Chapter 1

Harry Potter was with his wife Ginny dropping off his son Albus Severus at platform 9 and ¾. James Jr. was helping his grandfather and namesake unload the luggage as James Sr. still insisted on doing so himself. His best friends Addy Black, Neville, Ronald and Hermione were there too. No one could have foreseen Addy and Neville marrying but one could say Neville's calm balanced out the earthquake Addy was. Their only child Reggie was in James Jr's year and a year older to Rose Weasley, Ron and Hermione's daughter.

As she watched her father hoist her luggage up onto the train, across the platform Rose caught sight of a small family, including a blonde boy who seemed to be around her age. The boy's mother hugged him as Rose noticed the tall man, who she assumed was the boy's father. He gave her Uncle Harry a simple nod of acknowledgement. Rose turned to her parents.

"Who is that?" She asked curiously, gesturing towards the young boy.

Ron looked towards the family and almost growled. Boyhood grudges could be tough to give up. But he was calmed down by Hermione, "They are the Malfoys…. Dragon, Astoria and their son Scorpius"

Hermione rolled her eyes at her husband, a hint of amusement in her eyes "You know it's 'Draco' darling..."

"I know" he grumbled as Rose laughed "Never imagined a sweet girl like Astoria would marry that ass" he said. Hermione smacked him on the head, scolding him for using that kind of language in front of the children.

Rose giggled again as her cousin Reggie walked up to them along with his parents.

"I wholeheartedly agree..." Addy said with a grin as Neville shook his head but gave her an amused smile.

"Addy!" Neville exclaimed, "I can't have you openly agree to things like that about parents of my students" he exhaled out nervously. This had only been his second year as Herbology professor at Hogwarts and he had been pretty scared of McGonagall who despite her advanced age, continued to be a force.

They all chuckled as Neville helped his son Reggie hoist his luggage onto the train. Meanwhile as Rose hugged her parents and brother Hugo goodbye, she snuck another glance at the small family. The boy met her gaze and gave her a small, shy smile. Rose returned it before clearing her throat, looking away and boarding the train alongside her cousins.

Meanwhile James Sr. came and stood beside his son and daughter in law and patted them on the shoulder, "that's another one off…not long before little Lily here will have to join her brothers too" he said fondly, remembering his wife and love of his life Lily Potter who had passed away the previous year due to heart. It had been a great loss for the family.

Harry smiled down at his pouting daughter who held his hand, before turning back to his father. Despite James Sr's composure, Harry knew that there was a great deal of sadness in his heart. "All you all right dad?" Harry asked softly as he watched the train begin to move.

"Yes I am Harry... It just seems so soon and so quickly how time has passed" he replied.

Harry nodded as he placed a hand on his father's shoulder "I know...I miss her too." He said with a sad smile.

James smiled at his son and the family made its way towards the exit.

On the train, Rose and Albus Potter were searching for an empty compartment. They were all full except for one. As Rose slid open the door, she noticed the same blonde boy from the platform sitting by the window with a bag of sweets on his lap. "Hello," she said kindly, "would you mind if we sit here?"

Scorpius looked up at the red-headed girl and shook his head "Not at all!" He smiled.

Rose nodded gratefully as she and Albus stepped inside, taking a seat across from Scorpius. "I'm Rose by the way and this is my cousin Albus." She smiled as Albus gave a small wave with his hand.

"I'm Scorpius," he smiled at the cousins. "Excited about school?"

Rose and Albus nodded when suddenly she heard her father's words playing like a record in her mind. It was something he'd whispered to her on the platform after they had spotted the Malfoys. 'don't get too friendly with him Rosie...'

Albus turned to his cousin who appeared to be suddenly distracted, then shrugged as he eyed the bags of sweets on Scorpius' lap "Are those Pumpkin Pasties?" He asked enthusiastically.

Scorpius looked towards Albus and raised an eyebrow, "yes, want one?"

Rose watched Scorpius give his bag of Pumpkin Pasties over to Albus who gulped them down in one go. "So, what house do you think you'll be in?" She asked Scorpius.

"Slytherin, I think" he replied, "my father said all Malfoys were sorted in Slytherin" he said smiling shyly at her. "What house do you want to get in?"

"Gryffindor." Rose said immediately "Or Ravenclaw...I'd be happy with either house." she smiled.

Swallowing the last bit of his Pumpkin Pastie, Albus spoke up. "My father said that the Sorting Hat takes your choice into account..."

Scorpius looked at Albus skeptically "I have never heard of that…" he mused. He turned towards Rose leaning forward in his seat, "would you like a pastie too?" He smiled.

Rose looked at him with a mix of surprise and gratitude. She had heard various things about the Malfoy family and their involvement in the war. They had been Death Eaters and like most, were often looked down upon because of it. She suddenly wondered what her father would say if he knew that his daughter was having a friendly conversation with Draco Malfoy's son. But she figured that Ron's resentment with the Malfoys was more due to the fact that Draco had been a bully and had made life at school more difficult when her parents and uncle had been students. Yet, here Scorpius Malfoy was being perfectly polite.

"No thank you," she said kindly "I actually prefer..."

"Chocolate." She and Scorpius answered at the same time.

Scorpius smiled at her when they said chocolate together and started rummaging around his bag. When he found what he was looking for he let out an 'aha!' and procured a chocolate frog.

"Here!" He offered her the treat excitedly. "Do you collect the cards?" He asked hopefully. He knew of his father's reputation and it had always been tough for him to make friends, so he was clinging on to hope that he could strike friendship with Rose and Albus.

Rose paused for a moment before smiling back as well. "Thank you. "She said, taking the chocolate frog "I do collect them but I always seem to get…" She stopped as the frog did a leap. Glancing down at the card she sighed " One of my parents..." Hermione's face glanced up at her before disappearing.

"Aww you got Hermione Weasley! I have about five of her, but I never seem to get Harry Potter or Victor Krum…." Scorpius said, his eyes wandering from Rose to the chocolate frog"You should catch it before it jumps out of the window..."

Rose quickly stood and caught the frog in her hand. She lost her balance slightly as the train moved and stumbled onto the seat beside Scorpius. The two blushed, Rose quickly clearing her throat and sitting up.

"Clumsy Rosie, head always in the clouds," Albus teased her as he bit down on a licorice wand.

Scorpius blushed but looked amusedly at Rose who had sent a glare to Albus. He snickered when Albus shrunk a little under the glare, "If your head is in the clouds then you'll surely be sorted into Grytfindor, their dorms are in the seventh floor tower, perfect place for you to stay" he teased

Rose rolled her eyes at the two boys before surprising them both by chuckling softly at Scorpius's the rest of the train ride, the three of them shared sweets and spoke excitedly about Hogwarts. Rose and Albus both found Scorpius to be very pleasant and quite funny. He was also clever as Rose discovered. He'd spent the summer reading some of the same books she had. He especially had a fascination with muggles. Time seemed to pass rapidly as they soon arrived. As they stepped off the train they were greeted by Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper and Care of Magical Creatures Professor.. Rose and Albus knew of him of course, but Scorpius stood murmuring a quiet "woah", glancing up at the Half-giant.

Hagrid then escorted the students to the boats. When they reached the castle, they followed Headmistress McGonagall into the Great Hall. Rose, Albus, And Scorpius stood nervously as they glanced up at the hat which was sat on a stool.

Scorpius looked up at his new friends as his name was called. He shakily went and sat on the three legged stool and donned the Sorting Hat as so many had done before the hat started its musings, Scorpius couldn't help but look for Rose in the crowd of nervous first years, searching for some comfort from his own nervousness. Finally it shouted, "Slytherin!" Scorpius was happy but at the same time he did not miss the look he received from Rose.

Rose met Scorpius' gaze as he made his way over to the Slytherin table. At first she was a bit surprised and somewhat disappointed. If Scorpius was in Slytherin and she was sorted into Gryffindor that meant she and her new friend wouldn't be in the same house. Nonetheless she smiled at him, and watched as the rest of Slytherin House welcomed him. Rose turned her attention back to the front as Albus' name was called. She glanced at her cousin and noticed his nervous hesitation. Nudging him slightly she whispered "Al, go..."

Albus staggered a bit as his cousin nudged him forward. He took a deep breath and slowly made his way over to the stool.

"Slytherin!" The Sorting Hat called out after much deliberation and Albus could see how that revelation had affected the people in the Great Hall. A Potter in Slytherin! He shakily made his way towards the table decorated with green and silver banners where Scorpius smiled at him encouragingly and asked him to sit beside him.

Rose was taken aback, trying to read the emotions on Albus' face as he sat beside Scorpius. It was a mix of shock and uneasiness at the reaction of the Great Hall. She made a mental note to try and find Albus early the next day. Soon her own name was called. Taking a deep breath she made her way to the stool. The Sorting Hat had barely touched her head before shouting

"Gryffindor!" Rose smiled as she stood up making her way over to the Gryffindor table where some of her older cousins congratulated her.

Once the sorting was over the feast began and all the first years settled into an uneasy night of getting to know their seniors at school before the classes would start the next day. Scorpius, who had been talking animatedly to an uncharacteristically quiet Albus, took a break from the conversation and looked up towards the Gryffindor table searchingly. When he saw Rose and their eyes met, she gave him a subtle nod. He smiled knowing everything was going to be alright

…..

The next morning, Rose was up early and ready to go. She wasn't nearly as studious as her mother had been when she was in school, but she was looking forward to lessons. Particularly Care of Magical Creatures. As she walked down to the Great Hall for breakfast, she spotted her cousin Albus and Scorpius and made to catch up with them. "Morning." She greeted them as Scorpius shot her a smile in return. Albus mumbled something that sounded like "morning."

Rose sighed "Al, please stop sulking..."

Scorpius nodded in agreement, "Yes Albus, listen to Rosie." As soon as he'd done that he blushed realizing that he had used her nickname but chose to go along with it. "He has been like this all night." He complained

Rose looked at Scorpius, feeling her own cheeks flush at his use of her nickname.

"He likes to mope..." Rose explained before turning to Albus.

"It'll be fine Al. . Aunt Ginny and Uncle Harry aren't going to disown you for being in Slytherin..." she said.

Albus who had been staring off into the distance looked up at his cousin and gave her a grateful smile. "It's just all these students Rosie... James hasn't even come to see me since yesterday…"

Rose sighed before glancing behind Albus "Uh, Al...?" She gestured towards James who was making his way down the staircase and began to walk towards them.

Albus smiled and looked towards his elder brother and all but ran towards him leaving Rose and Scorpius alone.

Scorpius looked down at the ground nervously then looked up at Rose "Your cousin doesn't seem too happy about being in Slytherin…"

"Hmm?" Rose asked. She too had been watching her cousins with amusement and was happy that Albus felt he could confide in James. She turned to Scorpius, noticing how nervous he was, she smiled. "Al just doesn't know how to tell his parents...I'm glad he has a friend in Slytherin."

Scorpius beamed at Rose's words "I'm happy I have a friend too... Friends actually…" he said shyly "it's ok to call you Rosie right?"

Rose nodded "Of course. I don't mind..." she smiled "But that also means you get a nickname too,…I'll just call you Scorp."

"You're really bad at nicknames Rosie" Scorpius teased, "choose a better one!"

Rose giggled, shaking her head stubbornly "No...Scorp it is!" She said as she rushed into the Great Hall and Scorpius sighed dreamily with an amused look on his face. He soon made his way inside.

Rose watched when Scorpius entered and sat down at the Slytherin table. When he glanced at her, she merely stuck her tongue out at him and he proceeded to do the same. She knew then that Scorpius would quickly become her best friend.

And he did….
