Author's Note: Some of you have inquired about the setting of the story. It's a different universe, same souls, different names, some choices are the same and others have been different. Helena= Prue, Astrid=Piper and Laura=Phoebe. I thought it would be interesting to see how things may have stayed the same and may have changed just from one or two different decisions whether by the sisters or their , they don't have the same exact bodies.
Life went on for the Bennet sisters.
Helena took over the museum that had been created just fifty years earlier by her great-grandmother, Melinda Johnson, to showcase the rich history of Nahanten and the women that built a community there. It wasn't her long term plan, but it would do until her sisters were independent and Helena could finally focus on herself.
Laura took over the roadhouse which was more of a local tavern, and so she renamed it and set about renovating the space. She managed the renovation and overhauling the menu, adding outside seating and turning it into more of a family friendly cafe. The somewhat meek middle sister really grew into a business woman and a manager, making her vision a reality and earning the respect of her staff.
The older two spent their lunches together and often met up at the tavern with Laura for dinner. Laura, finished up her last two years of high school at the local school and became somewhat famous on the island. The youngest Bennet sister definitely had the heart of a rebel like the women that had formed their village more than three centuries ago when they fled Salem for a safe haven.
In fact, Laura continued to make more of a commotion by holding protests at school, hosting events in the town square for fellow students and organizing the occasional party or two. Helena and Astrid learned to work with her in order to keep her out of trouble, as the sheriff and several other councilmen had been agitated with her attempts to help the town get back in touch with its history. For an island village that had been formed as an escape for witches and other women escaping persecution, the modern day community was very conservative. Any and all efforts to stay in touch with their history had stemmed from the Johnson family and their investment in the local economy, like the museum and its gift shop, and now Laura's pursuits.
In the two years since they had moved back into the family estate, the sisters had gotten to know one another and were still working to create their family, but one thing was for sure; they were friends.
Which is why, as she weaved in between tables to where Astrid and Laura were laughing and talking, Helena struggled to shift into her position as eldest sister and leader of their family.
Laura was one week from graduation and as of yet hadn't discussed her plans for her future. The past four months had been spent carefully dodging any questions about college or what she was going to do after graduation. Now, pulling out a chair, Helena sat and swept her red hair over her shoulder as she prepared for what she hoped would not become a showdown.
"What's that face for?" Laura asked.
"We have something very important to discuss." Pausing, she took a deep breath and glanced back and forth between her sisters. "After we moved back here, we made some choices about the state of our family and how we wanted our family to be. I took over the museum, Laura has been managing the tavern, and you stayed on the island to finish out high school."
"No history lesson needed, Lena. We were both here," Laura said all sassy and popped a fry into her mouth.
"Sshhh," Astrid nudged her. "Go on, Lenny."
"You have a week until graduation and then, as far as I know, you don't have any plans. What's going on?"
"God, in a rush to get rid of me?" Laura took a swig of her drink and began pushing food around on her plate.
"You know it's not like that. But you're our baby sister and you're growing up. College or trade school is typically a part of that process. You must have been thinking of something. What are your plans?"
"I've applied to some schools but I don't really know what I want to do. I mean, I just turned 18, do I have to know?"
"No," Astrid said. "But you do need to be doing something to figure it out. What do you want to do?"
"I don't want to leave the island," she looked up, teary eyed. "I just got a family. I don't want to leave."
Astrid and Lena leaned in and hugged her.
"You know, leaving the island doesn't mean we're not a family," Lena said, brushing Laura's hair. "We're always going to be here."
"You don't get it," Laura began to cry and wiped her tears with the back of her hands. "I don't have memories of mom or dad, and the only adults that ever had anything to do with me were teachers and nannies. I've never had a family before. What happens if I leave and something happens? I don't want to be alone again."
"You're never going to be alone," Astrid assured her. "Laua, you have the biggest heart of anyone I've ever known. You stick up for the underdog and you stick to your guns. Going away to college doesn't mean losing us. It just means you get the chance to be yourself and meet the people who are going to be your friends for the rest of your life."
"You never went to college," Laura said. "I could stay here, get a job."
"I knew what I wanted to do. Cooking has always been my passion and I was fortunate enough to get the necessary training while I was in school. But you have a chance to go and learn about the world and figure out what you want your place to be."
"We'll be here," Lena said. "You'll come home on breaks and we'll come up once a month on weekends. But you have so much potential and you're so smart, Laura. And whatever it is you decide to do with your future, I know you'll come home and share those gifts with the whole island."
"We're always going to be your sisters," Astrid added. "But it's okay for you to take time to be on your own and figure things out. Besides, you'll never really be alone."
"I was accepted to a couple of schools," Laura admitted. "One in California, a couple in New York. The one I really like is in Boston."
"See! So close," Lena said.
"I could focus on my general education credits and give myself some time to figure out what I want to study for my major."
"It sounds like a plan. When is the deadline?"
"It already passed," Laura said and could see her older sisters panic. "Guess it's a good thing I already turned in my deposit."
"Oh!"
"You're gonna get it," Astrid said and pinched her while Lena shoved her.
The three sisters laughed and went on with their dinner.
