Laura had gotten the best news she could ever get as she approached her career as a lawyer. Steve was helping her every night possible to help her pass the bar exam. The last few weeks, Laura, with senior attorney present, was presenting the facts in the court hearing for the defendants the law firm represented. She felt good about herself because she had won those last three court cases. It being her last week at the law firm, Wendy Parks and the other partners of the family lawfirm of Parks, Joels, and Williams, called Laura into their meeting room. Laura nerves were going crazy but she calmed herself down as she entered the room and when they asked her to take a seat. That is when Senior Attorney and partner Wendy Parks spoke to her. "Laura, these few months with you as our intern for pre law has been completely amazing with you. When we were picking the right person to intern with us, you were the only one that shot our interst. Your grades and hard work in school were astonishing. And you never doubted yourself when you first started and have impressed us to where after you pass the bar exam and graduate from law school we would like to hire you full time for the next two years."
Laura could not believe her ears as she was smiling big. "Really? I mean thank you. But I do have some concerns?" She began as nerves began to rise again.
"Laura if you are talking about your pregnancy and salary?" Wendy asked as all the partners looked at her. "We have already took that into consideration. That is why we are offering you twonyears with us. You will have full benefits as soon as you start and paid maternity leave for twelve weeks. As for salary you'll be making much more than our paid intern." Then Wendy wrote down a number and slid it to Laura. "This is what we can offer you the first year and hopefully an increase by your second year..."
Laura looked at the number and she was very pleased as the number was higher than usual for a first entry laywer. But she knew she would have to discuss this over with Steve because this was a big deal and she knew there other offers out there. One thing she could not resist though is the pay and all the benefits, more so on the maternity leave. Not many places in the state of Illinois offered paid maternity leave or none at all. Laura looked at the lawyers with a deadpan look as she was trying her hardest to be serious. "This is beyond a doubt this is a very tempting offer. But most of all I have to discuss this with my husband to make sure this is the right decision not only for my career but also beneficial in my personal life. My career is very important to me but so is my family I am starting to build."
"We understand that, talk to your husband and hopefully by Thursday we will here from you. We want to get you on the payroll as soon as possible. After your last law school final exam and you are finished with your bar exam, we want to hire you full time as my legal assistant." Wendy told her. "The pay will be the same as you were as an intern, but as soon as you hear back about your bar exam we will transfer you as first entry attorney."
Laura could not believe the news as it kept getting better. All her hard work was finally paying off. She might have passed on Harvard Law to live her in Chicago so Steve could finish his PHD but it seemd to be all worth it. Laura thanked them, then clocked out and headed to her Obgyn office to have her eighteen week checkup since she was not technically eighteen weeks on Saturday, but all next week she was busy taking her last school final and then would began taking two days to do the bar exam. Plus she and Steve could not wait for the ultrasound to see how big their baby was now and just maybe to tell what sex the baby was.
When she arrived to the doctors office, Laura saw Steve waiting in his new car. She was sad to see the Isetta go because Steve loved that car. But he found a family friendly car but still screamed Steve Urkel. 2002 gold Fiat Multipla of all mini vans. Well more like mini mini van.
Laura got out of her car, and walked over to her husband's and knocked on his window. Steve jumped slightly as it seemed he was just enjoying his "All About That Polka." Audiobook Laura got him for Valentine's day a few months back. This was probably his third time listening to it. He shut off his vehicle completely and got out. He hugged Laura and gave her quick peck on the lips, "I was just started the chapter of why the accordion is ao important to polka..." He said with a serious look.
"Aww poor you, now whats more important your audio book or our baby?" Laura asked giving him a straight dace look as she patted his arm.
"Of course our baby, but you know that is my favorite chapter of the audiobook..."He gave her a smile as he watched her roll her eyes.
"Okay my polka lovin husband, lets just get inside and see our baby... Oh by the way I have some amazing news." Laura told Steve everything as they walked in, signed in and waited until Laura was called back.
"Sweetums, thats amazing! It's offer that sets the bar high for those other law firms you have a job interviews on Thursday. Just remember I am here for moral support and whatever you decide I will have your back. Just like when I told you it was up to you what law school you wanted to attend. If was here in Chicago or you wanted to go to Harvard. Just like you want the best for me, I want the best for you and now our what is best for our family..." Steve gave her a smile as he put his hand on her pregnant belly and began to up it softly.
Laura leaned into her husband and kissed his lips. "You are amazing you know that? I could not have asked for a better husband." Then laid her head on his shoulder.
Steve scooted closer putting his free arm back behind her. He raised his eyebrows and looked at her with a serious face, "You love me don't you?"
Laura smiled and chuckled as Steve would say that many times in their life and would always make her roll her eyes but with a smile. She swatted his knee and sat up and looked at him. "Yes Steve Urkel I love you just maybe a little tiny itsy bit..." She loved joking with him.
He put up his hand like a stop sign from Laura's stomach as he was joking back "Stop right there woman, I'll take it. Laura Lee loves me and that's all that matters." Steve could not help but smile as he loved their silly banter and leaned into his wife as he could not resist to kiss her. He then but his hand back on her stomach as he was protecting not only his wife but their baby. Steve closed his eyes for a second to enjoy their closeness as Laura's head was once again resting on his shoulder. He almost did not want the moment to end but his excitement grew once the nurse called back Laura's name.
Laura had to drink a lot of water today for her ultrasound and glad it was the first thing that was done. She never had to use the restroom so bad in her life. She was glad Steve was there to distract her. As the technician was setting up, Laura laid back as she tried her best to relax. Steve sat next to her and held her hand as they were both excited to see how big their baby had grown, hoping the baby was healthy, and fingers crossed to tell what the sex of the baby was.
The machine turned on, jelly was applied to Laura's bare stomach and before the couple knew it their was a little more developed baby on the screen. Tears filled their eyes as they began to hear the heartbeat at 150 and see their baby's head, arms, hands, legs and feet.
Then the technician finally asked them, "Would you two like to know the gender of your baby if he or she is not too shy?" Of course in unison they said yes. She moved the wand around and soon found what they were looking for. Their baby was not shy at all, "If you see right there, well your baby is a boy. There is no denying that." The technician told them.
Steve pressed his forehead to Laura's now tears coming down his cheek, which made Laura's tears do the same. "We are going to have a son..." He said quietly but was filled with pure joy.
"I know." Is all Laura could say because she was just happy just knowing. She could not wait now to go shopping for little boy stuff and find cute outfits to match his daddy. She would have just been as happy of the baby was a girl too but she could not wait for a little boy who looked like his daddy running around.
The rest of the appointment went great just like the first two. The baby was growing like he was supposed to and Laura was doing great. As soon as they both arrived home they rushed to their bedroom and made love like crazy reat of the evening and night with a break of them eating leftovers for dinner.
