Authors note: happy new year!

Chapter 11 comforting family

It was late on New Year's Eve, and area 51 was quiet. Only a soldier passed by here and there.

Optimus sat silently in dragon form on the roof of an empty aircraft hangar watching fireworks go off in towns in the distance. The venom had almost made him snap earlier in the day, so he figured some time alone would help.

Optimus sighed. This whole dragon thing was just so stressful. He was about to zone out when he felt a tap on his tail. He turned around and saw arcee. She carefully grabbed his tail, which he used to pull her up on the roof.

Arcee sat next to Optimus and sighed. "Is everything alright?" Optimus diverted his attention back to the fireworks. "it's ok. I understand." she smiled softly and watched the colorful explosions in the distance.

"Hey Optimus?" arcee whispered. The prime grunted in response. "You remember the first-time bumblebee saw fireworks?" Optimus briefly glanced down at arcee and smiled. "I'll never forget it. I've never seen him so happy." arcee chuckled. "can't really blame him. They are so beautiful."

The two autobots sat in silence when there was a sudden group of screams coming from their base. Optimus grabbed arcee, threw her on his back, and bolted. Arcee had never seen Optimus run so fast. Upon arrival the prime fluttered his wings and skidded to a stop. Arcee jumped down as Optimus transformed and shouted, "what's going on? Is everyone alright?"

Then jack came running out of the base screaming, "Shes got a candle! Mikos got a roman candle!" the children ran around laughing trying to avoid Mikos 'weapon'. arcee breathed a sigh of relief. She turned around to see Optimus back in dragon form, headed toward one of the runways. "Optimus, wait up!" she shouted.

"Where are you going?" arcee asked. Optimus sighed, "no better time to practice flying since there's nothing else to do." arcee noticed how sad Optimus looked. "Can I come?" she mumbled. Optimus nodded and smiled.

After an hour of trying, the prime had barely been able to glide a few feet above the ground. Arcee, who was watching nearby, caught a glimpse of a green light in the distance. "What was that?" she said. Judging by the look on Optimus' face he had seen it too. Tucking his wings to his side, he trotted over to arcee. He motioned for her to climb on his back, arcee hesitated, but did as asked.

Optimus bounded off in the direction of the light, hoping it was just a rouge firework. After about 20 minutes of searching the area, the two bots couldn't find anything. They started to head back to base when a familiar voice chimed, "wouldn't using those wings be more efficient?" Optimus wheeled around to see his biggest enemy standing behind him.

"Megatron!"
