I realized that the Black brothers had a lot in common in terms of personality though they have a hard time admitting it. The parallelism between the conversations I had with the two seemed proof enough. They loved secrecy. I couldn't really blame them given the situation. Having the guts to deal with things alone is an admirable trait. At least, I believe it is. Merlin, my mind was wandering already. I sighed and kept the essay I was supposed to be working on and rested my forehead on the edge of my desk.
"Finally, I thought you'd never give up on that" Adeline stated from her bed. A copy of The Witch's Friend monthly issue was opened on her lap.
"I did not give up on it. I simply needed a break" I frowned.
She raised an eyebrow.
"It is due in three weeks…"
"Merlin! Why in the world are you working on it then!?"
I rolled my eyes. She was well aware of how I do things. If I wanted to cram it, I would. Besides, nothing will please me more than to see the panicked look on my classmates' faces when they realized they'd procrastinated for far too long. I stood up from my seat and stretched before I threw myself on my bed whilst making sure that my face was buried in the thick fluffy comforters.
"Anyway, you better rest up Fin. If you're not finishing this month's load of homework then something must be on your mind" Adeline smirked.
"Can't a girl be exhausted? What else could I be thinking about?" I scoffed.
She said nothing in reply.
I knew where this was headed. The school has been way too dramatic these past few weeks. I swear my life is turning into some poorly-written teen romance novel. My friends seem to think that I'm secretly dating one Regulus Arcturus Black. I want to vomit at the stupidity of it all.
Fixing myself on my bed and hiding under my covers. I started to drift off to sleep.
Oh well, it was a Saturday after all. Homework can wait.
"I'm not sure whether I should think that this plan is incredibly stupid or…surprisingly brilliant?" I started, fixing my blank stare at none other than Sirius Black and a doubtful-looking James Potter. The two ambushed me a good distance away from the dungeons. What a way to start my Sunday morning. Though if I'm being honest, Sirius ambushed me, demanding that I go with them to the library while Potter watched in horror. Apparently, the boy still gets intimidated by yours truly. Not that I mind. I wordlessly followed.
Sirius was wearing a wide grin after explaining to me the details of the 'plan'.
I sighed. Maybe agreeing to this was a mistake. However, the image of Avery being a victim of this so-called prank was too good to be kept a fantasy. I almost smirked.
"Fine, I'll give you a list of the passwords to the Slytherin common room…"
James looked surprised while his best friend punched the air mouthing the word Yes.
"… only the ones to be used by the end of this week. It changes daily by midnight. This means you'll have the rest of today until Sunday. That should be enough time for you guys to pull this off"
I started to pack my things. The library was getting crowded and I wasn't about to be seen with the school's most infamous Gryffindors. It didn't help that they were about to pull a prank that will most likely land them a week's worth of detention. I was too engrossed in my bag that I haven't noticed the black envelope slip from the pages of a book I was reading.
"You dropped something, Rosier" The boy with glasses spoke up. He was about to pick up the discarded envelope when I beat him to it. I wanted to laugh at my pitiful mistake. The other boy sitting at the table must've noticed the alarm in my actions as he wasted no time snatching the small envelope from my hand. I knew I should've kept it in my drawers. If only I wasn't so afraid of Adeline or any of my other roommates accidentally finding it. I kept my expression calm and collected as Sirius examined the envelope. If he were to open it…
"Where'd you get this little Rosier?" Sirius asked. He wore a look of confusion. It was almost as if he recognized the envelope.
"Can I have it back please?" I gestured to my hand. I wanted to have that letter hidden as soon as possible. I still haven't figured out who it was from. My plans did not include meeting the person who sent those books. The only thing that's been bothering me is the fact that I haven't got a clue as to who it was from. I felt no fear even if it was a stranger that knew my favorite books. They were probably the best copies and even looked expensive, I wasn't about to deny them. I did not want to. They gave it to me, didn't they? They don't get to ask anything in return nor ask her to return them. I looked at Sirius once more.
"Is something wrong with it? I want my envelope back please" I tried again, keeping my voice eerily calm.
"I sense a bit of irritation there, Fin" He chuckled. Potter's brows were furrowed behind his glasses. Sirius was playing a dangerous game and they both knew it. I was about to just snatch it back when the long-haired boy decided to just give it back to me. I met his eyes one more time before quickly snatching the delicate thing and placing it in one of the inside pockets of my bag.
"What made it so interesting to you anyway?" I didn't bother to look at him as I asked the question.
Potter must've been eager to excuse himself as he quickly muttered a 'see you later' before patting Sirius in the back and dashing towards the library exit. It wasn't until I saw a flash of auburn red hair that I understood why he was in such a hurry. I turned back to Sirius Black. He shook his head at the Potter boy before sending me a knowing smile.
"You mean besides the fact that you were quick to snatch it from James?" He laughed before continuing, "…I recognized that wax seal"
I kept quiet, urging him to say more. He cleared his throat as his voice took on a more serious, though slightly awkward, tone.
"So…Exactly how long has my little brother been sending you letters?"
Once I arrived back at my dorm, I sat down at my desk before taking the envelope out. I couldn't believe it. There's just no way, I thought to myself as I continued to examine it. Sirius' words were echoing repeatedly in my head.
"I'm not much of a stationery lover, but my mummy dearest and dear brother were. I still remember the day they gave him a set of wax stamps with snakes and those fancy swirly vines… I guess mummy thought there was no better gift to celebrate him being sorted into Slytherin after their eldest turned out to be a disappointment"
