The middle of the summer before her sixth year, Rose found herself home alone. Hugo was staying at a friends' and their parents had been called in to the Ministry for an emergency meeting. The following day was her birthday and Rose couldn't believe how fast the rest of the year had gone by. She blamed Scorpius. She was happy and when they were together she would often lose track of time. But she still hadn't told Ron about their relationship.
On this particular evening, She stepped out to the yard and watched as Lila flew overhead, the sky looking like it would rain soon. Rose went back inside and noticed a copy of the Daily Prophet laying flat on the kitchen counter. She picked it up and sighed when she read the headline. "Anastasia Ivashkov, daughter of Padma Patil and former Durmstrang student Dimitri Ivashkov is missing..."
Suddenly, the fireplace in the living room cackled, coming to life and Scorpius's face suddenly popped up. "Hey, can I come by?"
Rose confirmed that it was safe because Ron wasn't home. Moments later, Scorpius walked through the fireplace. Almost instantly, he walked over to Rose and wrapped his arms around her, pressing his lips against hers in a heated kiss. Once they both pulled away for air Scorpius smiled.
"Four weeks is too long..." But the smile soon wavered as he caught sight of the newspaper on the counter. He frowned.
Following his gaze, Rose glanced down at the Prophet as well "Horrible isn't it? She's the third one this week..." she said softly, but took comfort in being in Scorpius' arms.
Scorpius had a hardened look in his eyes, he leaned over, grabbing the newspaper and tossing it in the bin.
"I wish we could do something about this..." He mumbled into her hair. "All those families, Rose…"
Rose sighed, glancing up at him, hand on his chest. "Mum said yesterday that Hugo and I might be the next targets, along with Al and my other cousins...I've never seen Uncle Harry so frantic."
Scorpius nodded and led her to the living room. They sat on the sofa, Scorpius wrapping his arm around Rose's shoulder and holding her close. "I don't know…" He said taking a breath "What I'd do if something happened to you…" he whispered "But I promise I'll always protect you."
Rose gave him a smile as she reached up to push some hair away from his face. "Don't worry. It'll be alright..."
Scorpius kissed her cheek "It's your birthday soon…what does the princess want?" He asked innocently, thinking of the gift he had already bought for her, currently sitting on his nightstand.
Rose chuckled "Not until tomorrow...what do I want?" She said, pondering for a moment before looking at Scorpius with a serious expression. "I want a baby dragon...you know like Hagrid used to have." She bit her lip to keep from bursting into laughter at Scorpius' reaction.
Scorpius saw Rose holding her laughter and all but jumped on her. He pinned her down on the sofa and started tickling her, causing her to laugh. He stopped tickling her after a few seconds, but she was still pinned underneath him. Taking advantage of the situation he bent down and kissed her, his hand traitorously roaming very close to the hem of her shirt while the other was entangled in her hair.
Rose kissed him back fully, smiling against his lips as she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him a bit closer to her. She felt his hand wander down to her waist and immediately felt goosebumps as she always did whenever he was near. They both pulled away to catch their breath for a moment wearing identical grins.
Suddenly they heard a scream which sounded more like a war cry. Scorpius fell off from on top of Rose and turned to see Mr. and Mrs. Weasley standing near the fireplace. While Hermione was red in the face with a clear 'oh my!' expression, Ron had whipped his wand in his hand and was half-way in the process of casting a stunner. Scorpius had barely managed to dodge the spell which luckily hit the floor but he couldn't escape from the room.
"What the bloody hell is going on here?!" Ron screamed, glancing between Rose and Scorpius.
Rose panicked as she stood up immediately, placing herself between Ron and Scorpius. "Dad, stop! Please." she said to Ron whose wand still gripped tightly in his hand, his knuckles practically turning white.
Ron looked at Rose and then at Scorpius who had stood and walked up to stand beside her. Ron sighed and put his wand away in his pocket. Hermione too came to put a hand on his arm. Still red with anger, Ron knew he couldn't go around throwing spells, he all but commanded, "Explain."
"We're together..." Rose said, looking at Ron with no hesitation and surprising Scorpius by not tugging at her hair. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you before…. but it was only because I was afraid you'd react this way..."
Ron softened at that "B-but he is a Malfoy… " He said with a low voice. But as Hermione realized, Ron held no malice in his voice. It was a desperate attempt to protect their little girl from the realities of the world. And the history with Draco and his family, understandably, would make Ron uneasy at seeing Scorpius with Rose. He knew and had to acknowledge that Rose had grown up. And he saw the determination and resilience in his daughter's eyes that resembled his. He was proud of her and the young woman she'd become. But Ron also felt hurt that Rose hadn't shared with him such an important development in her life. And to find out the way he did.
Without another word, Ron marched upstairs walking past them. Rose winced when she heard a door slam shut. She suddenly felt hot tears roll down her cheeks and she rushed past Hermione and a concerned Scorpius making her way out to the yard. The fact that it had begun to rain didn't seem to matter.
Scorpius stared at the door through which Rose had left, then gave Hermione an apologetic look before he rushed to find his girlfriend, summoning an umbrella as he did so. He was running but so was Rose. She came to a stop at the edge of the lake, her face wet. It was clear she was crying. Scorpius walked up to her and held the umbrella so it would cover both of them as he wrapped his other arm around her waist and held her.
"Hey love…." He said gently, over the sound of the rain.
Rose sniffled looking up at him, her red hair and clothes wet from the rain, her eyes brimming with tears. "I knew this would happen…"
Scorpius sighed, gently wiping away a tear from Rose's cheek with his thumb. "He was shocked…."
Rose rested her head on Scorpius' chest. "He also probably will never speak to me again."
"That's not true, love... He loves you a lot, and maybe he just felt hurt that he didn't know about us..." Scorpius said gently.
Rose sighed, looking out towards the lake "Because what just happened is exactly why I didn't want to tell him..." she murmured.
Scorpius kissed her on the head. "Give him some time…he also saw us in a very…intimate situation." he said, blushing "So it's understandable. No father would want to see his little girl in that situation."
Rose nodded "I know…" she said softly.
Scorpius gave her a smile and took her hand in his. "Come on, let's get out of this rain."
"Ok but I'm staying at Al's." Rose replied.
Once they entered the house, Rose walked up to Hermione who was looking over some paperwork at the kitchen table. "Mum...Is it alright if I spend the night at Uncle Harry's?"
Hermione looked up from her parchment. On the one hand, she wanted her daughter to be comfortable, but on the other she hoped that Ron and Rose would clear things out between them. She sighed but smiled.
"Of course you can, dear... But only for tonight. Tomorrow morning I need you to be here nice and early to talk things out with your father."
Hermione then turned to Scorpius and said, "Also, in the future, please refrain from such activities in such a public setting would you children?"
Scorpius was red in the face and sputtered. He knew well that if Ron and Hermione had not arrived, things between him and Rose would have escalated and quickly. On his part, at least, he silently wished it had.
"Of-of course Mrs. Weasley.." he managed, trying not to make eye contact with Hermione.
Picking up on the insinuation, Rose immediately began tugging at her hair but shifted the attention back to her. "Yes mum." She said hugging Hermione. "Thank you..."
Hermione hugged Rose back and whispered in her ear. "Trust your father more than you do, Rose... He loves us more than anything in the world..."
Rose pulled away looking at her mum and smiled sadly "I know..."
Hermione watched Rose and Scorpius step into the fireplace. Once the fire cackled and they were gone, she made her way upstairs to her and Ron's bedroom. She entered and saw Ron sitting on the bed with the family picture in his hand. He glanced up at Hermione when she entered. "She's at Harry's isn't she?"
Hermione nodded , taking a seat beside him on the bed "How'd you know?"
"Well she is my daughter," Ron replied with a sad smile. "I know her pretty well... Even if she doesn't trust me."
Hermione took his hand in hers giving it a gentle squeeze. "That you do...she does trust you darling, she was just a bit taken aback by your reaction..."
"They were practically doing IT!" Ron exclaimed, "On our living room sofa of all places!'
"Ron!" Hermione scolded, before sighing "They thought they were alone... And yes Rose and Scorpius could have been more mindful and I will have a serious talk to her about this but Ron…" she said softly "Rose is finally happy…and Scorpius is a good young man. They just started dating. They must have gotten caught in the moment."
Ron mumbled something then sighed. "I-I supposed I just hoped that she would have told me... And why aren't you more shocked?"
Hermione sighed "Rose had told me...but she wanted you to hear it from her. I suppose she just began putting it off and putting it off... I mean it's also not as if we haven't been at home much this summer due to what's happening..."
Ron looked up at Hermione, surprised "How long has this been going on?" He asked softly.
"I believe they started dating a month back into school. A couple of weeks after that she told me...but I already had my suspicions when she didn't respond to Lorcan's Christmas letter..."
Ron nodded but didn't respond. He was still clutching the family photograph in his hand. He wasn't one to show emotions. Never had been. But he was hurt. He carefully placed the photo back on the side table and got up.
"I'm going out for some air," Ron said. He was especially distraught that he and Rose had argued a day before her birthday. He had even saved up to get her a goblin silver necklace with protective charms on it. He figured he might as well go to pick up the necklace. But instead of taking the floo he stepped outside and walked over to the family and drove away.
…
Rose and Scorpius had soon arrived at Albus' house. It was rather late in the evening, but as they stepped into the Potters' living room, they found Al, walking out of the kitchen with a plate of cookies. As he was about to take a bite he froze midway, when he'd seen the fireplace cackle and his best friend and cousin step out.
"Don't tell mum..." Albus said gravely.
But when he saw Rose his eyes widened, particularly at seeing her puffy eyes. "Rosie? Are you all right?" Albus said immediately, turning to look at Scorpius with a raised eyebrow. Although he knew Scorpius would never hurt Rose, it was a brotherly instinct. "What'd you do?" He asked skeptically with a hint of playfulness in his tone.
"Nothing!" Scorpius looked around to see if Al's parents were there. When he saw that they weren't he replied, "Mr Weasley found out... H-he umm... caught us ...snogging.. on the sofa..."
Albus looked at them, his eyes wide. "Shit." He frowned, taking a frustrated bite of the cookie in his hand. "Then what happened?" He asked, still chewing.
Rose sighed "We obviously got into an argument... he cast a stunning spell at Scorp." She said softly.
Scorpius saw Albus chewing on a cookie and walked over to him, taking the plate from him, "Rosie is being stubborn..." He said taking a bite of the cookie.
Rose gaped at him "I am not! I just don't want to talk to my dad right now. We're both worked up and it would just end in another argument..." she said, also grabbing a cookie from the plate. Food always made her feel better.
"You do realize that uncle Ron is mad at you for another reason though.. You two should have told him earlier" Albus said with a frown that his beloved cookies were being attacked.
"Yes, thank you for stating the obvious Al..." Rose mumbled, taking the cookies out from Scorpius' hands and moving to sit on the couch with the entire plate on her lap. She sighed, frowning, lost in her own thoughts.
"My cookies..." Albus pouted. Nevertheless, he went over to sit beside Rose and gave her a side hug.
"Should I kick Lily out of her room? Because I mean you are obviously staying here tonight." He asked trying to lighten the mood
Rose couldn't help but chuckle at that. As she was about to respond, Harry had come downstairs, his hair looking particularly messy, and his voice tired. "Albus...what is this about kicking your sister out of her room?" He asked tiredly, used to his younger children's antics. In his weariness, he hadn't realized Rose and Scorpius were there as well.
"Open your eyes dad! This red head isn't Lily!" Albus snickered. Harry did a double take when he saw Rose.
"Huh? Oh what's the matter?" Harry asked, immediately going into protective auror/uncle mode.
"This cookie thief," Albus said giving Rose an angry but playful look, "Fought with Uncle Ron because these two were caught snogging in the living room" Albus had a mischievous grin on his face which was also mirrored by Harry.
Harry chuckled "Is that right? Well Rose and Scorpius, should I expect a wedding invasion in the near future?"
Rose looked at her Uncle with wide eyes, grabbing a strand of hair while Scorpius blushed profusely. "Uncle Harry!" she said, glaring at Albus.
The father and son laughed but Harry continued, his tone more serious. "But Rose, do talk to Ron. He has always been this way... Hates being excluded out of anything."
Rose sighed nodding, before giving Albus a mischievous look "Albus was nice enough to share his entire plate of cookies with us...you know, to help cheer me up. You're so lucky Al...mum never lets me or Hugo have sweets this late." she said with a small grin.
Albus jumped up, pointing his finger exaggeratedly at the last cookie on the plate. He lunged to grab the cookie but it flew out of the plate straight into Harry's hand. He took a bite out of it. "Grandma Weasley's legendary chocolate chip cookies. "Delicious."
Both Harry and Albus knew well that having any type of sweets was prohibited in the Potter House, particularly during Quidditch training season because of Ginny and Lily so they would often sneak treats into the house.
Albus leaned back against the couch dramatically. "Dad" He groaned "That was the last one!"
Harry, Rose and Scorpius laughed as Harry looked at the time and started walking towards the kitchen to heat up some inner. Ginny and Lily were at The Harpies training compound where the youngest Potter was undergoing youth training after being scouted for the under seventeen team.
James Jr. was with his grandfather and namesake James Sr. apprenticing in transfiguration and DADA for his final year before leaving to join the newly formed Response and Magical safety team or RAMS.
"Scorpius, will you also be spending the night?" Harry asked.
"No sir, in fact I should probably get going soon... Father must be at home, he had gone to meet... My grandfather. I think you should talk to him soon." Scorpius responded
Harry nodded understandingly, though at the mention of Lucius Malfoy, he couldn't help but feel somewhat uneasy. Instead he just smiled "Thank you for making sure Rose made it here all right..." he said, knowing how grim the situation was becoming for the families of those who were considered "war heroes" or who had contributed to the dark lord's downfall. Even elemental things such as using the floo network would now have to be used with caution.
Glancing at Rose and Scorpius, Harry suddenly had an idea, turning to Albus he spoke. "Son, will you come upstairs with me for a moment to help set up Lily's room for Rose to stay in?" As Albus looked like he was about to protest, Harry gave him a stern look before Albus rushed upstairs. Harry chuckled, following him "Oh and get home safely as well Scorpius...please tell your father i'll speak to him tomorrow at work."
Scorpius saw Harry and Al leave the room under the pretense of getting Lily's room ready.
He turned to Rose, wrapping his arms around her waist and giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"It's going to be ok, love." Scorpius said " Try to talk to your father ok? I'll see tomorrow."
Rose gave him a weak smile but nodded. "Love you."
"Love you too" Scorpius smiled, giving Rose a quick peck on the lips then he stepped into the Potter fireplace and flooed home.
