Overlord: The Power of Two
Book 1
Chapter 7. Beginning of the Adventurers
The sun was blazing down as the group of eight people made their way along the bumpy road, the Swords of Darkness adventurer team leading the front while Nfirea rode in a carriage in the middle pulled by his own horse. Brita was at his side keeping watch over the surroundings. And lastly there was Blade, and Narberal keeping watch over the back.
The Vampire kept scanning, and even watching Nfirea. He was still intrigued that this 'Talented One' may be a great danger to Nazarick, Momonga, and himself. But looking at him more closely he could only describe him as timid.
Nfirea was a young boy with short, blonde hair that half covers his bowl-like face. He was dressed in work clothes from the potion making workshop.
"There is no reason to eliminate him… in fact, he may be of help to Nazarick," Blade thought to himself.
Also during the rest of the way, he tried to keep up with the conversation that the higher ranking adventurers were having. He joined the conversation when he voluntarily asked indirect questions that allowed him to learn more about the Adventurers.
Basically, in short, the Adventurers were practically just Monster Hunters or Semi Creatures that could harm or represent a danger to Humans.
"Why should I be surprised? In several Animes and Mangas that I have read that is practically what the Adventurer Guilds do," he scolded himself.
"And one more question. I know that in the Baharuth Empire there are 'Workers', but, does the Slane Theocracy also have an Adventurer Guild, or how is it managed?".
Immediately Blade and Narberal could identify the expressions of annoyance of the adventurers.
"They don't have any Guilds. There are no Workers either," Peter was the first to speak, though he didn't sound very excited.
"Those who tried to form one, didn't end up well at all," Dyne adds.
"Those who don't agree to join their writing ranks or their army," Ninja finishes.
Blade immediately thought of the Sun Scripture, those knights who attacked Carne Village.
"Are you against that?", it wasn't a question but a statement from Blade.
"Adventurers need teammates to survive. The Slane Theocracy can arm, train and develop their talented, or strong people, but they can end up just throwing them away like trash, or they only use them for political purposes," Brita explains, turning her head slightly to look at him.
"In other words. The Slane Theocracy only cares about their own agenda," Blade concluded, to which the adventurers responded with a nod.
The Vampire was once again immersed in his thoughts. He didn't forget that He who led the attack on Carne Village used a YGGDRASIL summoning item. If there were other players who came to this world and the players were Human avatars it wouldn't be strange if they allied themselves with the Slane Theocracy.
"We really need to have a lot of information, knowledge, and tools to be able to go explore the Theocracy," Blade thinks.
"Let's stop here," Nfirea's suggestion made the Vampire leave his mind.
A few minutes later, the eight people turned off the path to go down a little to the edge of a slow-flowing river. The young pharmacist was petting his horse while drinking from the river, the adventurers were discussing what formation they should take when they get closer to the vicinity of the forest, because sometimes the path can be dangerous.
The furthest away were the two who came from Nazarick. Narberal was sitting on a rock very close to Blade.
The latter simply observed everything around him; the plants, the flowing water, the horse's breathing, the green grass. He couldn't help but appreciate the natural beauty.
"It's been a long time since I breathed fresh air," Blade whispered very pleased and with a smile adorned on his face. One which was hidden thanks to his helmet.
"Mr. Badre, from this point on it will be possible to encounter monsters near the edge of the forest, please remain alert."
"Ticket. Thank you for the warning," the aforementioned replied to Peter.
"It will be fine, since I am a ranger, my senses are top notch. If anything approaches, I will make sure to let you know. Even Nabe-chan is very relaxed because she trusts me," Lukrut says with a flirtatious smile.
"Insect," Narberal says seriously.
"Nabe," Blade says.
She leans in a little, "Can I kill it?"
"I'll take care of it."
Narberal seemed a little surprised by the answer.
"Lord Vlade, a supreme being like you shouldn't have to..."
"Excuse me Lukrut. You're starting to make my friend uncomfortable with your comments. I ask you please not to do it anymore," Blade told the adventurer in the kindest way possible.
"I would listen to him if I were you," Brita advised, remembering what happened at the inn.
"Uh oh, of course..." Lukrut replied, raising his hands in an apology.
"On behalf of my team, I also apologize for my friend's behavior," Peter asked.
"Nothing is wrong. I simply needed to clarify this situation," Blade said.
Ninja clears his throat, "This area is the territory of the Wise King of the Forest, did Badre-San know that?"
His question to change the conversation paid off. That's because the Vampire turns to look at him with interest.
"What is that?" Some kind of rare creature?"
"It's a very powerful magical creature that has lived for hundreds of years. The wise king of the forest is quite a mystery, as no one has ever seen it properly before, but I've heard stories that it's a four-legged creature with silver fur and a snake-like tail," Nfirea explained.
Blade was secretly trying to identify any creature from Yggdrasil that had that description he had just been given, but nothing came to mind. That meant it could be a new creature from this new world.
"I would really like to meet that creature," Blade said honestly.
After an hour the trail resumed. The trail was fairly quiet, until Lukrut gestured for them to stop.
"Here they come," the ranger said.
"Where?"
Lukrut pointed to a small green hill off the trail. From the depths of the forest emerged a squad of Goblins, and Ogres.
The Ogres were clearly taller than anyone else around, while the Goblins were the size of human children. The Ogres were a dusty brown, while the Goblins were a forest green. The Ogres carried large broken tree branches as clubs, while the Goblins were armed with swords, knives, and axes. The Ogres wore nothing but loincloths, while the Goblins wore a motley collection of different pieces of armor, surely gathered from wherever they could get them.
"It seems we can't avoid the fight," Brita says, unsheathing her sword.
"Nphirea-San, please hide inside the carriage," Peter asks.
"Yes, I'm counting on you," the pharmacist answers.
While Peter and the rest of the Adventurers were agreeing on what would be the best way to start, Blade, accompanied by Narberal, began to walk calmly towards the horde of Ogres and Goblins.
The latter charged at the pair, believing that they would be easy prey.
"Brade-San, don't go away!" Dyne warns.
"...You take care of Nfirea-San. We'll take care of this," Blade tells the adventurers without turning to look at them.
"Nabe, make sure no one escapes."
Narberal nodded slightly in agreement. The first Ogre approached the Vampire, who unsheathed his sword. It was one of his twin swords, but he decided that if the situation warranted it then he would use his second sword.
The giant swung his club forward, to which Blade nimbly ran over the weapon, and made a stab, landing on his feet. It seemed that he had not made any scratches on the Ogre, but it was shown otherwise when half of his body was divided in two, falling dead instantly.
The second Ogre tried to crush him with the club, which for a moment he thought he had succeeded, which was contrary when Blade's shadow was above him, receiving a stab that pierced his skull.
The thing did not stop, because the Vampire while the Ogre fell to the ground, threw his sword as if it were a boomerang, making a fine but lethal cut in the throat of three more Ogres, the four corpses of the giants falling to the ground at the same time.
Narberal was not far behind, though, because with a simple electric spell, she annihilated two Ogres, and ten Goblins at the same time.
The Swords of Darkness members, Brita, and Nfirea watched all this with expressions of astonishment.
"They are killing Ogres with ease."
"It could be orichalcum, no. I think it could be adamantium."
The remaining Goblins and Ogres realized that those two were slaughtering them, so their survival instincts screamed at them to flee, but they couldn't even take a few steps further into the forest because Narberal was right where they had appeared.
"By Lord Vlad's orders. I will not let them flee," he said in a voice from beyond the grave.
