9:11 PM Japan Time, RECT Inc., Tokyo:
Captain America II looked out the side of a US Army helicopter that had just picked him, Colonel America, and Iron Man II from the police station where Kikuoka temporarily held them. Kikuoka himself was in the helicopter as their Japanese liaison.
"So... We're heading back to the RECT headquarters.." Captain America II explained. "Still got a huge mess to clean up and to wrap everything up.."
"I know," Kikuoka replied...
"Also, we can learn anything else from the databanks... Assuming that they're not rigged to blow up or anything.." Iron Man II grimaced.
Colonel then asked, "Mr. Kikuoka, do you have any information on what happened with Captain Hernandez and his unit?"
"From what the reports have read." Kikuoka began. "He was killed in an explosion after triggering the bomb hooked to the harddrive in Nobuyuki's office."
Colonel America shook his head. Nobuyuki was one step ahead of them.
Captain America II frowned in dismay. "Hernandez... This was suppose to be a quick mission." He lamented.
Kikuoka looked to the Captain. "Was he a friend of yours?"
"One of many good ones," Chris replied, "and yet another one to mourn."
"I'm very sorry..." Kikuoka said with sympathy.
Chris shook his head. "Comes with the territory."
"We had to go through it during the civil war.." Iron Man II explained with a somber tone. "So many people died in that war..."
"So I heard," Kikuoka said, "must have been awful."
"Most of the country actually got off relatively easy," Chris said, "my neck of the woods saw the most people killed in the whole war."
"Twenty million total... That's what I've heard.." Kikuoka observed.
Colonel glanced at his Captain, processing the loss of 7-4. "And the vast majority where Captain Burke was."
"Which was the States' southwest.." Kikuoka surmised.
"Got that right," Colonel America said as the US helicopter flew over the RECT campus. The pilot finds a place to land and begins to descend towards a clearing in the campus. Kikuoka saw the campus buildings damaged in many places...
After several seconds, the helicopter touched down on the ground. Iron Man II opens the door, allowing Colonel America to step out first. Then Captain America II, and Kikuoka before Iron Man stepped out last.
"Colonel Rogers!" Captain Pierson came running up his superior.
"Captain Pierson.." Rogers replied. Everyone stepped away from the helicopter.
"Excellent work securing RECT."
"Thanks, Colonel. Despite the losses, we did the impossible.." Pierson smirked with confidence.
Chris stepped forward. "Good that you're in one piece."
"Glad to be in one piece... Given what has happened." Pierson sighed.
"Hernandez," Chris muttered.
"He didn't even get a chance to react before the bomb exploded.."
"So did any of 7-4 survive?" Rogers asked.
"We managed to get a headcount on the survivors.."
"And?" Chris asked.
"A team of four just far enough away," Pierson indicated.
"What a disaster..." Preston sighed.
"Where's Anderson?" Rogers asked.
"Captain Anderson's still inside going through RECT's mainframe." Pierson answered. "He's convinced that he could find more evidence within the files."
"Wait... there may still be explosives," Chris protested.
Kikuoka chuckled. "Don't worry, my American friend." He pointed to a group of uniformed JSDF carrying out crates. "I've contacted the JSDF bomb squads to assist Anderson of disarming the bombs.. I've also got my own cyber-investigators to assist him and his team in extracting RECT's files."
"That's good to hear.." Preston smirked. One of Kikuoka's men came running up to him.
"What is it, Private Goro.." Kikuoka asked.
"Bad news... several information servers have been scrubbed clean."
"What about the rest?"
"Badly corrupted... they planted some sort of virus to destroy data upon access by non-Hydra accounts."
"But... that's not all that's missing is it?" Rogers asked.
Goro shook his head. "Several of RECT's senior engineers are unaccounted for."
Suddenly a rifle was racked. Everyone turned to see Chris Burke with his M4v1 at low ready, staring at Kikuoka intensely.
"They might still be inside..." Chris surmised. "It's best to have your men to remain alert..."
Pierson gave Chris a look. "What do you mean? We've swept the place..."
"There are no doubt secret exits and tunnels for contingencies," Chris pointed out. "I'd start sweeping for any secret passages and tunnels.." He suggested.
"Unlikely we'd find them by now... but never hurts." Kikuoka looked to Goro, "please assist Captain Pierson for another sweep."
"I'll take point," Chris said, "anything happens, they'll be dealing with me."
"Alright, we're heading back inside.." Pierson called out.
Chris then looked to Preston, gesturing with his rifle. "Hope you're ready for the rest of the long night."
Preston, takes up his SCAR-25 rifle and nods. "I'm born ready, Cap.."
Kikuoka's brow quirked at Preston opting for a rifle when he was wearing a high-tech armor. Chris noticed and said to Kikuoka, "we don't need so much firepower to bring the whole campus down on us below."
Preston holsters the rifle before he activated the suit's helmet to cover his head.
"Let's move," Chris said as he lowered his helmet visor and led the way. They've made their way inside the RECT building.
Kirigaya Residence:
Asuna rests her head on Kazuto's shoulders after they both gazed outside the window. Kazuto stroked her hair gently. He felt like this was a dream. But with every touch he felt from her, every kiss on his lips tells him this is real.
"Well kids," Midori said... "It has been quite an event, hasn't it?"
"Yes..." Suguha agreed. "Yes it was, mom..."
Suguha began to doze off. "I just need to... get into... bed..."
"I guess..." Alex yawned. "I guess it's time for bed.." Suguha got up slowly and helped Alex up on his feet. Kazuto and Asuna started to doze off. However, Kazuto manages to keep himself awake. He had to get himself and his wife to his bedroom.
"Suguha can lend you some pajamas, Asuna.." Midori said.
"Do you mind, Suguha?" Asuna asked.
"Actually, I don't mind.." Suguha let out a smile. "After all, we're in-laws.."
"And I'm thankful for you, Suguha," Asuna beamed. Suguha giggles before gently dragging Alex to her bedroom. Midori held Asuna and Kazuto in her arms with love in her eyes. Both Kazuto and Asuna smiled and relaxed in Midori's embrace.
"You both have made me very happy... And one day, you can introduce us to your children.."
"Mom," Kazuto blushed slightly, "a bit young for that-"
"I know... But you mentioning Yui and Strea makes me want to meet them more.." Midori beamed.
Kazuto and Asuna gasped and looked to one another. "Did we just mention that?" Asuna asked, "I thought you and Mr. Kirigaya were napping."
"We've overheard your conversation.." Midori confessed. "And even though we were surprised that you have children, we're very proud of both you and Asuna.."
The two blushed, but gazed deep into Midori's eyes. "Even though they are advanced AI?" Kazuto asked.
"Even if they're AI, we'll still love them as we love you.." Midori answered.
"And besides, from what you're implying," Minetaka added, "these are not your run-of-the-mill AI."
"I know that you and Midori-san will love them." Asuna said. "Yui's very sweet.. And, even though I hardly knew Strea. But Strea's very nice too.."
"They have been blessings in our lives, even though Strea came along much later," Kazuto agreed.
"I can't wait to meet them.." Minetaka smiled.
Asuna then hugged Kazuto as she began to tire. "May I ask you and Midori-san... if I can be with Kazuto tonight?"
Minetaka and Midori looked at each other, then back to Asuna and smiled. "Of course you may spend the night in Kazuto's room.." Minetaka replied. "Given that you two are married and all.."
"Mind if Alex spends the night in my room too, dad?" Suguha asks. Still holding her beloved in her arms.
Minetaka looked at Alex. Who's still holding his shoulder.
The male Kirigaya adult shrugged. "Since Alex-kun's still recovering from his injury... I guess he can spend the night with you.."
He gave Alex a warning stare. To which Alex nodded in response.
Suguha smiled softly. "Thank you, Daddy."
"You're welcome, Sugu.." Minetaka nodded. Suguha tugged lightly on Alex's arm, guiding her to her bedroom.
"I've left my bag in Kazuto's room..." Alex said.
"I'll get it.." Midori chimed before she let go of Kazuto and Asuna and headed into the former's bedroom. A few seconds later, she returns and informs him that she'd moved his duffle bag into Suguha's bedroom.
"Thanks..." Alex smiled.
"You get a good night's rest in your and my Sugu's loving arms," Midori winked.
Alex blushed from Midori's comment.
"Honey," Minetaka groaned. Midori giggled at her husband's reaction.
Alex whispered to Suguha, "he doesn't trust me."
"He's just watching out for me.." Suguha explained. "Especially after what happened..."
Alex thought he saw a glint of fear in Suguha. He held her to comfort her. Despite the pain, he brought her in his arms. "He won't hurt you anymore... You're safe now.."
The two went upstairs. Shortly after, Kazuto and Asuna headed upstairs and arrived at the former's bedroom. He slides the door open and Asuna observes the interior of her husband's bedroom. She saw games, a custom computer setup, books, and action figures. She saw his bed that's situated next to his computer desk and the window above his bed. The glow of the moonlight shines through the window.
She smiled softly as her Kazuto held her. "Lovely bedroom you have, Kazuto..." She commented. "It's so... you."
"Thanks, Asuna.." Kazuto smiled.
"You're really are into gaming.." She said..
"And computers..." Kazuto added. Kazuto guided Asuna to his bed. They both sat down on the side of the bed and held each other tenderly. Asuna rubbed Kazuto's hand and chest, marveling in the feel of her husband. Kazuto gently strokes Asuna's hair and shoulder while he gazes into her eyes. The moonlight shines over Asuna, giving her a stunning luminance of her beauty.
"You don't know how long I longed for this..." Kazuto confided. "Ever since we cleared SAO, we thought it was the end for us... And when I logged out and found you... My heart ached to have you in my arms..."
"And here we are..." Tears welled in Kazuto's eyes... "The battle against Hydra has been won... And it's over..." It was then sobs started to take over.
"I know what you mean, Kazuto..." Asuna agreed while she stroked his cheek. "It has been hard for me in the past two months..." She felt his tears coating her fingers. "But I never gave up, I kept on fighting for you..."
Tears welled in her eyes as well. "And now finally... I get to be with you..." She smiled as tears streamed down her face. Asuna stroked Kazuto's face. "And we'll get married for real in the future and have children of our own, and grow old together. We'll enjoy life every single day as if it's our last.. Sharing and cherish new memories for us together... And one day, we'll bring both Yui and Strea into the real world and we'll have a very large family."
"And I will, Asuna..." Kazuto then said after he contained his sobs. "I'm considering of signing up with Anderson Tech Industries. To study the technologies there. That way, I can find a way to bring both our daughters into the real world..."
"That would be wonderful," Asuna beamed. "I'll be looking forward to it.."
Asuna leaned in and gave Kazuto a kiss. Kazuto leaned back and let Asuna push him back onto his bed. The two beloved couple deepen the kiss passionately.
"Asuna..." Kazuto moaned as he stuck his tongue into Asuna's mouth.
"Kazuto.." Asuna moaned as she wrapped her tongue around Kazuto's, wrestling for dominance. She pressed into Kazuto as the two gently rekindled their love into their sleeping moment...
RECT Inc:
Thomas Anderson typed into the keyboard belonging to one of the company's monitors.
He bit a grunt back as he and his Air Force team worked with the Japanese investigators. "Nobuyuki was mad, but thorough..." he muttered. Large sections of the RECT database had indeed been cleared out. While some of the database mainframes are corrupted by failsafe digital walls. These files weren't like the ones released to the internet back in 2014. Those files, despite being encrypted, were easy to decrypt over time. This however, was much different. These had active countermeasures to thwart decryption.
"Trinity's gonna have a challenge breaking into these files.." He said to himself.
One young Japanese investigator swore. "There's nothing in the RECT databanks. Nothing..." He stated.
An Air Force technician chimed in. "This Hydra cell clearly knows what they are doing..."
"And this may take longer to decrypt."
One the the other Rangers then said, "whatever you brainiacs do, just make sure nothing else blows up with us here."
"We've done a few bomb sweeps on every floor of this company, as well as disarmed several bombs we've found.." Anderson pointed out. "Hopefully, they're no explosive surprises..."
"Yeah," another older Ranger gave a sarcastic chuckle, "because Howler 7-4 certainly got one."
"Also," Anderson added. "we're on the lookout for any secret passages in the building. So far, nothing..."
With Captain America and Iron Man:
"You called it, sir..." Iron Man II said as he looked out into a deserted underground hangar... "They're definitively been one step ahead of us.."
Captain America II, Iron Man II, and Howler 7-3 saw that several Quinjets had gone missing from their spots, and there were no Hydra personnel left. "It looks like the guys and gals we nabbed upstairs were small fry left to fend for themselves," Pierson remarked.
"And there's no telling where they've gone.." Iron Man II remarked.
Captain America II tried his communicator. "This is Captain America to Colonel America, Captain to Colonel. Anything on your end?"
"What is it, Captain?" The Colonel asked.
"Could you please ask Kikuoka if there were any unusual aircraft launches and trajectories in the vicinity of the RECT campus?" Captain America II asked, "we've discovered an underground escape hangar with aircraft missing."
"Standby.." There was chatter on the other end. Captain America waited for answers.
"Colonel?"
"Kikuoka's surprised about the hanger itself.." Colonel America said.
"Please let me speak to him, sir," the Captain asked.
"Standby.." A few seconds later..
"This is Kikuoka.."
"Mr. Kikuoka," Captain America spoke, "I need to know if any ATC within a one hundred mile radius of this campus picked up any unusual aviation patterns on radar or not."
"I'll see what I can do and I'll get to you, Captain." Kikuoka replied.
As the communication cut out, he told Pierson, "strip this hangar of any equipment and data you can find, and be careful of fail-safes."
"Will do, Cap.." Pierson replied. He begins scanning the hanger. Starting with the work bench in the corner. Captain America went about inspecting one of the Quinjets with his lieutenant.
"Still can't believe that Hydra survived this entire time.." Iron Man II commented while inspecting one of the Quinjets.
"The Colonel told me much about Hydra from his time in World War II, and then the infiltration of SHIELD eleven years ago," Captain America II told his lieutenant, "they exist for the purpose of subjugation and war."
"As well as breed chaos.." Iron Man added.
"Well that's only a means to an end," Captain replied, "their goal has always to fashion a world order entirely in their own image."
"I've also heard that they went rogue during World War II, planning to take out the Axis as well as the Allies.."
"True, according to the Colonel," Captain America corroborated, "it was natural that they would not confine themselves to Hitler's shadow."
"Which makes Hydra even more unpredictable.." Iron Man surmised.
"Correct..." Captain said as he rubbed the Hydra Attack Quinjet's surface, "and I doubt we've even scratched the surface of Hydra Japan's capabilities and influence."
"And there's no telling how long this will take to eradicate Hydra from Japan.." Iron Man scanned the Quinjet. "And if they're other Hydra cells throughout the world.."
Captain America II then turned to Iron Man II. "We deal with Nobuyuki first. That is our first step in getting this under control."
"Right.." Iron Man II nodded in agreement. "Once that's taken care of, we'll determine the exact number of Hydra cells throughout the world..."
"Hmm..." Captain glanced out towards the hangar door. 'Only that the question now is if we can be restored to combat status...' he thought.
"Got nothing over here so far!" Pierson called out.
"Very well," Captain America said, "take whatever you can and leave the rest to be tagged for recovery."
"I guess there's nothing else for us to find, other than the Quinjets.." Iron Man remarked.
"These are pretty up-armored models," one of the soldiers said, "these bastards must be gearing up for World War Three."
"It's for their attempt to take over the world..." Captain America II surmised. "But they've failed... for now..."
Everyone leaves the hanger and returned to the RECT lobby above.
Narita Airport:
A certain male heir of the Yuuki family rushed past the baggage claim. The flat-screen TV screens showed the news report regarding the incidents at RECT and the Nobuyuki Estate. Kouichirou Yuuki grit his teeth as he saw his family's business campus on fire and occupied by soldiers.
"Asuna-chan.." He muttered. He also witnessed Nobuyuki chained up and violated his little sister and another girl. He had been tuned into the plane's provided Wi-Fi and saw the whole thing. On how he's planning to molest them in the real world. He also proceeded to stab and torture the two boys that were in the void with them. That alone made his blood boil. He had warned both his parents that Nobuyuki was bad news. Now it had come back to bite with the revelation of Hydra's resurgence in Japan, and their total control over RECT.
This, along with how his parents, especially mother, ignored all these warnings proved that he was right. He'd also saw news reports on how they were also kidnapped by Hydra.
He and his guards rushed to their waiting car... he needed to get back as soon as he could.
"To the hospital, and fast!" He ordered the driver.
"I can't..." the driver told Kouichirou, "heard that hospital's locked down tight. There are police and American soldiers crawling all over."
Kouichirou swore under his breath. Asuna was in that hospital when Hydra attacked in the parking lot. There was no doubt that Nobuyuki tried to kidnap her while she was in her weak state. He reached for his phone and scrolled through his contacts. He called father's number. However, it went straight to voicemail. He even went to his mother's... which was disconnected. He contacted Sada, also voicemail.
"Come on! Is anyone still alright!?" He tried the hospital, hoping someone will pick up the phone from there. It went to the receptionist's ringtone. It rang a few times.
"Come on! Pick up!" There was a click.
"Hello?"
"Hello, my name is Kouichirou Yuuki. I'm calling for my sister, Asuna Yuuki. Is she alright?"
"One moment please.."
There was some indiscernible chatter over the phone. Kouchirou waited as the chatter continued. "I'm sorry, sir. She is no longer here."
Kouichirou felt his heart stop beating. "Y-You mean... She's dead?" His hands trembled, making it hard to hold the phone.
"N-no! I meant, she's no longer at this hospital... discharged."
Kouichirou breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you so much..." He said at last. It was then a thought occurred in his mind. Asuna's been under the NerveGear for over two years. Most of the survivors of SAO recovered in a couple of months while others are still recovering.
"How can you just discharge a patient who is just barely able to walk!?"
"Well... It turns out that Miss Yuuki's up and walking moments before the hospital was attacked."
"Really?" Kouichirou asked.
"That's correct. After everything calmed down, Asuna was escorted out of the hospital after being discharged.."
Kouichirou was relieved. "Thank you... but who escorted her out?"
After a few moments. "Seijirou Kikuoka, head of the Virtual Division. Along with officers of the US Army Rangers.."
"Very well," Kouichirou said, "thank you."
"You're welcome. Have a good evening.."
Kouichirou hung up, ending the call. He then tried to contact Kikuoka. It rang a few times before a voice answered. "Hello?"
"Kikuoka-san, it's Kouichirou."
"How can I help you, Kouichirou?"
"It's my sister..."
"Asuna Yuuki?" Kikuoka deduced with a question.
"Of course. I heard she was discharged."
"Yes... She was brought with me, Kazuto, and the officers of the Howler platoon for debriefing about what happened.."
"Wait... that Howler Platoon?" Kouichirou was surprise.
"Correct. They've presented interesting evidence during their mission.." Kikuoka replied.
"I didn't know they were in Japan!"
"They came under their own discretion regarding the Pacifican War Criminal from the States' second civil war.." He explained.
"Wait... there was a war criminal in the company!?" Kouichirou was shocked.
"Yep... You've probably heard of a individual named Sugou Nobuyuki?" Kikouka asked.
"That's our chief employer," the Yuuki son reminded.
"Indeed. He went by an alias... Barnas Shinsei..."
Kouichirou's eyes widened in horror. He had heard that name when he was living and working in Los Angeles and Dallas. "He was The Barnas Shinsei?"
"Correct... and the Supreme Commander of Hydra himself."
The male Yuuki heir nearly dropped his phone in shock. Nobuyuki, aka Barnas Shinsei, leader of Hydra? It was far worse than he had imagined.
"Where is he now?" He asks, snapping himself out of shock.
"The Americans captured him trying to kidnap Asuna and Kazuto at the hospital. He's being transferred into our custody."
"Good.." He replied darkly. That was good news after what has happened in ALO. But hearing him trying to kidnap his sister and this Kazuto would only add to his rage.
"So this Kazuto..." Kouichirou moved on, "is he the same Kirito I saw fighting alongside Asuna?"
"Correct..." Kikuoka answered. "After finishing their debriefing, Asuna elected to stay with his family for the night."
"At least she's safe... but I don't know very much about this Kirito..."
"From what I've heard from Asuna's testimonies.. Kirito, or Kazuto Kirigaya, have became close with her during their time in SAO..." Kikuoka continued. "And he, along with his fellow SAO survivors, mounted a rescue mission of their own when they've learned of Asuna's presence in Alfheim Online."
"I'd like to meet Kirito, since he seems to be around my sister a lot."
"And I'm sure that you will.." Kikuoka chuckled. "However, I'm pretty sure that they're asleep by now. Giving how they've gone through a huge ordeal.."
"Then I won't bother them," Kouichirou concurred, "but I would like to see her as soon as I can."
"I can give you the address of the Kirigayas tomorrow morning..." Kikuoka suggested. "Also, the Yuuki Estate is surrounded by both police and news reporters. So getting in will be hard.."
"I see... can I at least see Mother and Father though?" Kouichirou asked, "I've been worried about them."
"Your father's been escorted by the military.. While your mother... She's with the police..."
"At least they are alive..." Kouichirou sighed.
"Do you wish to see them now?" Kikuoka asks.
"I have to at least speak with one of them..."
"I'll see what I can do and I'll call you back as soon as I can..."
"Thank you, Kikuoka-san..." Kouichirou then gave Kikuoka his phone number. After which, the call ended. Kouichirou slumped back into the car seat. He told the driver to take him to the nearest arranged hotel.
Naval Air Station Atsugi:
Shouzou Yuuki sat in the room with the Mitchells. They were about to get a visit from the Naval Criminal Investigation Services of the US Navy, and the Japanese Maritime Defense Force Intelligence Service regarding their knowledge of Hydra's inner workings inside RECT and its military operations. They received medical examinations for any further injuries. Despite some cuts and bruises, they're healthy.
Shouzou kept his eyes shut, as though in meditation. Both David and Jonathan Mitchell remained silent. Shouzou decided to experiment more with his re-emerging powers. It didn't take long for Shouzou to hear the voices around him. All of them are military personal, either chatting with each other or they're in deep thoughts. It has increased tenfold. But the male Yuuki adult maintained his concentration.
He also heard the thoughts of the Mitchell military servicemen that are sitting next to him. Focusing on the young officer.
'Hard to believe all of this happened... And Hydra...' Jon shook his head. 'I hope Alex is okay... Can't believe that monster tortured him...'
Shouzou then shifted focus to David Mitchell...
'Thank the Good Lord that Alex's alright..' He thought. 'And I hope he's taking good care of that poor girl who was molested...'
Shouzou knew that David wasn't referring to Asuna, but the blonde-haired girl. Shouzou then felt the oncoming presence of the investigators. And sure enough, the door opens up and three officers walked through.
David and Jon rose up to salute.
"Gentlemen.." The senior officer saluted back. David and Jon sat back down.
"Mr. Yuuki," the JMSDF investigator greeted. Shouzou stood up to greet him.
"Raizo Koga.." He introduced himself. "I'm sorry for your ordeal."
"I'm just thankful that everyone made it out.." Shouzou grieved. "I still can't believe all that happened..."
The American Navy investigator looked to Shouzou. "Believe me, everyone's in a state of shock.."
"And that it why we are here tonight."
"Right.." Koga agreed as they sat down. "Let's starts when you met the Mitchells here..."
With Kyouko Yuuki:
She sat alone in the interrogation room, waiting to be questioned. Not having access to any makeup, the circles under her eyes showed with the strain of her hostage ordeal. As she sat in silence, she reflected the months after the SAO incident began. Kyouko had plans for her daughter's future. To make sure that she lives a better life and pass the success of the Yuuki family's name. But the Sword Art Online death game changed all that.
For two years, it was like dealing with an absent daughter who could just as well been dead. Which is why after the death toll continued to mount almost every single day, she stopped making visits at the hospital. But her husband and elder son continued. While it seemed callous on the surface...
It was also no doubt that the rest of the trapped players were slaughtering each other in the made-up world. Which explains the mounting death toll in the news. Some would have accuse Kyouko of being callous, but for her, it was more of not wanting to deal with the hard emotions that came with the difficult anticipation.
During last year, she met with the chief employer of her husband's company.. During the meeting, Sugou Nobuyuki vowed to help the Yuukis save their daughter from the death game. And in her deepest weariness of the whole affair, she gave full approval... And in exchange, he asked for her daughter's hand in marriage. Which she also gave full approval...
'What had I been thinking...' The proof that the suitor she hand-picked herself, a leader of Hydra, had captured 300 players within the RECT company...
And the first time she heard Asuna's voice in the two years came in the form of a recording of her swearing allegiance to Hydra. She refused to believe the fact that she could be amongst the players killing others for fun in SAO. But hearing her own daughter siding with Hydra... It was too much for her. It was only until she met Ronin that she learned what had actually happened while she and Sada were held hostage. How Asuna managed to hijack the ALO's GM consoles to broadcast the truth about Nobuyuki's goals with Hydra to the world.
Never in her wildest dreams was Asuna that brave. She risked herself to spread the message to everyone. Something about Asuna had changed so much for her to do that. Perhaps being trapped in SAO changed her during the past two years may have something to do with her newfound bravery? She didn't know.
Her thoughts were interrupted however when the door opens.
"Mrs. Yuuki." One of the investigators said as he walks inside along with two police officers.
"Gentlemen," Kyouko rose and gave a dignified bow despite her weary appearance.
"It has been quite a night.." The investigator remarked as Kyouko sat back down. "I hope you're up for what we are about to ask."
"I am.." Kyouko put on her business face.
The investigator, who introduced himself as Yusuo Goto, began. "You're aware of what has happened?"
"I have heard bits and pieces..."
"And that how Nobuyuki's used RECT to conduct his experiments for Hydra?" Goto added.
Kyouko nodded. "One of his armed men admitted to that when they took me and my maid."
"And have you heard about your daughter, Asuna, have revealed the truth about Hydra's existence in RECT?"
Kyouko pursed her lips. "I haven't... Since the captors never posses a TV set... So, my maid and I were completely in the dark.." It was not entirely true, but after treating Sada, Ronin told Kyouko to not reveal anything about himself.
"Alright then... Then I assume that you didn't see any of the further broadcasts that came from the Alfheim Online server itself.." Goto remarked.
"No..."
"Your husband's job was one of the main CEOs of RECT. Correct?" Goto then asked.
"Correct," Kyouko said, "and Nobuyuki is the Chief of RECT Progress, our subdivision."
"And neither of you nor your husband were aware of Nobuyuki's activities while working in RECT?"
Kyouko shook her head. "Not at all."
"Also, you are very aware that there will be an investigation of your husband's company due to Nobuyuki's experiments?"
Kyouko bowed her head. "I understand... and we will cooperate fully to ensure that justice will be served for those who have been wronged and betrayed by this subversive man."
"That's good to hear..." Goto replied. "There's massive uproar in not just Japan, but around the world... And we've gotten reports from hospitals of players experiencing phantom pain when being injured while logged on..."
Kyouko stiffened up.
"Not trying to accuse you or anything.. But they're a lot of people that will start asking questions regarding with RECT... Because as you know, it's not looking good for its image..."
"If I can speak in my family's defense," Kyouko began...
"Go ahead..."
"My husband and I..."
Goto leaned forward to listen.
"...We were tricked by Nobuyuki..." She said. "Our families have known one another for years... but we had no inkling that the Nobuyukis were involved with Hydra." She continued. "To be honest, we were as shocked when our captors explained everything to us... They wanted us to participate in their new world order..."
"And?" Goto asked.
"And they were gonna harm us if we didn't comply..." Kyouko breathed. "They wanted me to surrender our financial assets and savings to finance their campaign of world dominance."
"I see..." Goto observed.
"And your response?"
"We didn't have a choice. They had guns on us, they'd threaten us..."
Goto looked to one of the officers beside him. "We've found the bodies of your captors, all of them had guns.. They were pretty badly burnt in the explosion, but their weapons were high-end military grade assault rifles and machine guns."
It was then the officer then said. "Which begs the question... How did you and Sada survived that explosion?" Kyouko thought carefully, as it involved one of her best-guarded personal secrets.
"Well?" Goto asked.
"I managed to fight back and kill one of the guards." Kyouko explained. "I've managed to distract the guard and wrestled for his gun.." She rubbed her hand. "It was after he shot Sada in the shoulder."
She continues. "And... And after that.. I'm not sure what happened. It all happened so fast..."
"But... you escaped with Sada," Goto finished.
"I have... I remember carrying Sada as I ran out of the warehouse before it exploded.." Kyouko explained.
Goto mused as he took notes.
"Looking back now, I'm still amazing that I was able to bring myself to overpower them and escape with our lives.." she lamented. She looked down at her balled-up hands, reflecting on her own dormant powers.
"Well, adrenaline rush can do that to people.." Goto remarked while he took more notes.
"I managed to get myself and Sada to another building and hide there as the bombs went off... And remained hidden until the police arrived..." She finished.
"I see..." Silence filled the room. Kyouko gave Goto a gaze, wondering what was next.
"I guess that's all the information we need..." Goto said as he stood up.
"So what happens now?" Kyouko asked.
"We'll put all this on file. And when we come back, you just need a few signatures and you'll head on home.." Goto answered. "Although... Getting back inside your home may be tough... Given there's news reports surrounding the Yuuki Estate... We're keeping all of them in check for the time being and so far, nothing's happened..."
Kyouko always dreaded the media... and that was now topping the sequence of ordeals she and her family were put through.
'If things have gone differently..' She thought to herself. 'We wouldn't be in this predicament...'
She wanted to strangle Nobuyuki for doing this. However, deep down, she knew that she'd handpicked Nobuyuki out of desperation. She just wanted Asuna to be returned safe and sound.
Goto then saw the circles around Kyouko's eyes. "You've been through a rough time.." He observed. Goto waved to one of the officers in the room.
"What's the situation at the Yuuki Estate?" He asks.
"Media is camped out there, but we've got our units on crowd control present."
"Is there any possibility that Mrs. Yuuki can return home without being hassled by the press?"
"We can try with a police escort."
"Okay, it may draw attention, but it's better than nothing."
"And my husband?" Kyouko asked. "Where is he?"
"From what I've heard. He's been taken by the military for questions during his capture within RECT.." Goto answered.
"I see..." Kyouko kept her composure, but sounded disappointed.
"We'll do the best we can to keep the press at bay.." Goto reassured her.
"Thank you gentlemen..." Kyouko expressed. She rose up, but then remembered Asuna. "What about my daughter, Asuna?" She asked. "What happened to her and where is she?"
"We've contacted the hospital shortly after the shootout ceased." Goto began. "We've got word that your daughter's been discharged from the hospital..." And then he adds. "... she went with her boyfriend and his dad."
The female Yuuki adult did a double-take. "Boyfriend?"
"Why yes..."
This sudden news was a shocker for Kyouko.
"... and he risked his neck taking on the Supreme Commander of Hydra himself in ALO and the hospital from what I heard," Goto revealed.
"H-He has?"
"It's on the news and on the game streams," Goto added. "Like I said before, there's massive uproar in the take of the broadcasts... You can check them if you wish..."
"I... I will," Kyouko said. If she wasn't so tired and drained, she would be more curious. The stress and sleep deprivation were getting to her. And she begins to doze off as Goto and the two police officers left the room.
"Hydra really messed her up good..."
With Shouzou Yuuki:
Shouzou was feeling the fatigue. He and the Mitchells are in the process of finishing up with their debriefing. Shouzou had tried to tell everything he had learned about Hydra and Nobuyuki. While both David and Jon Mitchell filled in the blanks.
"So other than what Nobuyuki himself told you..." Commander Danvers finished... "Anything else you can tell us?"
"Nothing that comes to mind..." David replied as he shook his head.
"No, except that if there are further operations against Hydra..." Jon admitted, "I want in."
"These people have caused so much trouble and grief in the past.." He stated. "And now, they've gone and hurt innocent people in the progress.."
"Take it up the chain of command," Danvers just told Jon, "besides, you should be a bit embarrassed that you had yourself rescued by land lubbers in the Army."
"True..." Jon shook his head... "But still..."
"Jon..." David placed his hand on his elder son's shoulder. "Be grateful that we are all alive."
Jon wanted to protest. But he didn't as he knew that his father is right.
"In any case, the US Army has ordered Howler Platoon to stand down at Camp Zama," Koga revealed, "so there will be no further operations pending investigations."
"At least the whole ALO incident's under wraps..." Jon remarked. To which both his father and Shouzou Yuuki agreed.
"I believe we've gotten information regarding Nobuyuki..." Koga then said.
"What concerns me though," Danvers' lieutenant said, "is what we didn't see. I doubt we've seen the last of Hydra."
"True, but we cannot act any further without actionable intel," Commander Danvers sighed, "anyways, I think we should get these men into barracks until further questioning or release."
"Alright..." The Lieutenant complied. "Now, you three will just follow me to the barracks..."
Jonathan glanced over to Shouzou. "Hope you don't mind bunks, old man."
"I can manage..." Shouzou gave a small smile.
"They're hard and cramped," Jonathan indicated.
"I had worse.." Shouzou joked. It would at the very least afford Shouzou the peace and quiet... to rediscover his powers.
"Alright then..." Jon shrugged. As the three were dismissed, David walked behind with Shouzou. With Jon in front.
"So... you didn't say anything about your projecting voices into our heads," David said.
"It has to be a secret.." Shouzou replied in a hushed tone.
"Then... I was not imagining things," David now knew.
"You'd be surprise of what Kyouko and I used to do in the past.."
"Then... I understand..."
After a minute, they reached the barracks.
"And we're here..." The lieutenant said as he opens the door for them. "Good night, Captain Mitchell," the officer saluted.
"Good night.." The Mitchell officers saluted back. Shouzou waved to the lieutenant as he turned in for the night... As the Mitchells quickly fell asleep, Shouzou just lay on his back, starting at the ceiling. He exhaled and hummed as he closed his eyes. He was not going to sleep yet though... He begins to concentrate. He wanted to reach out to his family... He decides to focus on locating his family. The telepath sensed for his wife and Asuna...
After a few minutes, he senses Asuna's presence. She seemed to be asleep... with someone else beside her. It didn't take long for him to realize who it was.
'Kazuto...' Until today, he had not known of Kazuto's true relationship with Asuna... It was at that moment, he remembered seeing Kazuto two days ago when he introduced Nobuyuki to him. He also remembered Nobuyuki mentioned details for their 'Arranged Marriage' in front of the boy. And the shock of seeing Asuna again of livestream was compounded with her declaring Kazuto/Kirito not just her true love, but her husband.
It was then he felt a pit growing in his stomach. It wasn't a feeling of dread, but guilt. If only he had seen Nobuyuki's true side, if only he'd knew about his daughter's relationship with Kazuto... Shouzou realized that in suppressing his telepathy as part of him and Kyouko leading normal human lives, he let his discernment of other people and their intentions lapse by the wayside.
'I ended up hurting an innocent boy, and allowed my daughter to be molested...' He thought.
'Kyouko...' He then started focusing his telepathy to locate his wife. While he saw the explosion that would have killed her and Sada, something told him otherwise... He thought he felt her presence in the wake of the explosion. True enough... he felt that same presence, tired but very much alive. She was back at the Yuuki manor. He also sensed a large presence of people gathered around the manor.
He sensed a lot of people wanting answers. So it's no doubt they're the news reporters and press. It was shameful... Especially since she had to be escorted to the house by the police.
He focused his thoughts. It was then he sensed the presence of his son in the city.
'Kouichirou? What are you...' He quickly realized he's staying at one of the hotels within the city. 'How did he get back here so quickly?'
His sudden appearance was a shock to him. But he'll ask him questions when he gets the chance to see him...
Camp Zama:
Colonel Steve Rogers' Room.
"What a night..." Rogers muttered as he finishes refreshing up. But it was not the end just yet. He was due to receive a secure call from the President in five minutes. So he sit down in his desk chair and turns on the laptop. The Anderson Tech logo displayed on the screen followed with the jingle. It didn't take long before he logged into the laptop. A few minutes later, the computer phone rang with a priority message from the President of the United States. Rogers answers it and the image of Bruce Wilson appeared on the screen.
"Mr. President, sir."
"Colonel Rogers.." Wilson replied. "You're probably aware of what has been going on..."
"Yes sir, I have..." Rogers responded.
"And despite that the mission was a success. Your presence in Japan has caused an uproar in the media." He continued. "Though in all honesty, you can help explain to me why I had to start my morning in Washington explaining to the American people and the world why our elite Howler Platoon was in Japan on a mission that I did not officially authorize."
"After the hostages were rescued... According to the Yuuki girl, she told us that someone has leaked information regarding our mission..." Rogers explained.
"A mole?" President Wilson asked.
"Precisely.." Rogers confirmed. "It may sound like a stretch. But Miss Yuuki stated that the mole is coming from within the White House."
The President seemed perturbed at that.
"She's managed to get deep within Hydra and has learned what Nobuyuki's planning to do. However, they're unable to locate the mole, let alone learned the name... But she received information on both Captain Burke and Lieutenant Preston..."
"Ugh... that is very bad," President Wilson was dismayed.
"It's best that if we're gonna find out the mole, we must do it discreetly." Rogers suggested.
"I will have the Secret Service sweep the mansion and Pentagon as soon as this call is over..."
"Alright then. We're still mopping up the mess at RECT." Rogers then reported. "However, most of the data was wiped clean while the rest was corrupted. It may take some time to crack into the harddrive files..."
"And Nobuyuki is in custody, you said?" Wilson asked.
"Yes... Seijirou Kikuoka, head of the Virtual Division deputized us and we both have Nobuyuki in custody.." Rogers answered. "I'm sorry if this is-"
"I heard about that little tidbit from Nick Fury, Rogers," Wilson interrupted...
"You have? Well, that's good to hear..." Rogers said.
"If I must be honest, I was not too hot about the director contacting Mr. Kikuoka, but I can understand given what you stumbled on."
"It was a shock for me as well, sir..." Rogers added. "To think Hydra survived the 2014 uprising..."
"What am I talking about," Rogers caught himself, "of course it is never that easy..."
"And the civvies that assisted you in the mission... They never knew about your mission beforehand?" Wilson asked.
"No sir. They started a mission of their own out of concern to the 300 survivors..." Rogers answered. "Mainly one of the 300 survivors that is..."
"I see.."
"Two of my officers stumbled across them during the mission... They also helped us speed up the mission together and made our way to the World Tree..."
"Captain America and Iron Man, I presume..."
"Correct,"
The president then looked at one of the files. "Captain Chris Burke..."
"That's him, sir."
"Top military graduate, Texas war hero, and now a leader of the 7th Platoon," Wilson scrutinized, "but yet with a surprising connection to the SAO Incident."
"Is that so?" Rogers asked.
"I got this forwarded to me from Intelligence," Wilson indicated as he continued.
"Anyone related to Burke and SAO?" Rogers asked.
"Why... his brother," Wilson replied.
"So, his brother was trapped and died in SAO?" Rogers wondered. 'That probably explained his edginess with VR...'
Wilson did a double-take. "You're his superior officer and you did not know this?"
"Well, both Lieutenant Preston and Captain Anderson noticed his behavior when he logged off from the ALO server.." Rogers explained.
"How so?"
"They observed that he showing signs of suppressed PTSD."
"And do you suppose that this affected his performance and the outcome of this mission, interacting with SAO Survivors?" The President narrowed in on Burke's profile.
"Not from what I could tell.." Rogers replied. "With all due respect, Mr. President, what are you getting at?"
"I feel that he let his personal affairs get in the way of his mission of capturing Nobuyuki.." Wilson concluded. "And based on the mission recordings sent to my office from Fury, I see reasons why the op turned out the way it did, at least four centered around Burke alone," the President held up four fingers.
"Go on..." Rogers urged.
"One... he made unsanctioned contact with a civilian party and disclosed sensitive personal and operational details... Two... Failed to disclose potential conflicts of interest in regards to not only the target... but also the same parties related to his brother being a deceased victim in the prior incident... Three... engaging in hostilities with civilian gamers unprovoked... ... Assaulting them with brute force and heavy weaponry and drawing attention to himself and his subordinate."
"And four... Endangering civilians and his fellow soldiers in the course of the actions he took."
After Wilson finished, it was then Rogers asked. "So... What do you suggest for me to do?"
"That will be up to you..." Wilson replied. "Also, as for Thomas Anderson... Can't touch him because he's rich. Plus, he and his company is the number one supplier for both the US armed forces and the restoration of America... However... I can't insulate him from whatever repercussions the backlash the American people and Congress may express for him personally."
"I'm sure that Anderson will look out for himself..." Rogers said. "After all, he is one of the people who stood up against the Sokovia Accords after I went into hiding. As I recall, Anderson rose up to become popular after the old government assassinated both his father and Campbell.." He recall watching the news of both the 2016 presidential campaign for John Henry Campbell and Thomas Anderson's rose in open defiance of the Sokovia Accords.
"I bet he will... as for Captain Burke, especially that he now bears the mantle of Captain America, will have to answer for himself. I will let you all get some rest now, but as soon as Captain Burke is awake and presentable, you will have him ready for a special debriefing with me."
"I'll notify him when he does..." Rogers replied.
"It will be his chance to explain what he did and why. Some of the Army JAGs are already debating the technicalities of his possible violations, and I'd like to give this war hero a chance to defend himself." Wilson said.
"He'll make his statement when the time comes..." Rogers nodded before asking. "Anything else to disclose, sir?"
"There is Congress," Wilson continued...
"Okay, let's hear it.." Rogers waited. He knew that Congress, along with the rest of the US government is continuing to rebuild itself from the ground up. Even the two-party system has replaced its old political parties.
"You and your officers are going to be asked to testify via teleconference about Operation Finalizer..."
"I understand, sir."
"I hope you have a good alibi prepared within the next day or so. Expect a subpoena within that time."
"We will, sir."
"Then, good night over there, Colonel."
"And hope you have a good morning over there too, Mr. President.."
And with that, the connection ended and Rogers closed the laptop. He slumped back into the desk chair and sighed.
"Quite a pickle here.." He muttered to himself. "..And I thought the situation with the Accords were bad..."
Kirigaya Residence:
Hours have passed since everyone went to bed. The household was all quiet...
However, in Suguha's bedroom. The female Kirigaya started to stir in her sleep. She made herself comfortable resting against Alex as much as she could. As well as keeping in mind of his injury.
"No..." She muttered in her sleep. "No..." She began to squirm.
"No..."
Alex, who was sleeping, started to wake up. His eyes groggy as he looked around. Then he felt movement next to him. Suguha was crying and breathing heavily.
"Suguha?" Alex was fully awake and sees Suguha in distress, but her eyes remained close. He places his hand on her shoulder and shook her gently. "Suguha?"
"Help me... Please... Help..."
"Suguha?" Alex then shook Suguha.
Suguha gasped as her eyes flew open. She was breathing heavily and sweating. Her eyes darted around her bedroom, checking her surroundings.
"Sugu?" Alex ask in concern.
"Alex?" Suguha looked to her boyfriend.
For a moment, there was silence. It was then Alex asked. "You okay? You were stirring in your sleep.."
Suguha teared up. And then she threw herself in Alex's embrace. "Sugu?"
"It was horrible!" She sobbed into his shoulder. "Horrible!"
"What happen?" Alex asked while cradling his girlfriend.
"I-I was b-back in the V-Void.." She stammered between sobs. "H-He had me c-chained up like before.." Suguha sobbed. "I was all alone!"
"Sshhhhhh... It's okay..." Alex cooed as he held Suguha with tender care. The female Kirigaya girl shook as she sobbed while clutching onto Alex.
"He's not going to hurt you like that again," Alex told Suguha. Tears started to well in his eyes. "That monster's already beaten... And he'll face punishment for his actions.."
Suguha sniffled as she stared into Alex's eyes.
"I feel like I failed to protect you..." Alex stammered, holding back his own tears.
Suguha hugged him back. Tears started to spill from his eyes. "I'm sorry, Sugu. I'm so sorry.." He started to sob while clutching onto Suguha.
Suguha pressed herself against Alex as she hummed with warmth. Tears continued to stream down his face.
"But we're here now..." he managed. "..A-And I'll become strong for you... For us..."
Suguha was still crying, but she managed to smile.
"I'll be your knight in shining armor like you envisioned..." He continued.
"Alex..."
"Suguha?"
"You are my knight in shining armor..." She managed to say. She stroked his cheek. "And you're always will be strong for me..."
Kazuto's bedroom:
When Kazuto heard groaning, he almost expected Asuna to be having nightmares, but when he opened his eyes, he was surprised to see Asuna smiling. She was curled up lovely against his chest, all snug and comfy.
"We did... did it..." she moaned...
Kazuto smiled in relief to see his wife still asleep. He strokes her hair gently, feeling the smooth silkiness of her long, hazelnut hair.
"He's... no...nothing to... worry..."
"Asuna..." Kazuto sighed softly, but happily. "I wonder what you are dreaming about..."
"Kirito... we... we'll beat him..."
Kazuto's eyes widened as he realized what Asuna was dreaming?
"We... We will win, Kirito..."
"We've already won, honey," Kazuto grinned.
"Mmmmmm..." Asuna nuzzled into Kazuto's shirt cutely. She slowly opened her eyes. She stirred for a moment as she adjusted herself until her gaze met Kazuto's eyes. Her hazelnut eyes shined beautifully in the moonlight.
"Tell me what you were dreaming," Kazuto purred.
"Mmmmmm... I dreamt I was back in the void... All chained up..." Asuna began. A hint of sadness and fear was in her tone. "But.." She continued, her tone changed. "I managed to free myself and helped you up... And we've beaten Nobuyuki together..." She smiled.
"I love that..." Kazuto grinned, "anything else?"
"We managed to turn him into dust and we embraced. Like we did back in SAO..." Asuna added.
She then blushed. "A-And then we made love. Just like when we married in SAO..."
Kazuto blushed. He then smiled and kissed her forehead. Asuna coos from the feeling of his soft lips touching her forehead. She then crawled up and plants a sweet kiss against him.
Suguha's bedroom:
Alex held Suguha tight, but gentle. The nightmare still left her shaken, but she's calmed down. Alex stroked Sugu's short black hair. Sugu cooed when his fingers brushed against her soft ears.
"They may not be elf ears," He whispered.. "But they're still soft..."
Suguha blushed from his statement.
As they lay on the bed holding each other, something struck Alex's mind. As he woke up, he didn't felt the pain in his right shoulder. He was too concern of Sugu's nightmare, he didn't noticed it.
"You're so warm..." Sugu told Alex.
"T-Thanks, Sugu.." Alex thanked her.
Sugu then remembered Alex's fire power. It was warmer than expected. But it was toasty for a cold, January night. "Alex? Do you remember your... powers?" Suguha asked.
"I do..." Alex nodded before asking. "Why you ask?"
Suguha blushed slightly. "Can... can I see it?" She asked, "could you... show me?"
"Sure... As long as I don't set the bed on fire.." He joked, followed with a chuckle. He focused on his finger... After a couple of minutes, his finger started to glow red. A gentle flame actually lit from the tip. It displayed as if he was holding a candlestick.
Suguha's eyes widened in wonder as there was a gentle light between them. "Wow..." Sugu said in amazement.
Alex smiled as Suguha watched on. "If we went camping in the real world... We wouldn't have to worry about setting up the campfire.." He chuckled.
Sugu giggled before adding. "Also, you're very toasty. I can snuggled up against you in the winter." Suguha then hugged Alex and snuggled him like a body pillow to his deep red blushing.
"Mmmmmm..." Sugu hummed with delight...
"Sugu..." Alex was blushing as Sugu pressed into him. He then felt the warmth growing in his heart and he wraps his arms around him. Pulling her closer.
Their legs entwined with one another as they cuddled and snuggled. Suguha then leaned in and kissed Alex.
"Mmmmm..." Alex hummed as he felt Sugu's soft lips kissed him tenderly. It was a hard road for Kazuto and Asuna. However, in spite of everything, they've rescued Asuna and the 299 players. And managed to defeat the Hydra leader in both ALO and in the Real World. Though both Asuna and Suguha suffered a traumatic experience as Nobuyuki molested them. But in the end, he will pay for the atrocities he committed in the eyes of the public. And for Alex, he found love while exploring in Alfheim Online and he'll cherish every single second with her.
"I love you, Suguha..." Alex moaned as the two teens parted lips.
"I love you too, Alex.." Suguha sighed. She yawned cutely and nuzzled her head against Alex's neck. Suguha fell asleep, cuddling against her beloved. Alex remained awake and held her. Watching for any signs of further distress. After a few minutes, he felt sleep take over, and he soon dozed off.
January 23rd, 7:00 am JST:
Asuna stirred herself awake, her eyes slowly scanned Kazuto's bedroom. She can't believe that she just woke up from the NerveGear last night... And now, she wakes up in her husband's arms. Asuna heard the faint snoring of her beloved.
'Kazuto's such a sleepyhead...' Asuna thought. Recollecting the times she caught Kazuto napping whenever if it's in town inns or in the middle of a grassy field. She smiled at the memories.
'I wonder if Midori's awake?' She thought. Deciding to check on her, Asuna slowly slithered out of Kazuto's embrace. He was still asleep as she stood up from the bed. The Yuuki girl smiled before kissing her beloved on the forehead. She slowly made her way to the bedroom door and slid it open. She peaked into the hallway to see that it's still silent... That was until she saw the bedroom door of Kazuto's parents slide open too and she saw Midori in her nightgown stepping out of the bedroom.
"Oh!" Midori realized Asuna was right in front of her.
"Morning, Mrs. Kirigaya.." Asuna greeted her softly.
"Asuna..." Midori smiled apologetically, "sorry about my morning decorum."
"It's alright.." Asuna smiled in reassurance. "Were you about to make breakfast?"
"Yes," Midori beamed.
"Okay, mind if I help?" Asuna asked.
"Not at all..."
"Thanks..." Asuna slowly steps out of Kazuto's bedroom and closes the door before following Midori downstairs and into the kitchen.
Some time later...
"Wow Asuna..." Midori was surprised. "You really are amazing at cooking..."
"Thanks..." Asuna's cheeks went pink... "Maybe later, we can prepare lunch as well. Kazuto loves the sandwiches I've made while in SAO..."
"I guess the VR game has taught you a few things..." Midori beamed. Both she and Asuna started setting up the dining room table.
Kazuto meanwhile began to stir.
"Mmmmmm..." Kazuto groaned as he stretched his arms. He felt the bed creek as someone sat next to him. He looked up to see Asuna gazing down at him.
"Morning, Kazuto-kun..." Asuna said in a honeyed voice.
"Mm... Asuna..." Kazuto grinned. The morning sunlight shone over Asuna, displaying her beauty in the morning. Her chestnut hair shone like bronze, with her skin a smooth alabaster.
Kazuto sat up from the bed. "Were you up early?" He asks her.
Asuna gave Kazuto a nod. "I came back to wake you for breakfast."
"You made breakfast?"
Asuna hummed pleasantly. "I've helped your mother with breakfast.." She cooed.
Kazuto chuckled as he rose. He plants a kiss on Asuna's cheek.
"I love you..."
"I love you too, my Black Swordsman..." Asuna kissed Kazuto's cheek.
Kazuto grinned as he stroke Asuna's face. "Now let's see what delights you whipped up this morning."
"You'll love it, Kazuto.." Asuna giggled. "And your family will love it too.." She lifts Kazuto onto his feet and guides him out of the bedroom.
Camp Zuma:
Chris Burke and Steve Rogers walked out into the middle of the street between the different barracks and hastily erected tents housing the large number of their sleeping troops from the night before. Those who had to sleep inside the tents fortunately had heating blankets issued for the cold January night. Sadly, their sleep was about to be ended...
"You ready, Captain?" Steve asked Chris.
Chris just nodded back, and put the bugle to his lips. With his mighty lungs, he began to blow to the tune of 'First Call'. The morning tune echoed throughout the barracks.
They see Jack Preston stepping out of his tent after hearing the bugle. He stretched his limbs before he sees them and started approaching them.
"Colonel.. Captain.." Preston saluted.
While still blowing, Chris gave Preston a warning look to remind him. Realizing his blunder, Preston's eyes widened as he yelled back into the tent. "Everyone, morning formation!"
Logan, Walker, and Pierson were also heard blowing their bugles to arouse their own companies. Groans and the thud of bodies and feet were heard as many got off their cots. While there were grumbles from some of the Howler soldiers, they all stepped out of their tents and stood in formation before Colonel Rogers and Captain Burke.
Captain Burke saluted his company. "At ease!"
"Now..." Colonel Rogers began. "Despite the mission being a success, our presence has been compromised and became known to the public in both Japan and America... As of this moment, we are still suspended from combat operations."
"Also..." He continued. "We have to start our debriefing to the higher ups and the governments... However, that does not change the fact that we are still on alert. As elite soldiers of the United States Army Rangers, you will continue to train and maintain readiness with your respective company and fireteam leaders until such a time that we are called back into combat service."
Everyone remained silent in formation as Rogers continued.
"Keep your bodies and weapons well maintained and your minds sharp, Howlers. Otherwise, fair morning to all of you! Captains, attend to your companies."
"Company, dismissed!" Captain Burke told 7-1. Everyone breaks formation and went about their tasks. Only Preston remained.
"So what's the score, Captain?"
"You and I have been summoned," Chris said, "the big man wants to talk to us."
"Alright, let's get to it..." Preston replied as he followed by Rogers and Burke.
With the Kirigayas:
Kazuto was amazed to see what his wife and mother have made.
"Wow, Asuna... This looks amazing..." He sees dishes that have Tamago Kake Gohan and Ogura Toast. He could see hints of Asuna's personal touches to his mother's special dishes.
"Asuna helped me with the dishes.." Midori chimed. "Your father was right, Kazuto-kun, Asuna-chan has those magical hands!"
Kazuto blushes. "Speaking of father. Is he still asleep?"
"He is..." Midori replied. "And so is Suguha and Alex-kun.."
Suguha's room:
Suguha and Alex were still curled up with each other. Alex woke up and smiled at Sugu's drooling face. She was still snug in Alex's embrace. He almost did not want to wake her. But everyone will be waking up for breakfast, so...
"Sugu..." Alex said softly.
"Uhhh," Suguha moaned.
"It's morning..." He cooed. This time, stroking her cheek.
Suguha opened her eyes.
"Good morning, my beautiful Sylph..." Alex chuckles.
"Morning-" Suguha felt the wetness from her drooling.
"I can see that you've slept well.." He continued. Suguha blushed as she wiped the drool away. Alex hears some activity coming from downstairs..
"Sounds like breakfast's being set up.." Alex deduced.
Suguha rose up. "Best not to keep them waiting..." She said while stretching her arms. Alex rose up from the bed shortly afterwards. He gives Suguha a peck on the lips. The two stepped out into the hallway when Sugu's dad came out.
"Morning, dad." Sugu chimed.
"Good morning, Suguha," Minetaka greeted with a questioning stare towards Alex.
"Morning, Mr. Kirigaya..." Alex greeted nervously.
"So you both had an uneventful sleep?" Minetaka asked.
"We did, dad..." Sugu answered with a smile.
"Good," that seemed to satisfy Minetaka, "because I don't like funny business in the night."
Alex felt daggers being pointed at him when Minetaka stared at him. The man being a former police veteran with fighting experience made him even more intimidating.
"L-Let's check on the others..." Alex said. Breaking the awkward silence.
"Good morning, darlings," Midori chimed.
"Morning, mom." Sugu chirped.
"Morning, Suguha," Asuna beamed.
"Morning, sis'." Suguha chimed before hugging her sister-in-law. Kazuto and Alex blushed slightly at the cuteness. Even Minetaka and Midori watched on in amusement.
"I hope you like what's in store this morning," Asuna giggled.
Suguha glanced at the dishes displayed on the table. "Oh... You made all this?" She recognized the dishes her mother sometimes cooks with some embellishments.
"Asuna was kind to help me, Sugu..." Midori beamed.
Suguha saw some fish flakes and seasoning on the Gohan, and some fruit bits in the Ogura Toast. "That's new..."
"I've made some touches of my own..." Asuna smiled. "Something I've learned while in SAO..."
"And the presentation," Midori gushed.
Minetaka smirked. "Let's see how all this taste..."
Everyone sat down.
"Mind if say Grace again?" Alex asked.
Kazuto and Minetaka smiled approvingly.
"Go ahead, Alex-kun..." Midori smiled with approval. Everyone bowed their heads and held hands as Alex began.
Camp Zama:
"Commence fire!" Ramirez called out. The soldiers in front of him fired off their M17 handguns. The dummy targets that stood several feet away are riddled with bullets. The indoor firing range was made available for the Howlers to practice their shooting, and they intended to stay at the top of the game.
The Howlers reloaded and fired again. The door suddenly opened, and Ramirez turned to see Damion waving hello. "Private?"
"Hey, Sarge.." Damion smiled.
"Aren't you supposed to be recovering in Medical?" Ramirez raised an eyebrow.
"I was discharged after making a full recovery.." Damion answered. "Remember the shot that red armored-clad figure gave me?"
"You mean Wade..."
"Yep. It completely sealed up the wound and I was given a blood transfusion. And the next morning, my health was in peak condition. As if I healed overnight..."
"In fact... I feel like a billion bucks..."
Ramirez chuckled at Damion's enthusiasm. "Good to hear, Private..." He smiled. "Well now that you are a billion bucks, I say you put your mouth where the money is."
Damion just laughed at his sergeant's response.
In the briefing room:
"We're online Mr. President, good connection."
"Good.." President Wilson nodded. "Now let's begin..."
"Captain Chris Burke and Lieutenant Jack Preston, reporting as ordered, Mr. President," Chris said.
"As you are aware that Colonel Rogers was already been debriefed last night in Japanese Standard Time.." Wilson reminded.
"Yes sir," Chris acknowledged as he stood at attention with his lieutenant.
The President nodded. "Now, let's get the debriefing started... First off, I want you to know how I've had to spend the whole day defending you and your fellow soldiers here in Washington."
"We're aware of that, sir.." Preston acknowledged.
"Thank you, sir," Chris simply said.
"Despite your completing your mission in ALO freeing the captives and capturing Nobuyuki however, there are still many questions surrounding your actions that may have led to this strenuous situation we are in now." Wilson looked particularly to Captain Burke.
"Sir?" Chris asked.
"This was suppose to be a secret covert mission to locate and extract a war criminal that evaded justice after the civil war... However, your presence was exposed and became known to the public in Japan. Which caused an uproar in both in Japan and America..." Wilson then looked to his file, "on top of that... 48 Rangers confirmed dead, and hundreds of soldiers and civilians injured with ghost pain from the incident in VR."
Both Burke and Preston remained silent as Wilson continued.
"I don't know what you two were doing or thinking... So, start explaining what really happen in there..."
"Mr. President," Chris began, "it all began when the lieutenant and I encountered a group of civilians we later found out to be survivors of Sword Art Online. Two players, called Kirito and Lexar began their own rescue mission after learning about one of the 300 survivors trapped in the NerveGear helmets two months after SAO was cleared."
"I attempted to keep them at arms length to protect civilian life and to keep the operation under wraps. However, we kept running into them a few times..."
"Running into them?" The president asked.
"Yes sir," Burke answered.
Preston felt bad for his captain and spoke up. "It was my fault, sir."
Wilson attention turned to Preston. "Do explain, Lieutenant.."
Preston cleared his throat and began. "Okay, we were in the city of Swilvane, which is located within Sylph Territory. It's one of the nine fairy races in-game. We... Well, I interfered the scuffle that was taking place in a tavern between the Sylph players and the Spriggan players. The latter were Kirito and company..."
"I asked the offenders to back away... And they did... That was until the next day when I was carried off to the Wind Towers. I saw them again with the same offenders..."
"And what happened?"
"The offender behaved in a threaten matter, and starting attacking. Captain Burke and I ended up fighting them..."
"Captain Burke?" Wilson asked.
"It is true," Chris admitted, "a group of overzealous gamers made aggressive advances as I was trying to retrieve Lieutenant Preston from a crowd."
"Which is why we ended up teaming up with the SAO survivors from thereon..." Preston added.
"I see... and Captain Burke..."
Chris prepared for the next question. He begins to speak.
"Any particular reason why you would have failed to disclose your connection to these survivors?"
"I'm sorry, sir?" Chris asked.
"That you've disclosed sensitive personal and operational details to civvie players... And the fact that your late brother was apparently in contact with such people."
Chris felt his heart stop by the mentioned of his late brother.
But he answered nonetheless. "The SAO survivors mistook me for my twin brother due to my avatar sharing his tag name and physical characteristics."
"Is that so?" Wilson raised an eyebrow upon hearing this. "And when they mentioned your late brother. How did you react?"
"If we are being honest with each other, Mr. President," Chris answered, "I was surprised that I would ever encounter anyone who personally knew Taylor from then."
"And you didn't say anything that gave yourself away?" Wilson asked.
"That's correct, Mr. President.." Chris replied. "However, because they did recognize me as Taylor's twin, they put two and two together with the aid of one Alex Mitchell."
"And this Alex Mitchell is one of the SAO survivors..." Wilson looked at the file again. "His father and brother are in the US Navy stationed in Japan, and were kidnapped along with Shouzou Yuuki. Correct?"
"Yes sir, according to Fury's intelligence sources," Chris answered. "And then, their friends found us and we were forced to reveal our mission.."
"I see..." Wilson leaned forward.
"And we had to head through the Legrue Corridor to escape the hostile players. And that's when things got complicated..."
"Complicated how?" Wilson asked.
"Well... The hostile players found us outside the city of Legrue and tried to corner us..." Chris explained. "And that's when we were forced to reveal ourselves as Army Rangers and fought back..."
"The... bounty hunters that you mentioned obstructed your progress?"
"That's correct, sir.."
Wilson remained silent, processing what he had heard. Then, he spoke. "And from the report, Nobuyuki became aware of your presence and launched the Industrial Revolution update to cover what has happened from the others..."
"Hydra had an agent hidden among the civilians, Mr. President," Chris answered, "he was specifically after both me and the one known as Kirito."
"I see..."
"The situation had been dire, and I was not about to let our mission progress be lost because of over-zealous civilians manipulated into thinking it was all a special game event," Chris justified. "And we tried to avoid the skirmish in Alne after the update was made. But Rollins tried to shoot Colonel Rogers and the whole thing went out the window.."
"Hence why you fired all of a sudden," Wilson surmised.
"Exactly," Chris affirmed. "That was until the Yuuki girl managed to hijack the communications room and broadcast the truth."
"I already know that..." Wilson sighed as he looked over the rest of the file. "And of course, the civvie players joined in the battle after the broadcast was made. Anything else to add?"
"If I may, Mr. President," Chris added, "we may have stumbled on something far bigger than Intelligence let on."
"And neither you, nor your superior were aware that Nobuyuki's the leader of the resurrected Hydra?" Wilson asked.
"That's correct, sir.." Chris answered.
It was then that Preston spoke up. "Permission to speak freely, Mr. President..."
"Go ahead, Lieutenant.."
"Up until then, we only knew that he was a war criminal from the Second Civil War..." He said. "It came to a shock to all of us that he rebuilt Hydra while we were fighting against each other."
"Go on..."
"And if what the Yuuki said was true... We could be facing a new enemy that will try to take over the world a third time..."
Silence filled the line. Chris glanced back at Preston, then back at Wilson.
Then, the President spoke. "Lieutenant Jack Preston, I completely understand what you've said in your statement..."
"Captain Burke, while I cannot entirely agree with how you handled this situation in the field," the President added, "I also cannot fault you for helping to expose a Hydra subversion that would have been catastrophic."
Chris said nothing, but nodded. Preston remained silent as well.
"However, because you do have a personal connection to the SAO and now the ALO Incidents, Captain...It almost jeopardize the mission to capture Nobuyuki undetected..."
Chris kept his composure, but now knew that he was caught.
"Even though that the mission was a success as I'd said this before. It had caused an incident that would've ended in a complete failure..."
Preston's jaw dropped at what the President was saying. "Mr. President!" Preston knew that Chris wanted to spearhead the whole mission. But to be accused of jeopardizing the whole mission?
"Lieutenant?" Wilson raised an eyebrow. "Do you wish to make another statement?"
Preston was about to protest when Chris raised his hand. "I accept full responsibility for the operation and the unexpected complications. I am prepared for whatever discipline I may face from my command."
"Captain..." Preston gasped. A tense silence followed between the successor to the mantle of America's Captain and the American President.
At last, the President spoke. "Very well then. I will discuss this further with your superior officer, Captain... Anything else?"
Captain shook his head. "None sir," he replied, averting his gaze slightly down.
"Good..." Wilson replied.
"Wait-" Preston was about to interrupt, but Burke would not let him.
"I will remain on standby, pending further action, Mr. President."
"Alright then... I'll notify your superior officer and we'll discuss the discipline..." Wilson added. "You're dismissed." The video feed was cut, ending the debriefing...
Preston spun around. "Captain! With all due respect, Captain.. But why take the blame!?"
"Because you are my operational responsibility, Lieutenant," Chris answered in a tone more mature than his youthful appearance could portray. "I was responsible for your actions and safety during the mission, and that of the other soldiers."
"But I should be taking the blame too! I got myself in trouble with the hostile players!" Preston protested.
"And I failed to mitigate the risk and situation," Chris responded. He then glanced towards Preston. "Please look after 7-1 for the time being." The Captain turned around, and was led out by escorts.
"Captain!" Preston protested again. But it was no use. She sunk back into his chair and hung his head down in shame. Somehow, he felt that he was responsible for his captain's predicament.
Kirigaya residence:
Kazuto, Asuna, Alex, and Suguha watched the coverage of recorded address by President Bruce Wilson during the late morning in America. Medias in both in America and Japan are in an uproar. While one news reported the unofficial involvement of the Howler platoon in Japan. The other reported a huge crowd protesting RECT in the wake of the incident. However, the four paid the most attention to the president's prior remarks.
"It's not looking good." Alex shook his head in disapproval.
"The presence of the Howler platoon in Japan has sparked concern in both Japan and America.." Wilson stated. "However... I also wish to remind everyone that it was thanks to these brave American soldiers... Because they have discovered evidence that Hydra has once again, risen out of the shadows since the failed uprising back in 2014.. While it is regrettable that this has become a source of tension with Japan... But let me ask you this question... What if Nobuyuki have succeeded with his plan?
Kazuto and Asuna held to each other. Alex held onto Suguha who clung onto him.
"What if the plot the described by the hostage, Asuna Yuuki, had gone international with the launch of this VR game? How many people would Hydra brainwash with the game? And how long would we last before every nation crumbled?" He continued. "While I have no intention of violating an allied nation's sovereignty... But it could've been worse if the Howlers didn't intervene... We are faced with a revived Hydra threat that was on the verge of hyperinflating its numbers across the globe with high-tech brainwashing technology."
Kazuto held Asuna closer to him. The thought of being close of losing her was a painful memory.
"And I believe that I express the concerns of many of my counterparts in Japan and other nations in saying that a Japanese domestic hostage affair of three hundred innocent players could very well have become a hostage situation of millions internationally. And for that, we should be thankful for the Howler Platoon for helping to expose the truth about Alfheim Online and Hydra's intentions with the VR game... And many thanks to Japan's brave volunteer citizens who rose to the occasion to free the hostages and shut down Hydra's plot. This also includes survivors of the Sword Art Online death game..."
Alex was stunned. So was both Kazuto and Asuna.
"Who, despite probable trauma and recovering over two months from their two-year ordeal, aided our elite American special operations in confronting a war criminal and leader of the most subversive terrorist threat since the days of World War II and the Cold War. So... As president of the United States of America, I give out my thanks to these brave individuals from overseas..." Wilson continued. "And I sincerely hope that this ugly, unexpected incident may draw Japan and the United States closer together in countering a common enemy. And when the time comes, we will be prepared..."
"Who would have thought that we'd receive a vote of confidence from the American president?" Suguha remarked.
"If I recall, he was a running mate for John Henry Campbell back in 2016..." Alex concluded.
"Really?" Suguha asked.
"Yep, like Campbell and Anderson, Wilson also opposed the Sokovia Accords in that year." Alex explained.
"Didn't he just win a re-election?" Kazuto asked.
"He did..." Alex answered. "But, after Anderson and Rogers lead a coup against the old US government. Bruce Wilson was installed into office after Matthew Ellis resigned in disgrace for allowing the nation to become unstable..."
"What is it now? His second or third term?" Asuna wondered.
"I believe this is his second term." Alex explained. "If I recall, the civil war lasted until early-2020.. The war started on June, 2018 and lasted until March, 2020... So officially, he wasn't sworn into office until right after the war... He took charge when the whole Ellis Administration collapsed. And the old US government killed off the entire line of succession below Ellis while, at the same time, blamed their deaths on the Inhumans in order to promote the Accords..."
"Ellis himself nearly lost his life when the last surviving member of his own cabinet tried to assassinate him to take control. It was funny that the Avengers, or remnants of the Avengers, led by Anderson and Rogers, raided the White House just as the assassination attempt was made.."
"And that's why Ellis resigned?" Sugu asked.
"Correct... Truth to be told, he didn't want the Accords to become law..." Alex said. "But he was pressured by Glenn Milley, Thaddeus Ross, and half of the public who supported the Accords..."
Alex rubbed his head, "the whole affair threw the whole country in disarray. It also caused Thomas Anderson, head CEO of Anderson Tech Industries, to prepare for the upcoming storm that he saw over the horizon... He managed to expand the American militia through Anderson Tech up to mid-2018..."
"Who was Wilson before he became the president?" Asuna pointed to Wilson on the screen as he withdrew towards the White House. "Where does he come in?"
"He used to be in the Armed Forces..." Alex answered. "A navy officer. Just like Campbell was... He was sworn in as Ellis' emergency Vice President after the assassination left him weak. After the coup, Both Anderson and Wilson practically purged most of the US government..."
"You mean, with reforms?" Kazuto asked..
"No, I mean purges. When Stalin became leader of the USSR, he either shot or imprisoned his best military commanders. The old US government went through a lot of changes in the wake of it all.."
"Wow..." Sugu gasped...
"It was simply too dangerous to keep many of the previous leaders around," Alex explained, "especially when some of them directly masterminded the plots to usurp the government when separatist factions seized control of their regions."
"And now he's fighting for his political life with this new development," Kazuto said as he watched the news coverage of the reactions to Wilson's address.
"I wouldn't worry too much.." Alex observed. "Knowing the new Government... No... Knowing Anderson. He'll find a way to turn the whole thing around and convince everyone that it was the right thing to do..."
Asuna hugged her husband. "I'm worried, Kazuto..." She said. "It feels like we are going through what the Americans went through."
"I know, Asuna..." Kazuto held his wife. "But we've gone through challenges before..."
Suguha also seemed apprehensive too. Alex sensed this and hugged his girlfriend.
"Hey, here comes the Prime Minister's conference," Kazuto noticed.
"We now take you live to Prime Minister Sotoshi Ishagura's reaction to the American President's remarks and the ALO Incident."
"Let's hope that Ishagura's in the same boat against Hydra.." Alex remarked as the camera switched to the Japanese PM.
"I would like to thank the American President Wilson for his statement regarding the whole incident.." Ishagura spoke. "Even though the Howler's presence in Japan showed a breach between the two countries.."
"But..." He continued. "The news of Hydra resurrected in Japan is the most disturbing... And Asuna Yuuki's broadcast revealing the truth about Hydra's resurrection is shocking... While we're still recovering from the Sword Art Online incident that ended two months ago. And now, the incident involving Alfheim Online and RECT has occurred."
"You're a real celebrity, Asuna," Alex tried to joke.
However, Asuna didn't laugh as she tried to repress the horrible memory of being trapped in the birdcage. Kazuto hugged and comforted her while giving Alex a look saying that this was not the time. Alex, realized this, nodded in acknowledgement and sunk down sheepishly. Suguha patted him sympathetically.
"I have asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to investigate the Hydra infiltration immediately... I also asked the Virtual Division to investigate alongside to lead the investigation.. And the Ministry of Defense will be on standby given the military nature that has been revealed of this threat."
"At least that's good news.. Right?" Alex asked.
"It is..." Kazuto admitted. He'd met Kikuoka a couple of months back, days after SAO was cleared and he, along with Alex, told Kikuoka about what had happened during the two years.
Suguha curled up to Alex. "I don't know, but I really hope that Hydra thinks twice now that... creature is behind bars."
"I do too, Sugu.." Alex sighed as he held Sugu. "I do too..."
Just behind them, Minetaka looked upon his children with a solemn and resolved look, before quietly slipping away.
Roger's quarters, Camp Zama:
Steve Rogers had received word that Captain Burke was confined to his quarters to wait for discipline actions. The World War 2/Avengers veteran shook his head sadly. He knew that the possibility of the mission going sideways was inevitable. However, the outcome of it all? Rogers also heard the news about how both America and Japan has considered the return of Hydra as a international threat was good news. It relieved the bitter sweetness he'd received.
But now... he was dealing with the President and the possibility of his Captain facing the military investigators and justice system.
"And I thought the Sokovia Accords were a pain..." Rogers said to himself. His thoughts were interrupted when there was a knock on the door.
"Enter," he called.
The door opens and entered Captain Thomas Anderson.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" Anderson asked.
Rogers pursed his lips. He decided to be blunt, "Burke and I are in trouble."
"Anything else I can do to help?"
"What do you have for your report?" Colonel Rogers asked.
"Well..." Anderson pulled out a folder and took out the contents to read them. "First off... The civvie players that met us was crucial for the mission..." He laid out profiles of key players...
"Kirito."
"Lexar."
"Leafa."
"Spade."
"Mace."
"Lisbeth."
"Sleek."
"Silica."
"Rex."
"Kureha."
"Haze."
"Rain."
"Philia."
"Agil."
"Klein, Dale, Dynamm, Harry One, Issin, and Kunimittz."
"Codex."
"Strea and Yui."
"And Asuna."
"That also includes those after Asuna's broadcast. Charlie, Alias, Barris, Echo, Alicia, Sakuya, Eugene, and Sigurd." He showed their profiles with their pictures and lists of relevant actions observed by Captain America, Iron Man, the other soldiers and himself.
"Good thing I managed to add a shield on the IP addresses..." He added. Colonel Rogers picked up the file and read it quickly.
"I've also added the name of the girl Asuna contacted while in the World Tree... Naomi..." Anderson pointed out. "But didn't have the image of her printed yet..."
"Naomi Hunter... her tag name?"
"It appears so... I'm still searching up her name..."
"Where is she?" Colonel Rogers asked, "is she safe?"
"From what I could tell... She's safe. Trinity and Unity managed to locate her tag name and encrypted her IP address so that she won't be further harassments by Hydra.." Anderson answered. "Mr. Kikuoka apparently managed to locate her and put her into custody."
"Good.." Rogers replied. "Anything on these players related to the Captain that could at least soften things up for him?"
"Let's see..." Anderson thought about it for a moment. He pointed to Kirito. "He knew his twin brother, Taylor, back in SAO."
"So he already had some level of familiarity with Burke... at least his brother," Rogers realized.
"It appears so..." Anderson surmised. "It's probably why Burke's been acting strange whenever he logs off..."
Rogers cupped his chin. "The concern though is whether that affected his performance and decision-making."
"And Delta Services will help us once I turn in this report to Fury. Correct?" Anderson asked.
"That's correct." Rogers answered. "Fury will pull some strings and he'll vouch for both me and Burke."
"You know I can still help out in another way. As you recall, Anderson Tech Industries have seized control of the mainstream media after the civil war." Anderson pointed out with a reassurance grin. "The Anderson Tech News Podcast has also been broadcasting what has happened in ALO. And everyone's rallying for us. Which is great news.."
"You do of course realize that you do not want to make yourself a target for court-martial," Rogers reminded.
"I'll be operating in the shadows.." Anderson replied. "What are they gonna do if they catch me? My company has given the American Rangers an edge before the Civil War. And it's the number one company to be involved of rebuilding the nation.."
"Don't get cocky," Rogers warned...
"And besides... There's nothing to worry about as long as things go to plan..." Anderson added. "Even if I do get railroaded by the JAGs, saving you and Burke from the brig will be worth it."
"Alright then..." Rogers said. "I just hope you know what you're doing..."
"I know what I'm doing.." Anderson reassured Rogers. "Trust me... This isn't the first time that happened before..."
White House, Washington DC:
Bruce Wilson sat in the Oval Office overlooking paperwork regarding the Howler's actions in ALO... It had been a long day for him... Having to reassure the public that the actions in ALO were necessary. It wasn't easy as they're factions that preferred non-intervention policies. However, the majority of the American population, still remembering what happened back in 2014 and during the civil war, supports the actions.
Defending the honor of the Howlers however, had the cost of drawing criticism from even his own supporters over his apparent failure to control the military's actions outside the Western Hemisphere. His approval as president had slid noticeably even as most agreed that Hydra was dangerous.
However, that wasn't the only thing that concerned him. The fact that there's a mole in the White House was alarming. This mole was apparently high-ranking enough to have obtained proposals for Operation Finalizer and personal profiles of the officers involved. After the call from Colonel Rogers, he ordered the secret service to locate and apprehend the mole. Sadly, nothing seemed to turn up. He assumed that the mole found out that his cover was blown and high-tailed out before the secret service got wind.
'But neither Rogers nor Fury were able to find his name either...' Wilson realized. Whether the moles was far or near, the investigation could hit the wall anyways. He'll have to increase security within the White House. People he thought he could fully count on now had to be scrutinized more closely. It will not be easy for him to do. But, it's the only way to keep a close eye out for the mole.
Then there was the issue of Captain Burke...
Even though the mission was a success. His personal matters regarding his brother's death in Sword Art Online had exposed the Howlers' presence in Japan. While his personal performance and leadership kept Operation Finalizer from completely failing, the military investigators had become suspicious of his connections to the VR gaming scares in Japan. Therefore, he was forced to confine Captain Burke in his quarters until further notice from his superior officer.
It seemed harsh at first glance... It even caused Lieutenant Preston to protest and take blame for the mission. However, it had to be done as Captain Burke was put in charge of activities while in VR. He also had to dismiss Preston's protests as well.
For now... He'll wait for a response.
An aide suddenly came in. "Mr. President, you have General Burke and Colonel Logan present to see you."
Wilson looked up at the aide. "Logan yes... but I did not request General Burke."
"Okay, Mr. President..." The aide replied with a nod and left the office. Sometime had passed. The aide then returned.
"Colonel Logan is here, Mr. President. But General Burke has insisted that he see you. Secret Service have temporarily detained him."
Wilson sighed. "Very well, send General Burke in..."
Colonel Logan was escorted in, with General Burke behind him. Colonel Gabriel Logan, a man of fifty-one with black hair entered first. He sports a scar on the left side of his face. His military career was known during the War on Terror in the 2000s to both Al-Qaeda and the Ten Rings. Later on, he sided with the Free States in the Second American Civil War. Which he earned the battle scar. And he was placed in charge of South Korea during the Second Korean War.
General Samuel Burke was more clean-looking and a bit older into his late-fifties however. He sported a very short crew cut to his brown-blonde hair, brown eyes, and a more blocky face and build compared to his son. Nonetheless, his serious, stone face was something he shared with the younger Chris.
"Gentlemen..." Wilson greeted them as the aide closed the door behind Gabriel Logan and Sam Burke.
"Mr. President," Samuel Burke saluted, "General Burke and Colonel Logan reporting."
"At ease..." Wilson said. General Burke and Colonel Logan were seated.
"General Burke," President Wilson said, "I was told that you'd send the colonel here to present the report, but I wasn't told that you would insist on joining us."
The commander of USSOCOM just looked straight at the President. "Indeed I did," he was blunt, "I too wish to present it."
"About Operation: Finalizer..." Wilson added.
"Correct, sir..." General Burke nodded to Logan.
Logan laid down a holo-display.
"As you are aware of that the information regarding Operation: Finalizer was leaked to Hydra by a mole.." Logan spoke. "However, most of the emails that was sent to Hydra has been intercepted. But of course, they're encrypted. We managed to decrypt some of the emails. They're not much to go on, but it's all we have for the moment.."
"And anything more from either Fury or his agent, Delta One?" Wilson asked.
"They might've found the name of the mole... Or at least, the alias..." Logan answered.
General Burke grimaced, "Coriolanus."
Wilson looked to the commander questioningly.
"We believe that's the mole for Hydra or some other faction..." Logan surmised. "Howler Platoon recovered that much from the servers inside the Nobuyuki Mansion, but the fail-safes badly corrupted the files to the point that most of it may not be recoverable..."
"I see..." Wilson cupped his chin. "Anything else?"
"That's all we can get, Mr. President." Logan answered.
It was then General Burke spoke up. "It does concern me that a number of Americans were found among the enemy forces. And most of them are former Pacifican soldiers from the civil war..."
Wilson hummed... that was a subject that he would have to broach with the Japanese PM.
"They've been captured by the Howlers, and are waiting for transport back to America to stand trial... and many more six feet under when the Rangers attacked the RECT campus."
"At least that's some good news..." Wilson observed. "Though I'd like to know how they would have made it as far as Japan."
"No idea..." Logan answered. "They're many former Pacifican soldiers that fled the country when their government fell.."
"So not everyone of them surrendered or died fighting," General Burke added, "and who knows what kind of military secrets some of them may have carried off with them."
"Which is not good for everyone as they can side with anyone who wish to see America be brought to ruins..." Wilson replied.
"Though get this..." Gabriel Logan suddenly brought up more profiles... "They're those who became disillusioned of Nobuyuki's plans and took sides with one of the 300 hostages..."
"You don't say," Wilson leaned forward with a musing expression. Logan begins reading the names...
"Fuji Yamane."
"Yuki Tsutano.."
"Naomi Hunter."
"And George Connelly..."
"George Connelly is one of the Americans then," Wilson realized.
"Correct... And one of the Pacifican soldiers..." Logan brought up other dossiers, "and just one of many former Americans that Howler 7-3 found on site who had surrendered."
"I see..." Wilson said.
Wilson then remembered. "And Asuna Yuuki and the other 299 hostages? What are their current statuses and whereabouts?"
"They're logged out and are currently going through re-habitation.." Logan answered. "From what Kikuoka has reported. Asuna has made a full recovery minutes after she logged off from the NerveGear helmets."
Now Wilson was surprised. "Really? Did the report say how?" He asked.
"Not really.. According to the girl, she stated that it just happened." Logan read the dossier. "And she, along with her beloved, took on Hydra soldiers who were attempted to raid the hospital that very night..."
"Kirito, I recall," Wilson said.
"That's him... His VR name that is. His real name is Kazuto Kirigaya..." Burke explained. He tapped on the holo-display to bring up intel on Kazuto. "He crossed paths with Nobuyuki at the hospital's parking lot before things got out of hand..." He then tapped on a window... showing that it was helmet cam footage from Chris Burke aka Captain America. It showed Kazuto taking down a few Hydra soldiers before running into the hospital's entrance.
"Wait," Wilson realized, "that's Captain America's helmet camera." He looked to General Burke. "Did you know your son was there?"
However, the general showed no apparent reaction as he continued... "Kazuto showed bravery in the face of Hydra. Whenever if it was in VR or in the real world.."
"Of course, Captain America was indeed on site at the hospital to secure the area and capture Nobuyuki."
"So he made the decision to go to that hospital," Wilson mused.
"Which is impressive..." Logan commented. "I believe Captain Burke realized the danger that Hydra still posed, and rushed to the scene on his own initiative."
"And the reason Hydra attempted to raid the hospital was to stage an attempted kidnapping.."
Wilson frowned, still remembering the footage released from Japan of what was happening inside ALO when US intelligence sources had broken the media blackout in the country. The footage of Nobuyuki molesting both Asuna and the blonde-haired girl sparked outrage throughout the media. And there was even more outrage and shock from the rest of the public, especially in an America still recovering from the machinations and treachery orchestrated by Hydra.
It also attracted the attention of a group called the Society for Integrity in Marriage. It was a social advocacy group that arose in the wake of the devastation of the American population. They strongly opposed Arranged Marriage, claiming that they've strayed from royalty and served only to protect the wealth for people of their children. Allowing them to grow richer while the children suffered from marriages that were never based on love.
While advocating for increased marriages and childbirth to restore the devastated country, they also emphasized healthy relationships to restore the social fabric, and thus saw these arrangements as counterproductive to those goals. The revelation that Asuna Yuuki was accidentally arranged to a terrorist leader had added fuel to their arguments.
'Things have gone crazy since the broadcasts from ALO...' Wilson thought.
Yuuki Manor:
Kyouko had just finished a simple breakfast after a restless night of sleep. She kept the blinds on the windows closed, knowing that the news press are still camped outside. They served as an uncomfortable reminder of yesterday's ordeal.
Kyouko made her way to her office, trying to take her mind off of recent events. She switched onto the TV set, the channel was set on the news channel. A group of commentators were on as they discussed the topic everyone was calling 'Total War in Alfheim'. It went over the details and events that took place right after the 'Industrial Revolution' update was added to the Alfheim Online update.
Hana Okamoto, who's the lead commentator, went over the details. "So the game update was marketed as promotional material for Alfheim's international launch..."
"According to one of the fairy race's leaders, Charlie, stated that it was a cover-up for Hydra's sinister activity as well as to hide the truth about the skirmish that went on within the Legrue Corridor. One that we now know involved two high-ranking officers of the US Army special forces..."
'So, it's all true...' Kyouko thought. 'America was involved within this ALO game...'
"... who Salamander leader, Eugene now says were conducting a search for a war criminal inside RECT."
The image of the RECT employer picture appeared on-screen. "Sugou Nobuyuki..."
Another one of the commenters seemed incredulous. "And to think that the CEO of RECT was the infamous Barnas Shinsei..."
One of the younger commentators, a girl, seemed to be confused. "I'm sorry, but what would Nobuyuki-san have to do with the Americans?"
"Nobuyuki was involved during the Second Civil War across the Pacific back in 2018 and 2020." Hana explained. "He took services with the Pacifican government of conducting human experiments on prisoners-of-war. Both military and civilian.."
The other young woman and other commenters gasped in shock. "Is that true!?"
Hana nodded. "It's true..."
Another commenter chimed in. "If that is the case though, why not go through our Foreign Ministry to negotiate? Why do the Americans try to sneak around like that?"
"We don't really know what happened during the negotiations." Hana replied.
Kyouko was speechless... Nobuyuki was in the United States during its civil war? And he sided with the Federated States of Pacifica too? It didn't add up.
"From what took place. He conducted experiments that involved the manipulation of the human brain." She continued. "That sounds like what that Asuna girl was saying was happening to those 299 players."
"So, you're saying that Nobuyuki was continuing where he left off from the Civil War?" One of the young commentators asked.
"Apparently," Hana said, "and according to the American military reports, the early experiments he conducted in California were intrusive and painful to the point of making the victims go insane and die."
"And also," she continued, "those who have survived the process were placed on the front lines to fight the Free States... though most of them would end up still dying from stress and cognitive dissonance from an imperfect process."
Kyouko was stunned. The very man who promised to help her daughter escape from the VR prison, was a war criminal. Let alone the leader of Hydra. Then the discussion seemed to shift to Asuna, who was shown in her black Hydra outfit. The image alone send shivers down the Yuuki adult.
Hana continued, "we don't know much about Asuna Yuuki... Other than the fact that she's one of the 300 players that didn't wake up after the infamous Sword Art Online death game was cleared two months ago."
Some of the males in the audience and among the commenters seemed to whistle.
"She's a beauty.." One male commenter called out.
"Yeah, but one who can really slice you up," another girl snarked.
"Very true.." Another girl added.
Kyouko raised an eyebrow. Were they implying something vicious?
It was then Hana continue. "Even though it had been broadcasted live within ALO. This is for those who have missed the video footage.." She pressed the button and the video footage of Asuna begins to play.
Kyouko saw Asuna standing in front of the screen. Speaking into the camera and revealing the truth about Alfheim Online. The matriarch was riveted as Asuna spoke with a resolve totally unfamiliar to her. The commenters were speechless, even Kyouko. Two days ago, she heard her own daughter utter the phrase 'Hail Hydra'. Asuna went on to detail how Hydra had completely absorbed RECT and how Alfheim Online was going to be used as a vehicle for their refined Sleeper Project to recruit players around the world.
And in her speech, Asuna urged the players in ALO to rise up and fight back against the true enemy of freedom. Hydra. Even as violent banging on the door to the room was heard, she managed to close out with a smile before reaching for her gun. And she signs off before the broadcast ended.
"I didn't think that she could be that brave," one of the young men commented.
"Me neither..." Said another. "But it appears that SAO reshaped her..."
Kyouko was processing this.
As she was doing so, Hana then sighed before speaking. "This next video showed the true side of Nobuyuki..." She turned to the camera. "For those who are turning this, the next footage is extremely disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised."
The next footage shows Nobuyuki, in his King Oberon avatar, taunting Asuna, and the three other players. Stating their names as Kirito, Lexar, and Leafa, as well as deducing their real life names. Kyouko watched as he declared his dreams of Hydra's New World Order with his manipulation of human memories and emotions through technology...
And then, everyone witnessed Nobuyuki slapping chains on her and left her dangling in the air. He then does the same for Leafa and she dangled alongside Asuna. He made his advances towards the two helpless girls, caressing them while they remain in place via gravity spell. Then he stabbed Kirito with his own sword and kicked Lexar's rifle away and strung him up on a chain by jabbing an iron hook into his shoulder.
Kyouko Yuuki felt sick to her stomach as she witnessed her daughter being violated with her friends. It got even worse when Nobuyuki orders the System Command to set the Pain Absorber to level 4 and tortured Lexar by yanking him, digging the hook further into his shoulder while both Asuna and Leafa screamed at him to stop.
Then he turned his attention to the girls and taunted them about resisting his charm before he proceeded to rip their tops off. The censors blurred their exposed chests.
Kyouko diverted her gaze as gasps of horror and disgust sounded from the audience. However, Nobuyuki continued on how he plans to have Hydra agents abduct them and molest them in the real world. The fear were displayed on Asuna's and Leafa's face. The Yuuki matriarch felt her horror and shock give way to simmering anger and hatred. Even when Nobuyuki proceeded to lick away the tears off their faces, while the male teen players were shouting angrily.
It was then that her recovered cellphone rang. This snapped her out of her thoughts and her hands shook as she looked at the caller ID.
"Kouichirou?"
She answers the phone and brought it to her ear. "Hello."
"Hello, mother..." It was indeed Kouichirou. But the tone in his voice was different. "I'm back in Japan."
"When did you-" Kyouko was interrupted when Kouichirou spoke.
"Last night.."
"I thought you were managing the family business in America," Kyouko told her son.
"I was... Until I heard the truth about what happened with RECT... And Asuna..."
"I see..." Kyouko managed.
"And... I heard what happened with you and Sada," Kouichirou added. "Is Sada...?"
"Sada's alright... She's in the hospital, but she's alive..." Kyouko answered. Her voice trembled.
"Mother? Your voice..." the change in his mother's voice and composure was not lost on the Yuuki heir.
Kyouko, realized this, managed to regain her composure. "Long night," she explained.
"I understand..." Kouichirou said. "I'm just glad you both are alive."
"Same goes for Asuna and your father..." Kyouko added. She rubbed her forehead.
"I hear that he is in custody by the Self Defense Forces and the US Navy," he suddenly said.
"That's what I was told last night..." She replied. She then saw Asuna yelling defiantly at Oberon as she started to glow. The outfit Nobuyuki changed her in vanished. And in its place, she sports a red skirt, the white chest plate, and white boots and stockings that ran up to her thighs. All of which have the red cross on it. She then jumped towards the boy in black who stood up. She then proclaimed that Kirito, or Kazuto Kirigaya, is her one true love and husband. While at the same time, berating Nobuyuki as not being 'Family/Husband Material'.
Kyouko's eyes widened as she was still on the phone with her son. Asuna, her daughter, married to Kazuto? It was all sudden for her to process.
"Mother?"
Kyouko snapped herself out of her thoughts. "Kouichirou, where are you now?"
"I'm staying at one of the hotels in Tokyo. As our home still has the press camped outside.."
"Do not say anything to them," Kyouko instructed, "not until I can get our lawyers."
"What are you and father planning to say to everyone?" Kouichirou asked.
Kyouko kept her composure as she watched her daughter and husband fight the evil suitor. "Just do not say anything yet."
There was a short pause before Kouichirou replied. "Yes mother..."
"Alright then," Kyouko said, "but do keep an eye on your father when they are able to release him."
"Will do, mother..." Kouichirou said. "I'll call you when I get a chance..."
"Thank you," Kyouko said as her eyes were still glued to the battle onscreen.
"And Mother... if I may..."
"Go on..."
"I'm watching the news channel going over what happened in ALO..." He added. "... and I think we need to seriously talk about Nobuyuki and the future of RECT and Asuna."
"I understand, Kouichirou..." Kyouko watched Asuna, Kirito, and everyone fighting against Nobuyuki and his Guardians.
"Thank you... I'll call back." After that, the line went dead. It was then that the footage went to Asuna stabbing Nobuyuki in the face, then stabbing him repeatedly as she screamed out every atrocity he committed.
"Asuna..." Kyouko was in shock. To see her meek, gentle daughter express such rage. It was then that Asuna raised the golden sword that Hana called Excalibur.
"AND YOU KILLED MY MOTHER AND SADA!" Asuna screamed as she stabbed Nobuyuki hard with Excalibur. Her statement caused Kyouko to do a double-take.
'She must be referring to the warehouse explosion in Tokyo Harbor..' She realized.
Asuna whispered something to Nobuyuki then slit his throat. The audience gasped as the censors blurred the act, even though it was not that graphic. Even Kyouko gasped at the brutal act Asuna inflicted and Nobuyuki's avatar disappears.
Then, Asuna broke down in sobs while Kirito held her. She was soon joined by two other girls and embraced Asuna. One of them appears to be eight-to-nine years of age.
The footage ended. Silence fell upon the audience.
"Who can blame the poor girl?"
"That monster held her in ALO against her will.."
'More like the devil,' Kyouko thought.
"Glad he got was was coming to him..." One of the commenters said.
"What were the parents thinking?" One of them asked.
"Probably not thinking at all.." Said another.
"Wonder where they are when their daughter needs them..."
"Isn't her father CEO of RECT?"
"Why hasn't he said anything?"
"Let alone realized his mistake earlier?"
"Maybe... he's one of them!"
"Probably!"
"Would make sense for Hydra members to force their own daughter into marriage with another!" One disdainfully chimed.
"Hold on. Hold on." Hana called out while waving her hands. "We don't really know if they were in on it.. They probably were tricked into setting up the marriage."
"I bet the father sold his wife and daughter to them to save his skin!"
"Everyone! Please calm down!" Hana waved her arms about. Trying to calm down the audience.
Kyouko finally had enough. She reached for the remote and switched off the TV set. This was a very shameful episode for the Yuuki family. Because of Nobuyuki, both RECT and the Yuuki family name will be facing with years of shame.
RECT Inc:
Kouichirou Yuuki observes the damages caused by Hydra. He had just arrived on the scene with his personal assistants. The JSDF military police were throughout the premises. He also sees the presence of the Howler platoon still present.
As he walked towards the building, one of the Howlers on duty bumped in front of him with his rifle. "Identify yourself!"
"Kouichirou Yuuki. Son of Shouzou Yuuki." The male Yuuki heir replied.
The aides tried to help, but the American soldier roughly gestured with his rifle. "This area is off-limits!"
"I'm here to clean up the mess caused by Nobuyuki and Hydra.." Kouichirou said to the American soldier. "It's my family's property!" Kouichirou noticed the soldier being hardly any older than 18 or 20 years, but he had a hard and militant posture to him.
"Let him pass." It was Kikuoka who spoke as he strode up to the soldier with some JSDF.
The American soldier looked at Kikuoka, then back at Kouichirou. "Alright... Go ahead..." He steps aside, allowing Kouichirou and his aides inside.
"Mr. Kikuoka."
"Kouichirou Yuuki..." Kikuoka greeted him, "... sorry about that."
"I talked to you over the phone when I was still back in America," Kouichirou recalled. He then looked over at the main campus building. "Anything recovered?" He asks.
"We're still searching the whole campus.." Kikuoka answered. "They've wiped out the majority of the mainframe and corrupted the rest of the data... We're also still searching for bombs that were activated in the offices..."
"Bombs!?" Kouichirou yelled in surprise.
"That's correct..." Kikuoka nodded. "During the raid last night, one bomb detonated when Captain Hernandez attempted to tap into the office computers..."
"Who?" Kouichirou asked.
"One of the Rangers of Howler Platoon," Kikuoka explained.
"Okay... Anything else?" Kouichirou was not thrilled that terrorists inside his family's business had the place rigged.
"So far, we've disarmed about ten bombs... But we're still on the search for more..." The group entered through the front doors to the lobby. There's activity going on throughout the lobby. Both the Howler Platoon and the JSDF military police were to-and-fro. Surveying the damages and locating the bombs, as well as trying to restore the mainframes. However, the interior was a total mess, to the added shock of the young businessman.
"I'm sorry to see your family business in a state like this..." Kikuoka apologized. There were bullet holes everywhere, with even larger holes from explosions. Blood was spattered in other places. As far as the male Yuuki heir's concerned, they removed the dead bodies. Which was a good thing at least.
"Where are the employees!?" Kouichirou gasped, "were there any who were innocent?"
"From the reports, there were employees who were amongst the Hydra operatives." Kikuoka answered. "They switched sides and sabotaged Hydra's plans before they could launch the game internationally..."
"You wouldn't believe this... but it was your little sister."
"What did you say?" Kouchirou asked.
"Asuna... You're little sister managed to infiltrate Hydra's operations and created her band of loyalists to stop Hydra..."
"She did that?" The 25-year old Yuuki was surprised.
"And that's not all..." Kikuoka smirked. "... Her beloved and his friends staged a rescue operation to free Asuna and the 299 players from SAO from captivity... After allying themselves with the Howlers halfway..."
Kouichirou was stumped.
"It was impressive, really.. For Kazuto to risk his life in the face of Hydra to rescue your sister... " Kikuoka commented.
"And your sister really fought back hard... In fact, she actually transformed into her SAO avatar and dueled Nobuyuki alongside Kirito, managing to injure him."
"I've seen her fight in ALO on the news..." Kouichirou added...
'I guess SAO made herself stronger...' He thought.
"Wait a minute," he realized, "transform? Injure?"
"You'll have to watch the footage to see what I meant..." Kikuoka explained. Kouichirou nodded, then shook his head. He had to focus on more immediate concerns.
"And now, we need to focus on the future of RECT..." Kikuoka continued. "Nobuyuki's activities has caused negative reactions towards the company..."
"Well first off," Kouchirou took a deep breath, "where are those employees, are they safe?"
"The employees who have switched sides and those who were not involved are safe..."
"Many have been taken into protective custody, others to hospitals for injuries... but others have been arrested and taken to Camp Zama by the Rangers," Kikuoka revealed.
"Arrested!?" Kouichirou was shocked, "why!?"
"Well, most of them were revealed to be war criminals from the Civil War..." Kikuoka answered. "They're those who managed to escape justice by the end of the war..."
"Wait, the American employees?"
"Pacifican... To be exact..."
"Pacifican? As in the Federated States of Pacifica?"
"That's correct..." Kikuoka nodded. "I was under the impression that many of them were just expats."
"What will happen to them?" Kouichirou asked.
Kikuoka shook his head. "Don't know, but all I know is that they are being incarcerated."
"Even after helping Asuna and the others of stopping Hydra?" Kouichirou rubbed his forehead.
"The Americans are still trying to decide how to handle them."
Kouichirou sighed. "This should at least pardon them. Shouldn't it? It has to!"
"I know what you mean..." Kikuoka reassured him. "But it's their affair, and they'll decide what to do with them... And it probably wouldn't let them go easily..."
"But we are on Japanese soil! And they've helped save my little sister!" Kouichirou couldn't believe what he's hearing.
"Apparently, the American military may not be so easy to forgive," Kikuoka shook his head. "Nonetheless, maybe I can put in a word with Colonel Rogers, since you brought that up."
"Please do..." Kouichirou begged. "They deserve better..."
"Anyway, I do have a disposition on your father."
"When will my father be released?"
"The JSDF Intelligence and the American NCIS are still grilling him, last I heard this morning," Kikuoka indicated.
"So... Not anytime soon then?" Kouichirou surmised.
"That depends on how much he knows about Hydra inside RECT," Kikuoka added.
"And I know for a fact that my family's home still has news reporters camped.. I cannot imagine how tired Mother must be after last night."
"They've been through a huge ordeal..."
Kouichirou then told one of his aides. "Get me everything that we can salvage off those servers."
"Will do, Kouichirou-san.." He replied before leaving with one of the military police technician.
"And we've got a long road of rebuilding this place," Kouichirou muttered, "and our family."
