"I still find it hard to believe that this is happening to me," Klaus murmured, discarding his sketchbook to the bedside table and his focus was completely on Caroline's baby bump.

She was almost 6 months along now but she looked further along, a side effect of carrying twins but God was she beautiful. She had the pregnancy glow humans went on and on about.

Caroline was quiet as she watched him through tired eyes, talking to their children, his voice warm and low.

He spoke in that tone he reserved solely for her.

"All my life it was one bad thing after another. Again and again. Some would say I deserve to be miserable to suffer for all the pain, grief, and death I caused during my time on this earth and they would be right."

Caroline's heartache hearing him talk about deserving to be unhappy. Yes, he had done horrible things, and often he did it to hurt others, but that didn't mean he wasn't capable of change, of being good.

She saw the good in him in every moment they shared, his selflessness when it came to her and their children.

"There is one thing I know without a doubt that I did right, and that is saving your mother on her birthday. There's nothing about that moment I don't remember. She was so vulnerable that night, she was in pain and delirious from the wolf bite. She was honest, I expected her fear, and I expected for her to say anything for me to save her life but no she was honest and she was resigned to die even though she didn't want to. Even then I could see she was meant for something bigger." He bent forward, pressing his lips to the curve of her belly. "I wanted to show her the world, and she ended up giving it to me. I don't think I ever experienced real love until your mother. It wasn't easy. She fought me at every turn, but convincing her to give me a chance. The trust we built together there's nothing like it. Never giving up on your mother was the best decision I ever made."

"Well, I won't argue there," Caroline reached out, touching her hand to his stumble cheek. "Finally deciding to trust you and give in to what I felt for you was the best choice I've ever made."

"It's made my life infinitely better." Klaus buried his hand in her hair and kissed her.

Caroline moved her lips against his as he sipped from her mouth like a man dying of thirst.

She buried her hands in his hair, pulling him closer. "It scares me sometimes to think about if I never gave in to my heart and continue to lie to myself about how I felt about you. I can't imagine still being in Mystic Falls not mattering to someone the way I matter to you."

"No matter where you are, you matter." Klaus cupped her cheek with one hand and her stomach with the other, feeling one of the babies kick at his hand. "You have always mattered."

Caroline smiled. "No one would believe it if I told them how sweet you are."

Klaus grimaced. "My family is fully aware of how I am with you."

Caroline smiled widely, snuggling up into his side and laying her head on his chest.

Klaus smoothed his hands up and down her back as she snuggled back into him, rubbing one hand over her stomach tenderly and whispering until she was back to sleep.

He carefully moved from beside back to his chair, picking up his discarded sketchpad to finish, sketching the most beautiful sight he ever laid eyes on. Caroline sleeps with her hand resting over the curve of her stomach. A natural instinct to protect their child.

Klaus devoted his full attention to sketching Caroline.

He wanted to capture the way she glowed, the way she shined, the way she curved her hand protectively around her stomach, as if she was trying to shield their children from the world.

Klaus paused as Caroline curved in on herself, a draft of light shining in from the window making her look almost ethereal.

He couldn't take his eyes off her. She was so damn captivating. So beautiful.

Seeing her like this he couldn't wait to see holding their children in her eyes, couldn't wait see if they would have her smile or her eyes. Couldn't wait to see if they were just as beautiful as their mother.

He imagined the first time he would be able to sketch his family. Once he started, there was no way he would sketch anything else again.

He couldn't wait for the future that awaited him and Caroline and their new family.
