(this is a story I came up with about two years ago and I finally get to tell it. I hope you enjoy)
(for some context, this takes place around four avatars after Korra)
(also I'm bad with coming up with names that fit in the world building so a lot of characters share their name with someone from ATLA or TLOK but its either spelt differently or they're straight up named after them)
water. earth. fire. air.
years ago, there was the avatar.
master of all four elements.
but then there was
the death of the avatar.
in the avatars place was
Emily, the water master. Chidori, the earth master. Sara, the fire master. Kelly, the air master.
no one believes they can do it.
but I think that together they'll be the best avatar yet
whack! a perfect circle of rock flew out from the wall of stone, almost hitting an elder woman trimming her flowers in the head.
"hey watch it! are you trying to kill me!?" she yelled as the wall of stone lowered to reveal a fifteen year old girl with a green plaster on her left cheek and cloth wrapped around the lower part of both of her arms. she had milk chocolate colored skin, light brown hair tied in space buns, shiny brown eyes and was wearing a grayish green short sleeved crop top, grayish dark green shorts with a golden buckle and dark green sneakers.
"no! of course not! I'd never try to kill someone! on purpose at least" she replied, whispering the last part as she looked away.
the elder woman scoffed before returning to what she was doing.
the girl walked inside the one storey two bedroom house behind her, taking off her shoes and leaving them on the small back porch.
"hi mom" she sighed to the woman cooking in the small kitchen.
"oh hello Chidori! how is your training going?" the woman asked.
"good good, the neighbor still thinks I'm trying to kill her" the girl, Chidori replied with a defeated shrug.
"Cheryl? just ignore her, that lady has always been crazy. she thinks she's so above everyone else because she was the avatar's history teacher in seventh grade" the woman, Chidori's mother spoke, her eyes on the pancakes she was making.
"what happened to the avatar?" Chidori nervously asked.
her mother sighed as she turned off the stove and moved the frying pan.
"she died about a month before you were born. she had severe anxiety of pretty much every kind and needed a guide dog for her issues. a year after she was discovered to be the avatar she got so overwhelmed she had a heart attack and went into the avatar state at the same time. she didn't make it" she explained.
"thanks for telling me" Chidori awkwardly replied before heading to the smaller of the two bedrooms.
as she shut the door behind her, her eyes scanned the room. it had nothing but a one person bed, a study desk with a few books and a metal coin on it.
she sat down at the desk with a small sigh.
Chidori then grabbed the metal coin and began repeatedly dropping it and picking it up again.
she stopped when she heard the front door open.
with a deep breath, she stood up and opened her bedroom door.
"mom? dad? can I ask you something?" Chidori asked her mother and the man putting down a briefcase.
"what is it Chi?" the man, Chidori's father asked.
"I want to go to metal bending school" Chidori announced.
"oh Chi, I'm sorry but we just can't afford anything but regular school for you right now" he sadly replied.
"can you even metalbend?" her mother questioned.
"no. but I've been trying really, really hard! I swear I almost got it!" she responded with hope.
"tell you what dear, they actually give scholarships to earthbenders with promising metal bending potential. so if you train really, really hard, they might give you one" her father spoke as he left his briefcase on the floor and placed his hand on her shoulder.
"okay" she mumbled before he pulled his hand away.
"hey!" a teenage girl called out as she ran through the mall.
"hi Katana" a fifteen year old girl with a blue plaster on her left cheek and cloth wrapped around the lower part of both of her arms said as she ran up to her. she had white chocolate colored skin, brown hair tied in a ponytail with a light blue hair extension, dark green eyes and was wearing a sleeveless grayish blue dress, black shorts and grayish light blue heeled sandals.
"you ready to roll Emily?" the teenage girl, Katana asked.
"always" the fifteen year old, Emily replied with a wink.
"let's go!" Katana yelled, grabbing Emily's hand and leading her out of the mall.
"wait Katana stop" Emily pulled away right outside the stone doors.
"what is it?" she asked.
"hey kid, are you alright?" Emily asked as she walked up to a crying kid with a bruised knee.
"n-no. I fell off my skateboard and my knee hurts really bad" the boy explained, the earth around him shivering.
"Katana, do you have any water?" Emily questioned.
"I think I have a water bottle in here" Katana replied as she took off her bag and began digging through it.
Katana pulled out a plastic water bottle, opened it and held it out.
Emily bended the water out of the bottle and moved it onto the boy's knee.
she then quickly healed it.
when Emily was done she bended the water back into the bottle, which Katana quickly shut.
"I didn't know you can do healing" Katana commented as she put the water bottle back in her bag and put it on.
"how? I'm literally in advanced healing classes in school" Emily said with a small laugh.
"really? I thought you were terrible at water bending?" Katana laughed.
"with most of it. healing seems to be the only kind of water bending I'm good at. if it weren't for healing I'd probably think I'm wasting my abilities" Emily spoke as she kicked a pebble and then knelt down.
"Emily-" Katana muttered.
"anyways, I'm rambling. let's go!" Emily interrupted as she stood up and began running off.
"Emily!" Katana cried out as she chased after her.
a fifteen year old girl dumped a bag of dog food into a row of pet bowls. she had milk chocolate colored skin, pale blonde hair that faded to light brown at the tips and roots tied into a bun and covered the left side of her face, pale blue eyes and was wearing a white shirt, a red skort, a grayish purple apron and black loafers.
"come and get it!" she called out as she pulled up the bag of dog food to stop pouring.
a crowd of dogs ran up and dug into the full pet bowls.
"Sara, your shift is over" a older woman commented as she entered the room.
"okay" the girl, Sara replied with a nod.
she then put the dog food on a high shelf and took off the apron, placing it on a hook next to matching aprons.
"have a good day" Sara said with a wave as she walked past the woman and began walking down the hallway.
"you too!" the woman replied.
she then walked through the building until she was outside in the suns rays.
Sara then created a tiny ball of fire, bending it between her palms repeatedly as she began leaving the area.
"that's neat. how good are you at fire bending?" a random man asked as he approached her.
"not very, this is mostly the only thing I know" Sara replied with a shrug.
"good to know" he spoke before shooting a bolt of lightning at her, which she easily caught with her finger and made shoot at him through another.
"I said mostly" Sara told the electrocuted man as her eyes flashed white.
"have a good day" she said bluntly as she began walking away.
the man then shot a flame at her from behind.
she dodged the flame, which instead burned her hair out of its bun.
Sara gasped, her eyes flickering white as she used bending to pull the fire out of her now shorter charred hair and flung it at the man.
"don't do that AGAIN!" she yelled, catching the attention of all the people in the nearby area as her eyes stopped flickering white.
"y-your the avatar" the man muttered.
"no. the avatars dead" she replied before running away.
"ugh! this is so hard!" a fifteen year old girl with a yellow plaster on her left cheek and cloth wrapped around the lower part of both of her arms complained as she sat down on a bench, scratching her head with both hands. she had white chocolate colored skin, dark brown hair kept in a pixie cut, hazel colored eyes and was wearing a light yellow sleeveless jumpsuit and light red boots.
"that's because you're getting frustrated, your anger issues are mentally and spiritually stopping you from improving your bending. you're able to do very basic airbending but unless you fix your temper, you're not going to be improving anytime soon. you need to learn how to calm down. and no, stimming will not help you calm down" an older woman explained, using her staff to pull the girl's right hand away from her head.
"but I can't help it! I just get so frustrated with everything! my grades, my parents divorce, my bending!" she replied as she stood up and stopped scratching her head.
"Kelly. I can tell you have amazing potential. I want you to reach it. but that's not going to happen unless you fix your anger" the woman explained, using her staff to direct the girl, Kelly to look her in the eyes.
"I know. and I'm trying I swear! its just not clicking" Kelly responded with a sigh.
"you'll get it one day. I know it. you are dismissed" the woman spoke with a wave of her staff.
Kelly grabbed the light red jacket lying on the bench and put it on as she walked away.
"thanks for the lesson miss Luna" Kelly said from the doorway before leaving.
"your welcome dear" the woman, Luna replied.
Kelly walked through the hallway of the air temple, her hands in fists.
"I just want to learn" she muttered under her breath.
"hey sis! how's your classes going?" a boy a few years younger then her asked as he walked up to her.
"hey Zuiko. they're going terribly. I'm still not improving. heck, you're three levels ahead of me and I was six when you were born!" Kelly replied, gesturing with her hands.
"you'll get it soon, I just know it!" the boy, Zuiko spoke with a smile.
"thanks you little squirt" Kelly laughed, ruffling his hair.
"hey!" he squeaked before she ran off.
"I'm gonna get you!" he cheered as he ran after her through the hallways.
