Chapter 6 - The Wizengamot
Harry couldn't exactly say that he was especially experienced in the political arena, however he was experienced in public speaking. As an officer of the Empire, he had been trained to say what he wanted to say in an articulate yet concise manner and as a Captain of the Imperial Army, he had learned how and when to enact the 'Drill Sergeant' voice when needed. Yet speaking to the governing body of what to him was a foreign world with very different ways, was something that had him nervous.
His godfather had been sure to give what advice he could and pass along things he had learned during his childhood, the man having been raised by the House of Black after all. Harry soaked it up like a sponge, and yet he knew he could not rely on his godfather's advice alone to get him through the coming meeting.
It was now a mere three days before the first task and much of his time had been spent either organising what meagre resources he had at his disposal or training rigorously in what he defined as 'Combat magic'. Sirius claimed that most of Wizarding Britain viewed the magic he was learning as 'Dark' , something that Harry had scoffed at. He still had massive gaps in what constituted his impromptu magical education, having skipped most of the basics, but he had a natural knack for casting, if his godfather was to be believed.
Now, Harry was preparing himself to enter the Wizengamot chambers to take up his seat as Lord Potter. He had been advised to adopt wizarding robes for the occasion however he had sneered at the outfit presented to him, instead opting for his ceremonial officer uniform, which was basically his regular uniform but in Black. He did however accept a black cloak, which would at least make him fit in at least slightly. Donning his officer kepi and nodding to his godfather who stood at his side, he moved forwards as the doors to the chambers were opened by a pair of guards.
The layout of the room had been described to him during one of the many 'lessons' with Sirius, and thus had a good idea of where exactly he should go. Leaving Sirius to go and take the seat of Lord Black, Harry made his way to the visitors gallery, briefly showing the guard the letter allowing him to attend the meeting. He watched as other visitors and members of the Wizengamot made their entrances, taking their seats in the appropriate places before the Chief Warlock, Albus Dumbledore, entered the room. This alone caused the people in the room to quieten and begin paying attention, something that much to Harry's chagrin, impressed him.
Dumbledore began the process of taking note of who was in attendance and who was not, before he came across the House of Potter's seat which, much to Harry's annoyance, was currently occupied by Dedalus Diggle. He had been informed by Sirius that Diggle was basically just a yes man for Dumbledore, who had shifted the house of Potter's 'allegiance' from the Neutral party to the Liberals or as he had heard them called, the 'Light Houses'. This was something he would be changing in short order.
It took a while for the Chief Warlock to go through all of the families and for a while Harry thought he would fall asleep, tedious process that it was. Eventually however he was done, and called upon the people to speak up on any major announcements, giving Harry the foot in the door he needed.
Standing up from his seat, he called out clearly for the room to hear. "Right here, Chief Warlock. I, Harry of the House of Potter, claim my lordship and my seat on the Wizengamot, as is my right as heir to the Potter family, magic and the families of the Wizengamot as my witness." The words felt foreign to him, however those were the official lines to claim one's title and so he persevered.
Dumbledore frowned slightly before quickly switching to a genial smile. "Mr. Potter, are you sure this is a wise course of action, with you having returned to us so recently? I would have thought you would wish for more time to adjust more to our world."
Harry raised an eyebrow at the subtle attempt to sway him from his course. "Negative, Chief Warlock. I find I learn better on the job, as it were." Harry turned to the rest of the Wizengamot, addressing them all. "Esteemed members of the Wizengamot, whilst many of you I am sure, have your doubts about me, having not grown up in the wizarding world or even having gone to Hogwarts, I assure you that in the short time since my return, I have dedicated much time to learning our ways. Under the tutelage of my godfather, Lord Sirius Black, I plan on spending much more time learning our customs, laws and of course, magic. I do hope that even if you do not welcome me with welcome arms, you welcome me with an open mind."
Turning back to face Dumbledore who now wore a stern look upon his face amidst the muttering of the Wizengamot who mostly looked rather impressed at the young man's speech, he cleared his throat and spoke once more. "I shall repeat myself once more. I am claiming my title and seat now, Chief Warlock."
Dumbledore's face remained stern, however he inclined his head before turning to Dedalus Diggle, nodding once more to the old man who quickly stood and made his way away from the Potter seat and towards Harry, inclining his head to the young Captain before taking a seat. Harry for his part, returned the nod out of courtesy and strode towards his seat, making a show of dusting it off before sitting down and staring intensely at the Chief Warlock.
Clearing his throat quietly, Dumbledore banged his gavel. "Then it is a privilege to announce the ascension of Harry James Potter to his rightful title of Lord Potter, Lord of Blightwood Castle." Harry took note of what appeared to be his castle, something Sirius apparently didn't know about judging by his surprised look. He also couldn't help but notice Dumbledore's grimace at the name of the castle, causing him to laugh internally. After a smattering of applause, the Chief Warlock cleared his throat once more before speaking. "Now, moving on-"
"Apologies, Chief Warlock!" Called a voice, Harry's eyes scanned the room and found the voice to be coming from the opposite side of the room from a man seated close to Sirius. Checking the crest above his seat, he identified what he believed to be the House of Yaxley.
Dumbledore turned slightly and gestured for the man to continue, which he did. "Before we move on, Lord Potter must declare his alignment within the bloc."
The Chief Warlock gave a quiet chuckle. "Apologies, I seem to have forgotten! Although I feel it an unnecessary exercise considering the Potter family history-"
Harry chose then to stop the old man in his tracks. "I'm sorry Chief Warlock, but I am actually declaring the House of Potter for the conservative party."
Dumbledore, along with most of the members of the Wizengamot, gaped. "But-but Lord Potter, the House of Potter has been firmly entrenched with the liberal party for-"
Harry cut him off once more.
"In the past, perhaps. However I was not raised by the Potters or even people with similar beliefs. From where I am sitting and from what I have read, I can only see that years within the liberal bloc have done the House of Potter little to no good. It is time for change, and I declare that change now. I officially declare the House of Potter to be rescinding its support from the liberal party, and declare for the conservatives."
Amidst the sharp gasps from many members of the liberal party, applause could be heard from the bulk of the conservative members and even a portion of the neutrals. Dumbledore looked completely gobsmacked however quickly assumed a neutral demeanour before banging his gavel once more in an attempt to bring order. "Very well Lord Potter, your declaration has been noted and recognised by myself and the Wizengamot."
And with that, the new young Lord allowed himself a broad smile, which to many in the chamber seemed almost predatory.
Scene Break
The meeting had taken up the entire morning but thankfully, in Harry's mind at least, it ended, allowing him to meet up with Sirius.
"You did rather well in there, better than I expected in fact." His godfather said, smiling wryly at him.
Harry shrugged. "Wasn't exactly all that difficult, it's not like they could refuse my inheritance. Not for lack of trying on Dumbledore's part at least. Oh, speak of the Devil…"
The old man himself was making his way towards them both, his face set in a determined look. Reaching them, he sighed before inclining his head. "I congratulate you once more on your ascension, Mr- I mean, Lord Potter. I do however have my concerns about-"
"Chief Warlock, your concerns are noted however the decision stands. I find little in common with my own beliefs and those of the liberal party, in fact I find myself rather on the opposite side of the spectrum."
Dumbledore pursed his lips. "Many of the families amongst the conservative party were strong supporters of the man who killed your parents, my boy."
Harry simply raised an eyebrow. "Perhaps they did. Such is war, and war is something I understand. I have no doubt members of their families were killed by law enforcement or your Order of the Phoenix- Oh yes, I have been told quite a bit about your little secret army." He added upon seeing Dumbledore glance at Sirius. He continued.
"As harsh as it may sound, my parents are dead, and the man who killed them along with them, or so the Wizarding world seems to believe. If his supporters wish to finish the job, they are welcome to try, but the most they will achieve is my irritation. If they prove to simply wish to survive or even just firmly fight for what they believe, then who am I to judge? Either way, the matter is settled and I now must go and find the location of my family's castle… Blightwood castle, a rather bleak name for such a supposed light house, eh Dumbledore?"
At that, Harry and Sirius walked away, chuckling quietly at the scowl on the old headmaster's face.
AUTHORS NOTES:
Hey guys! So, got the Wizengamot chapter out of the way. I'll be honest, I really enjoyed writing this chapter- yet I do not think I did a very good job of it. I tried to do things a little differently to how I usually read Wizengamot chapters, but hey ho. Either way, here it is!
So, many of you may have questions about some of the things in this chapter, and most of the answers will be quite clear in the next chapter. However because I know this one will most likely be on most people's minds: Why the conservative party, or the "Dark" as many call them. SO, keep in mind that Harry plans on having the planet join the Galactic Empire, and governing it himself, along with the rest of the Solar System. He wants people on his side that have ambition, money, power and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. He is not exactly a good guy, and the takeover of the planet will get seriously dark.
Yes, a lot of them were Voldemort's supporters but let's face it, many of them supported him for the power he had. How many will flock to Harry's banner once he displays the might of the Imperial War machine? Voldemort offered them Great Britain, Harry will offer them the world.
Also you may notice that Harry was called Potter during this chapter- rather obvious, but because of the nature of the Lordship and the families, traditions, etcetera, he felt that insisting upon his adopted name may cause offense or even complications with his ascension, so there it is! Hope you guys enjoyed the chapter.
