The monster flies around the island before stopping to cut Richard down from where he had him. The monster talks to him and when he mentions the Candidates, Richard is surprised because he doesn't know about them. The monster is surprised by this because he followed Jacob without knowing what his plan was, and he would have never treated him like that. The monster sees the boy Jacob and leaves. Ben finds Illana crying in the statue and tells her that Locke killed them by turning into the smoke before lying and saying that he killed Jacob but told the truth about him kicking him into the fire. Illana then gathers his ashes into a bag. The monster goes to the Barracks and find Sawyer drinking. Sawyer doesn't care that if Locke isn't dead but knows he isn't Locke because Locke was scared, and he isn't. The monster than insists that if he comes with him, then he can show him why he's on this island to which Sawyer agrees to. Illana insisted to Sun, Ben, Lapidus, Carole, Claire, and Aaron that they should go to the Temple since it's the safest place on the island.
Claire said, "I don't feel comfortable taking Aaron there".
Illana said, "it's the safest place on the island".
Claire said, "I still don't want Aaron around them because they hurt me and take children. I will not risk Aaron's safety".
Illana asked, "what are your names".
Claire asked, "why do you want to know".
Illana answered, "because I'm here to protect the candidates who are Kwon, Reyes, Jarrah, Ford, and Shephard, who are most likely to be at the Temple".
Claire said, "well they aren't us because I'm Claire Littleton with my son Aaron, and this is my mother".
Illana said, "Since I'm not here to protect Littleton you can do what you want because I'm here to protect the candidates but you're welcome to come along if you want".
Claire told her "No. We are going back to the plane where I know it safe, and we can try to get off this island".
Sun said "Yeah, what makes you think that I'm going with you".
Illana said that if Jin's on the island, then he will be at the Temple. Illana said that they should go, and Sun asked about Locke and that they need to bury him. This was accepted by them all and they all decided to go to the beach camp before they headed off. The monster leads Sawyer and they both see a kid Jacob before the runs away and the monster chases him before falling over and kid Jacob reminds him about the rules and not being able to kill him. Sawyer tries to find the monster but finds Richard who wants him to go with him, but he rejects him because the monster has answers. Sawyer follows the monster when he returns and then pulls a gun on him wanting to know what he is. The monster answers that he is trapped. Illana leads them to the beach camp, and they bury Locke in the camp graveyard with Ben admitting that he killed Locke which shocked everyone, and Carole moved back from him and closer to Claire. Illana says "all right. We ready to go now".
Sun said "Goodbye Claire. I'll see you again once we come back".
Claire said, "I know you'll find Jin and get him home to Ji Yeon". Claire then hugged Sun and Sun accepted.
Sun said, "Goodbye to you all".
Lapidus said "When we get back. I'll see if I can fix the plane and get us all off this island".
This was accepted and Ben said, "Goodbye you three".
Carole said, "Goodbye Mr Linus, thanks for you know reuniting me with my daughter".
Ben accepted and Aaron said to them all "Bye".
Illana then led Sun, Lapidus, and Ben out into the jungle and Carole asked Claire "Why did he say try to fix the plane. I thought we were waiting for rescue".
Claire answered, "We can't leave the island".
Carole asked "What".
Claire said "You have to leave in a specific direction, or it'll never work, and the island can't be found. People usually just end up here by accident".
Carole remarked "Great".
Claire looked around at the old camp and said "Hey, you know what. Since we can't leave until the pilot comes back. Why don't we stay here".
Carole asked "What. I thought we were going to the plane for Aaron".
Claire said "It's the beach. The safest part of the island. And since we can't leave until the pilot comes back and the pilot's going to come back here, so I think it's our best option. Plus, we've got plenty of fruit trees and the ocean right there all to ourselves. It'll be our little family paradise until we can get off this island".
Carole said, "You make a fair point".
Claire asked "Aaron, what do you think".
Aaron answered, "I like it here and if you think it's best mummy then it's where I want to be".
Claire clutched her chest in pure delight and Aaron asked, "What's wrong mummy".
Claire answered "Nothing baby, nothing at all. I just like hearing you say that. It makes me feel really good". She then said, "Now mummy saw some left over fishing poles would you like to learn how to fish and catch us our dinner".
Aaron answered, "Yes mummy".
Claire said "Come on, I'll take you to Jin's spot. He never not caught anything from there". Carole, Claire, and Aaron went to go fishing.
The monster and Sawyer climb down a cliffside to a cave, but Sawyer falls off, just as he's about to fall completely, the monster grabs him, and they go down together. They enter the cave and after picking up a white rock from a scale and tossing it off the cliff the monster shows Sawyer the names written on the walls and how they are associated with a number. There are many names crossed off except 6. 4 – Locke, 8 – Reyes, 15 – Ford, 16 – Jarrah, 23 – Shephard, and 42 – Kwon. Sawyer is unsure why Jacob has his name because he never met him, but the monster was sure that he had and doesn't know it. The monster then reveals that all their names are on there because they are candidates to be the new protector of the island. The monster crosses out the name Locke and informs Sawyer that he can do nothing and see how it all plays out, take up the mantle of protector or leave because the island doesn't need protecting. Sawyer wonders how they leave and the monster answers that they will do it together, to which Sawyer agrees.
Hurley leaves to get Miles food and when he enters the Temple, he sees Jacob who wants him to help someone who is coming to the island find it. Sayid goes over to Kate and says "Kate".
Kate responds "Sayid". He then notices the Others staring at him and asks, "Why are they all staring at me".
Kate told him "Ignore them. There's nothing to worry about".
Sayid said "Look, you told me these people think I have an infection, that they wanted to give me some mysterious pill that you didn't trust and took away but never came back with. What did they tell you. What was in the pill".
Kate answered "The pill was poison. They wanted me to kill you. They think that you're evil now and better off dead". Sayid was shocked by this and Kate told Sayid "But I told them that they were wrong. That you were good and nothing can change that. They also believe the same thing happened to Claire, but I know her. I know you. And you're both not evil. You're good. You're good people".
Sayid said "I'm not good. I shot a child remember".
Kate responded "Look Sayid. I may have disagreed with what you did but you thought you were doing the right thing. I know what it's like when you try to do the right thing, but it turns out to be wrong. I know that, Sayid. And because I did that Sawyer wants to kill me and I know Claire won't like me. And if anyone's the bad person around here it's me. I caused a lot of pain and hurt. I got Juliet killed and I can't take any of it back. It wouldn't work if I tried, but I know you are good Sayid and the one thing I can do it tell you that. Don't give up because I know you can beat this thing. I believe in you".
Hurley searched around the Temple and was caught but with help from Jacob he tells Dogen that he's a candidate and can do what he wants. Hurley asked Jacob what Dogen said, and Jacob told Hurley that he doesn't want to know. Jacob then asked what Hurley was doing and Hurley answered that he was going through the secret passageway. Jacob responds, "I told you to bring Kate with you".
Hurley responded "Have you seen Kate. She's all depressed after Jack, Juliet, and Sawyer. I didn't think she'd want to come. I can just go myself".
Jacob responded, "You have to bring her with you".
Hurley said "Okay, it's bad enough you already made me write down way too much stuff, and I just lied to a samurai. You really want me to take Kate".
Jacob said, "You must and when you ask tell her that she agreed not to steal anymore and would be good".
Hurley went over to Kate and said, "Be cool Kate, act natural".
Kate asked "What".
Hurely said "Dude, keep your voice down. I'm gonna get up and go. Wait ten seconds and then follow me".
Kate asked, "Where are we going Hurley".
Hurley answered, "I found a secret tunnel that leads out to the jungle".
Kate asked, "You found a secret tunnel".
Hurley said "Well, Jacob told me about it. He said you and me have to go".
Kate said "I'm not going anywhere. Not after everything".
Hurley said, "I told him you'd say that, so he told me to tell you that you agreed to not steal anymore and be good".
Kate got up and asked, "What did you just say".
Hurley answered, "That you agreed not to steal anymore and be good".
Kate remembered the man who told her that when she was a kid and wondered if that was Jacob all along. Kate asked, "Where is he".
Hurley asked "What".
Kate asked "Jacob. Where is he".
Hurley answered "He's kind of dead. He turns up whenever he wants, like Obi-Wan Kenobi. But if you wanna talk to him, he's where we're going, dude".
Kate said "Then take me. Take me to him. Take me to Jacob".
Sawyer and the monster continue on the path, and they see Jin. Sawyer calls out "Jin".
Jin turned surprised to hear and now see Sawyer. He asks "Sawyer, have you seen Sun. She might be on Hydra Island because that's where the plane landed".
The monster walks into the clearing and says, "I'm sorry Jin but she's no longer there". Jin was surprised to see the monster thinking it's Locke and the monster said, "Hello Jin".
Jin exclaims "John".
The monster says, "It appears that you're looking for your wife".
Jin says, "I thought you were dead".
Sawyer answers "it's not Locke but he still wants us to get off this island".
Jin was shocked by it not being Locke and the monster said, "yes James I do. Jin, I know where your wife is and if you follow me. I promise to get you back to her". Jin was shocked to hear this and the monster then said, "Then Jin, I will get you and your wife off this island and home to your daughter".
Jin asked, "I have a daughter".
The monster said, "yes you do, and Sun named her Ji Yeon, exactly like you wanted". Jin smiled as the monster asked, "So, you coming with us".
Jin turned to Sawyer before exclaiming "yes".
Hurley led Kate out of the Temple and Hurley stopped. Kate asked, "Which way".
Hurley answered, "It's this way".
Hurley and Kate continued to walk, and Hurley asked "So, I have to ask. I've been scared to, but I have to know".
Kate asked, "What is it".
Hurley asked, "What happened with Aaron".
Kate asked, "What".
Hurley said "I was at Santa Rosa depressed over hearing about Jack when Sayid busted in and said that Locke was dead, and I needed he needed to get me somewhere safe. Then the cops bust in and arrest us over Aaron. What happened".
Kate answers "We were caught. They found out about the lie. That's it".
Hurley asks "But how. Nothing for three years and then bam right after Jack's death the world knows about Aaron".
Kate said "Well, we can't run forever. The truth catches up eventually and I'm happy about it in a way. A weight lifted off my shoulders. Strangely, and despite everything that has happened. I've haven't felt this good in three years".
Hurley asked "I thought you like it. I thought you liked being Aaron's mother".
Kate said "I was never his mother. That was a lie I told myself every day for three years to excuse what I did. But now he's gone and I'm free of the burden. Free of the lies, free of the guilt, free of the responsibility". Hurley was shocked by this and Kate said "Raising Aaron was the hardest thing that I've ever had to do. He was a burden and massive growing never-ending responsibility. I didn't realise it until the arrest but that was how I truly felt. It's not his fault, it's just what a kid is. And I never could really enjoy it because there was always the baggage of not being his real mother, the lying, the manipulation. It was never real, and I didn't truly love him. I couldn't. I only thought I did, and that was because I kept lying to myself. Everything just became so clear after the arrest, how I felt and how it was my fault. I even realised that I was growing to resent Aaron. I took him because I needed him and kept him because I needed something that would always need me, but I resented him for keeping me tied down. Keeping me from doing what I wanted. Keeping me in that house. It was a double-edged sword".
Hurley said "So, you think Claire's alive. Because if you don't want him then I know she'll have him".
Kate answered "Ever since we came back to the island. I know that she's alive and will be with Aaron again. That was another thing I resented. She was on the plane to give him up, yet she was the best mom possible for him. She was so good with him, and she truly loved him. I never had that with Aaron".
Hurley said "I don't know. You looked pretty good with him when I saw you and you cared for him".
Kate said "Wasn't love Hurley. I cared for him sure, and I never wanted him to be hurt but I never loved him. Not like Claire. Not even like Charlie. Her love for him was pure and nothing could ever replace that".
Kate then stepped on an inhaler and Hurley asked, "What is that".
Kate looked at it and said, "Asthma inhaler".
Hurley said "Dude, it's Shannon's".
Kate then looked up and said, "We're at the caves".
Hurley asked, "The caves we used to live in".
Kate said "Yep. Good times. When we were all together and our only concern was waiting for rescue".
Hurley remarked "Yeah, it all so much easier than".
Kate snapped back and said "Enough reminiscing. We need to go see Jacob. Let's keep moving".
Hurley accepted this and said, "Jacob's not far".
Kate responded "Good. Because I need to talk to him".
Hurley then continued to lead Kate until they reach the lighthouse and Hurley said, "It's right there. It's a lighthouse".
Kate said "Oh my God. How have we never seen it before".
Hurley answered, "I guess we weren't looking for it".
Kate remarked "Well, how goals were pretty driven. No room or time for exploring".
Hurley and Kate walked up to the lighthouse and Hurley remarked "Pretty cool huh".
Kate asked, "Jacob's in here".
Hurley answered, "I guess so but first we have to go upstairs and turn this thing on".
Hurley tried to enter but the door was jammed, and Kate asked, "Did Jacob tell you how to handle the door being jammed".
Hurley answered "No".
Kate kicked the door, and it opened. Kate remarked "I guess it needed a woman's touch".
Hurley remarked "It's a good thing it's you that did that for and not Jack or Sawyer. If you did that to them".
Kate interrupted "They couldn't take it. I know". She then said, "Let's go".
Hurley and Kate climbed the lighthouse and Hurley was exhausted afterwards. Hurley remarked "Woah, dude, this is cool. Must've built this to help ships get here and stuff. I guess they used a mirror because electricity hadn't been invented yet".
Kate asked, "Where's Jacob".
Hurley said "Uh, he's not here yet". He then said, "Let's get started". Hurley then asked, "Tell me when it gets to 108 degrees".
Kate then saw reflections in the mirror and continued to watch until she saw another one. She said "Stop". Hurley stopped and Kate asked, "Did you see that".
Hurley asked, "Did I see what".
The mirror. I saw something in the mirror".
Hurley said, "It's just ocean dude".
Kate looked at the wheel and said, "These are our names". She saw Ford and Jarrah both weren't crossed out and then she saw Shephard which wasn't crossed out. She then searched down and found Austen which was crossed out at 51. She was shocked that her name was crossed out and told Hurley "Turn it to 51 degrees".
Hurley responded "Uh, I don't think Jacob wants". Kate moved it to 51 degrees and looked into the mirror. Hurley then looked and asked "What. What is that".
Kate answered "It's my house. The house I grew up in. The house I blew up".
Hurley remarked "Huh, that's weird".
Kate said "That's my house. My house. He's the man. He was the man in the store. The man who helped me. The man who told me not to steal and be good. That's the man. That was Jacob. He's been watching me. Watching us all. Watching us since we were kids". Kate asked "Hurley. Where's Jacob".
Hurley answered, "I don't know".
Kate said, "You said that he would be here".
Hurley said "Well, I was just kind of assuming".
Kate asked "Hurley". She then went up to him and said "I wanna know why he was watching me. I wanna why he came up to me as a kid. So, you're gonna ask him right now".
Hurley said, "It doesn't work like that, I told you, he just kinda shows up whenever he feels like it". Kate grabbed the telescope and Hurley asked, "What are you doing".
Kate said "You get him to appear right now and tell me. You tell me what he says. You tell me why he was watching me".
Hurley answered, "I don't know".
Kate said, "Why did he come up to me as a kid".
Hurley said, "I don't know".
Kate asked "Why is my name written down on this thing. And why is it crossed out".
Hurley said, "He didn't tell me".
Kate asked, "What does he want from me".
Hurley said, "I was supposed to".
Kate yelled "What does he want from me".
Hurley told her "I don't know, Kate".
Kate said, "One last chance".
Hurley said "I can't. I told you, I can't".
Kate then swung the telescope and as Hurley screamed "Don't" she smashed the mirrors. Kate didn't stop until they were all smashed when she dropped the telescope.
Kate then left the lighthouse and stared at the ocean. Hurley wiped his face with his arm and left ink on his forehead. Jacob asked Hurley how it went, and Hurley asked where Jacob was. Jacob said "Wouldn't matter. She wouldn't have been able to see me anyway".
Hurley responds "Yeah, well, if you told me that and had explained everything, then maybe Kate wouldn't have freaked out and smashed your mirror into a million pieces". Hurley then said, "Thanks for the seven years of bad luck, by the way". Jacob said that Hurley had ink on his forehead. Hurley responded "I have ink on my forehead. That's all you have to say. Kate broke your lighthouse, dude. Mission unaccomplished. Whoever you said we needed to help get to the island is totally screwed".
Jacob said that they would find some other way and Hurley remarked that Jacob didn't seem to care about everything he wanting to do not getting done. Hurley then realised and said "Wait a minute. Did you want Kate to see what was in that mirror". Jacob gave Hurely a body expression that said he did, and Hurley wanted to know why. Jacob answered, "Because it was the only way she'd understand how important she is". Hurley said that he thought Jacob's plan backfired and Jacob said "Kate is here because she has to do something. She can't be told what that it. She's gotta find it herself. Sometimes you can walk right into someone's cell and tell them what they're supposed to do. Other times, you have to let them look out at the ocean for a while". Hurley then asked for Jacob to tell him everything upfront next time because he's not a big fan of secret plans Jacob said "I couldn't risk you not coming, Hugo. I had to get you and Jack as far away from that Temple as I possibly could". Hurley asked why and Jacob said that someone bad was going there. Hurley said that they had to warn them, and Jacob said that they couldn't warn them because it was too late.
