Everyone follows the monster to the clearing with Claire's tent besides a big tree where the monster thought they should rest; they did as he explains his plan. The monster insists that they need to take advantage of the daylight and leave. Sun, Jin, Sawyer, and Sayid all gather by the tent. Sun asked Jin "you going with Locke".

Jin answered "he said that if I followed him, I would find you at the Temple and I did so I'm following him. I'm not giving up a chance to go home because I want to see our Ji Yeon".

Sun said, "you know her name".

Jin answered, "Locke told me, but I want to hear about her from you".

Sun told him "I named her exactly like you wanted and she is so much like you, you'll love her, and she'll love you".

Jin said, "then I can't wait to meet her".

Sun smiled before saying "I have your ring".

Sun put it on Jin's finger and after looking at it on his finger, kissed her. The monsters group started to leave, and they all followed. On the way the monster mentioned that they would be there for a couple of days and Sawyer questioned. The monster spoke to him alone about him speaking out of terms and when Sawyer asked, "So, how did you manage to summon the smoke thing".

The monster answered, "I'm the smoke thing".

Sawyer asked, "why didn't they take you up on your offer to leave then".

The monster answered "because they're convinced that they're protecting the island from me when in fact all I want to do is leave. So, it's kill or be killed, and I don't want to be killed". The monster then sends Sawyer to Hydra Island to do some recon on the passengers. Sawyer went to Hydra Island and walked past the cages where he and Kate were once held, and even found the Kate wore still in her cage. Sawyer thought about when Kate wore it and how he slept with her. Sawyer thought about Kate and how his opinion of her from when she wore the dress had completely changed. Sawyer didn't just blame Kate for Juliet but himself. The way he acted towards Kate when she came back was not right. He let old feelings cloud his judgement and acted like he did when they were last together. If he had only confirmed to Kate and Juliet that he was over her and Juliet was the love of his life. Then Juliet wouldn't have tried so hard to reset things. Confuse her into thinking he still had feelings for Kate. Juliet was the love of his life, and she was his, and he should have treated her better and let her know that he only loved her. If he did then he wouldn't hate Kate and be able to propose to the woman, he loved. He would have Kate as a friend and Juliet as a wife. Sawyer wished he could go back and change it but knew he couldn't, that whatever happened, happened, and he would have to deal with it for the rest of his life. Sawyer dropped the dress and left walking over to the plane and checking it out. Sawyer found no one until he followed a trail to a pile of bodies. He then saw a woman and chased her until he tackled her, and she told him that her name was Zoe and was the only one left. Zoe tells him about how she found the bodies and he told her that he could take her to a group of people on the main island. Zoe continues to speak to Sawyer and questions him about his people and if they have guns. Sawyer then pulls a gun on her not believing her story. She whistles and a group of men from the nearby bushes aim their guns at him. Sawyer drops his gun, and they take him to their base where they are setting up pylons like at the Barracks. They take him to the dock where a submarine is docked and force him inside. Sawyer notices a locked door but is forced past it to Charles Widmore. Charles said "Hello, Mr Ford. Long time since we last saw each other".

Sawyer said, "You remember".

Charles responded "How could I forget. That was the day my son died".

Sawyer remarked "And shot by his mother to. Time travel's a bitch".

Charles said "Sure is. The one thing that you can never change". He then asked, "What are you doing here Mr Ford".

Sawyer said, "I'm here because you kidnapped me".

Charles responded, "We both know that you're here for a reason what is it".

Sawyer answered that Locke sent him and when Charles said that Locke was dead, Sawyer said that they both knew he wasn't talking about Locke. Sawyer then said that he would go back to the monster and tell him that the coast was clear and that he didn't find anybody. Then he would bring the monster to Charles so he can kill the monster. Charles asked what he wanted in exchange and Sawyer said that the people that he comes back with don't get hurt and they are given safe passage off the island. Charles asked how he knew he could trust Sawyer and Sawyer answered that it was the same way he can trust him. Sawyer asked "So, do we have an agreement".

Charles shook Sawyer's hand and said, "I suppose we do. And James, I suggest you take my gift back with you, to prove that you really found nothing".

Sawyer asked, "What gift". Charles smiled at Sawyer.

Sawyer rows back to the main island with Jack's body in the outrigger. The monster came over and asked, "How'd it go". He then saw Jack's body and said, "I see you didn't come back alone".

Sawyer said, "No. I didn't". He then said, "You didn't really send me over there to find passengers from that plane, did you".

The monster answered that he didn't, and Sawyer said that in case he was interested, all the passengers were dead. The monster said it was terrible and asked what happened. Sawyer answered that he didn't know and when the monster asked what Sawyer did know, Sawyer answered that Charles Widmore was on Hydra Island and won't let them on the submarine without a fight. The monster asked if it was Charles Widmore and Sawyer knew that they must know each other then, and that he wasn't alone and had six armed guards with him, as well as whatever crews on the submarine. Sawyer then said that there was a locked door on the submarine so, they're hiding something and setting up pylons like at the Barracks which keep the monster out. The monster asked what Sawyer said about him and Sawyer answered "I told them I'd tell you the coast was clear and bring you back with me. Walk you right into their trap. That way, they could kill you. To ensure this they gave me the doc's body as proof to you that I found nobody. Which means they'll be caught with their pants down when we change our plan of attack".

The monster said that he appreciated Sawyer's loyalty and Sawyer responded that the monster said that he would get him off the island and that a deal's a deal. The monster accepted this.
