved. I could see their faces again, illuminated by joy, and feel their warm embraces that had been nothing but a haunting memory. We would share tears of joy, a flood of overwhelming relief as I recounted the nightmare that had imprisoned me for far too long. I could go back home—
"But," they interrupted, a playful smirk spreading across their lips, "there is always a cost."
Naturally, they wanted something in return. The realization sent a ripple of unease through me, but I felt undeterred, my resolve hardening with each passing moment. At this point, I would do anything—whatever they desired.
"Just name your price, Nick," I declared, my voice steady and unwavering, brimming with determination for whatever awaited me in this uncharted terrain of possibility.
Nick's bright, wide smile somehow expanded even further with my declaration, a spark of delight shimmering in his gaze. "Excellent!" they exclaimed, their voice brimming with enthusiasm. "Now listen closely, for I require but one thing from you…" Nick paused dramatically, the air around us thick with anticipation. I couldn't help but feel a wave of nervous excitement wash over me; they really knew how to create suspense.
"TO BE ENTERTAINING!"
For a moment, disbelief washed over me, mingling with a sense of confusion. This incredible, enigmatic being had pierced the very fabric of the Void to offer me a monumental chance at something extraordinary, and all they wanted was… entertainment.
My mind stumbled, struggling to grasp the absurdity of it all. "What?"
"That's right, my friend!" Nick's perpetual smile shone brighter. "I simply desire you to entertain me. A modest request, wouldn't you agree?"
With an elegance that defied reality, Nick's hand reached out, brushing against a face that shouldn't even exist. A surge of joy erupted within me at the unexpected sensation—like a long-lost warmth returning after an eternity in the cold.
"Final chance," Nick continued, their crystal-blue eyes locked onto mine, unyielding and expectant. "Do you accept?"
In that moment, clarity struck. I realized the magnitude of what was being offered. I wouldn't, couldn't let this opportunity slip through my fingers. "Yes, I will—"
But before I could finish, a blinding light engulfed me, accompanied by a cacophony of sounds and sensations I thought I had long forgotten, overwhelming my senses in a whirlwind of vibrant chaos.
The last thing I heard was Nick's frightening words. "Now don't disappoint me, my friend. Or I'll have to bring the entertainment to you."
