Daniel tells Miles that he's here because he knows Hurley and Kate have come back to the island. Miles tells Daniel that they got here a couple of days ago and it's weird. Miles was about to say what Sawyer was doing with the situation when Daniel said "We don't have time. I need you to take me to them right now. Miles takes Daniel to see Kate. They knock on her door and Kate answers Daniel asks "Kate, how did you get back here, how did you do it. How did you get back to the island".
Kate responded "Dan. You're here. Where have you been".
Daniel told her "At Dharma headquarters in Ann Arbor. I was doing research. What's important right now. How did you get back here. To 1977".
Kate answered "I don't know. You're the science guy, you tell me. We were on a plane, and".
Daniel asked, "Who told you to get on a plane".
Kate answered "Nobody. That's who nobody. We were forced on it".
Daniel asked, "Who forced you".
Kate answered "Ben. The Ben from the future".
Daniel asked, "Did he tell you why you had to come back".
Kate answered "We didn't know we were. We thought we were being arrested and tried in Guam".
Miles asked, "What for".
Kate answered "Not important Miles. We're here and that's the end of it". Daniel accepted and began to leave. He told Miles that he needed to go to the Orchid and wanted Miles to drive him. Miles accepted and turned the engine on. Kate got her jumpsuit on and asked "Daniel. Stop. What are doing. What is all this for".
Daniel told Kate "Kate. I'll be right back. I just have an errand to run. Be right back".
Kate went to Sawyer and knocked on the door. Sawyer answered and said "Yeah".
Kate said, "Dan's back".
Sawyer asked, "What do you mean Faraday's back. Why".
Kate answered "I have no idea. He came in on the sub. He woke me up, and he started asking questions about how we came back. All before he took off to the Orchid".
Sawyer responded, "I'd love to trade theories about this Freckles, but I'm a little busy right now".
Kate said "I know I haven't told you everything but please don't shut me out. I'm sorry I wasn't open earlier but please let us talk about this".
Sawyer told her "It's not that Freckles".
Juliet said "James, tell her. She's involved and has a right to know".
Kate asked, "Know what".
Sawyer told Kate "Get in here". Kate entered and Sawyer told her "Phil, one of my security guys, got himself a videotape of us taking the kid out to the Hostiles".
Kate knew she screwed up and asked, "Where's the tape".
Sawyer answered, "With Phil".
Kate asked, "Where's he".
Sawyer showed Kate the closet in which Phil was tied up and said "Phil, Kate. Kate, Phil". Sawyer then slammed the closet door.
Daniel goes to where they are working down in the Orchid and after checking it out, he then talks to Pierre about how he should order the evacuation of the island. He says this because an incident will happen at the Swan station, and it will be catastrophic. He knows this because he is from the future. Miles hears this and tries to stop Daniel, but Daniel tells Pierre that Miles is his son, which Miles rejects. Sawyer gathers Hurley, Kate, Jin, into his house and informs them that the party's over and they have to leave despite him not wanting to. Hurley asked if Sawyer could convince Phil, it was an accident, but Sawyer said that he couldn't. Kate asked how long it would be until they realised that Phil was missing. Sawyer answered that they didn't have enough. Juliet asked Sawyer where they were supposed to go, and Sawyer said that they only have two options and that's to commander the sub and get off the island or live in the jungle. Jin and Hurley vote for the jungle when Daniel returns says "Kate, I'm sorry if I was rude before, but what I came to do is of critical importance to everyone in this room. Does anyone know where I can find the Hostiles".
Juliet asks why he needs to know that and Daniel answers that one of the Hostiles is his mother and she's the only person on the island that can help them get back to where they belong. Sawyer questioned Daniel on his mother being an Other and Daniel said that they met in the 1954 and she was being called Ellie. Hurley couldn't believe they were in 1954, and Juliet said that Daniel didn't tell them why he needed to find his mother. Daniel answered that he needs to talk to her and Sawyer questioned that Daniel told them to lay low and whatever happened, happened. Daniel just wanted to know, and Sawyer refused to tell him anything.
Kate asked, "What do you mean, back to where we belong, back to the future".
Daniel answered "No".
Hurley asked, "Then where do we belong".
Daniel answered "Not here. After today, we reset everything. Make everything right, and make sure none of this ever happens".
Kate asked, "Dan. What does that mean".
Daniel answered "We change the future. After today, 815 will never crash".
Everyone was shocked to hear this and Sawyer asked "I thought you said we couldn't. That it was impossible. That we'd always fail. That whatever happened, happened".
Daniel said "I know this can work. Please, just let me talk to my mother and this nightmare can all be over, for all of us. We'll never come to this island, and everybody will come back".
Kate piped up and asked, "Like Jack".
Sawyer said, "I know you miss the doc, Kate but".
Daniel said "Yes. Yes, everyone. They will all come back. Nobody has to die".
Everyone turned to Daniel and thought about the people that they had lost, and Juliet said "James, it's over for us here, and if Daniel can do what he says he can. We have to do it".
Sawyer responded, "But Blondie that means".
Juliet interrupted "We have to do it James, now everyone get moving, we don't have a lot of time".
Sawyer said "Jin, Miles on me. We're getting guns. The rest of you go to vans, we're going to the Others".
Everybody left and Kate remarked that the Others aren't going to be happy to see them. Daniel stopped and Kate wanted to know what he was doing. Daniel told him that he needed a minute and would catch up. Daniel goes over to child Charlotte and tells her to leave the island and never come back or she would die. This terrified child Charlotte and Daniel goes back over to the group at the Motor Pool. Sawyer, Jin, and Miles come over and says "All right, everybody take a gun. If we're going to the Others, we'll need them".
Sawyer, Jin, and Miles gave weapons to them all. When Sawyer gives one to Daniel, Daniel asks "Uh, do you have something for a beginner".
Sawyer handed him a handgun and said, "This is a closest we got to training wheels, Sparky". Radzinsky came over in a van and Sawyer exclaimed "Oh hell".
Radzinsky asked "What's going on here".
Sawyer said "Radzinsky, we're just heading out and going after the Hostile".
Radzinsky asked "All of you".
Sawyer answered "Yeah, all of us. That's why we have guns".
Radzinsky asked "Isn't that one of the psychists off the sub.
Daniel was about to answer but Sawyer said "Yeah, and I need him. So, go back to doing your job Radzinsky while I do mine".
Radzinsky said "But he's supposed to be out at the Swan site".
Sawyer responded "And I'm protecting that site. Making sure it's safe from the Hostiles, which you were begging me to do. Now I'm doing it, you're questioning me". Radzinsky didn't know how to respond, and Sawyer said "Do your job Radzinsky. I have mine and I'm doing it, so, leave me alone".
Radzinsky accepted and said "Yes Lafluer, sorry. I'm going to the worksite, do whatever it is you need to do Lafleur and I'm getting as much security to guard the site as I can".
Sawyer responded annoyed, "you do that".
Radzinsky left and Pierre came over and said, "I knew something was up the second I saw this big group now you told me that this man is my son is that true".
Sawyer turned to Daniel and said "seriously".
Hurley responded "Dude. That's ridiculous".
Pierre asked Hurley "What year were you born. What year".
Hurley answered "Uh, 1931".
Pierre asked, "Your 46".
Hurley answered "Yeah. Yes, I am".
Pierre asked "So, you fought in the Korean war".
Hurley responded, "There's no such thing".
Everyone was astounded by this and Pierre asked, "Who's the President of the United States".
Hurley relented and said "All right, dude. We're from the future. Sorry".
Sawyer exclaimed "Hugo. Shut up".
Pierre asked Miles "It's true, then. You are my son".
Miles answered "Yeah. It's true".
Pierre said to Daniel "you said I needed to evacuate this island, that we were all in danger if we stayed here, is that true".
Daniel answered "yes, it is. You need to get as many people as you can off this island because what happened at the Orchid will happen at the Swan and the incident it caused will be catastrophic. So, you need to evacuate the island".
He turns to everyone looking for someone to tell him that Daniel is either crazy or wrong but after they don't, he says "well I hope you know what you're doing". Pierre then leaves to evacuate the island.
Sawyer remarked "let's go before there are any more interruptions". They all pile into the van and head out passed the sonic fence and into the jungle.
They can't go any further in the van and Daniel says "since there are so many of us with weapons, we don't want them to think we're an invading force. So, I'll go with only two of you while the rest stay here".
Sawyer said "Me and Kate will go. We just talked to them and got them to save Ben. If this is going to work, we're going to be your best chance".
Daniel said "Agreed. Come on, we need to go".
Sawyer turned to Juliet and said, "I'll see you when I get back".
Juliet said, "good luck, James. I'll see you when you get back".
Sawyer kissed Juliet and said, "I love you".
Juliet said "And I love you. I will always love you. Now go. Save everybody".
Sawyer accepted and told everybody "Wait here, we'll be right back". Sawyer, Kate, and Daniel left into the jungle leaving Juliet, Hurley, Jin, and Miles. Sawyer, Daniel, and Kate walked until they stopped for water Sawyer asked "So, how is mommy gonna help us stop our plane from crashing".
Daniel answered "In about four hours, the Dharma folks at the Swan worksite, they're gonna, gonna drill into the ground and accidently tap into a massive pocket of energy. The result of the release of this energy will be catastrophic. So, in order to contain it, they're gonna cement the entire area in, like Chernobyl. And this containment, the place they built over it. I believe you called it the Hatch. The Swan Hatch. Because, of this one accident, these people are gonna spend the next twenty years keeping that energy at bay by pressing a button. A button that your friend Desmond will one day fail to push. And that will cause your plane, Oceanic 815 to crash on this island. And because your plane crashed, a freighter will be sent to this island. A freighter I was on, a freighter that Charlotte was on, and so forth. This entire chain of events is gonna start happening this afternoon. But we can change that. I've studied relativistic psychics. One thing emerged, over and over. You can't change the past. Can't do it. Whatever happened, happened. All right. But then I finally realised. I had been spending so much time focused on the constants. I forgot about the variables. Do you know what the variables in these equations are, Sawyer".
Sawyer answered "No".
Daniel said "Us. We're the variables. People. We think, we reason, we make choices, we have free will. We can change our destiny". He then said "I think I can negate that energy under the Swan. I think I can destroy it. If I can, then that Hatch will never be built, and your plane, your plane will land. Just like it's supposed to, in Los Angelas". Kate asked how Daniel planned on destroying the energy and Daniel answered that he was going to detonate a hydrogen bomb".
Sawyer said "What. You don't mean".
Daniel said "I do James, now we need to keep moving. We're nearly there". Daniel left and Kate and Sawyer followed him.
Sawyer remarked to Kate "He's gone completely nuts. Dangerously nuts. We need to stop him".
Kate asked, "What are you gonna do shoot him".
Sawyer answered "If I need to. He's gonna kill us all Kate".
Kate said "No. He's right. We don't belong here James, and this can fix it".
Sawyer asked, "You really think setting off a nuke is gonna solve all our problems, Freckles".
Kate answered "I was just on a plane in handcuffs about to go to prison and for the second time, I've ended up on this island. But this time in 1977. I've stopped questioning how insane things are".
They arrive at the Others camp and as Daniel approaches them Sawyer holds Kate back. Daniel tells Sawyer and Kate to wish him luck and Sawyer responded trying to call out "Wait. Wait. Hold up". Kate said to let him go and Sawyer exclaimed "Son of a bitch". An Other spots Daniel and tries to get his gun but Daniel shoots near the Other and tells him to back up. Daniel told the Others not to move and that he wanted to speak to Eloise. Richard spoke to Daniel and said that Eloise wasn't here right now, and Daniel aimed his gun at Richard. Richard recognised Daniel and asked if they knew each other. Daniel asked for Eloise again and wanted to know where the bomb was. Richard told Daniel to lower his gun because no one needed to get hurt. Daniel said that he was going to give Richard three seconds and Richard pleaded with Daniel to stop but he continued to count. On two Daniel is shot by Eloise. Sawyer asked, "What's the mad man doing down there".
Kate said "What if this is why we're here. What if this is why every time I'm about to put in jail, I get sent here. What if I'm supposed to be here, what if this is what we're supposed to do". Sawyer and Kate then hear Daniel getting shot.
Richard asked why Eloise shot Daniel and Eloise said that it was because Daniel had a gun on Richard. Richard told Eloise that Daniel was never going to shoot him. Daniel realised the person who shot him was his mother and told her that she knew all along that this was going to happen, and she sent him to the island anyway. Eloise asked who Daniel was and Daniel answered that he was her son.
