Desmond awakes on Hydra Island and is surprised that Penny isn't there but more so that Charles Widmore is. Charles Widmore tells him that both Penny and his son are safe, but he had to take him because he would never voluntary go back to the island. Desmond attacks him but is pulled off and held as Charles Widmore and Zoe go to the generator room. They enter and begin to test the equipment but when it fails, they send someone in to check it out. As the person was checking the machine out, someone realised it was a bad breaker and as they turned it on. The machine turned on and killed the person inside before they could turn it off. They take the body away and place Desmond inside to conduct the experiment which they believe he will survive due to his exposure to electromagnetism before. They turn it on, and the machine works. Charles and Zoe check on Desmond who awakes perfectly fine and is immediately ready to help Charles Widmore. Zoe and a few men take Desmond with them, but they are stopped by Sayid who kills everyone but Desmond and Zoe, he tells Zoe to run, and she does. Sayid wants Desmond to follow him, and he does.
Hurley lays flowers at Libby's grave as Illana goes and informs him that she's leaving now for the Black Rock. Illana leaves and Hurley sees Michael appear before him and is here to stop him from killing everyone. Micheal informs him that he has to not blow up the plane or everyone will die. Illana returns and Hurley tries to stop her from going to blow it up but as she pleads with him, she place her bag down to forcefully and the dynamite detonates killing Illana. Everyone stared in shock at this. Hurley found Jacob's ashes as Richard attempted to get more dynamite. Kate said "Dynamite. You're going to get more after that".
Richard said "Well, Kate, that's a risk I'm willing to take".
Claire said "I'm not. We're not blowing up that plane. My son. My three-year-old just watched someone blow herself up. He is terrified and frankly so am I".
Richard said "I'm sorry that your kid had to see it. It wasn't a pleasure for any of us. But we have to stop that thing because trust me. Your kid's gonna know fear when the black smoke comes for him".
Aaron squealed into Claire. And Claire moved Aaron to one arm and slapped Richard. He told Richard "Stop scaring my son".
Claire then took Aaron away to calm him down. Carole remarked to Richard "Thanks. Do you have to make her life difficult. She's just got her son back and now she has to deal with this".
Richard responded "I'm sorry but we all have to deal with it. We're all here and unfortunately this is we've got to deal with".
Carole said "But you're not making it better. You saying that we're all gonna die and telling a three-year-old that he's going to attacked by a monster, yeah, great work".
Kate said "They're right. Despite whatever need to stop Locke, you do not need to scare Aaron. He's already been through enough".
Richard responded "Well, I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry okay, but these are the cards that we're dealt with and the kids just gotta put up with island life. We all do". Hurley said that Richard was right and the only choice they had. Hurley said, "Trust me, Kate".
Kate knew that when she didn't trust her friends, it usually ended in disaster so trusted Hurley and said "Okay".
Richard said "Good. Someone go collect the Littleton's. We're leaving".
Richard led everyone but Hurley to the Black Rock and Ben remarked "Kinda makes you think, doesn't it".
Kate asked, "What's that".
Ben answered, "Illana. There she was, handpicked by Jacob. Trained to come and protect you candidates. No sooner does she tell you who you are, then she blows up. The island was done with her. Makes me wonder what's gonna happen when it's done with us".
Carole remarked "He's glass half full isn't he". She then saw Aaron still clinging to Claire and asked, "How is our boy".
Claire shook her head and Carole said "Don't worry. You stay where you are. Your mummy will protect you". Claire rubbed Aaron's back and told him "It's okay baby. You stay right there. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere". Aaron didn't move and Carole and Claire continued after the others.
Richard led them all to the Black Rock and Claire said, "Hey Aaron, look. Pirate ship".
Aaron asked, "Did it really have pirates on it".
Claire answered, "I don't know, maybe. But it's a pirate ship".
Aaron looked in amazement at the Black Rock as Richard said that he wanted everyone to stay here because he was going to handle the dynamite alone. Richard realised Hurley wasn't there and asked where he was. Kate said, "I thought he was up front with you". Hurley yelled at them all to run and ran towards them as the Black Rock exploded and sent them all to the ground. Richard asked why Hurley did that and Hurley answered that he was protecting them. Richard asked Hurley what he was thinking and Kate told Richard "Calm down".
Richard asked "What're we supposed to do now. That's it".
Kate told Richard "That's enough".
Richard said, "We're all dead".
Miles remarks to Hurley that a warning would have been nice, and Hurley responded that he did tell them to run. Miles asked why he did that, and Hurley answered that Micheal told him to. Miles asked who that was and Hurley said that Micheal was one of the people that come and yell at him after they died. Hurley said that Micheal told him to stop them from blowing up the plane so with no more dynamite, the plane doesn't blow up. Miles asked if dead people yelling at him happened a lot and Hurley said that it happened enough. Miles asked if Hurley listened to whatever they say, and Hurley answered that dead people were more reliable than alive people. Richard packed up and Kate asked, "Where are you going". Richard asked Ben if there was still grenades or explosives back at the Barracks and when Ben answered that there were, Richard said that the Barracks was where they were heading next. Kate said, "Maybe we should actually talk about this".
Richard responded "Talk. There's no time for talk but if you know what we need to do, if you know how we stop that thing from leaving the island without blowing up that plane up, let's hear it. Let's all hear it". Hurley said that he knew what to do and when Richard asked what it was. Hurley answered that they have to go talk to the monster and Ben asked Hurley if he was trying to get them killed.
Claire said "Yeah, Hurley. What could possibly make you think that going to Locke's a good idea". Hurley said that it was Jacob's idea and Richard asked if Jacob was here now. Hurley said that he was, and Richard asked Hurley to prove that Jacob was there to ask Richard what the island was. Hurley went over to Richard and said that he didn't have to prove anything and that he was either coming with them or continuing to keep trying to blow stuff up. Richard said that Hurley was lying, and that Jacob isn't telling them what to do because he never tells them what to do. Richard then said that he's gonna make it simple and if the monster leaves the island, then everything's over. Richard then said that he's destroying the plane and could use all the help he could get. Richard asked who was coming with him and Ben said that he was. Miles also agreed to help because he saw the monster attack the Temple and know it doesn't want to talk. Richard asked if anyone else was coming and Lapidus shook his head. Claire got up and said "We are. We're going with you Richard".
Richard responded, "Thank you".
Claire said "That thing is a liar. It doesn't want to help us. It told me that the Others had Aaron for three years. I fought every day to get him back. But it turned out to be all a lie. If you think that going to Locke's, the best idea then we can't come with. I'm not putting my son in that danger".
Kate said "But Richard's going to get off the plane. If you blow it up, Aaron will have no chance to go home".
Claire said "I'm his mother. And I'm keeping him safe. And if that means an eternity on this island then I'm glad because he's the most important thing to me".
Kate accepted this and said "Sorry, Richard. If Jacob says we go talk to Locke, we go talk to Locke. I'm going with Hurley".
Hurley asked Kate "Really".
Kate nodded and Richard told them to not get in their way. Richard, Ben, Miles, Carole, and Claire with Aaron left and Kate said "All right Hurley. Let's go talk to Locke".
Hurley, Kate, and Lapidus walked through the jungle and Lapidus thought he might have made a mistake and should have gone with the other group to blow up the plane. Hurley told Kate "So, what do you think we should say to Locke when we get there. I mean, how do you break the ice with the smoke monster".
Kate responded "I wouldn't worry about it. Something tells me he's gonna do most of the talking".
Hurley said, "Or he could just kill us all".
Kate said "Yeah, he could. That's why Claire didn't come with us. Make sure that he didn't kill Aaron".
Hurley turned and admitted "I didn't see Jacob back there. I just said it because I wanted everyone to listen to me".
Kate responded, "I know".
Hurley asked "Then why'd you come with me. Why did you not go with Richard like Claire".
Kate answered "Ever since Juliet died, ever since I got her killed, in fact it's been ever since they found out I wasn't Aaron's mother. All I've wanted was to fix it. All of it. But I can't. I can't ever fix it". She then said "You know it's been so hard to accept things, accept when I'm not involved, accept others making decisions. But I think maybe, that's the point. Maybe I'm supposed to just let things be how they're supposed to be".
Hurley responded, "Unless you letting things be gets us killed. Going to see Locke was my idea, not Jacob's".
Kate said "Hurley, you asked me to trust you. This is me trusting you".
Hurley responded "Well, it's a good thing you do. Because I have no idea where I'm going".
Kate responded "I believe it you. I believe in you as I believe in Claire doing what's best for Aaron. I believe in my friends".
Kate, Hurley, and Lapidus heard rustling before hearing whispers and Hurley realised what the whispers were. Lapidus asked what they were, and Hurley told them both to wait there. Hurley goes out into the jungle in search of Micheal. Hurley asks Micheal if he is stuck on the island and Micheal answers that he is because of what he did. Hurley asked if the whispers were people like Micheal and Micheal answered that they were the people that can't move on. Hurley wants to know where the monster is, and Micheal points out where the camp is. Hurley asks if there is anything he can do to help Micheal and Micheal tells him to not get himself killed. Hurley accepted this and Micheal asked Hurley to tell Libby if he ever saw her again that he was very sorry. Hurley agreed to this.
The monster returns to his camp and Sayid asks how Desmond is, but the monster tells him that they don't have to worry about him anymore. Sawyer came over to the monster and asked where he had been. The monster answered that he had been for a walk and Sawyer retorted that now the monster had stretched his legs maybe he can. Sawyer immediately got distracted by Hurley's arrival. Hurley wants to talk to the monster and when the monster asks, we Hurley says that there are other people with him and that they both have weapons, but he doesn't want either side to get hurt or killed. Hurley says that they aren't gonna do anything and wants the monsters word that he won't do anything either. The monster gets his knife out and says that he has his word. Hurley told Kate and Lapidus to come out and Kate and Lapidus appear. The monster says "Hello Kate. I'm happy to see you. I thought that you would have brought Claire, her mother, and her son with you".
Kate said, "They don't want to be here".
The monster remarked "There loss. And fortunately for us, they're not needed. Everybody that is needed is right here, right now".
Kate went over to Sawyer and was about to say something when Sawyer stopped her and said "Kate. I want you to know that I don't want you to suffer. I'm sorry for saying that and I didn't mean it".
Kate responded "I know. You were just hurt, and I understand. You lost the love of your life, and I am responsible for that".
Sawyer said "So am I. I not only kept her on this island because I didn't want to be alone, but my actions didn't suggest that I was over you. That she was the only one I loved. If I did then I know she'd still be here. I tried to act like we were before we left but we've both changed since then. We're not the same people that we were on that helicopter. I do want us to try and to find some way to be friends because I want that".
Kate said, "I want that to".
Sawyer asked, "Where's Claire, the kid, and her mother".
Kate answered, "Not in front of Locke". Sawyer accepted this and they both went away from the monster.
