Chapter 2: Doubt in the Fire
The Shinra building loomed in the distance, a monument to power and oppression. Sephiroth and Cloud walked side by side towards it, each absorbed in their own thoughts. Upon reaching the entrance of the building, the general and the young SOLDIER briefly parted to greet the security guards, who instinctively recognized them as high-ranking members of Shinra. After passing through the access door, they headed straight for the elevator.
— What are you going to tell Angeal? —Sephiroth asked in a calm but expectant voice—. That you found Aerith involved in the deaths of those civilians?
Cloud shrugged, his expression serious.
— I'm not sure. We haven't finished analyzing the data yet. But I do think we need to consider the possibility that Shinra made a mistake, that the cleanup of Sector 5 went wrong for reasons that are unclear.
The elevator took them to an upper floor of the building, where Angeal Hewley's office was located. Upon arriving, Sephiroth knocked on the door with a sharp knock, announcing his presence. Angeal greeted them with a friendly expression on his face, although his gaze was filled with concern.
— Welcome. Do you have any important news to share?
Sephiroth nodded, maintaining an upright and confident posture.
— Yes, Angeal. Our findings in Sector 5 suggest that Aerith may be involved in the deaths of those civilians.
Cloud stepped forward, keen to present his point of view.
— I'm not sure about that, Angeal. I think we need to investigate further before jumping to conclusions.
The blond-haired youth's mentor was silent for a moment, pondering what had just been revealed. Then, he nodded his head in approval at Cloud.
— Good judgment, Cloud. Sephiroth, what do you think? Do you think we should keep a special watch on Aerith?
Sephiroth did not hesitate.
— That's right. Considering the political implications of this situation, it is essential to keep a close watch on her.
Angeal nodded, his lips forming a thin line.
— Understood. I will leave some men to cover their movements.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, interrupting the conversation. Angeal called out,
— Come in!
The door opened and a soldier rushed in, his face tense with anxiety.
— Mr. Angeal, we have a problem. We have detected suspicious activity near the headquarters. It seems that some group is trying to infiltrate the complex.
Angeal jumped to his feet, his expression stern.
— How many are there? Do you have an ID on who they are?
The soldier shook his head.
— I can't give you specific names, we haven't been able to identify anyone so far.
Sephiroth leaned forward, his voice calm but laced with suspicion.
— Don't you think it could have something to do with the Cetra, Angeal? Remember our talk about Sector 5. Unless they are deserting soldiers, these people would have reasons to want to sabotage our objectives in that area.
Angeal Hewley narrowed his eyes, processing the information.
— Perhaps you are right, Sephiroth. We will reinforce security immediately and isolate any possible access.
While Angeal gave orders to the infantry to fortify the headquarters, Sephiroth approached the office window and opened it, letting the night breeze enter with a soft whisper. The city of Midgar spread out below him and a set of lights and shadows could be seen.
— Cloud, why don't you take it upon yourself to find out who these intruders are? It may have a connection with the Cetra.
Cloud nodded.
— Alright, Sephiroth. I will return with results soon.
Sephiroth looked at Cloud upon hearing his answer. The young SOLDIER looked at the general making their gazes meet. For a moment, both remained silent, a wall of indecisive emotions looming between them.
Cloud walked out of the office at a quick pace, his heart beating with energy. As he rode down the elevator in the building, his mind focused on finding the intruders. But he also felt a strange tingling in his chest, a fleeting memory of the feeling of looking at Sephiroth.
Reaching the entrance, he exited the building and paused for a moment, staring out into the night that enveloped him. Then, he took a side path into the less-lit areas of the Shinra military complex, searching for clues about the group that had infiltrated it. As he walked forward, he mentally told himself not to let his feelings for Sephiroth distract him from his work.
After traversing several miles of the halls and tunnels beneath the military complex, Cloud finally located the group of intruders. They were in an abandoned storage room, surrounded by boxes and old equipment. Seeing the young SOLDIER, they stood on alert, their weapons ready to strike.
— Stop! —Cloud ordered, raising his sword—. I am a SOLDIER of Shinra. Who are you and what are you looking for here?
The leader of the group, a man wearing a hood, stepped forward, smiling wryly.
—We are only here looking for the truth, Cloud. The same truth that Shinra wants to hide.
Cloud frowned, intrigued by how they knew his name.
— How do you know who I am? And what truth is it that you think Shinra is hiding?
The leader of the intruders, a robust man under the hood, responded with a harsh laugh.
— It is not difficult to follow the trail of a famous SOLDIER like you, Cloud. Furthermore, we have gathered enough reports and testimonies to know what is really going on here within Shinra.
— What reports? —Cloud insisted, wanting to know more—. And what is the truth that you think Shinra is hiding?
The leader of the intruders removed his hood, revealing a round face and blond hair, with a neat beard. He introduced himself with an expansive gesture.
— My name is Glenn Lodbrok. My group and I have been investigating Shinra's operations and have found solid evidence of abuses against the civilian population, including the slaughter in Sector 5.
— Abuses? —Cloud repeated, his voice heavy with distrust—. What kind of abuses?
Glenn smiled, as if enjoying Cloud's suspicion.
— Oh, ugly things, my friend. Like the use of toxic materials in slum clearance, the exploitation of natural resources, and the suppression of any opposition.
Cloud was silent for a moment, processing the information. It was hard to believe that Shinra, an organization that had always presented itself as a defender of society, was involved in something so dark.
— Where do they have that evidence? —he finally asked, determined to see if the man was telling the truth—.
Glenn gestured to the side, where one of his companions was going through a box of files.
—It's all here, Cloud. Documents, testimonies, recordings... Everything you need to understand the true nature of Shinra.
The young SOLDIER approached the box, his gloved fingers brushing over the documents in curiosity. But just as he was about to open the first folder, a crash could be heard from deep within the military complex.
A second later, the room began to shake violently. Lights flickered and drawers and tools fell to the floor, causing a deafening noise. Some of the members of the rebel group ducked down, protecting their heads.
— Shinra has launched an attack! —Glenn shouted, his voice filled with urgency—. We must flee from here right now.
Cloud quickly prepared himself, holding his sword firmly. His mind raced to think that perhaps this was what Shinra had wanted, distracting them with an ambush while he continued his investigation.
— We must go! —he exclaimed, pointing to the exit—.
The group quickly gathered together, picking up the box and putting away the vital documentation as Glenn led them towards the exit. Cloud brought up the rear, his back stiff and his eyes watchful, ready to face any danger that might come his way.
As they reached the exit, they saw that a unit of armed troops was forming a barricade. Glenn growled in frustration.
— Damn, they've already arrived it's too late. We can't take them all on!
Suddenly, the blond-haired young man had an idea. He looked at Glenn with determination.
— You escape with your men. I will stay and do my best to buy them time to escape.
Glenn seemed hesitant at first, but then nodded decisively.
— Alright, Cloud. We will leave while you cover our retreat. But be careful, my friend.
With those words, Glenn and the members of his group scattered in different directions, trying to remain unnoticed in the darkness and looking for another way out. Meanwhile, Cloud stood in the doorway, his sword ready for battle.
A moment later, a group of soldiers hurried over, led by an officer who recognized the young blond.
— Ah, the famous Cloud Strife. —the officer said with a sarcastic smile—. What were you doing involved in this matter?
Cloud kept his composure, ignoring the first thing the officer said. In his mind, Sephiroth's words still echoed: "Find out information about the infiltrators."
— I'm here on orders —he replied calmly, not letting his true motives show—.
The officer examined him suspiciously, but finally scratched his head and shrugged.
— Alright, Cloud.
The young SOLDIER nodded, relaxing his tense muscles a little, and the officer ordered all troops to retreat, his eyes shining with respect mixed with fear at the presence of Cloud Strife.
— Immediate retreat! —he shouted, his voice echoing in the emptiness of the night—. We don't want any trouble with SOLDIER Strife!
The troops quickly scattered, abandoning their positions. Before long, the area was deserted, save for the sound of their boots disappearing into the distance. Cloud stood still for a moment, watching the threat evaporate, and after a brief moment, he began to reflect on what had just happened. He had managed to drive away the Shinra troops, but had been unable to obtain any concrete evidence. However, something about Glenn made him doubt that these were simply rumors or exaggerations.
With a sigh, he decided that he should inform Sephiroth of what had happened and of the existence of the rebel group. He didn't know what conclusion the general might come to, but it was his duty as a SOLDIER to report any suspicious activity. Making that decision, he turned around and began walking towards the building.
Arriving at Angeal Hewley's office, where Sephiroth was located, Cloud knocked on the door and waited to be allowed in. When the general did, he was met with a calm and serene face.
— Cloud, what news do you bring? —Sephiroth asked in a calm voice—.
The young SOLDIER sighed before explaining what had happened, omitting some details so as not to alarm the silver-haired man unnecessarily.
— I couldn't get any concrete proof, but the leader of the group told me that they are investigating Shinra's operations and have found evidence of abuses against the civilian population. It seems that they are willing to fight Shinra to protect the innocent.
Sephiroth listened to Cloud's information with a neutral expression, his gaze fixed on the young SOLDIER as he spoke, he watched him intensely, as if he was absorbing him completely. When he finished, he spoke in a calm voice.
— Thank you for the information, Cloud. I am interested in knowing if this rebel group has any ties to the Cetra. Do you know if he was in contact with them?
Cloud frowned, trying to remember details of the conversation with Glenn.
— They didn't mention anything about Aerith. They only told me that they are investigating and that the leader is called Glenn Lodbrok. I have no further information about him or his future plans.
At the mention of that name, a fleeting expression of surprise crossed Sephiroth's face.
— Lodbrok... —he repeated, as if stirring up an old image in his memory—. Glenn Lodbrok? That's a name I haven't heard in a long time...
He walked over to the window, looking up at the night sky with eyes that seemed to see beyond the stars.
— He was a fellow SOLDIER of mine when I was young. I didn't know he was involved in this kind of activity. It's interesting...
He turned to Cloud with a thoughtful expression and then a thin smile appeared on his lips.
— Cloud. Thank you for your information. It will be important to investigate this rebel group and find out if they have any connection to the Cetra.
The blond nodded, feeling that the conversation had taken an interesting turn. The connection between Glenn Lodbrok and Sephiroth had surprised him, but he didn't quite understand what that meant in the context of his mission.
— What plans do you have to investigate this group? —he asked, seeking clarification on the next steps—.
Sephiroth turned back to the window, his gaze lost in the night sky.
— I'm still not sure, Cloud. But it's important that we know if they have any connection to the Cetra and, if so, what they're looking for.
He turned to the young SOLDIER, his expression having become somber and enigmatic.
— But that's not the only thing we should be worried about. There's something else that worries me...
The general walked towards Cloud, his expression changing to something more personal and deeper. As he approached, the young SOLDIER noticed that Sephiroth seemed to be fighting some internal thought or feeling.
— Cloud —he began to say in a lower and deeper voice than before—. Seeing you with the Cetra, I noticed something something I don't like.
Cloud was surprised, not expecting Sephiroth to express something so personal and emotional.
— What do you mean? —he asked, trying to understand what was happening—.
The silver-haired man stopped in front of him, his cyan eyes shining with an intensity that was almost alarming.
— She was looking at you with with a special expression. As if as if she loved you.
Cloud was stunned, not knowing what to answer. The idea that Aerith could feel something more than friendship towards him surprised and confused him.
— No... it's not like that —he murmured, trying to deny Sephiroth's words, although deep inside he felt a small part of him that wasn't entirely sure he was lying—.
The general came even closer, his cold breath caressing the young blond's ear.
— Don't fool yourself, Cloud. She sees you as more than just a friend. And that... that's dangerous.
Sephiroth's proximity and his low, urgent tone made Cloud feel cornered, his heart pounding in his chest. He pulled away abruptly, needing space to process what the silver-haired man had said.
The general seemed to be talking about something deeper than just friendship, something he wasn't ready to consider.
— I don't know what you mean, Sephiroth. —he said in a firm voice, trying to reestablish his composure—. Aerith is my friend, nothing more. There's nothing dangerous about that.
Sephiroth smiled, but his expression wasn't kind. There was always something cold and distant about that gesture that made the young SOLDIER feel nervous.
— You're very naive, Cloud. In this world, friendships can easily turn into something more. And in mine, that can be lethal.
Cloud felt his space closing in, Sephiroth circling him like a predator preparing to strike. His mind was racing, trying to comprehend what the general was suggesting.
— What are you implying, Sephiroth? —he asked in a voice that barely sounded firm, feeling his words fade into the air like vapor—. That my friendship with her is dangerous?
Sephiroth laughed, a cold, sharp laugh that seemed to cut through the air.
— Don't try to understand, Cloud. I only know that you have to stay away from her. She's dangerous for you.
The general approached Cloud again, his face just a few inches from the other's. His eyes, an intense cyan color, shone with a strange light that seemed to penetrate the soul of the young blond.
— Cloud, you are mine. —Sephiroth's voice was a whisper that seemed to resonate in Cloud's ears—. I don't understand why you resist. —the silver-haired man murmured, his breath hot against the young SOLDIER's ear—.
With a gentle but firm pressure, Sephiroth took Cloud's face in his hands, bringing his lips close to the young man's. He gently kissed his lips, as if he were tasting Cloud's taste. Sephiroth's lips moved with a sensual slowness, exploring every curve and corner of the young SOLDIER's. The general's tongue slid between his lips, meeting Cloud's in a deep, passionate kiss.
The young blond felt dazed, his mind confused and his body burning. He had never experienced a kiss like this before, so intense and possessive.
Sephiroth's kiss was an invasion, an attack on Cloud's senses. His lips moved with a precision that made the young blond feel completely dominated, his tongue exploring every corner of his mouth with a voracious curiosity. The general's hand slid down Cloud's back, caressing the fabric of his clothes with a soft, warm touch that made the young SOLDIER shiver. The other hand rested on his hip, squeezing with a possessive gesture that made it clear who owned Cloud at that moment.
When they finally broke apart, the blond-haired young man found himself breathless, his eyes glazed over and his heart pounding. He felt overwhelmed by the intense kiss and Sephiroth's possessive touch. His mind had yet to process what had just happened, but his body reacted with a mix of excitement and fear. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself and clear his clouded mind.
— Sephiroth —he whispered, his voice barely audible—. I don't know what you're doing
The general laughed, a low, sensual sound that made the young SOLDIER shiver.
— I'm just showing you what's natural, Cloud. You're mine.
Cloud ended up abruptly pulling away from Sephiroth, his mind in a whirl, trying to understand what the general had done to him and what that kiss had meant.
— No... it's not like that —he muttered, trying to deny Sephiroth's words, although deep inside he felt a part of him that wasn't entirely sure he was lying—.
The general approached, his expression grim and determined.
— Do not fool yourself, Cloud. You are mine. And I will claim you.
Cloud felt trapped, surrounded by Sephiroth's imposing and dominant presence. The silver-haired man seemed to be in a state of contained fury, his eyes shining with a strange light that made the young SOLDIER feel cornered.
— I can't be yours, Sephiroth —he said in a firm voice, trying to maintain his composure—. I am my own master.
Sephiroth laughed, a cold and menacing sound that made Cloud shudder again.
— You are so naive, Cloud. In this world, no one is master of themselves. We are possessed by our desires, our needs.
The young man felt confused by Sephiroth's words. He knew that the general was touching on a sensitive subject, one that he himself had tried to avoid.
— I don't know what you want from me, Sephiroth —he said in a shaky voice, trying to maintain his composure—. But I can't be what you want me to be.
The general moved even closer, his cold breath caressing Cloud's skin.
— Don't resist. It's useless. —he whispered, his voice heavy with desire and possession—.
Without waiting for an answer, Sephiroth leaned down and kissed Cloud's lips again with an intensity that left him breathless. Their lips moved with an overflowing passion, as if they wanted to absorb the essence of the other. The general's tongue slid between the blonde's lips, exploring every corner and curve with an expert touch that made the young SOLDIER feel completely dominated.
Cloud let himself be carried away by the kiss, his resistance disappearing under the intensity of Sephiroth's passion. His tongue met the general's, moving in a sensual dance. The young SOLDIER's arms wrapped around the general's neck, squeezing tightly as they melted into a passionate embrace.
During the kiss, Cloud felt a flood of unknown emotions, a heat spreading through his body and a desire he couldn't deny. Sephiroth seemed to be his everything, his need, his desire. He surrendered to that feeling, allowing the general to possess him.
The two men's kiss continued, deeper and more passionate every second. Afterwards, Sephiroth slowly separated from the opposing lips, both panting and breathing heavily. Cloud's eyes shone with a mix of excitement and confusion, while the general's gaze was one of satisfaction and possession.
— You see, Cloud. —Sephiroth said in a low, seductive voice—. You've already given up. There is no more resistance. You're mine.
Cloud felt trapped, his mind still struggling to process what had happened. He knew he had given in to Sephiroth's wishes, but he couldn't understand why his body had reacted that way.
The blond-haired youth pulled away, trying to regain his composure. His mind was buzzing with confusing thoughts and intense emotions that he didn't know how to process.
— Don't be fooled, Sephiroth. —he finally said, his voice shaky but firm—. This doesn't mean I'm yours.
The general looked at him, a thin smile playing on his lips.
— Oh, Cloud, you don't understand. You're mine. And I'm going to make sure you remember that.
With that, Sephiroth turned and walked away, leaving Cloud alone with more questions than answers. What did that mean for their relationship?
