Waking up in the hospital, Emily was ready to get home. No one to wake her up in the middle of the night, no one to poke her for more blood, and no more random ultrasounds. Although she was very grateful for them making sure that her baby was okay but she just wanted to be left alone. She looked over to her left and saw Aaron uncomfortably sleeping on the chair that was on her side. She was about to wake him when another nurse came in.
Waking up, he sat up and tried to focus as much as he could, he didn't want to miss anything.
"Good Morning Emily."
"Good Morning Jessica, how are you?"
"I'm doing good. Do you have to use the restroom yet?"
"No not yet. "
"Okay, Breakfast should be on it's way soon, but don't hesitate to call me if you need anything before that."
"Thanks Jessica. "
After the nurse left. Emily looked over back at him and made eye contact.
"Aaron, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"What's going to happen when I get out of here? I mean, with us? When I get home? Is everything going to go back to what they've been?"
"Emily.. I "
"You're upset with me and you have every right to be but... " he cut her off
"Emily, I'm not upset with you. I'm just... I'm just hurt. I just thought that we were on the same page but I apparently was wrong and that's okay. I just needed some time and I'm grateful you let me have that... again but now you need me. When you get home, life is going to look different. You will be on bedrest with limited movement until the baby is born. I will be here for you in any way that I could and If not me, there's always Marissa, Penelope, or JJ. I know one of them would be more than happy to help you." He grabbed her hand and smiled
She smiled at him back.
"Thank You. " After a few minutes, the nurse came back with some breakfast and to help Emily into the bathroom to brush her teeth, comb her hair, amongst other things.
With Emily in the bathroom, Aaron pulled out his phone and saw that he had a few messages from Rossi. Putting his phone up to his ear, he began to listen to Rossi's messages
'Hey Hotch, just wanted to check in on how Emily is doing. We caught the Unsub and were are heading to the airport. We should be there in a few hours. Give me a call when you get a chance.'
Walking out of the room and into the waiting room, Hotch dialed his number and waited for an answer.
"Aaron?"
"Dave, hey."
"How's Emily.?"
"Better. I think she gets to go home later today. I'll fill you in more when you get back."
"okay sounds good."
"Are you guys back yet?"
"The flight is almost over. We should be landing in an hour or so."
"okay. I'll see you then Rossi."
"okay Bye. "
Back on the Jet, after hanging up, Rossi looked up and made eye contact with JJ. He could tell that JJ was worried about Emily. He also felt that since the case was over, the team had needed to know.
"Guys. We need to talk." Rossi said
"Everything okay?" Reid asked
"Wednesday Morning there was a situation."
"What kind of a situation." Morgan asked
" Emily was sent to the Hospital."
"What Why?"
"What she thought were Braxton hicks contractions, were in fact real contractions and then..."
"She started bleeding. Her and the baby are doing okay now. She is still in the hospital but it expected to be released today or tomorrow. She is now on complete bedrest." JJ cut him off and finished telling the team.
"Is that what you were talking to Garcia about?" Morgan asked
"Yes." JJ said
"Why didn't you tell us before?" Reid asked
"We needed you focused. We knew that if you knew, your head wouldn't be on the case. Emily is where she needs to be and she and the baby are going to be okay."
"Is that where Hotch left too?" Morgan asked
"No, he needed to take care of something else. He was already on the plane when he got wind of this news." Rossi hated lying to them, but he knew that he had too to protect Emily and Aaron. He knew that they didn't want their secret out yet and Rossi respected that. Although he knew that it would come crumbling down one way or another.
"As long as she and the baby are okay" Morgan stated
"They are ... and she knows that you guys are going to want to see her when we land. Natalia and Marissa should be there soon, but she will be happy to see you guys." JJ said with a smile.
Back at the hospital:
"Mommy are you okay?" Natalia asked when she saw her mother sitting in the hospital bed
"I'm okay baby. "
"Are you sure?"
"I am, I get to come home today Talia. "
Aaron just sat back and watched the little girl and her mother. He felt lucky, lucky enough for his baby to have Emily as his or her mother. They were so lucky.
"You do?"
"I do but when I get home, things are going to look a little different okay?"
"What does that mean?"
"It means that when I come home, I can't do any of the same things I used to do with you. "
"Like ever?" she lifted her eye brow to her mother, looking exactly like her father, causing Emily to laugh.
"No not forever. It's just until the baby is born. Just a few weeks. "
"You can still celebrate Halloween with me though right mommy?"
"Im afraid not baby, I'll be home in bed. But Marissa can go with you and then you can come back and we can go through your candy."
"It's not going to be the same though mommy."
"I know baby but..." she was cut off
"Would it be better if Jack was there with you?"
The little girl nodded.
"Great! Jack and I will come with you trick or treating and then we can come back to Mommy."
"Okay." she said sadly.
Emily ran her hand through her daughter's hair and gave her a sad smile. Emily was about to say something when the doctor came in.
"Good Morning Emily."
"Good Morning Dr. Peterson. This is my daughter Natalia and our Nanny Marissa."
"Nice to meet you both." The doctor stated as he shook Marissa's hand.
"You as well." Marissa stated.
"So Emily. I have some good news. ' Emily perked up.' The good news is that your placenta hasn't moved. It remains in the same place as when you arrived. Although it is a little more detached than we originally had thought it was. But considering how far along you are, Im okay to send you home but as long as you promise to stay on bedrest. "
"I'll make sure of it." Marissa stated
"Good. Now, I also want you to come in for weekly appointment, and if you feel something is wrong, please don't hesitate to come back. "
"I will. I promise. There is nothing more important than my babies."
"The nurse will come back with discharge papers in a little while. We just want to monitor you and baby just a little bit more."
"Okay. Thank You Dr. Peterson. "
He smiled at her and walked out.
Aaron was grateful that Emily and the baby are healthy but something bothered him. He would be lying if he said that he wasn't jealous that he wouldn't be the main one to be helping her out. He should be though right? It is his baby and he has every right to be there, but everything was a secret. He knew that Rossi and Marissa knew but no one else did. Knowing what risk he would be taking if everyone knew, but that's thing, he didn't want it to be a secret anymore. He wanted people to know that he was the father. He also knew that Emily felt different and for that, he wouldn't tell anyone the truth without Emily agreeing first.
After a couple of hours, Marissa and Natalia left to get everything ready for Emily when she was ready to come home. Hotch had went down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. Emily was just about to fall asleep when she heard a knock at the door. Opening her eyes, she saw the team. Smiling at them, they all followed JJ into the room.
"Hey Mama. How you feeling?" Morgan asked
"Tired and wanting to go home. You?"
"I can say the same but in a little bit. I had to come and see you."
She smiled at him.
"You're going home today?" JJ asked
"Yeah. Shortly I hope. "
"Everything okay with the baby?" Rossi asked
"Yeah. Baby and I are perfectly healthy for now. "
"Bedrest for the remainder of the pregnancy huh?" Reid asked
"Yeah it sucks but If It means keeping the baby safe, I'll almost do anything."
With the team chatting some more, Hotch had come back to find the room full. Knowing that the team didn't know that he was there, he turned back around and headed back for the cafeteria. Looking around, Rossi hadn't seen Hotch. Seeing that he should have been there, he pulled out his phone and sent him a text.
With everything in great timing, the nurse had stopped in with the discharge papers. With the team leaving the room, JJ, Morgan, and Reid decided to head home, get changed, and get some rest. Rossi on the other hand, pulled his phone back out when he felt his phone vibrate. Looking down at the message, he walked out of the room and headed down for the cafeteria.
Finally getting out of the elevator, Rossi saw Hotch sitting at the table across the room. Walking over to him, he sat down with Hotch right across from him.
"Hey, how are you doing?"
"Tired. Didn't get much sleep last night, Nurses kept coming in every couple of hours. "
"I'm sure you won't be getting any more sleep than you are now in the next few weeks. You are going to be helping her right?"
"I want to Dave, But I know how the team is. They are going to want to come and help. I appreciate that and I know Emily does too, but this is our baby and I hate that no one knows."
"Have you talked to Emily about telling people?"
"We have but she doesn't want to, she can't shake out the idea that it's going to ruin both of our careers. "
"Do you need me to talk to her?"
"No Dave but thanks. I think I'm going to go and check on her. I'm assuming the team is gone."
"Yeah, everyone left when the nurses came in. They are getting ready to discharge her."
"Thanks Dave."
"Aaron, Just talk to her. Let her know how you feel. "
"I did that once Dave and it didn't go the way that I thought it would. So i'm going to pass on that. I appreciate the advice though." He gave him a sad smile and headed back towards the elevator.
Arriving back on her floor, he walked into the room when they were getting Emily up and into a wheel chair.
"Ahh there you are, we're just thinking that you left." One of the nurses said
"No I was just downstairs in the cafeteria. "
"Okay. So Emily's got all of the paperwork in her bag with all of the instructions. Emily also knows what's she supposed to do and not to do. As long as she follows these instructions, the next time we should see you next is when you give birth."
"Thank You Carissa. I appreciate all of your help."
"No problem Emily. We shall see you when this little one is ready."
Emily nodded. Aaron walked behind her and began pushing the wheelchair out into the hallway. Walking past the check in desk, Aaron stopped when he heard his name being called. He turned around and saw a woman leaning over the desk. Backing up, he made eye contact with her and stopped when he was close enough.
"Hi sorry guys! I just wanted to catch you before you left. Theres a few signatures on here that we need. "
"Alright." Aaron said
"Okay Aaron, you are dad correct?"
"Yes." He nodded while grabbing the clip board and grabbing a pen
"Now what is this for?" Emily asked
"Just some insurance stuff since he is the baby's father"
"Oh.. okay." Emily stated, as Aaron was signing the paper, Emily looked down at her phone that was sitting in her lap. Seeing that JJ and Penelope wanted to make her dinner that night, she took a deep breath. She was grateful for her friends, she really was but she just wished that she could have a quiet night with her, Natalia, and Marissa or Hotch, she still wasn't sure yet. Overall she just wanted to go home. She wanted to get into her own bed and be in her own pajamas and take a nice hot shower.
As they were leaving, Emily called Marissa and let her know that they were on their way home. As Hotch had wheeled Emily out the hospital, they hadn't noticed the woman that had walked in. The woman had just watched them, and briefly had heard what was said. Now with what she was seeing and hearing, her suspicions were no longer suspicions, she just found out the truth. She just wished that Emily hadn't lied to her.
JJ had turned around and pretended to walk further down the hallway so they wouldn't have seen her. JJ originally came back to see if Emily needed any help leaving because she wasn't answering any of her calls, seeing her and Hotch, she realized that she had the help that she needed.
Making sure that they were gone, JJ walked back out and headed to her car.
The car ride home was a little awkward. Driving back to her place, Aaron would occasionally look over and find Emily just staring out the window. The drive wasn't long but it felt as if it took forever.
"Where's your head at Emily?" Aaron finally asked
"I'm just nervous. Don't get me wrong, I love to be home and no one poking me at 3 am but what if something goes wrong? What if something happens and I don't know it? What if.."
"Emily, You're going to be fine, nothing is going to happen."
"How do you know that?"
"Because.. they wouldn't have let you leave if they knew that some was wrong. You heard Dr. Peterson, everything looks great and the baby looks healthy. It's just a few more weeks."
"I know, I'm just scared that's all."
"I know you are but you are not alone. Okay? There's someone always here for you and I'm going to be with you as much as I can, or as much as you'll allow me too."
"Thank you... I don't deserve you after everything.."
With his eyes on the road, he smiled slightly. The rest of the drive was silent.
Arriving home, Aaron parked the car, and got out heading for the trunk. Pulling out the wheelchair, he walked over and opened the car door on Emily's side.
"i hate this." she took one step out of the car and sat into the wheelchair.
"I know you do Em. But this is how it's going to be for a little while."
"I know but I still hate it."
Laughing, he closed the car door and headed into the building.
Finally making it up to her apartment, Emily was welcomed with excitement. The door had swung open before she could even put the key in.
"Mommy!"
"Hi baby. I missed you!"
"Careful Talia, remembered what we talked about." Marissa stated and she helped Natalia onto Emily's lap.
Emily smiled and held her daughter close. After a few minutes, Natalia slid off of her mother's lap. Aaron pushed Emily into the living room. She slowly managed to get up and sit onto the couch.
"Did you want any water?" Marissa asked
"Yeah, I would love some. Thank you."
"I got it." Aaron said as he walked into the kitchen. Coming back he handed her a cup of water, Taking a sip and setting it on the coffee table, all Emily wanted to do was sleep. She hasn't gotten a lot of sleep in the last couple of days. Her body was exhausted.
Slowly lying on her side, her eyes closed and she fell into a deep slumber. Aaron noticed that she had fallen asleep. Looking down at the time, he wanted to go and spend some time with Jack also. He stood up and looked over at Marissa,
"I know she's asleep now, But I need to go see my son. Would you be okay If i left?"
"Yeah I got it from here. She's taking a nap and Natalia is finishing up her homework."
"Please call me if you need anything. I'll be back later."
"I will. Thanks Aaron."
He gave her a smile before walking out of the door.
A few hours later, Emily was starting to wake when she heard the faint sound of her daughter laughing. Sitting up the best that she could, she looked around the room. Natalia was sitting at the table eating dinner and Marissa was in the kitchen cleaning up. She grabbed her glass of water that was on the table and took a sip. Placing her water back down on the table, the cup hit the edge and fell over. Emily gasped when she felt the water on her toes. Marissa came running over when she heard the glass hit the floor.
"Hey are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry Marissa, I went to go and put the cup down and it hit the edge.. I'm."
"Hey. Emily, it's okay. Accidents happen. Let me get a towel."
Emily placed both of her hands on her heard and her elbows on her legs. She began to cry. When Marissa came back, she placed the towel on the floor and looked over at Emily.
"Hey Em, it's okay. It's just water."
"I know. I'm just overwhelmed. I.."
"I know, but that's what I'm here for. Let me help you. "
Cleaning up the water, there was a knock at the door. Marissa got up and Natalia followed her.
"Jack!" Natalia screamed. "Come on, come play." Natalia said as she pulled Jack into the house and they both ran upstairs.
Aaron followed in and took his jacket off, setting in on the hook.
"Is she awake?"
"Yeah, she just got up. " Aaron nodded and headed back over to Emily. Seeing her, she looked even more tired that before he nap if that was possible. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying.
"Hey, are you doing okay Em?"
"Yeah, I just spilled some water." He looked confused and gave a look over to Marissa. She mouthed, "she's overwhelmed." to him. Now somewhat of a more understanding, he looked back over to her.
"Is there anything you need me to do Em? "
"I just want my bed, if i'm being honest. I just want to sleep, and to take a shower, and to pee " She picked up her head and made eye contact with him once again.
"Okay... I can help you with one of those things. " he said giving her a slight smile.
"But...I can't go up the stairs."
"Come on Em. Let me help you."
He helped her up and then tried carrying her bridal style. Her looking over at him and slightly objecting. He gave her another look.
"Emily. Let me help you. "
"Fine. " She stated and he carried her all the way up the stairs and into her bedroom. A few minutes later, Marissa followed and helped Emily out with her shower. There was never a moment in her life where she thought that she would need someone to help her with a shower, but there she was. She didn't care though, she was just happy to be taking shower.
Coming out of the shower, she placed clean pajamas on and started to brush her hair. Finally sitting down in bed, she noticed that she had all of her essential on her nightstand. Her water bottle, her phone charger, a book, and her laptop. All in arms reach.
She then heard a knock on her bedroom door,
'come in.' She stated as she got more comfortable in bed.
"Hey. Just wanted to check to see how you are doing."
"Much better."
"Yeah I can tell. You look a lot happier."
"Yeah sorry about that, I kind of just."
"Hey I know. but uh, i just got off the phone with JJ and Garcia. I knew they wanted to bring you dinner tonight but I convinced them to come tomorrow instead."
"Thank You. I was so not interested in company tonight. "
"I figured. So Marissa is going to bring you some dinner soon. I know you probably aren't hungry but just in case. I'm going to let the kids play a little while longer and then I can take Jack home."
"Stay as long as you'd like. I don't mind the kids playing together." she said
He looked around the room, it felt as if no time had changed. It had remained the same since he was in there months ago. Although, he knew Emily wasn't one for change, but it was strange being in that room. He remembered waking up, he remembered looking at her one more time while she was sleeping and then leaving. He started to get uncomfortable. Emily though picked up on that. She noticed the change in his body language.
"Are you okay?" She asked looking at him in the eyes.
"Yeah, I just... it's just been the first time i've been in here since that night."
"Ahh I see. I see how that can be a little awkward."
"Yeah but it's okay. I'll get over it." she giggled
"Yeah, We're going to be spending a lot of time here, I suppose." She adjusted her pillow behind her and threw the blanket over her lap.
With the awkward silence, he looked at her and stood.
"I'm going to check on the kids and then help Marissa out."
"Aaron... I... know that things have been rocky between us lately and with this being what it is, things are about to get more complicated. "
"Yeah but.."
"What I'm trying to say is that, I've done a lot of thinking lately and i think that before things get too complicated, I think we need to tell the team.. the truth. I can't keep this a secret anymore and honestly, I don't want to keep this a secret anymore. I was wrong before."
"Did Rossi talk to you?"
"What? No. Why? Does Rossi know?"
"Yeah, he came up to me the other day and asked what was wrong between us. I didn't tell him anything but he does know the baby is mine."
"Okay. Well I kind of figured that he would be the first one to figure it out. "
"What changed your mind? You were so adamant about keeping it a secret."
"The circumstances changed my mind."
"Ahh. I see. Well I appreciate that Em."
She smiled at him.
"I'm going to go and check on your dinner. I'll be back."
She nodded and she watched him walk out of the room. Emily slid farther into the bed and covered her face with her hands. She knew lying to him was wrong, well she technically didn't lie, she wanted the team to know but not now. Truth is, she was scared. Scared of how the team would react, scared of them hating here, scared of JJ being mad at her lying to her. She knew that she had to tell them to explain why Hotch was around so much more.
She also hated what she was doing. She wanted to tell the team to benefit her more. She wanted him to herself. She had this attachment to him and she wanted to be around him all the time. She loved having him around and she wanted to keep her all to herself, well besides being on a case. She has never felt this way before, the feeling of Hotch being a sort of security blanket for her. He was her safety net and with him, she felt safe. She hated that, she's always been an independent woman and didn't need anyone to help her, but this for some reason was different. She felt like she needed him to help her survive.
She felt so wrong about not telling him the truth behind her wanting to tell the team but she knew that if she had told him the truth, he might just leave and she couldn't stand to watch him leave again.
The night ended, with both Natalia and Emily eating dinner in her bed. Although Emily wouldn't have normally allowed this but Natalia needed this just as much as she did. After dinner, Natalia asleep, Marissa sleeping in another room, and Aaron and Jack long gone, she turned out the light on her nightstand and cuddled into her pregnancy pillow and closed her eyes.
