With the first two days of camp behind them, our heroes and new friends, people, and Pokémon alike are determinedly heading into Day Three! The sun was barely coming up on the camp as two people were already up and about. On the beach, alongside a few of their Pokémon were Applejack and Sky. The country gal had gotten up as usual at dawn and was surprised to see her friend already up. The boy wanted to go for an early morning run to get his mind space in the right place and be ready to earn the necessary points for today's activities. As such, he asked the country gal if she wanted to come along, and she agreed.
The duo had been running along the shoreline for an hour as the sun rose, bathing them in a bright light. The boy's, Turtwig, Buizel, Pikachu, and the girl's, Breloom, Donphan, and Boltund, were with their trainers as they wanted to exercise. The farmer had a whistle in her hour as she blew in a pattern to help keep everybody in sync when running.
Standing on the porch of the main building, Celestia watched the sunrise. She enjoyed the warm light that resonated off the glowing star and hit her. Her sister approached her from behind, holding a clipboard.
"You're bright and early. Too early for my taste," grumbled Luna, as she was definitely not a morning person like her sister and was still trying to wake up.
"And good morning to you too, Lulu," joked Celestia, knowing her sister was more of a nighttime person.
"So, what activity are we planning for the trainers today?" asked Luna as she had several suggestions on their list.
"Let's see," said Celestia, taking the clipboard from her sister and looking at the options.
All of them seemed like fine lessons to teach the campers. She then caught a glimpse of Sky and Applejack running along the beach; she noticed they all stopped when a pack of Goldeen jumped out of the way before swimming away. The professor then had a smile on her face as she already knew what activity to give for today.
"Lulu, make sure we have enough fishing poles."
"Tia?" said Luna, looking at her sister with a raised eyebrow.
Everyone gathered in the mess hall as breakfast was being served. Upon entering, Applejack and Sky were starved as they loaded their plates to the brim with hotcakes. The rest of their friends were amazed by the amount of food piled on, let alone devoured by the pair, especially Sky.
"Gees, what did you two do? It seems like you went days without eating!" remarked Rainbow.
"Oh, you're one to talk, Dash," retorted Bolt as he teased the girl and her metabolism. That snicker earned him a hard right punch to the shoulder as he let out a yelp.
"I do kinda have to agree with Rainbow," said Twilight.
"We went for a run," said Sky with a mouth full of food.
"Then that must've been some run," said Pinkie as she had a side plate of donuts and cupcakes that she was munching on.
"By the way, Twilight. How's your brother holding up?" asked Applejack.
"It looks like he's made friends with your sister and her friends," said the bookworm, looking over to the table where the four were talking. Seeing her little brother hang out with people his age made Twilight smile, as she knew their parents would be proud to know he was making friends.
Everyone's attention was then turned to the front of the mess hall as Celestia and Luna appeared. The two had finished setting up today's activities as they stood before the campers, ready to tell them of their assignments.
"Good morning, trainers!" said Luna.
"Morning, Professors!" responded everyone.
"Now, as of this morning, here are the standings: The Red Team holds 150 points. The Blue Team: 140 points. The Indigo Team: 125 points. The Orange Team: 100 points. The Yellow Team: 80 points. The Green Team: 60 points. And the Pink team with 50 points."
Everyone looked at their respective teams' current rankings, and Rainbow smiled the most. She and Bolt were currently in the lead and hoped to keep that momentum going into the third day of camp.
"However, it's still early in the competition. And today's activity should play a role in some changes. Now, what do you say to something a little different? Because today's activity will be a two-parter. Each group in their respective team will observe the Water-type Pokémon in the area and compete to see who gets the most valuable catch."
Hearing Celestia's announcement really got some heads turning, as they didn't expect today's activity to have so many parts. Luna then turned to the videoboard behind them and pressed a button.
"Now, as you can see, these waters are teeming with many kinds of Pokémon, and choosing which kind to focus on is completely up to you! Now, for the half of the group that decides to tackle this, you may express your findings in a report, sketch, or any way you choose. But your grade will be based on a final presentation! Now… as for the other half of the groups, you'll have till this evening to catch the most valuable Water-type Pokémon you can capture. Bear in mind that it doesn't have to be the exact Water-type Pokémon that your teammates do a report on. The goal of the competition is to see who gets the biggest catch. That will also impact your final performance and determine the points you contribute to your team."
"Also, a word of caution. Leaving the marked area is forbidden. Priority One is safety first!" said Celestia, laying down the law. "Now then. Off you go!"
Celestia blew her whistle as that was the signal to start their activities. Many groups began to determine who would tackle which part of the assignment.
"Alright, so we can trust you to handle the oral section of the presentation, Twilight?" asked Sky.
"Do you know who you're talking to? I guarantee you, we'll get an A plus easily," said the bookworm as she snapped her fingers to emphasize her point.
"Okay, okay, I believe you," responded the boy, putting his hands up in defense not to get her so worked up.
"You two focus on getting us the biggest catch possible, alright," said Juniper.
"Don't worry about it, sugarcube," said Applejack as she had all the fishing equipment they would need to catch some Water-type Pokémon.
"Good luck!" said Twilight.
"You as well!" said Sky as he and Applejack left to go catch their Pokémon while Twilight and Juniper got to work on the presentation.
Out on the beachfront, tons of trainers were already taking up positions to catch the biggest and most valuable Water-type Pokémon they could capture. Among the group was Rainbow, along with Scootaloo and Apple Bloom, as well as Fluttershy. The chromatic haired girl wanted nothing to do with the oral aspect as she wanted to get in on the action of catching a big Water-type Pokémon so she jumped right into the fishing aspect of the activity.
"Alright, I got something!" said Dash as she felt a tug on her line.
"Cool, what'd you get!" exclaimed Scootaloo, excited for what the older girl might've gotten.
Rainbow pulled her line in as she yanked on her fishing rod. What emerged was a simple Feebas as Rainbow held it.
"That's awesome! A Feebas!" said Scootaloo.
"That sucks!" said Dash as she wanted something better. She took the Pokémon off her line and tossed it back into the water as it swam away. "Word of advice, scoots. If it ain't cool-looking, don't bother with it."
"What kind of advice is that?" said Sky as he and Applejack made their presence known.
"Oh, you two are finally here," responded the chromatic-haired girl as she reset her line. "Smart letting Twilight do all the boring work."
"It's called playing to your strengths, Dash. Besides, she offered to do it," responded the boy.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anyway, if you're hoping to find anything worthwhile, don't bother. Because I'm gonna catch something that will blow you and everybody out of the water!"
"Talk 'bout a big ego," snickered Aj as Dash heard that and glared at her friend. "Apple Bloom, how are you doing?"
"A little help, sis," asked the younger farmer as she couldn't get her lure tied on properly.
"Here, let me," said Applejack as she began to show her younger sibling how to tie the lure before adding some bait. "There you go."
"Thanks sis. Look out, y'all!" said Apple Bloom as she rushed toward the edge to cast her line and help Scootaloo catch something worthwhile.
"How are you doing, Fluttershy?" asked Sky as he approached the girl.
"It's alot harder than it looks," said the girl as she'd never been fishing.
"Here, let me give you some pointers."
While the fishing group tried their best to snag something, the other half of their teammates also worked hard. Twilight and Juniper were near a dock and currently in a Swanna paddleboat. The two girls were slowly approaching an Azumarill and a Sobble. The two Pokémon approached the girls as they each jumped onto the boat's front, allowing the pair to pet it.
"How's your sketch coming along, Twilight?" asked Juniper.
"Take a look," said the bookworm as she showed off her drawing of Azumarill.
"Heh, not bad. How about mine?" asked the girl as she flipped her drawing pad over to show off her design of Sobble.
"Wow… that's actually… better than mine," said Twilight as the way Juniper captured the design and shape of Sobble made it look life-like even without any color. "You got talent."
"Heh, all those art classes my uncle made me take as a little kid paid off," boasted Juniper, proud of her drawing skills.
"Okay, so you can handle the drawings. I can take care of coming up with the presentation. Now, all that's left is determining which Pokémon we want to discuss. And hope that Sky and Applejack have caught something good," said Twilight as the pair looked back out in the water to determine which Water-type Pokémon they wanted to present.
Soon, something began to emerge from the water, creating a splash. It soaked the pair a bit, and they shook their heads.
"What was that?" asked Twilight until she noticed a familiar tuft of hair that emerged.
"Hey, Twilight."
"Spike!" yelled the older sister as she growled upon seeing her little brother in the water and for getting her wet.
"S-Sorry," the boy apologized to his sibling as Sweetie Belle emerged from underneath the water and removed her snorkel.
"Just what are you doing anyways?" asked the girl to her brother.
"Checking out Water-type Pokémon. We figured the best way to observe them is to get up close and personal," explained Sweetie Belle as, at that moment, a Dewgong appeared beside her as he nuzzled her before she petted its head and rubbed the tip of its horn. "Did you know that a Dewgong's horn is actually hard?"
"Come on, Twilight. Join us," said Spike as he put on his snorkel and returned underwater.
Sweetie Belle joined him a second later as Juniper and Twilight were left looking at each other.
"Well, the rules never said we couldn't swim with the Pokémon," stated the film girl.
Soon, they changed into their swimwear and joined Spike and Sweetie Belle under the water. The four were having the time of their life as they could see more Water Pokémon up close and personal. While they were having a blast swimming around with the Pokémon back on the beachfront, all the fishing trainers had a different experience.
"Nothing!" said Applejack as her latest cast turned up empty.
"Five hours left!" shouted one of the assistants.
"That's not a lot of time left," said Sky as he redid his line.
"Hey, Rainbow!"
Silverbolt appeared as he was currently with another group member. They stopped by the beach to check on the chromatic-haired girl.
"How's it going?"
"Oh, all good. I've caught a ton of things," said the girl with a fake smile.
"Applejack?" responded Bolt as he gave an unamused expression to the country gal, hoping for a more honest answer.
"She ain't caught shit the past few hours!" answered the farmer bluntly before casting her line.
"Aj, don't tell him that!" shouted the chromatic-haired girl. "Look, I'm gonna get us something worthwhile."
"Well, you don't have much time left. So I suggest you get something at the least."
"Yeah, yeah. Just let me do my thing, alright!"
"Fine. We'll see you later tonight. Come on, Lyra. Let's go write our presentation," said Bolt as he left with their teammate to work on their project.
Rainbow was now sweating bullets. She had to snag something to score some points with little time left. Apple Bloom and Scootaloo had already decided which Pokémon to keep and present. Inside their tank, there was a Mantyke, as that was the best Pokémon they caught. With a Pokémon already secured for them, they continued to fish in hopes of potentially pulling something even more valuable. However, Rainbow currently had nothing to fall back on. The same could be said for Sky and Applejack, as neither had caught anything worthwhile. Both had caught at least ten Magikarps but knew they wouldn't score much with those picks.
"We need something," said Sky as he reeled his line in and sat on the sand. He pulled out a wrapped sandwich from his pocket and began to take a bite to replenish his energy.
"Don't fret, sugar; I'm not a master fisher for nothing," bragged the girl. "The key thing is patience."
Sky just took in Aj's words before he took another bite of his sandwich. At that moment, something caught the boy's eye. He couldn't fully make it out, but a shiny sparkle twinkled in the distance. He blinked initially as he stood up and looked in the direction of where the sparkle emitted. Another dazzle appeared as it really caught the boy's eye.
"Hey, Aj. Do you see that?"
"See what?"
"That! Look!"
The boy pointed in the direction he saw the sparkle. The country gal looked where her friend pointed, but she initially saw nothing. Soon, she saw the twinkle in the distance as it caught her eye.
"You saw that, right?"
"What is it?"
"I don't know. But I'm gonna find out. Are you coming?"
"Well, we still need something," said the country gal as they had yet to catch anything to contribute to their group's presentation.
"But what if that sparkle is a Pokémon? Imagine if we get it, we'd surely win first place."
"And if we don't, then we'll have run out of time to catch anything," countered the girl as she made a good point. "Why don't you go yourself? I'll stay here and continue to catch something. The rules said at least one of us needs something."
"You sure you can handle this on your own?"
"Sugarcube, have faith in me," winked the country gal.
"You're the best, Aj. I'll be back as soon as I can. Get us something good, alright!" stated the boy as he went off to explore the mysterious twinkle while the farmer continued to fish.
Back with Twilight, she had just finished swimming with the Water Pokémon while sitting on some rocks with Juniper, Spike, and Sweetie Belle. The Water Pokémon they spent time with were on the shore with them as they allowed the humans to pet them.
"Let's observe them a little more and then get to work," suggested Twilight.
"Right!" nodded Juniper.
"Why does it have to be a report? I suck at them!" said Spike.
"Don't worry, Spike. I'll help you," stated Sweetie Belle.
Twilight smiled at hearing the girl's offer to help her brother. At that moment, she noticed something. The girl spotted Sky a fair distance away as he seemed to be heading out of the marked area. She knew the boy was supposed to be with Applejack in trying to catch something, but the fact that he was leaving the area aroused her curiosity.
"Hey, Juniper. Isn't that Sky?"
"What's he doing?" responded the girl as they saw their friend disappear into the forest.
"He's not supposed to leave the area. I wonder what's up."
"Let's follow him."
"Right, Spike, stay here," instructed the bookworm as she left with her teammate to pursue their friend.
The boy didn't know what was happening as he watched his sister disappear. Sky was in the forest, trying to track down the sparkle he noticed from the beach. His journey had led him away from the shoreline as he approached the forest part of the camp; he knew that he was entering a restricted area, but he had to find out what that strange sparkle was. He was unaware that Twilight and Juniper had spotted him as the girls trailed him closely.
The girls were dressed backward as they looked to follow Sky. As they passed some bushes, they came to a clearing, and Sky was nowhere to be seen. The boy had slipped past the same bushes just moments before, and now it was as if he had vanished.
"Where'd he go?" asked Juniper.
At that moment, a loud crash was heard, and it began to rain. The two girls let out a yelp as they began to run. They approached a cave and quickly entered; they didn't get far before bumping into something that nearly caused them to fall back before their wrists grabbed them. Sky had caught the girls and stopped them from falling.
"What are you two doing here?" asked Sky. "Shouldn't you be working on our project?"
"We could ask you the same thing," responded Juniper as another thunder crash was heard.
Back at the beach, the rain was still falling. Most trainers had caught something and were now inside the main building to avoid the downpour. A few remained on the beach, including Rainbow and Applejack, as both had yet to catch anything. Even with the rain coming down on them, both were determined to get something to contribute.
"Girls, perhaps you should take a break and wait till the storm passes!" suggested Luna from the porch.
"No way!" shouted both girls, as they didn't want to lose precious time.
"I need something good!" barked Rainbow as she reeled her line in and reset it.
"I can't let the others down. I'm gonna catch something!" responded Applejack as she gripped her fishing pole tightly.
Rainbow reeled back and threw her line out as it splashed into the water pelted by the raindrops. A few moments passed as nothing happened, and soon, the girl felt a bite. Her fishing rod moved forward as she quickly yanked it back to avoid it flying out of her hands. She gripped it tightly as she tried to pull it back, but the strength of the catch proved a bit difficult. The chromatic-haired girl began to turn the wheel as she struggled to reel it in.
"Come on! Come on! Come on!" repeated the girl to herself, not wanting to let whatever she had gotten a hold of escape.
With one mighty pull and a fierce cry, Rainbow reeled back her fishing rod as she pulled whatever it was out of the water and onto the shoreline. The Pokémon she had caught was a large, blue, weedy seadragon with two branch-like horns on its head and two pairs of flippers on each side with a yellow underside belly, the only section of its scaly body that wasn't blue. Its tail was tightly curled up. There were thin spines with a single branch atop its head and thin, white fins under its cheeks. Two-pronged fins extended slightly past its cheeks.
"Yes, I got something. What are you?" said Rainbow, pulling out her Pokédex.
"Kingdra, the Dragon Pokémon, and the evolved form of Seadra. With the arrival of a storm at sea, this Pokémon will show itself on the surface. When a Kingdra and a Dragonite meet, a fierce battle ensues."
"Yes. That's a good catch!" said the girl.
"Two hours remain!" shouted the assistant.
Applejack was sweating a bit more, even with the rain on her. Rainbow took a moment to look at the Kingdra she had just reeled in. Hearing they had two hours left to fish brought her to a crossroads. She had a good catch, but she could get something even better and score more points for her team with two hours left. The only other Pokémon that might give her a run for her Kingdra was a Marshtomp that another team got. Rainbow looked back at the ocean as she had to think she could get something better than a Marshtomp, but… was it worth the risk? Get some points with a good catch, she just got, or go for first place and secure their position so that nobody else could pass them?
"I can do this. I know I can," said Rainbow as she released the Kingdra she just caught.
The Pokémon looked at her before it went back into the water. The chromatic-haired teen then reset her line and cast it out hoping to get something really good.
"So, you two were following me?" asked Sky as they all sat on the cave floor waiting for the storm.
"Yeah. We spotted you leaving the area and got concerned," said Twilight.
"Why did you leave? I thought you were helping Aj catch something?" asked Juniper.
"She's still catching something. I just spotted something that caught my eye."
"What was it?" asked the bookworm.
"Some kind of sparkle. No pun intended, Twilight," chuckled the boy given that was the girl's last name. "I wanted to see what it was. So I left Aj to continue fishing while I explored it. What about you two, have you finished the presentation?"
"Sort of. We managed to swim with some Water Pokémon," said Juniper.
"Sounds like you two had a fun time," smiled Sky before they all turned to the cave entrance to see the rain still falling.
"It's really coming down! I hope Applejack is okay fishing in this weather," said Twilight, knowing their stubborn friend would still be fishing even in bad weather as she was determined to get them something.
"Doesn't look like it's gonna stop anytime soon," said Juniper as she removed her glasses and cleaned the lenses. As she put them back on and adjusted them. The girl then noticed something as she looked into the cave. "Hey, look at this!"
Twilight and Sky turned as they looked deeper into the cave and saw what Juniper was seeing. A faint light of sorts was also deeper in the cave.
"What do you think that is?" asked Twilight.
"Let's go check it out," said Sky as he began to walk deeper into the cave.
The girls followed the boy as they looked to investigate the mysterious light. However, in the first few steps, the trio nearly tripped. The deeper they entered the cave, the darker and almost impossible to see.
"We need light!" said Twilight.
"I got it. Mareep!" said Juniper as she pulled out a Pokéball and tossed it.
"Mareep!" said the sheep Pokémon that emerged.
"Mareep, use Flash," instructed the girl.
The sheep raised its tail as it lit up, giving the trio enough light to see in front of them. Now that they could see where they were stepping, they continued heading toward the distant light as the sheep led the way. Eventually, the trio saw the light getting brighter and brighter as they approached the end of the cave. The trio came to something incredible: inside the cave, there was a massive pool of water with an island in the center that was luscious and green. The pool of water had a stream that led through a small opening in the wall, as one can assume it was connected to another water source.
"Woah!" said Sky, taking in such a beautiful sight.
"I can't believe there's something as beautiful as this growing in a cave. It's almost impossible," said Twilight, as the conditions for a healthy-looking island surrounded by a crystal clear blue pool of water had to be insane.
"Uh, guys!" said Juniper, getting the pair's attention.
Sky and Twilight looked where Juniper pointed and saw something in the water. In the pool, a bright light sparkled with the same twinkle that Sky had seen on the beach. However, the glowing light was coming toward the trio, making them all a bit nervous. Soon, the glowing light emerged from the water and created a sprout; the teens covered up to avoid being completely splashed. When it died down, they turned and looked at what emerged from the water. What stood before the humans was an elegant, sinuous Pokémon that resembled a sea serpent or oarfish. Its body was predominantly cream, while its fanlike tail came in various shades of blue and magenta. It had long red "hair" and curled red eyebrows that embellished crimson eyes.
"Wow. A Milotic!" said Twilight, in awe of the Pokémon's appearance and majesty beauty.
Sky pulled out his Pokédex and held it up to scan the Pokémon.
"Milotic, the Tender Pokémon, and the evolved form of Feebas. Milotic has inspired many artists. It has even been called the most beautiful Pokémon of all."
"I've never seen one up close before," said Juniper as she slowly approached the Pokémon.
Milotic looked at the girl approaching it as it used its feelings to sense her aura. Seeing as the girl didn't pose a threat, it lowered its head close to Juniper's hand and allowed her to pet it while giving a warm smile.
"With this, we might ace the report," said Sky as he approached the Milotic.
The boy looked at the Pokémon as it gazed at the boy. He was shown reaching up for it as Milotic instinctively pulled back; seeing how afraid it must've been, Sky slowly put his hand out and held it there. Not sensing any danger from the boy, Milotic slowly moved its head forward until its nose touched the boy's palm. Sky smiled, glad Milotic didn't see him as a threat. Before anything else could happen, Milotic turned and dove back into the water as everyone turned to avoid splashing. They turned around just in time to see Milotic enter through the small tunnel in the cave wall as it disappeared.
"Wait, don't go!" said Sky as they all rushed to the small opening and bent down.
"There's no way any of us can fit in there," said Twilight as they all appeared too big.
"Maybe not us. Buizel!" shouted the boy as he called on his Pokémon.
"Bui!" said the weasel as he appeared.
"See if you can, Milotic," said Sky, saluting and diving into the water as he entered the tunnel.
Some time had passed as Sky was pacing back and forth, waiting for Buizel to return. Juniper was already sketching the Milotic image they would present for their report, as Twilight was near some of the rocks as she bent down. The bookworm was observing something on the rocks as it caught her eye. She touched and passed it between her fingers as she looked at the substance.
"Where's Buizel?" said Sky as he was worried for his Pokémon.
A sound was heard as Buizel emerged from the water. Sky and the others noticed the Pokémon as he rushed to the water.
"Buizel, did you find Milotic?" asked Sky as his Pokémon shook his head. "Great, looks like Milotic is gone."
"Well, at least I was able to provide tons of sketches," said Juniper as she showed off her notepad and flipped through the pages of her drawings.
"That's good. Though, don't you think it's weird that a Milotic would be here?" said the boy.
"That's what I was thinking," responded Twilight, getting her teammates' attention. "Take a look at this!"
"What is that?" asked Sky as they looked at the rocks Twilight was investigating.
"This type of seaweed is a favorite among Water-type Pokémon. Even Milotic. But based on how much has been eaten, it's safe to assume that no other water types are around. So the Milotic must've been the one eating it all. And based on that tunnel, it must've used that to travel here from wherever it lived."
"Wow, that's some good deduction work, Twilight," said Juniper, impressed by the girl's intelligence.
Before Twilight could bask in the glory of her smarts, an alarm went off on her smartwatch. As she looked at the time, her eyes went wide.
"We need to get back now!" said the bookworm.
"Aw, shit!" exclaimed Sky as they had completely lost track of time.
The boy called back his Buizel as they raced out of the cave. The rain had completely stopped upon exiting, and they noticed a rainbow in the sky. The trio took a moment to admire it before booking it back to the campground.
It was dinnertime, and the groups were presenting their findings. Sky's group was about to present, and Twilight began to talk about the Milotic they had seen.
"And so the Milotic was able to use the tunnel to get from the cave to where it lived," said Twilight as she explained their adventure.
"Well done. An exceptional report. I'd give you all first place," said Celestia. "However… you three left the area without asking permission."
"For breaking the rules, we'll subtract five points for your three. So instead of 50, you'll get 35 points."
"Oh, come on," said Sky, as that was the second time they lost points.
"However, Miss Applejack remained in the area and was tasked with catching something," said Celestia as everyone looked at the farmer.
"What did you end up catching?" asked Sky.
"Well…" said the country gal as she pulled the sheet off the tank and revealed her catch.
Inside the tank was a Quagsire as it swam about for all to see.
"Wow, nice catch, Aj!" said the boy.
"It was the best I could do at the last minute," said the girl as she'd gone down to the wire to get the Quagsire.
"Since Miss Applejack managed to land a valuable catch, we'll give you all seven points back to your score," said Luna. "So that brings your score up to 43, putting you all in third place overall!"
The group shouted at each other, excited after hearing that, while Rainbow was ticked off.
"I hate losing!" said the girl as they had dropped from first place to fourth.
"You're the one who gave up a Kingdra," remarked Silverbolt as Rainbow gambled her catch for something else, only to end up with a Luvdisc.
"And so, let's give a big round of applause for the Orange Team for coming in first due to Miss Apple Bloom's group getting the biggest catch!" said Luna as everyone began to applaud the three girls and Spike as they were the clear winners of today's activity.
"What did your sister catch?" asked Sky as he leaned toward Applejack.
"Uh-"
The girl whispered into the boy's ear as he couldn't believe what he heard.
"A Wailord!" exclaimed Sky as his voice echoed for all to hear into the night.
