Kate ripped a piece of shirt while sitting next to Sawyer and Hurley looking out at the ocean and pulled a piece of thread from it. She knew that she had to stitch herself up like she did to Jack when she first crashed. She put it into her skin and felt the pain. Hurley and Sawyer turned to her and knew what she was doing. Kate continued to stitch herself up. They all watched the wreckage from the submarine wash ashore and when Kate was finished, she stood up and said "Locke killed them. Sayid said that to stop him we'd need Desmond. Let's go get him". Hurley and Sawyer accepted this and followed Kate into the jungle heading to the well that Desmond was trapped in.
Ben, Richard, Miles, Carole, and Claire carrying Aaron. Miles asked if Ben was sure if this was a shortcut. Carole remarked "Yeah, we've been walking for days".
Ben answered "I lived in these houses a long time. I think I can remember how to get there". Miles said that he lived in the Barracks thirty years before he did or otherwise known as last week. Ben said that it was a good thing that they were following them. Richard asked how much explosives Ben had access to, and Ben answered that it was enough to destroy the plane ten times over and keep it from ever leaving the island. Richard asked if it was still there, and Ben said that it was C4, and he put thought into hiding it. Miles guessed cookie jar and Ben answered that it was in his secret room behind a bookcase.
They arrived and Carole remarked "We're back here".
Claire said, "I haven't been back since my house exploded".
Carole asked, "Your house exploded".
Claire said "Aaron. Look. You see that house right there".
Aaron answered "No".
Claire said, "The rubble". Aaron nodded and Claire said "That was our house. When we lived here".
Aaron asked, "We lived here mummy".
Claire answered "Yeah, towards the end. Right before we were separated. I thought it was the start of a real life we were going to have together. I guess I was wrong. It was the last place we were together. The last time I was your mummy".
Aaron said, "You're still my mummy".
Claire smiled and said "Aaron, I need your help. I can't go down there alone. It's too hard".
Aaron said, "Don't worry mummy, I'm here".
Claire said "Thank you. Thank you, my little sweetheart".
Aaron grabbed Charlie's ring and said, "You're never alone mummy".
Claire looked down at it and responded "You're right Aaron. We're not". Claire hugged Aaron.
Ben said "All right. Let's go collect these explosives before we stop Locke".
They walk until Miles senses Alex and when Ben asked what was wrong, Miles answered that he gets wonky around dead stuff. Ben asked if Miles wanted to share, and Miles didn't because it was Alex and Richard told Ben that it was Alex. Richard then said that after Ben left, he buried Alex. Ben thanked Richard for this. They enter Ben's old house and the secret room. Miles sees the wall filled with hieroglyphs and asked Ben if it was a secreter room and Ben answers that it was where he was told he could summon the monster before he realised that it was summoning him. Ben opens the safe and Richard insists that they need to blow it to hell, so Ben takes it all. They hear noises outside and see Zoe. They aim their guns at her and ask who she is and Charles answers that she's with him. Charles says hello to Ben and asked if he could come in. Ben asked what Charles was doing here and Charles told Ben to put the gun down before telling Zoe to go to the dock and grab their equipment before sinking the outrigger. Zoe agreed and Ben refused to let her go and told Charles to answer him. Charles responded that if he shot him then his last chance of survival would be gone. Charles then told Zoe to go because Ben wasn't going to do anything, and she left. Charles asked Richard what he was doing here and Richard answered that they were grabbing explosives to blow up the plane on Hydra Island. Charles asked why they would do that, and Ben said that it was none of Charles's business. Charles said that he had the plane rigged to blow since he arrived and as usual was three steps ahead of him. Ben asked "How did you get back here, Charles. Last time you called me, you were terrified because I was coming back to the island. And you still couldn't".
Charles responded "I was never afraid Benjamin, especially of you. And if you wanna know why I'm here. Jacob invited me". Ben called it a lie because he's never seen Jacob and Charles said that he has. Jacob visited him after Ben's people destroyed his freighter. Jacob convinced Charles of the error of his ways and told him everything Charles needed to know for this exact purpose.
Carole exclaimed "Okay, can someone tell me who this is".
Claire answered "This is Charles Widmore mother. He's the man that blew up my house and tried to kill me and my son".
Charles responded, "As I said, I've seen the error of my ways".
Claire said "You also put that plane on the bottom of the Ocean. The fake Oceanic 815".
Carole asked "So he's the man. He did that. He created the story for the Oceanic six".
Charles said "Actually Ms Littleton. The Oceanic six used my story, the story I created to come back here for their own benefit. So, they could come back to the world and not answer the questions of where everybody was and lie about Ms Austen being his mother".
Carole said "You knew. You knew all along that Kate had my grandson and you kept it to yourself".
Charles said "I was gonna use it to force them to bring me back here, but Jacob came to me and told me to wait for the proper moment. That I would come back to the island and help him, all I needed to do was nothing until they went back to the island. And if it's any consolation Ms Littleton it was honestly the stupidest thing they could have said. Like all I needed to do was force a blood test and the Oceanic six would become my puppets. But that's what happens when someone's only concern is her own happiness and willing to abduct a child to get it".
Claire asked, "So, Jacob's the reason Kate was allowed to take my baby".
Charles said, "It was for the greater good Miss Littleton".
Claire retorted "Greater good. I lost my son because of the greater good".
Charles responded, "You have your son back now, don't you". Claire knew this was true but hated that she missed out on three years with Aaron.
Ben asked, "What purpose are you here for Charles".
Zoe called Charles and said that the monster was coming and when Charles asked if he'd seen her, he told her that he hadn't. Zoe then said that she hadn't been able to get their stuff, and Charles told her to get back to Ben's house. Zoe went back to Ben's house and Charles said that they needed to hide.
Kate told Hurley and Sawyer "Judging by where we are, we should be an hour away from the well".
Sawyer asked Kate "If Locke wanted Desmond dead, why didn't he just kill him".
Kate responded "Who knows. Maybe it's one of his rules".
Sawyer said, "The bomb on the sub. You said he couldn't kill us".
Kate told him "I've been wrong before".
Sawyer said, "I killed them, didn't I".
Kate responded "No. No, you didn't. He killed them. Locke was the one that did everything, he wanted us dead and give us an impossible choice. It's his fault".
Hurley saw child Jacob who walked up to him and demanded his ashes. Hurley asked who he was, and child Jacob demanded the ashes that Hurley took from Illan's things after she died. Hurley asked why and child Jacob said that they were his. Hurley asked what he wanted them for, and child Jacob took the ashes and ran. Hurley chased after child Jacob until he found Jacob and Hurley asked where Jacob had been because he was waiting for him to show up. Jacob said that he was here now, and Hurley asked if he saw the kid that ran by here with Jacob's ashes. Jacob said that his ashes were in the fire and when it burns out, he'll never see him again. Hurley was shocked by this and Jacob told Hurley to get his friends because they were close to the end. The monster gets onto the dock and sees the outrigger filled with equipment when Zoe enters the house, and Charles tells her that Ben has a secret room that they need to enter. Charles asked what Ben was waiting for and Ben said that he wasn't interested in hiding and he's going to find Ben sooner or later. Miles said that he was going to go with surviving and that they were going to run away. Ben told Miles to wait and asks Charles for his walkie talkie. Ben gave one to Miles and said that it was in case Ben needed him. Charles told Ben that the monster was going to kill him, and Ben said to Charles that it was goodbye. Aaron asked, "What do we do mummy".
Claire answered "We're running. We're running as fast as we can because if he's coming here and he's mad". Claire stopped before saying "I'll protect you baby; mummy will protect you".
Ben asked Richard if he cared to join Ben outside while he waited for the monster. Richard said that he knew the monster and was going to talk to him. All the monster wants is for Richard to join him and if he can get the monster to leave with him, then it might give the rest of them a chance. Miles said, "Good luck with that" before saying to Carole, Claire, and Aaron "Come on, we've got to go". Miles, Carole, and Claire with Aaron ran out of the house and into the jungle. Richard went outside Richard and Ben leave the house and Richard is immediately thrown by the monster before he goes and talks to Ben about the monster wanting him to kill people because once he leaves the island, Ben can have the island. The monster wants to know whose outrigger it is, and Ben confesses that it's Charles Widmore's who is hiding in his closet. Ben leads the monster to Charles Widmore and Zoe who he wants to talk to and after Charles Widmore tells Zoe not to talk, the monster slices Zoe's throat. The monster threatens Penny if Charles Widmore doesn't talk, and he relents telling him that Desmond was a measure of last resort. Charles Widmore will not speak in front of Ben but does whisper it to the monster but is immediately shot by Ben because he does not get to save his daughter. The monster isn't mad because Charle Widmore already said everything he needed to know, and they both left with Ben following the monster.
Hurley led everyone back and Jacob said, "hello Kate. James". Hurley told them that he was right there by the fire and says hello.
Kate responds "Hurley. I heard him".
Hurley is shocked to hear this and asked "What, you can see him".
Kate answers "Yeah. I see him".
Hurley asks "Sawyer, you to". Sawyer nods.
Kate asks Jacob "So, you're the one that wrote our names on that dial". Jacob answered that he is, and Kate asked, "Sun and Jin Kwon and Sayid Jarrah, you wrote their names on that dial to". Jacob answered that he did, and Kate asked if that was why they're dead. Jacob said he was sorry, and Kate retorted that he was sorry. Hurley tried to stop Kate, but Kate said that she wanted to know why and wanted to know that Sun, Jin, and Sayid didn't die for nothing. Jacob told them to sit down, and he'd tell them what they did for. Jacob said he's answer why he chose them, and he chose Sawyer, Kate, and Hurley. And then he would tell them everything they needed to know about protecting the island because when by the time the fire burns out, one of them will be protecting the island. Jacob said that he didn't know where to start and Hurley suggested telling them why he brought them to the island. Jacob answered that he brought them all here because he made a mistake and because of that there's a very good chance that every single one of them and everyone they ever cared about is about to die. Sawyer asked what mistake he made, and Jacob answered that it was the monster and he's responsible for what happened to him, he made him the way he is. Jacob then said that ever since the monster's been trying to kill him. And it was only a mater of time when he figured out how, and when he did, Jacob needed a replacement. Jacob said that was the reason he brought them here. Sawyer asked why he had to be punished for Jacob's mistake, and what made him think he could mess with his life because he was doing fine until Jacob brought him to the island. Jacob said that he wasn't and none of them were. Jacob said that he didn't take them from a happy existence, they were all flawed and he chose them because they were like him. They were all alone and looking for something that they couldn't find out there. He chose them because they needed the island and much as it needs them. Kate asked "Why did you cross my name out on that dial in your lighthouse. I saw many names and my name was crossed off. Why". Jacob answered that it was because she became a mother. Kate retorted "Look where that got me".
Jacob answered, "It got you where you needed to be. You needed it, Kate. You needed to become who you are now".
Kate retorted "That still doesn't excuse the time that Claire missed out with her son. The time I took Aaron away from his mother".
Jacob said "No. But they're together now. They're together and where they're supposed to be". He then said "But it was just a line of chalk on a dial. The jobs yours if you want it, Kate".
Hurley asked, "What is the job".
Jacob told them all that there was a light at the centre of the island. They had to make sure it never went out because that's how they protect the island. Sawyer said that the monster said there was nothing to protect the island from and Jacob answered that they had to protect it from him. Jacob tells them that they have to do what he couldn't. What he wasn't able to do. Kate said, "You want us to kill him". Jacob gave her a look which told her that was what he meant, and she then asked, "Is that even possible".
Jacob responded, "I hope so because he is certainly going to try and kill you". Hurley asked how Jacob was going to pick and Jacob answered that he wasn't because he wants them to have a choice. Kate asked what would happen if none of them chooses it and Jacob told her that this ends very badly.
Kate said, "I'll do it". Sawyer was shocked that she said this, and Kate stood up and said "This is why I'm here. This is, this is what I'm supposed to do".
Jacob asked, "Is that a question, Kate".
Kate answered "No".
Jacob responded "Good. Then it's time".
Jacob led Kate to the stream and Sawyer remarked to Hurley "You ever expected this". Hurley responded by saying he was glad it wasn't him.
Jacob said to Kate "You remember that bamboo field near the beach you crashed here on".
Kate answered "Yeah".
Jacob said "Beyond that field, across a ridge, is the heart of the island. That's where the light is. That's where he's trying to go. And that's what you have to protect".
Kate said "Pass the bamboo. I've been there many times and there's nothing out there".
Jacob said "Yes, there is, Kate. And now you'll be able to get there". He then asked Kate "Do you have a cup".
Kate answered "No".
Jacob said, "Grab that leave".
Kate grabbed the leave and passed it to Jacob. Jacob grabbed some water into his palm and spoke Latin. He then dipped the leaf into the water and scooped some water into it. Jacob told her "Drink this".
Kate asked, "How long am I gonna have to do this job".
Jacob answered, "As long as you can". Kate drank all the water becoming the protector of the island and Jacob put his hand on her shoulder and said "Now, you're like me".
Ben and the monster go to the well but cannot find Desmond inside, the monster is happy that Sayid didn't kill Desmond because he was a failsafe in case, he managed to kill every other candidate. The monster then tells Ben that Desmond can help him destroy the island.
