The brunette was in a place that she had been to many time times before…the astral plane. But this time it was different compared to how it has been the last 2 years. Ever since Gene had been found the astral plane had just been pitch black and then it would shift to a spirit's memory. Now it was still pitch black but she was joined by the illuminating glow of the floating orbs, or spirits.

The only thing, or someone that was missing from all of this was the person who was always there to guide her through her dreams, Gene. She began to look around hoping to find said person even though she knew it was now impossible for him to be here, his body was found and it was time for him to move on. Then she looked to her right and she had found the person she thought she would never see again.

"G-Gene is that really you," she asked shocked blinking a few times to make sure she wasn't seeing things.

"You really are an idiot, are you that stupid that you've mistaken him for me again," and there was that cold tone that she could recognize immediately.

She was in complete and utter shock and it was clearly evident on her face. She couldn't understand why she ended up making the same mistake again. Her eyes quickly filled to the brim with tears and she fell to her knees.

"I'm so sorry I didn't mean anything by it I swear. Please don't leave me again I don't think I could bear it," the brunette sobbed as her face was towards the ground.

She then felt her chin being lifted up by soft warm fingers, her brown orbs met soft blue ones instead of the icy cold ones she was expecting.

"I'm sorry too I didn't mean to make you this upset," the raven haired boy said.

Mai stared at the boy kneeling in front of her and she felt relieved yet upset that she was tricked this easily.

"So…it's really you Gene," she asked hesitantly afraid of the answer to come.

"Of course it is that idiot scientist couldn't find his way here in a million years even if he had a map and directions," Gene said laughing as he helped Mai off the ground.

Her eyes grew wide with relief and was excited for she was reunited with her guide.

"That was a cruel joke you know," Mai exclaimed slightly angry as she punched Gene softly on the arm.

"I know I'm sorry but I just couldn't help myself," he smiled as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"The scary thing was you actually sounded like him. So what's up I thought you crossed over when Naru found your body," Mai asked a bit confused.

"You need to stop hanging around my brother so much you're starting to act just like him," Gene sighed.

"How so," Mai asked crossing her arms.

"Well for one he had the same look of shock on his face and said that I should have crossed over," he explained.

"Well as far as he's concerned he just wants you gone probably sad as it may seem, but for me I'm really concerned. I don't want you to stay here and then not be able to cross over when you're ready and have to be stuck here forever," she said to him her voice laced with worry.

"Thanks, but the only reason I'm still here is because I'm not done here yet. I still have to be your spirit guide and protect you," he said and his voice went from cheery to serious.

"Is that what you are, well I guess it makes sense since you really did guide me through my dreams," Mai commented.

"Mai listen," again Gene kept his serious tone.

Just as his tone changed the brunette's smiled faded away.

"Something's wrong I can see it in your eyes," she said worried thinking that something bad was going to happen again.

"Can you make me a promise," he asked as he put both of his hands on her shoulders.

She nodded slowly and waited nervously for him to continue speaking.

"Promise me you'll stay close to Noll whether it be at the office or on a case. If not him then someone else that's on the team," he said and Mai could hear the desperate plea in his voice.

"I promise but why what's going on," she agreed but wanted to know why she had to stick with her stuck up boss of all people.

"I'll explain that some other time but please just do it for me," he said sounding more frantic than ever.

"I will I promise," Mai smiled trying to give Gene some reassurance.

He smiled back at her gently and then in the blink of an eye he was gone.

Her eyes flew open and she could see that she was back in her room. Her attention was then diverted to the blinking light flashing in the room which she discovered was coming from her phone. She flipped it open and notice that she has 2 missed calls and and several unread text messages all from the same number. She was scrolling through the messages each one different that said:

'Get up now'.

'Don't be late'.

'If you don't get up now you're going to be late'.

Then Mai suddenly remembered that she had to be at the office at 7am. She looked at the clock on her phone and quickly jumped out of bed realizing that it was already 6:50. She was brushing her teeth and at the same time pulling up her jean shorts. Then she grabbed her orange ruffle tank top from her closet and threw it over her head and slipped on her white shoes. While doing all this she thanked whatever higher being out there that she had done all of her packing the night before.

She grabbed her cellphone, backpack, and suitcase and ran out her front door only to run into someone as soon as she swung the door open.

"Oww why do these things always happen to me," Mai rubbed her head and noticed she was sitting on something soft yet firm.

When she looked up her gaze met a pair of cold blue eyes, then she looked down and noticed that she was sitting on Naru…she was on his lap. Heat immediately crept up onto her face and out of panic she hastily got up off of him.

"I'm so sorry Naru I was in such a hurry I guess I wasn't paying attention. Are you okay I didn't hurt you did I," she said rapidly still overwhelmed by the fact that she had been sitting on top of her boss moments before.

"I'm fine my concern is why you didn't answer your phone when I called," Naru crossed his arms once he got up off the ground.

"So that was you, you were the one who called me and sent me all those messages," Mai asked somewhat surprised.

"Yes who else would it be you idiot," he said coldly as usual.

'That makes sense no wonder those messages seemed so familiar,' Mai thought as she made the connection.

"Wait why are you outside of my apartment," she asked finally realizing where they were.

"Well since you have a habit of always arriving late I decided to handle the issue myself and by the looks of things I made the right decision as usual," he said and Mai could tell he was mad by the look in his eyes.

"Oh shut up you jerk. I'll just lock my door and then we'll be on our merry little way," Mai said happily as if nothing had happened.

Mai took the keys out of the front pocket of her backpack and locked the door to her apartment. Once the door was secured she placed her keys back where they were and grabbed her suitcase to walk to the van only to be stopped by Naru.

"Naru if you don't mind I'd like to go to the van," Mai said trying to move around him.

"I will but first let me take your luggage it's far too heavy for a woman like you to carry," Naru motioned to the suitcase his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Not having the energy to argue with her boss so early in the morning she handed the suitcase over and kept her backpack with her. They walked to the van together and all Mai could think about was why he was acting so different to her all of a sudden. She couldn't help but let her mind wander to the possibility that his feelings towards her were suddenly changing.

"No way it's never going to happen get serious Mai," she shook her head immediately dismissing the thought.

"Is there something you would like to say," Naru glanced over towards her.

"Huh, nope everything is totally fine," Mai smiled.

Oliver placed the suitcase in the back of the van while Mai in the back behind the passenger seat. The girl saw Lin sitting in the driver's seat waiting for Naru to take his seat.

"Good morning," she greeted Lin cheerfully with a smile.

"Good morning Mai," the older man replied back as he looked at the girl through the rearview mirror.

"Let's go the others will be meeting us there in Monk's car," Naru said climbing in the van and closed the door.

Lin started up the van and they all made the 3 hour drive to the Shindo house. Mai looked outside her window watching the passing scenery as many things were going through her mind. What was occupying her thoughts the most was what Gene had told her in her dream and the fact that Naru offered to help her with something, even if he meant it sarcastically. Another thought that she had was when she fell on top of Naru he didn't even try to get her off of him he just stayed there staring at her.

Now also during this time Lin kept his eyes focused on the road ahead as his young charge was gazing at his notebook reviewing the details of the case once more. Even though Oliver had every single detail memorized he did it just to make sure he wasn't missing a single thing. Oliver let is eyes glance towards the rearview mirror to see if his female assistant had fallen asleep, to his pleasure she had not.

'Why would he not throw me off of him the first chance that he got. There is no way he actually could have liked that could he,' Mai thought nervously.

As these thoughts were running through her mind Mai began to blush a fiery shade of red and looked down at the floor to try and hide her face from the two men. She took some long deep breaths to try and calm down her racing heartbeat and soon enough the heat in her cheeks drained away. Even though Mai had done her best to hide her emotions from the men her behavior did not go unnoticed by her boss. Naru just rolled his eyes at her childish antics and returned his attention to his notebook.

The girl continued looking out the window and kept her focus on everything they drove by and she could feel her eyes suddenly start to close.

'You know you're dying to try and figure out what she's thinking about,' Oliver heard a voice in the back of his mind say.

He completely ignored the voice and to his displeasure that tactic did not work as the voice kept on repeating itself.

'If anything my only concern about her is how unproductive she is with her time, which is something that I can't afford,' Naru thought hoping it would shut the voice up.

'This isn't something that you can ignore it'll keep building up more and more till it bursts like a dam holding back overflowing water,' the voice said as if it were mocking Naru.

'I have no such interests for someone like her. She is the assistant that now does all the work that I hated doing,' Naru thought back.

'Sure, sure whatever you say…Noll,' the voice chuckled and left as quickly as it came.

Naru became pissed at that very moment, as if he didn't already know who the voice belonged to their last words had just given them away.

"Damn it Gene you bastard," Oliver muttered angrily under his breath.

Lin then raised an eyebrow and gave him the 'something happened' look. Oliver responded with his 'I'm not going to answer' look which was followed by Lin's 'we'll talk about this later' face. Oliver just rolled his eyes and once again diverted his attention to his notebook.

To his displeasure something was distracting him from focusing on his notes no matter how hard he tried. He closed the notebook for the time being and decided to just watch the passing scenery. Naru glanced again to the rearview mirror and unsurprisingly Mai had fallen asleep. Oliver noticed that when she was sleeping she appeared different to him more calm and…he stopped himself before he could even finish the thought.

'So how's it going Noll,' he heard Gene's irritating voice speak to him telepathically.

'Go away Gene I don't want to talk to you,' Oliver replied with a cold stoic tone.

'You know you can be cruel little brother, especially to your own flesh and blood,' his twin whined.

'If you're going to just whine the whole time then go I'm very busy right now,' Oliver said getting very annoyed with his brother.

'I swear sometimes you can be so difficult, anyways I need to tell you something,' Gene said becoming serious.

'What is it,' Oliver spoke seriously even though he was already serious.

'Do you remember what I told you yesterday,' Gene asked.

'Yes I would hope so although you left out a lot of important details,' the colder twin said expecting a full explanation.

'The reason I asked you to do this is because Mai is in danger,' Gene confessed worry clear in his voice.

'What do you mean she's in danger,' Oliver asked angry with the vague details he kept receiving.

'I don't know much yet but someone is out to get her and by get her I mean kill her,' the kinder twin said and mumbled the last two words but Oliver heard them clear as day.

Naru could feel a burning rage grow in the pit of his stomach and he was concerned that he would lose control of his PK.

'Noll calm down it's okay I'm protecting her over here on this end I just needed to give you a head's up,' Gene reassured his twin trying to keep his powers in check.

'Okay I'll keep an eye on her out here but I need you to learn more about this person and their motives we cannot let things escalate. Besides I'm not eager to look for a new assistant anytime soon,' Oliver said plainly.

'I'll do that little brother. Also you should start opening up to Mai a bit more you just might lose that cold heart of yours,' Gene said and just like that he cut the connection before his brother could argue back.

Naru sighed and glanced at his bodyguard who gave him the 'we are so going to talk about this later' look. Naru faced forward and noticed that they had arrived to their destination. Lin parked the van along the curb and soon Monk's car came and parked behind them. Naru glanced back to find Mai was still asleep and he decided it was better not to wake her. He figured the more sleep she got now the more she would be awake during their investigation. He smirked to himself and everyone got out of their respective vehicle and went to greet Mrs. Shindo who was waiting in front of her home for them.
