Leo & Calypso: A New Beginning
The sun blazed over Ogygia, casting golden reflections across the endless ocean. Leo Valdez wiped the sweat from his forehead, his curls already singed at the edges from working under Festus' wing. "Alright, big guy, one more adjustment, and you'll be purring like a kitten. A giant, fire-breathing, metal kitten."
Calypso smirked from where she sat, sorting through a pile of mechanical parts. "You've been saying that for days, Leo."
Leo shot her a grin. "Yeah, but this time, I really mean it." He twisted a wrench, and Festus let out a metallic huff, steam escaping from his joints. The dragon's ruby eyes flickered, then flared to life. With a triumphant shout, Leo jumped up. "Boom! Told ya!"
Calypso rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. "Well done, hero," she teased, standing and brushing off her tunic. "Now, let's see if we can finally leave this island."
It took another two days to fine-tune Festus, stockpile supplies, and argue over what should come with them. Leo insisted on bringing every last scrap of metal he could find, while Calypso wanted to pack jars of her homegrown preserves.
"Leo, I'm not leaving without my blackberry jam," she warned.
Leo sighed, shoving a rusted piece of Celestial Bronze into his tool belt. "Fine. But if we crash because of jam weight, I get to say 'I told you so.'"
With a dramatic whoosh, Festus spread his wings, and together, they soared into the sky. Ogygia faded beneath them, a dream they had finally woken up from.
As they flew over the ocean, Calypso clung to Leo's waist, her hair whipping in the wind. "You're sure about this?" she murmured.
Leo squeezed her hand. "Nah, but when has that ever stopped me?"
Instead of returning to Camp Half-Blood—or anywhere their friends would expect—they settled in a tiny town on the outskirts of nowhere. There, they set up Leo & Calypso's Garage: Auto Repair & Mechanical Monsters Fresh Fruits & Veggies Cider & Stew.
Leo built the shop from the ground up, working for 3G whole days with no food or water unless Calypso insisted. The sign out front gleamed in bronze letters:
LEO & CALYPSO'S GARAGE
Auto Repair & Mechanical Monsters
Fresh Fruits & Veggies
Cider & Stew
Most days, Leo could be found covered in grease, fixing cars and crafting ridiculous, fire-breathing machines that probably shouldn't exist. "People are gonna love these," he'd say.
Calypso, on the other hand, spent her time growing an enchanting garden, selling fresh produce, and brewing cider and stew that made people feel like they'd been hugged by magic itself.
Their first customer, a weary traveler with a busted truck, stared in confusion at their sign. "So… do you guys fix cars, or—"
"Yes," Leo said, wiping his hands on his overalls.
"And… mechanical monsters?"
"Also yes."
The man glanced at Calypso. "And you sell… fruit?"
Calypso crossed her arms. "Take it or leave it."
The man considered, then nodded. "Alright. Fix my truck. And, uh… I'll take some cider too."
They never told anyone they were back. Not at first. Not because they didn't miss their friends, but because for once, they had something that was entirely theirs.
At night, they sat on the roof of the garage, sipping cider under the stars. Festus curled up beside them, letting out small puffs of smoke.
Leo draped an arm around Calypso's shoulders. "Not bad for a guy who crashed and burned, huh?"
She leaned and kissed him. "Not bad at all."
And for the first time in a long time, they were exactly where they wanted to be.
