Kate stood in the water and looked at the sky. Sawyer came over to her and asked, "You okay".
Kate answered "Yeah, James. You".
Sawyer said, "Well Freckles, to be honest, I'm kinda wondering what the hell just happened up here".
Kate laughed and said "Same".
Sawyer asked "So, you're the new Jacob, huh. Because I gotta say this version looks a lot better than the previous one".
Kate responded "Thanks".
Sawyer asked, "Feel any different".
Kate answered, "Not really".
Sawyer remarked "You know if any one of us was gonna become the new Jacob I'd always put my money on the doc, but you know what, you're the best choice Freckles".
Kate responded, "Thanks James".
Sawyer told her "Well, leader, how about you come down from the mountaintop and tell us what the burning bush had to say for itself".
Kate and Sawyer went back to Hurley and Kate said, "Jacob told me that we have to go to the bamboo forest out past our old camp. Just past it, well, he said I'd find the place that we need to protect".
Hurley asked, "And what is it, that we need to protect".
Kate answered, "He called it the heart of the island. All he said that it is, it's a light".
Hurley asked, "And that Locke smoke thing wants to put it out".
Kate answered "Yeah, he'll try".
Hurley asked "So, what if he does".
Kate answered, "Then that's it for all of us".
Sawyer said "And I'm guessing he hasn't been able to because he hasn't got Desmond. That's where we were headed before your inauguration Freckles. Sayid said Locke tossed him in a well".
Kate responded, "Jacob didn't say anything to me about Desmond".
Sawyer responded, "Doesn't sound like he said anything about anything".
Hurley said "That's kinda true, dude. He's worse than Yoda".
Sawyer to them that they would go to the heart of the island while he got Desmond out of the well. Kate said, "I'd leave a trail for you to follow".
Sawyer responded, "And this time I'll follow it".
Kate said, "Then be safe, James".
Sawyer responded, "What, you don't wanna ignore me and come".
Kate answered, "I have more important stuff to do".
Sawyer responded "all right, all mighty leader. Us mere mortals cannot possibly understand the endless work you are burdened with".
Kate joked "You couldn't before". Sawyer smiled and went out to get Desmond. Hurley remarked that he had a bad feeling about this.
Kate and Hurley went to the heart of the island and Hurley asked Kate "So, we've come along way since we both awoke in the lagoon".
Kate answered "Yeah, and we've come even further since we crashed here".
Hurley asked "Is that why you took the job. Is it what Jacob told you, because he said that having Aaron".
Kate interrupted "It was not that. Having Aaron was the worst thing I've ever done in my life and no matter what Jacob thought, I still took him from his mother. I took the job so I could get them home. Locke's a danger to them and they need to get home. I ruined their lives; I need to be the one to save them". Hurley accepted this and they both continued on their way to the heart of the island.
Sawyer sees the monster at the well but is stopped by Ben. Ben takes him to the monster and sees that Desmond isn't there. Sawyer informs them that they were no longer candidates before taking Ben's gun and running away. Ben then asks about the monster destroying the island and the monster answers that he lied about Ben being in charge but will allow him to come on his boat off the island. The monster than realises that nearby are dog tracks. Desmond awakes at Rose and Bernards cabin and is given a drink before Rose tells him to leave after breakfast because they are through with drama. The monster wants to take Desmond and Desmond agrees as long as Rose and Bernard aren't hurt. The monster leads them until he hears Ben's walkie go off and wants to know what it is, but Ben tells him that it's nothing. The monster accepts this, and they continue. Miles tries to contact Ben because he's found Richard. Richard awoke and wanted to know what happened. Miles answered that Richard thought it was a good idea to talk to the black smoke and it threw him into the jungle. Richard asked if the monster was still here, and Miles told him that he wasn't. Miles said that he's been trying to contact Ben, but Ben wouldn't answer. Miles wanted to get Richard help, but Richard asked if Miles still had the explosives. Miles answered that he did and wanted to know why and Richard said that they still had to blow up the plane. Sawyer went back to Kate and Sawyer and scared Hurley when he returned. Sawyer said "Easy, Bigfoot. It's just me". He then told them "I found Locke. Son of a bitch said he's gonna destroy the island. You had it right, Kate. Good news is, Desmond got out of that well, so if we can find him before Smokey can".
Kate said "It doesn't matter if we find Desmond, or he does, James. We're all going to the same place anyway".
Sawyer asked, "Then what".
Kate answered, "Then it ends".
Richard, Miles, Carole, Claire, and Aaron made it to the outrigger. Richard remarked that it's gonna be a hell of a storm and Miles said to Richard welcome to the club. Richard was confused by this, and Miles plucked a hair from Richard's head showing him his first grey hair. Richard stared at it in amazement and when Miles asked what Richard was smiling about Richard answered that he just realised that he wants to live. Miles remarked that it was good timing. Miles, Richard, Carole, and Claire rowed to Hydra Island when they hit something, and Richard wondered what it was. Miles turned to see that it was the captain of the submarine's body and Claire grabbed Aaron and held him close to her and told him "Don't look baby, you don't need to look".
Aaron asked, "mummy what is it".
Claire said, "You don't need to know baby, you don't need to know".
They then all heard Lapidus calling out for help and Carole asked, "What was that". They then all Lapidus calling to them.
Richard told "Hey, up ahead".
They rowed to Lapidus who weakly called out to him. Miles and Richard got Lapidus into the outrigger and laid him between them. Miles told Richard to get Lapidus water. Carole said "Here" and handed Richard some. Lapidus asked what they were doing out here and Richard answered that they were going to blow up the plane. Lapidus asked why they were going to do that for and Richard said that it was because the monster wants to get off the island and they have to stop him. Lapidus said that if they left then the monster wouldn't have a plane to leave on anymore. Richard asked how they were going to do that and Lapidus said that he was the pilot. They were all delighted to hear this and Carole exclaimed "Finally someone's thinking with common sense".
Aaron asked Claire "Mummy are we really leaving".
Claire answered, "Yeah baby, we're going home".
Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley continued until they ran into the monster, Ben, and Richard. The monster remarked that this was going to be interesting. The monster asked "So, Kate. You're the new Jacob".
Kate answered "Yeah, It's me".
The monster responded "Now, I know Jacob wouldn't have chosen someone I'd expect but you, you're the worst possible choice I could've ever imagined. What was Jacob thinking when he chose you".
Kate said "He didn't choose me. I volunteered".
The monster said, "I assume you are here to stop me".
Kate said "I can't stop you. In fact, I, I want to come with you".
The monster responded, "I'm sorry, Kate. I think you're a little confused about what I came here to do".
Kate responded "No I'm not. No, you're going to the far side of the bamboo forest, to the place that I've sworn I'll protect. And then you'll think you destroy the island".
The monster asked, "I think".
Kate said, "That's right. Because that's not what's gonna happen".
The monster asked, "Then what's gonna happen, Kate".
Kate answered "I'm gonna kill you".
The monster asked, "How do you plan to do that".
Kate answered, "That's a surprise".
The monster accepted and said "Okay. Then let's get on with it".
The monster led them, and Sawyer asked "So, Freckles. Are you going to share with us, how you're gonna kill Locke. What's your surprise".
Kate answered "Desmond".
Sawyer asked, "How's that gonna work".
Kate answered, "I'm not sure yet". She then said, "I don't believe Jacob, would've brought him all the way back to this island just so Locke could make him destroy it".
Sawyer asked "So what. Desmond's bait".
Kate responded, "No. I think he's a weapon".
Sawyer remarked "Well, if that's the case Freckles, it's a hell of a long con".
The monster led them to the edge of the bamboo forest, and he said "Kate. Desmond. It should just be the three of us from here on".
Kate and Desmond accepted and began to follow the monster. Hurley went up to Kate and said, "I believe it you, dude". Kate accepted and followed the monster.
The monster heard thunder and looked to the sky and said that it was gonna be a bad one. The monster led them to the heart of the island and said that they were there. The monster tied a rope around a tree and Kate tied the other end around Desmond. Desmond told her "This doesn't matter you know".
Kate asked "What".
Desmond said, "Him destroying the island, you destroying him. It doesn't matter. I mean, you're gonna lower me into that light, and I'm gonna go somewhere else. A place where we can be with the ones that we love and not have to ever think about this damn island again. And you know the best part, Kate".
Kate asked, "You're in this place. I saw you on Oceanic 815. I was on it. You were still going to prison, but I know it was all gonna work out. And you wanna know why. I was sitting next to Jack. It never crashed. I spoke to him, and he was happy. You know, maybe I can find a way to bring you there, too".
Kate responded "Desmond, I tried that once. There are no shortcuts, no do overs. What happened, happened. Trust me, I know. All of this matters".
The monster come over to them and wanted to know if they were ready. Kate and Desmond were both ready and they all entered and looked below at the light.
Sawyer, Hurley, and Ben were waiting for Kate to kill the monster when Miles called Ben. Sawyer asked what it was, and Ben asked where Miles was. Miles answered that they were on Hydra Island and on their way to the plane. Ben told Miles to not blow up the plane and Miles answered that they weren't and gonna fly it off the island. Miles then told Ben to get over to Hydra Island. Ben then turned to Sawyer and said, "I think we have a way off the island".
Sawyer grabbed it and said "Enos, you better hold on to we get there, or I swear I'll kill you myself".
Miles turned to everyone and said, "James said that they'll be here shortly".
Lapidus grabbed the walkie and said "Well, you better get your arses over here because I wanna be off this island as soon as possible got it".
Sawyer responded, "We got it Franky boy, we'll be there soon". Sawyer then hung up.
Lapidus said "Well, we don't have a moment to waste. Let's get going". They all made their way to the plane.
The monster said to Kate "all right, we lower him down nice and easy".
Kate asked Desmond "You know what to do once you get down there".
Desmond answered "Aye. I'll go where the light's brightest".
Kate said, "Good luck, Desmond. Try not to die".
Desmond responded, "You to, sister".
Desmond positioned himself and Kate and the monster slowly lowered him down. The monster asked, "This remind you of anything, Kate".
Kate asked "What".
The monster answered "Desmond going into a hole in the ground. You and me together at the Hatch when I lowered you down".
Kate told him "You're not John Locke. You disrespect his memory by wearing his face, but you're nothing like him. Turns out he was right about most everything. I just wish I could've seen it like Jack did".
The monster responded "He wasn't right about anything, Kate. And Jack didn't see that. He saw himself. A failure. That's why he jumped off that bridge. And you'll realise that you to are a failure just like them when the island drops into the ocean, and you drop with it".
Kate responds "Well, we'll just have to see which one of us is right, then". Desmond is completely lowered down, and they both look down staring at the light.
Lapidus, Miles, Richard, Carole, Claire, and Aaron made it to the plane. Lapidus said "all right. I'm gonna need all of your help to get her in the air".
Claire said "You do that. I'll get Aaron on the plane". Claire picked Aaron up and ran up the stairs. She entered the plane and lowered Aaron onto the seat. Claire said, "Now baby, you sit here, and mummy be right after she helps fix this plane".
Aaron grabbed Claire and said, "No mummy don't go".
Claire turned back and said "Aaron. I know you've been through a lot. And I know you scared. Mummy doesn't blame you. You have every right to be terrified. But you are safe. Mummy would never put you in danger. And I understand why you've clung to me for the past couple of days. I understand. And I thank you for having that trust in me, but you need to know that I'll be back for you. Mummy will always come back for you. I love you Aaron and I will never leave you. So, I need you to trust me that I'll come back. That I'm not going anywhere. That we'll never be apart again. Do you understand". Aaron nodded and let Claire go. Claire said "Good boy. Now mummy has trust in you to and wants you to look after this until she comes back. Will you look after daddy's ring for mummy".
Aaron nodded and said, "I will mummy".
Claire placed the ring necklace around his neck and hugged him saying, "I love you, Aaron. Mummy will always love you".
Aaron responded, "I love you to, mummy". Claire smiled at him before leaving to help and Aaron stared at Charlie's ring.
Desmond took off the rope tied around him and made his way past the skeletons to the pool. He entered and felt severe agonising pain and screamed in pain which was heard by Kate and the monster. Desmond forward towards the rock cork. Desmond used all his strength to rip it out and as he stepped back with the cork out, he heard the light rumble, and it began to flash. Desmond climbed out and a red smoking light emitted from where the light was. Desmond knew he wasn't going back to Penny and angry that he was wrong and wasn't. The monster knew that Kate had failed and said to her "It looks like you were wrong. Goodbye Kate". The island began to rumble and collapse. Kate tackled the monster and punched him. She saw that he was bleeding and knew that he was mortal.
Kate remarked "Looks like, you were wrong, too". Kate began to strangle the monster, but he grabbed a rock and whacked her in the head. The monster then ran away.
The collapsing island sent Ben, Hurley, and Sawyer to the ground and Ben saw that a tree was about to collapse on Hurley so pushed him out of the way. The tree collapsed and trapped Ben. Kate awoke and saw that it was now raining. Kate went inside to check on Desmond. Kate called down "Desmond" and she raised the rope but knew he wasn't tied to it and screamed "Desmond". Kate then ran out and chased after the monster.
Sawyer and Hurley tried to get the branch off of Ben and Hurley said "Don't worry Ben. We're gonna save you". Sawyer said that it was too heavy, and Hurley said that they had to try.
Sawyer agreed and said "Okay. Okay. On three. One. Two. Three". They both tired to lift it off Ben but then the island shook again. Sawyer then exclaimed "Damn it. Locke was right. This island's going down".
Miles tried to contact Ben and Sawyer picked it up and asked, "What is it Enos".
Miles asked "Boss, what the hell is happening".
Sawyer answered "The island's collapsing. We need to get off this bitch soon".
The island shook again, and Miles asked how much longer it was until the plane was ready to fly. Lapidus said that he still had the electricals and hydraulics to check. Lapidus said that would take five or maybe six hours. Richard said that Lapidus maybe had one. Miles screamed for them to get their arses over to Hydra Island because they were leaving in an hour. Sawyer exclaimed son of a bitch and asked how they were gonna get over there. Ben said that he knew because the monster had a boat. The monster arrives at the cliffs with Desmond's boat just below and as he's about to climb down the ladder. Kate screams "Locke". The monster got out his knife and they both ran to each other to attack. Kate leaped onto the monster making him drop his knife and they both ran to each other and Kate punched the monster down. They fought until the island began to shake and the monster went for his knife. Kate tackled him to stop him grabbing it and began strangling him. The monster grabbed his knife and stabbed Kate in her side. Locke then climbed over her and attempted to stab her, but she caught his arm and used every bit of her strength to keep the monster from stabbing her. The monster cut into her neck a little and said "I want you to know, Kate. You die for nothing".
Sawyer, Ben, and Hurley came over to them and upon seeing this Sawyer fired three shots into the monster's back and said "You forgot one thing Locke. She not alone". Locke fell over and died. Kate get up and goes to Sawyer and they hug. He tells her "It's okay Freckles, you're safe now. I've got you, It's over".
The storm ended and Sawyer helped Kate up the cliffs until Kate collapsed. Ben and Hurley rushed over to them Kate looked at her wound. She told them "It's all right. I'm fine. Just a little cut". They all took it in that the monster was finally dead and it was over when the island continued to collapse.
Sawyer remarked "I hate to say it, but it's not over".
The island shook and Aaron asked Claire who was holding him "Mummy, what's happening. I'm scared".
Claire responded "It's okay baby. It's okay. I'm here. I'm here. We're gonna be okay".
Lapidus checked out his job on the window and said that it wasn't pretty but that it'd work. Lapidus tries to reset the electronics when he realises there is something wrong with the hydraulics. Miles and Richard go to fix it as Ben contacts Lapidus and wants to know how it's going but he doesn't want to be bothered. Ben remarks to Kate, Hurley, and Sawyer that the people at the plane are making progress. Sawyer said that they had to go now, and Kate said "Shit. I thought Locke's death would end this but, I need to back on whatever Desmond turned off. But if it doesn't work, you all need to leave now. You need to be on that plane".
Sawyer responded "You can come with us Freckles; you don't need to do this. You can let the island sink".
Kate responded "You know I can't James, you know I can't. You once told me that this was the only place I'd ever be free. How there was nothing for me out there. Well, you were right".
Sawyer responded, "I didn't mean it like that".
Kate interrupted "You were right. I never should have left. There's nothing for me out there and I need to protect the only thing I have left. You think you can get that boat across the channel in time".
Sawyer responded "Kate, please don't do this".
Kate pleaded "James, can you".
Sawyer answered "Yeah, I can manage".
Kate then hugged Sawyer and told him "Get them off for me James, make sure you get them home".
Sawyer knew she was referring to Carole, Claire, and Aaron and answered "Of course Kate. I'll get them home".
Kate accepted and said "Good". Ben then threw the walkie talkie to Sawyer and said that if the island's going down then he's going down with it.
Kate turned to Hurley and said, "Come on Hurley, you gotta go".
Hurley responded "Uh huh. No way. You think I'm going down that. I'm with you dude".
Kate accepted and said "Okay".
Hurley got up and turned to Sawyer. He said, "Good luck Sawyer".
Sawyer responded, "You to Hugo, you take care of her for me". Hurley accepted this and Kate, Ben, and Hurley journeyed back to the heart of the island. Miles and Richard repair the hydraulics and are about to check when Sawyer tells Richard "Yo Chesty. It's Sawyer". Richard answered and Sawyer said "I'm on my way down to the sailboat, then I'm heading to you. Don't leave without me".
Lapidus grabbed the walkie talkie and said that they were getting off the ground while there was still ground to get off. He then said that he needed to get over there as quickly as possible. Lapidus threw the walkie talkie down and Sawyer tried to talk to him but didn't get an answer. Sawyer knew he had to get over there quickly and dove into the water before swimming to the boat.
Hurley helped Kate back to the heart of the island and she told him "It's over there".
The island rumbled and Hurley asked Kate "How are we getting down there".
Kate answered "We're not. I'm going alone".
Hurley responded "Dude, you can't go down there alone. Desmond didn't make it. How the hell are you gonna survive".
Hurley realised that Kate didn't intend to survive and said "No. No way. I'm not gonna let you die".
Kate responded "Hurley. I'm already dead".
Hurley responded, "You said you'd protect the island".
Kate responded, "And that's what I'm doing".
Hurley said, "You're committing suicide".
Kate said "I'm not. This is the way it has to be. This is what I'm supposed to do".
Hurley responded "You're not supposed to die. The island needs you".
Kate said "Hurley, it needs you".
Hurley asked "What".
Kate said, "It needs to be you, Hurley".
Hurley said "I can't. It's supposed to be you".
Kate said, "It was only supposed to be me, so I could do this. But if someone has to take care of the island, if someone has to protect it, then, then it should be you". She then said "Hurley. I believe in you".
Hurley agreed and said "Alright, I'll take it. But it's only temporary. As soon as you get that light back on, I'm pulling you up and I'm giving it right back to you. Deal".
Kate agreed and said "Deal". The island collapsed some more, and Kate asked "Do you have anything to drink. Anything to drink out of, a, a cup, or a bottle".
Ben said, "I do". Ben passed her the bottle from Oceanic 815 and asked, "Is that okay".
Kate said, "It's perfect".
Kate filled the bottle with water and told Hurley "Drink this".
Hurley drunk the water and after he finished Hurley asked, "Is that it".
Kate put her hand on Hurley's shoulder and said, "Now you're like me".
Lapidus checks the systems, and they work the engines start and Lapidus tells Miles and Desmond that the sound is pure music. Hurley and Ben carefully lower Kate down but as the island collapses more, they drop her to the ground. Kate goes over and finds Desmond. She says "Desmond. Desmond, can you hear me".
Kate turns Desmond over and Desmond says "The light. I put it out. It didn't work. I thought I'd leave this place".
Kate saw the pool where Desmond took the cork out before turning back to Desmond and said "I've got you. Come on. Come on".
Kate helped Desmond up and he said, "I'm still here. You were right, Kate".
Kate responded "Yeah, well, there's a first time for everything".
The island collapsed more, and Desmond said "I have to put it back. It was like a drain".
Kate asked "That's what you did. You took that stone out of that hole over there".
Desmond tried to stop her and said "Kate, you can't. Listen. Even if you turn it back on, it'll kill ya. It has to be me".
Kate told Desmond "Desmond. You've done enough. You wanna do something. Go home and be with your wife and son".
Desmond asked, "What about you, Kate".
Kate answered "My time's over. But I've got one more thing to do before the end".
Sawyer made it to Hydra Island and the island was being destroyed behind him he ran to the plane. Lapidus told Miles to be his eyes while he backed them out of here. Lapidus then told Richard to tell him what Miles says. Lapidus wants to know if they're clear and Miles informs Lapidus that they are. Lapidus then spins the plane around. Lapidus tells them that they are good to go, and Miles closes the door. Richard and Miels get in the cockpit but before Lapidus moves the plane Sawyer comes out in front of them and waves his arms alerting them that he's there. Lapidus then tells Miles and Richard "Boys, we got a late arrival. Open the door". Neither Richard or Miles move and Lapidus tells them "Come on".
Kate makes her way into the pool and uses all her strength to lift the rock and place it back in the hole. Kate falls to the ground and seeing that it didn't work says "No. No".
Miles opens the door for Sawyer and as Sawyer climbs into the plane Miles praises Sawyer for waiting for the last second and Sawyer says that it's good to see him to and calls him Enos. Lapidus remarks that they're running out of time. Richard said, "We got him". Lapidus told everyone to buckle up tight and to hold on.
Lapidus moves the throttle, and Claire says to Aaron "Here we go, baby". Lapidus remarks to himself that he's going now and begins to take off down the runway. The plane speeds down the runway and Claire holds Aaron tight and closes her eyes. Everyone braces for liftoff and just as it's about to Carole grabs Claire's hand. Lapidus tells the plane to come on and the plane takes off. Lapidus seeing that he's off the ground tells himself amen. Everyone knows that they are in the air and are leaving the island.
Aaron looks out the window and asks Claire "Are we going home mummy".
Claire answers "Yeah baby, we're going home. We did it". Claire happily hugs her son before turning to Carole who smiles at her. Sawyer looks out the window and is happy to see the island fading his sight.
Kate is devastated thinking that she failed to save the island when she hears the water coming back into the pool and puts out her hand to feel it. As the water passes her hand and fills the pool turning the light back on. Kate is delighted because she knows that she did it. Ben said "She did it. The light's back on".
Hurley tells Ben to pull, and they both pull the rope up thinking that it's Kate. Hurley tells Kate "Hang on, Kate".
Kate lies in the pool laughing in delight at the light turning back on when they pull Desmond up and Hurley says, "Got her". They realise it's Desmond and Hurley said "Desmond. No". Hurley then screamed down "Kate". The light fully turned back on, and Hurley screamed "Kate". Ben lays Desmond outside the heart of the island and tells Hurley that he thinks Desmond's gonna be okay. Hurley said "Kate's gone. Isn't she". Ben nodded and Hurley began to cry.
Ben said, "She did her job, Hugo". Hurely said that it was his job, and he didn't know what to do. Ben said that Hurley will do what he does best and help people starting with getting Desmond home to Penny and his son Charlie. Hurley asked how because people couldn't leave the island and Ben said that was Jacob's way of running things and maybe there's a better way. Hurley asked Ben's help in running the island for a little while because he had experience. Ben accepted and Hurley was happy to hear this.
Kate awakes on some rocks and slowly into the bamboo forest bleeding out. She goes as far as she can before needing to lie down. Kate then sees Vincent run by and lay besides her. Kate then see Ajira 316 fly above taking his friends off the island for good. Kate smiles at this knowing that she saved them, especially Sawyer, Carole, Claire, and Aaron and closes her eyes for the final time.
