June 6th ~ Yuuki manor:
Kazuto woke up to slivers of sunlight streaming through the curtains. He glanced around the room, admiring the light pink colors before turning to see Asuna, still sleeping and curled up against him. He had a slight blush as he felt her bare form against his own.
'Just like in SAO.' Kazuto thought happily before cuddling against Asuna. Since he and Asuna finally became official, he made it a point to claim her and erase every bit of mental abuse Nobuyuki/Oberon inflicted. He started off gentle the first night on their honeymoon and took things slowly. As time went on, Asuna felt more and more comfortable and was able to let go of the trauma she faced. And since then, they really got to know each other in the dead of night in slow and sensual intimacy.
Kazuto stroked Asuna's hair gently. She cooed in her sleep and curled up against him even more. Kazuto looked over at the clock on their nightstand to check the time. He sees that it's 7 in the morning. He smiled, knowing what to do to wake his lady.
"Mmmm..." Kazuto kisses her forehead. He even moved himself against her form for good measure. Asuna stirred in her sleep and pressed herself against him. She just smiled as she continued to close her eyes.
"Come on, Asuna," Kazuto cooed, "time to wake up."
"Mmmmm... But I'm so cozy here." Asuna playfully whined. Kazuto smiled at her feigning sleep. He then dragged his fingers against her bare skin. Starting with her shoulders before moving down her back.
"Well, you know that it's still one more day before our weekend..."
"I know..." Asuna moves up until her eyes met his. "But it's so hard when you treat me so well at night."
Kazuto chuckled. "That's true.." He then leans in and plants a sweet, passionate kiss against her lips. The two leaned into the lip lock for a solid twenty seconds. Asuna moaned through their passionate kiss.
Then they released. "We should get ready, dear." Kazuto said.
Asuna stared and smiled. "You sure you don't want to give me a hot start?"
"I do..." Kazuto chuckled. He pressed his lower body against Asuna, making her gasp at how happy he was to see her. Asuna's face went pink.
"Kazuto-kun..." Asuna moaned softly.
Kazuto smirked. He then planted a kiss on Asuna's lips. She felt her face grew hot as they french-kissed. She moaned as Kazuto's tongue and lips went further down her chin, before sucking on her neck. Asuna caressed Kazuto's head and ran her fingers through his hair. Kazuto sucked on Asuna's neck for a bit. His lips were then about to move lower...
"Morning Mommy, Daddy!"
"Eep!" Asuna squeaked in surprised as she and Kazuto quickly pulled away and covered themselves. On the night stand, Yui suddenly appeared on the phone screen. Blushing, Asuna picked up her phone and sees her.
"M-Morning Yui." Asuna waved, trying not to blush so much.
Yui brightened up. "Happy Friday, Mommy, Daddy!" She chimed.
"Happy Friday, Yui-chan," Asuna greeted back, while Kazuto hid himself under the sheets to cool down from the near embarrassment.
"Oh Daddy!" Yui chimed. "Where are you, Daddy?"
Kazuto had to do something, so he stirred under the sheets as if he was just waking up. He then lowered the sheets to around his chest similar to Asuna as he rubbed his eyes.
"Morning, Daddy!" Yui cheered and waved.
"Morning Yui-chan." Kazuto greeted. He could then see how Yui had white long-sleeved pajamas on her avatar. It was rather cute of her to adopt that. "How's our little child doing?" He added with a smile.
Yui cutely covered her yawn with her hand. "Been doing great, daddy. The weekend's almost here. And Strea and I hope you and Mommy will be in Alfheim!"
"Oh we will, Yui-chan. After school, we'll be able to clear Floor 5." Kazuto said.
"Hard to believe it's been one month and we're able to clear four Floors already!" Yui cheered. "And so many people enjoy it!"
"That's good to hear, Yui." Asuna smiled. "And it's also great to see Strea enjoying New Aincrad."
"Speaking of..." Kazuto added. "Where is Strea?"
Yui giggled. She then went off screen. "Strea-chan, wake up!"
There was some giggling before Yui returned on screen with Strea. Kazuto and Asuna could not help but be amused and softly laughing at Strea's appearance.
"Morning Mom, Dad!" Strea cheered. She was wearing cute cat-styled pajamas with a hat sporting cat ears.
"My my, don't you look adorable, Strea." Asuna gushed. "You looked like one of the Cait Sith players."
Strea looked up at her 'cat ears'. She rubbed them happily. "Thank, mom. I figured it looked cute for Nathan." Strea giggled.
"Oh no," Kazuto grew serious, "you are not going to get ahead of yourself, young lady. I sure hope you're not planning any events without our knowledge."
Kazuto gave Strea an intent look. "Strea?"
"No, nothing like that, Dad." Strea responded.
Yui looked up. "Daddy, I'll make sure Strea behaves out there. She has been behaving so far, as well as Nathan has."
"Good," Kazuto said, knowing how overly curious the childish Strea was. Asuna had to keep from giggling.
Strea hugged Yui. "Don't worry, Dad. Besides... I think you and Mom should get up now."
Asuna finally speaks. "Strea's right, Kazuto."
Kazuto sighed, knowing that the morning mood had shifted. "Thank you Strea. Could you and Yui give us some privacy? You two can come back on for breakfast in fifteen minutes."
"Okay Daddy, Mommy!' Yui chimed before she and Strea disappeared from the screen. Kazuto and Asuna sat for a few seconds. The latter suddenly giggled. "Well that is another way to wake up.
"Yeah, it sure is..." Kazuto admitted. He was a bit bummed and near embarrassed at what Yui and Strea nearly stumbled upon him and Asuna doing.
Asuna sees this and hugs Kazuto. "Don't worry, Kazuto. We can continue later tonight if you want."
Kazuto hummed in a pleasant tone as the two got out of bed and begin to get dressed for the day.
A few minutes later:
Kazuto and Asuna were in their school uniforms and going to the kitchen when Sada walked in.
"Morning Kazuto, Asuna." Sada greeted. She was happy to greet two young people in the morning.
"Morning, Sada." Asuna greeted back.
"Hello," Kazuto waved.
"Breakfast is almost ready." Sada said. "I have a Western style breakfast cooking."
"Mmmm... we can hardly wait." Asuna smiled. "And neither can Kazuto." She giggled.
"I'm glad that you think so," Sada smiled, "now for that brother of yours to get out of bed..."
"I'm sure that Kouichirou-niisan will be down here." Asuna said.
"Someone mentioned me?"
Kazuto, Asuna, and Sada looked and see Kouichirou coming down the stairs.
"Onii-san," Asuna greeted.
"Onee-chan, Kazuto-kun." Kouichirou greeted back. "Good morning to the both of you."
"And you're just in time for breakfast." Asuna smiled.
"And for the record, I am not a sleepy head," Kouichirou teased, "don't let my little sister fool you, Kazuto-kun."
"Don't worry, Kouichirou-kun." Kazuto laughed.
Mitchell residence:
Alex got up the moment the alarm on his phone rang and checks the time.
"Seven o'clock..." Alex stretched his arms as he glanced at the window, the sunlight shining through the open window and he feels the ocean breeze flow through his room.
"Summer... yeah." Alex got up and begins to get dressed. He then went downstairs and met his mother. "Morning, mom." He greeted.
"Alex," she greeted back with a friendly smile, "good morning."
"Just one more day 'til the weekend." Alex said. He looked around, and sighed. Both his dad and his elder brother were absent yet again. Ever since the US military went to Defcon Three... their absences were felt even more. But he knew that after what happened a few months, it wasn't much of a surprise. While the US Army 75th Ranger Regiment's 3rd Battalion had been chosen as the main force against Hydra in the countryside of Western Japan, the Navy was still ordered to be on combat standby to provide support.
However, both David and Jon manages to leave the rest of the family messages whenever they got a chance to let them know that they're alright. Amusingly, Jonathan would occasionally complain about playing second fiddle to the Rangers, especially the famed 7th Platoon.
"At least everything's has calmed down." Alex said. However, he would speak too soon as the English language morning news changed to an urgent story.
"We interrupt this morning's standard broadcast to bring you a special news bulletin. Early this morning at 3 AM Tokyo Time, an armed group had seized control of Nippon Airways Flight 23, enroute to Okinawa and diverted it to the abandoned Nishi Airport outside of Hiroshima."
The TV screen then showed a picture of an American official. "We are able to confirm that US Ambassador to Japan Henry Lyman Marx and his family are among the approximately two hundred and five American citizens aboard the aircraft, along with over three hundred Japanese citizens."
"Great..." Alex muttered.
"Our sources have indicated that US Forces of the 3rd Ranger Battalion have been deployed with their affiliated armor and aerial divisions in an armed stand-off outside of the city in cooperation with Ground Self-Defense Force's 13th Brigade. While it is unknown exactly who is responsible for Flight 23's hijacking, defense officials were quick to point fingers at the Hydra fascist organization for the attack."
"In other news, officials from the Chinese States ordered the increase of naval presence alongside with the increasing training of its armed forces."
Alex felt ridiculous. Here he was, living his school life as war was raging across Japan. He shook his head as he wondered when will there be peace. Yet if his dad's lessons told him anything... it was rarely a simple solution once war was underway. He then thought about the battles the original Avengers have fought in their day. Speaking of Avengers...
"Alex?"
He was snapped out of his thoughts before he turned to his mother. "Sorry, got lost in thought.."
However, Mrs. Mitchell could already guess. "You cannot worry about every single conflict erupting around the country. That is the world we live in now. Besides, if they did kidnap our ambassador, just as well they are sending the Rangers to answer to this act."
"You're right, mom." Alex admitted. Marie then gestured lovingly towards the table with dishes of toast, sausage, eggs, and hashbrowns. Alex smiled as he sits down to enjoy the breakfast.
"So... how is your teenage romance with Suguha going, Alex," Marie cutely asked.
Alex blushed slightly before continuing. "It's going great."
"It sounds like she is adjusting to the new school quite well," Marie said, "I can imagine the disruption from having to relocate from her old school on such short notice."
"It can't be helped, Mom," Alex said, "as a fellow survivor, she cannot be at a regular school."
Alex brightened up, "but she is a great student. Especially during physical education."
"Oh?" Marie raised an eyebrow.
"Well, she's been doing kendo since she was young." Alex explained. "Which is why she did great in gym."
"So you have a thing for muscular swordswomen,?" Marie teased.
Alex blushed even more. "Uh... Well..."
"Oh, come come, Alex," Marie reassured. "Was it when you first met her in that ALO game? The way she took on those players by herself?"
"Y-Yes." Alex said at last.
Marie hummed. "And is she a loyal girl?"
Alex nodded. "We managed to help each other through ALO, and into the real world. And she cared for me after I suffered that torture session."
"That's true.." Marie didn't want to be reminded of that night.
"And she's been helping me get back into shape... especially considering that I need to survive Captain Burke's military PT regime," Alex shuddered.
"I've heard about Captain Burke at the SAO/ALO Survivor School." Marie remarked. "Did you know that his brother used to work with Jonathan?"
"I have," Alex nodded, "Taylor Burke."
Marie sat back rather fondly. "He was a kind soul." She said.
"You may not know this, but Taylor would come over sometimes to help with fixes to the house."
"Of the old house back in America?" Alex asked.
Marie nodded.
"I think I remember seeing him. Although, it felt like a long time ago." Alex pondered. "His brother Chris, though... I can see why a lot of soldiers respect and fear him."
"Taylor also help us pack up when the civil unrest was getting worse." Marie continued. "And don't get Chris wrong either, Alex... he helped too."
This gets Alex's attention. "Chris was there too?"
"You know, he's not always 24/7 disciplinarian," Marie revealed, "but he has the weight of his family and father's expectations on his shoulders. Both Chris and Taylor have been training to be soldiers since the age of eight... perhaps even younger."
"Never expected that." Alex admitted.
"And you know, Taylor even claimed that they were shooting guns by the age of ten, and by the time they turned twelve or thirteen, they were already hunting and killing wild pigs with their father." Marie added.
"I remember Chris saying something about riding horses back in ALO." Alex chuckled. "He tried to get one of the god beasts to move. But he wouldn't. I guess he's more suitable for taming the more stubborn beasts back in Texas."
"Sugu managed to get the beast to move." Alex added. He had to wonder if that lovable beast Tonky was still around. But that'll be when they get a chance to arrive at the realm of Jötunheimr. "She named it Tonky.."
"Really?" Marie was interested. "Can you describe this 'Tonky'?"
"Well..." Alex began. "It's like a giant white elephant crossed over with a jellyfish and a rice ball. We just call it a jellyfish elephant."
"Oh, that sounds cute," Marie gushed.
"It is, Mom," Alex said after taking a bite, "though Captain Burke thought Ulysses or Titus were more suitable for his size and strength." He explained that the name 'Tonky' was from a children's book both Kazuto and Suguha used to read when they were young.
"That sounds like Chris," Marie thought about his dissent, "he was always steeped in the history and tales of mighty men and armies."
"Interesting." Alex pondered. "Perhaps we'll come across another Jelly Elephant and he can give it one of those names... Or we can do that for him..."
Alex then finished the rest of his breakfast in good time. "I'll ask Sugu about it this weekend."
"Well, we'd better get you going so you don't miss your train," Marie beamed.
"Of course." Alex smiled.
On the Japanese net:
Both Yui and Strea changed out of their pajamas and into their regular outfits.
"I'm ready to go, Yui!" Strea chimed.
"Alright, Strea!" Yui cheered. Strea lifted up Yui and spun her around, giggling in a child-like manner. Yui laughed along childishly too. They have some time to have fun before meeting up with their parents back in the real world. Yui went over to the digital door that represented the Yuuki Mansion's network boundaries and firewall.
Yui opened the door and she and Strea both walk through it. They then floated up as they took in the lights and wonders of the World Wide Web.
"Ooooooohhh..." Strea's eyes shined with excitement. She was always fascinated with the size and variety of the internet. Especially since the World Wide Web received a make-over a few years ago and have improved since. The old net, as history told, has been either inactive or deactivated by Anderson Tech, and the Chinese States.
Nonetheless, the two girls were able to find an internet library that stored a lot of its old data.
"This is it." Yui said as she observes one of the columns. She tapped on it, and her arm briefly glowed with data lines as she accessed it. She began viewing the history of the Big Tech companies before and after the war. It turned out that many of the current ones were either heavily revamped or entirely new successors to the originals, who either folded or were bought out in the years after the 2020 reset of the global order.
And there was more... Yui sees that the Big Tech companies, such as Google, were in full support of the Sokovia Accords. Which caused division throughout the net. To make matters worse, YouTube decided to ban all ad blocking software and double the ads. While it was normal to have advertisements, but they soon became a nuisance as the ads themselves don't have the skip buttons. Meaning that users had to sit through five to six ads.
To add insult to the injury, they also have those who use memberships to block ads to pay larger fees. Some to almost $100 a day. Many people were outraged, calling it 'highway robbery.'
After a series of settlements, lawsuits, political upheavals, and 'trust busting', the core company itself had come under new management from a friendly rival to Anderson Tech. But that occurred after Anderson Tech decided to release Anderson Tech Online to compete against the companies and advertised it as 'ad free' with no need for membership. Many people flocked towards the new browser upon release. Anderson and the new owner of the former Google, Howard-Canes, weren't the only big players however. A large and well established New York/Florida company known as the Campbell Organization was also in on the technology game with a surprisingly strong showing in the form of the Campbell Media Group. In honor of the late-John Henry Campbell. Yet his living relatives, including one John Campbell Jr., reportedly expressed interest in American politics aside from the media realm.
Yui found America to be a strange country.
'Strange and complicated.' She thought. It was said to be one of largest, most powerful, and richest countries on the planet...
And, while it has it set of problems, they managed to come out victorious and strong.
'How does it hold such large and divergent populations together?' Yui wondered, thinking of the factionalism back in SAO. She then moved on to contemporary world affairs. She focused on one of the co-founders of the Coalition of Free Nations. Israel. She found that they were a nation composed of a unique ethnicity and religious group known as the Jews. As she looked into its history, she reads that it went through tough times. One such many fled Egypt and wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before finally resettling in their newfound home.
And the age of this nation was shocking. It was estimated to be roughly around 1400 B.C. And by her calculations, that made the nation over three thousand years old.
She reads that the Jewish people lived for hundreds of years under Judges before forming a monarchy under their first King, Saul in 1050 B.C. Israel expanded under David from 1010 to 970 B.C. and then reached its height under Solomon from 970 to 930 B.C. With the death of Solomon the united kingdom of Israel split in two with the tribes of Judah and Benjamin forming their own nation, Judah.
Both kingdoms would then fall to their enemies, only for the people of Judah to survive Babylon and Persia and return. And after World War 2, Israel was reborn in 1948 after Britain withdrew from parts of the Middle East and US President Harry Truman announced America's recognition. Yui could not help but think of just how young she and the internet really were compared to mankind, and it floored her.
'Amazing...' She thought with awe. Strea meanwhile was gawking over the retro games section. This also included the Anderson Tech-sponsored games known as V-Gate games. She spotted some military shooter games known as Battlefront and Frontier Horizon.
"Hey, isn't that where they play soldier like Captain America?" Strea scanned the titles, some take place in World War 1, the First Korean War, Vietnam, Gulf War and such. She had to wonder how many wars there were. She also spotted some that take place during the First Civil War.
That is... the American First Civil War. Strea was astounded that there was an earlier war in the States. Curiously, she decided to look into the First Civil War and how it occurred. She found that it was not the first time that the country Nathan hailed from had a mutual quarrel over political and civil rights. As she read it, she learned that the civil war was over the subject of slavery.
While most of the world ended the practice of slavery, there were some that still practice it. America was one of them. However, it only been practice in the southern part of the nation. And the worst part was that an entire political party and system had arisen around racial supremacy and economic domineering over these slaves, so much so that they waged war against their own country and even had a president murdered in the aftermath.
And despite the former slaves were freed, the Democrat party continued racial segregation towards them to keep them from experiencing their rights. And with that, came an increasingly tyrannical strain of social management that would affect people of all races, especially after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a moderate constitutional Democrat himself.
Then, she came across the first black president elected back in 2008. Barack Obama. She recalled Alex and Andrew mentioned that Bruce Wilson was the second black man to be elected as president.
'So this must be the first.' Strea thought. While there was much enthusiasm for his presidency, it all faded when he was exposed for using the national security state to benefit his own Democrat Party and to suppress critical information regarding his abuse of power.
Fortunately, he only lasted one term after the Chitauri invaded New York City back in 2012, which was election year. Obama was accused of launching a nuclear strike on Manhattan Island in attempts to stop the invasion, which would kill everyone in the city. While it was later revealed that it was the World Council that issued the nuclear strike, it was pinned on Obama after everything else that happened during his first term.
Despite his maneuvering, the criminal allegations and the political fallout of the worst attack on American soil by a foreign power since the attacks of 2001 added fuel to candidate Matthew Ellis' criticisms of the president being too preoccupied with his own political self-image and mismanagement of critical military and intelligence resources. And the Sokovia Accords and the assassination of John Henry Campbell, along with the out-of-control crisis in Eastern Europe reached its boiling point.
While President Ellis became a voice for moderation and refocusing America's national security outwards... he would ultimately fail in his attempts to reign in the increasingly rogue elements of his own government, culminating in a coup and assassination attempt against him. All which caused Ellis to resign in disgrace while America crumbled into chaos.
Strea had to think that was why Nathan was here in Japan. This also included his friends, which they all became his neighbors.
'But I wonder why they do not return home.' The war was over and everything has calmed down despite reconstruction taking longer.
Suddenly, the 'watch' on Strea's wrist beeped... it was a timer.
"Yui, it's time to head back to mom and dad." She said. Yui looked to Strea. She noticed how Strea had taking to wearing digital representations of those thing humans called watches or time pieces.
"Okay, Strea." Yui nodded. The two floated back towards their home hub.
Yuuki Manor, Real World:
Kazuto and Asuna sat at the dining room table as both Shouzou and Kyouko arrived.
"Mother, Father," Asuna greeted with a bright smile.
"Morning Asuna, Kazuto." Shouzou and Kyouko greeted, smiling in return. "How is our favorite son-in-law this morning?"
"Doing fine, Mr. and Mrs. Yuuki." Kazuto replied. "And I can also assure the both of you that my homework is all done."
"That's good to hear." Kyouko nodded. She was happy that Asuna married a diligent young man concerned about his work. As well as looking into Anderson Tech as a future job, after college that is.
"It was a lot of work, but it was amazingly simple to understand," Kazuto remarked happily.
"Very true, Kazuto." Asuna agreed. "Good thing you're a genius."
Kazuto blushed from Asuna's compliments. "Um... thank you."
Asuna giggled and hugs her husband. Then both Yui and Strea appeared on Asuna's phone.
"We're back!" Strea chimed. "And just in time too."
Kazuto and Asuna beamed as their lovable AI girls returned.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Yui cheered from Asuna's phone. Kouichirou was touched as he saw Asuna and Kazuto talk with Yui and Strea. As Asuna turned her phone around, the AI girls waved.
"Morning, Grandpa Shouzou, Grandma Kyouko, and Uncle Kouichirou!" Yui cheered.
The two elder Yuukis softly smiled. "Morning, girls." Kyouko greeted.
"How's our little angels doing this morning?" Shouzou asked.
"We are happy for another day," Yui cutely replied.
"And can't wait for the weekend," Strea added with giggles.
"Because your mom and dad will be on," Shouzou remarked.
Strea nodded. "And Nathan and everyone."
Shouzou chuckled for Strea.
"I bet you will be having fun." Kouichirou added.
"And what are you doing again, today, Grandpa?" Yui asked.
Shouzou smiled before answering. "CEO of the RECT company. I've got a lot of work to do."
"Okay, Grandpa." Yui smiled.
"I read about chief executive officers," Strea chimed. "They're in charge with managements of an organization, mainly with a company or nonprofit institution. CEOs find roles in various organizations, including public and private corporations, nonprofit organizations, and even some government organizations. The CEO of a corporation or company typically reports to the board of directors and is charged with maximizing the value of the business, this includes maximizing the share price, market share, revenue, or another financial metric. In the nonprofit and government sector, CEOs typically aim at achieving outcomes related to the organization's mission, usually provided by legislation. they're also frequently assigned the role of the main manager of the organization and the highest-ranking officer in the C-suite."
Shouzou smiled as Strea rambled off a bit. "That is right... and I am both the CEO and owner of RECT. It has been in my family for generations."
"That's amazing." Strea smiled.
"And I'm the next in the line," Kouichirou said.
"Congratulations, Uncle Kouichirou!" Yui cheered. "We understand that after what happened, RECT had recovered from the whole scandal."
Kouichirou chuckled a bit. "Thank you... but it was not so simple you see. Many people still have a negative impression of us."
Yui nodded before adding. "No matter what happens, we'll pull through together... And people will see that you and the family are good, Uncle!"
"Thanks, Yui." Kouichirou smiled. It was cute to be called 'Uncle' like this by Yui.
"I couldn't agree with you more." Sada said coming in. She looked upon her employers, especially Asuna and Kazuto with happiness. "I can drive the both of you to school for time and safety," she offered.
Everyone looked at Shouzou and Kyouko.
"You can do that, Sada." Kyouko smiled. "I would feel much more comfortable to not have them as exposed."
"I'll make sure they get to school safely." Sada reassured.
Shouzou then told Kazuto. "And I'm certain that our discrete American friends with their sniper rifles are watching the rooftops for you both." Asuna and Kazuto gave him a double-take.
"I know that you have an American Delta Force sniper detail monitoring your movements," Shouzou revealed. He had happened to read Kazuto's mind in passing one time revealing his knowledge of Delta Force.
"Y-You have?" Kazuto stammered.
Shouzou nodded. Kazuto and Asuna were curious of how he knew. Then again, it's possible that he may have been contacted by the authorities.
"So how long has American special forces been keeping tabs on you and my daughter, Kazuto?"
Kazuto came forward, "since February. Captain Burke told me." He then explained how Captain Burke received information from the Cardinal System that was used in SAO as well as in the old ALO server.
"And that's not all, because of Asuna's inside knowledge of Hydra and my interactions with Akihiko Kayaba's AI," Kazuto revealed, "Burke said that the US Defense Intelligence Agency considers the both of us subjects of interest."
"I see..." Kyouko pondered. She remembered Chris Burke revealing the American government's interest in both Kazuto and Asuna. Two teens being shadowed by Delta Force security details was affirmation of his statements.
"And so far, nothing has happened." Kazuto added.
"That doesn't necessarily mean they have left you alone," Kouichirou warned.
"True..." Kazuto admitted.
"It could be a good and bad thing," Kouichirou explained, "if they are protecting you, great... But if you get on their bad side.."
"They could take us in," Kazuto said. Silence filled the dining room.
"Well I can say this as the head of the family," Shouzou said with determination. "No government, even the American government, is going to simply have their way with my daughter and son-in-law, no matter what national or global security justification they give."
"And we'll do whatever we can to protect our children." He finishes.
Kyouko spoke up, "Kazuto, you and Asuna should not cause alarm, but if these Americans start giving you trouble, let us know."
"We will, mom." Asuna replied.
"I'll complain to their embassy if I have to," Kouichirou smirked.
"And we'll help out too, mommy and daddy." Yui chimed.
Strea looked off at another window as she read up on Delta Force. "Human governments are so complicated..." she muttered.
"So true, Strea..." Yui agreed.
"That's the nature of our world, Strea," Asuna said with a sad smile. "It always has been."
After Asuna and Kazuto finishes their breakfast, they both got their schoolbags. Sada was already outside getting the family car started. Kazuto stepped outside, and looked around. With his sharpened eyesight, he perceived a black sedan parked on the opposite side from Sada. Under the tinted glass, he could make out the faint outlines of two American military-aged men... no doubt spotters for an out-of-sight Delta team.
Kazuto sighed before guiding Asuna to Sada and they climbed in together. Asuna could already guess what the other vehicle was about. "It's them?"
"Yep." Kazuto nodded. "Still watching us."
"Of course." Asuna glanced over the black sedan. The two teens climbed into the family car and buckled in. Sada turned the car and they began moving down the driveway and onto the street. True enough, the American car turned around and followed.
USS Bruce Wilson, Enroute to Hiroshima:
Captain America II entered the SCIF room along with Captains Walker and Pierson for the hostage situation around Nippon Airways 23. So far, the situation is calm, but tensions are still high. Other platoons of the Third Ranger Battalion fresh in Japan were currently in a standoff with the hostage takers at Nishi Airport, with scouts cooperating with recon units of the Japanese 13th Brigade in trying to gather intelligence on the ground. Ambassador Marx and his family being among the hostages made this a high stakes affair.
"Alright, now that everyone's here." Chris began. He addressed the ranking NCOs of his platoon. "At 0300 hours local time, Japanese air authorities were alerted to the hostile takeover of the aircraft carrying our ambassador and several other staff and ranking officers and family to Okinawa."
Chris activated the laptop and images of the ambassador appeared in the holo-image. "We have been able to confirm from the flight manifest and drone probes that Henry Lyman Marx is in fact on board, and is currently being held somewhere aboard the aircraft."
"This includes his family?" Captain Walker asked. He brought up an image of Marx's wife and their four kindergarten age children, two boys and two girls.
"And there's more..." Chris added. "Our scout drones have picked up increased activity in the surrounding facilities before a powerful jamming signal severed connections."
"Meaning that they've jammed communications and connections with our drone." Pierson deduced.
"Sounds like a high-tech group we've got," Walker remarked.
"Precisely." Chris added. He then brought up a tactical map of the Nishi Airport. "Fortunately, we managed to scanned the entire area before communications were lost."
He tapped on a touchscreen, bringing up a green image of the Boeing 747's location on the tarmac. Several areas are highlighted in red to show areas where the terrorists are dug in.
"There are several intact World War II hangars that are suspect. No doubt housing Quinjets for them to use against us."
Chris expanded the map to show blue signatures of allied troop and vehicle formations out west. "We've maintained our positions, but are unable to approach them without alerting the terrorists. They also have radar systems operational, meaning that anything that approached within the radius of the perimeter, they'll execute the hostages."
One of the sergeants raised his hand. "Sir, have we been able to identify who they are?"
Chris shook his head. "So far we have not received any new communications, and the jamming keeps our drones from being able to transmit any new intel, but Okinawa is assuming that we are likely up against Hydra."
"So, our first mission is to take out the radar systems before we do anything else." Chris then added, "however, because these powerful radars double as the jamming sources, and the fact that not even our satellite imaging has been able to pinpoint them, leads us to believe that these transmitters are well concealed from any attempts to strike them from the air."
"So, this will be a ground operation?" One sergeant asked.
"Of course... and because of the high-stakes nature of the operation and the hostages in question, we will be receiving Tier One spec ops as reinforcements," Chris revealed.
"Alright then." Walker nodded.
"Tier One, sir?" Ramirez asked.
"You'll know when you see them." Chris then straightened up. "That is all that I have for now, but stand by for further details as they come."
"We will, sir." Walker nodded.
"All NCOs are to return to their respective companies and standby," Chris said, "while your captains will return to the bridge to consult with the other platoon on the ground."
"Yes sir." Everyone replied with a salute and the NCOs cleared the room. The three captains looked to each other.
"You know," Walker expressed his thoughts, "given how Hydra has laid low apart from the insurgent ambushes, a high-level hostage taking would make the most sense for a resurgence."
"Yeah, but we don't know who we're facing this time." Pierson added. "They could be anybody."
"Anybody with multi-frequency jamming capabilities?" Walker raised an eyebrow.
"Most equipment haven't all been accounted for during the Civil War. We don't know how many of our tech was stolen or sold from Pacifica's side." Pierson explained.
"What about the Chinese?" Walker then posed.
Chris quickly disputed with a headshake. "Politically risky," he pointed out, "and it would not serve their larger objectives without major political blowback."
"Okay." Walker said. "Anyone else that would do this?"
Chris decided to reign it in. "We don't really know who's behind the hijacking. But whoever they are, they've picked the wrong people to kidnap, and we're gonna show then what happens when they mess with us. In the meantime, we continue to work with 4th Platoon's scouts and drones on gathering intel, and hopefully OSS's signal intelligence can crack whatever firewalls the enemy is putting up."
"Alright, sir." Pierson nodded.
"Now..." Chris gestured, "let's get back up to the bridge. We need to start coordinating with Captain Miller."
"Got it, sir." Walker, Pierson, Ramirez and the other sergeants followed Captain Burke to the bridge.
The bridge was filled with tension as Titania stood in front of the windows, one hand placed on the glass. Already her eyes were narrowed as she pondered the recent events. Nippon Airways Flight 23 was being held hostage at the abandoned Nishi Airport with over two hundred Americans and three hundred Japanese.
Already she was trying to figure out a solution to rescuing the hostages, and some ideas came to her mind, two of which involved her AI friend, Unity. Mostly pertaining to the hacking of said airliner's systems, and no doubt to try and disrupt the hostage takers' movements on the ground via taxiing quickly. She wasn't too thrilled about doing that, so she was hoping the second option, hijacking the plane's radio and sending out a signal to law enforcement to come around from the blind spot of the plane to take out the hijackers, would be more viable. However, those plans all went out the carrier window as soon as she learned about the multi-frequency jamming that was blanketing the area. All of the Helicarrier's recon UAVs had been forced to return with far less intel than she and Captain America II had hoped for.
For now, she'll continue to observe the situation. She turned back to the bridge crew, her gaze landing on the radar screen. So far, all she could do right now was rely on radar to keep tabs on the jammed area, since it showed up as a big space of static on the radar.
Captain America II and his fellow platoon officers then showed themselves. One of the bridge crew announced, "Captain America on the bridge!"
Many on the bridge snapped to attention and saluted Captain America II. The symbolic officer saluted back.
"At ease." Captain America II walked up to Captain Miller and saluted. "Captain Miller."
"Captain America," Miller greeted back with her salute.
"How goes the situation?" He then asked.
Titania snorted. "The entire airport is being jammed. We had to recall the drones because of it. Also, I had plans to have Unity hack into the airliner to take control of the radio and use it, but that's out the window because of the jamming."
She then gestured to the radar screen. "Only good bit of news is that as long as the jamming is in effect, the plane is still there. But we do have satellites keeping tabs on the area as well for any sign of the plane's departure."
Captain America II looked up at the holographic radar display. "What what about 4th Platoon, anything from their scouts?"
"So far things are not looking too good. Their own drones were forced to pull back. The scouting teams haven't even gotten close because of the jamming. All their radios conked out once they passed the perimeter," Miller replied, narrowing her eyes.
Chris narrowed his gaze. "Might we have some electronic counter-measure assets the Air Force can lend us?"
"It depends on what kind of ECMs they've got, as well as the type of jammers," Unity chimed in. "I've been running scans on them, and they are pretty powerful pieces of equipment. The only trouble is, I can't get a decent read on their frequency, which will give me a good idea on who made 'em."
"I've got someone who can help," someone suddenly called out. The two captains turned to see Captain Thomas 'Monarch' Dekker and Robin 'President' Kuo of the Hitman Team.
"Monarch?" Captain America II asked, "What are you doing here?"
"Hm? Who do you know then?" Titania asked him. "And why are you here, anyway?"
"I'm here to assist you on the mission." Monarch smirked.
"We can use all the help then," Unity added. "You have a highly advanced AWACS aircraft attached to Firebird Squadron."
Titania's eyes widened a bit. "Oh?"
Robin Kuo broke out the finger guns. "You guessed right, cybergirl!" The Korean WSO grinned, "our old friend AWACS Galaxy is coming up from Okinawa upon orders from Kadena in his E-7 Wedgetail to provide a boost in your surveillance."
"We also have the possible locations of the jammers and radars that the enemy's using." She added.
Unity let out a cackle at that. "That's brilliant!" she chirped.
Captain America II gave the two pilots a look. "You flew out over their airspace?"
Titania smirked. "Must've been using cloud cover or something to block the plane's visual silhouette," she remarked.
"That's right." Kuo replied.
"And a burst of high-powered jamming from our Super Tomcat's own radar when they tried to lock on to us," Dekker chuckled.
Captain America II just gave Monarch a stare. "You are either brave or dare devilish."
"I come in both packages." Monarch remarked with a smile.
Captain America II just shook his head. He nonetheless snapped back to attention on the matter. "How soon can Galaxy join the operation?"
"He should be here soon." Kuo answered.
"I hope so," Miller remarked. "The more information we get, the better." Miller then turned to her CIC. "As soon as the Firebird Squadron AWACS enters our operation airspace, contact him immediately."
The man gave a salute. "Yes, ma'am!"
Captain America II then told Monarch, "Monarch, I want you and Prez to remain on combat standby with your plane until Howler is ready to launch. We are also expecting special ops reinforcements to assist with our infiltration of the target in about an hour."
"Yes sir." Monarch nodded. "You can count on Hitman Team's support."
"And you can count on our air wings and AI support," Miller said.
"That's right!" Unity chimed. "And with AWACS capability, my counter-hacking capabilities will be boosted."
"That's good to hear." Captain America said. "I want every capability we can leverage against whoever these terrorists are and get our people put before they start dying."
Unity saluted before disappearing back into the servers. Captain America looked around the bridge to everyone on board. "Alright people, let's start getting our fellow Americans home safely."
It was then, the CIC comms came to life. "Ma'am, sir," CIC reported, "we are getting a broadcast from inside the jamming zone!"
"Is it him?" Miller asked.
"No, ma'am," CIC answered, "it's not ours. Do you want me to patch it through?"
"Yes, we need to know who they are."
"You heard her, airman," Captain America II concurred.
The CIC operator patched the signal through. Miller's eyes narrowed dangerously.
"This airplane is under the control of the Red Rising Sun and our allies in the Ten Rings! We have the American imperialist scum, Lyman Marx in our power!"
"We can't let this go on..." Miller muttered. She glanced to Monarch. "What's the status of the AWACS?" she asked.
"He's close." Monarch replied. "He'll be here in two minutes."
"All right. As soon as he's within range, link him directly to the Wilson. We need Unity to start counter-hacking as soon as possible," she said.
Logan Walker rolled his eyes. "Great... now we've got communists and jihadis. And I thought the civil war was full of them." he added.
"Quiet," Captain America told his peer.
"And we strike a blow against America's invasion of our people's lands and their interference for the Zionist Jews occupying the Middle East," the Japanese communist raged aloud. "We will continue to act unless the American Imperialists give in to our demands and leave Japan and the Middle East!"
"And in case you think we are not serious..." the camera then turned. On the screen, the American ambassador and his family are seen, surrounded by several soldiers in helmets. Captain America II and the whole bridge crew saw Henry Lyman Marx all tied up with duct tape on his mouth, and a sign draped over his chest with Japanese words in red paint. Chris knew what it read, but was not going to repeat its vulgar contents. His family were huddled together and scared out of their minds.
Miller's eyes hardened. "Please tell me that AWACS is here...!" she whispered. "We could really use Unity's hacking abilities right about now..."
"We have this imperialist along with three hundred other imperalists," the communist warned, "unless the American government pays one billion dollars to us as restitution for their victims in Japan and Palestine, we will kindly ask the flight attendants to select for us an American every half hour that our demands are not met..."
"Captain, I've detected Galaxy within the airspace." Unity reported. "I will open communications with him."
"Do it," Chris prompted. The COMMs line flickered and a male voice came over the speakers.
"USS Wilson, this is AWACS Galaxy of the Firebird Squadron."
"This is Captain Miller," the female carrier captain responded, "go for Wilson."
"Roger that, Captain Miller. Heading for the Wilson now."
The captain turned and her eyes picked out the AWACS and its escorts. "Good. Unity, prepare to start hacking counter-measures," she ordered. "Also, Galaxy, we need your equipment for amplifying up and running. Unity is going to be utilizing it to enhance her counter-hacking capabilities to get through the jamming."
"Roger that," Galaxy acknowledged.
"Hey Monarch," Comic then called in, "you got a little ahead of us there!"
"Hehe, you know how things get." Monarch chuckled.
"That is true!' Galaxy chuckled. "Speaking of, we got the equipment set. So, Unity, do what you gotta do."
"I'm on it!" Unity chimed.
"Galaxy, this is Howler 7-1 Actual of the 75th Ranger Regiment," Captain America II called out.
"Captain America the Second?" The AWACS greeted, "it's an honor to meet you sir."
"I'm sorry, but we do not have much time," Chris warned, "the hostage takers are a group of violent anti-US communists, and we've got only an hour before they decide to execute one of the hostages."
"Once we locate and destroy the jammers, we can move in and rescue the hostages."
"Alright then, all I have to do is fly around until Unity is finished." Galaxy said.
"Understood," Titania responded.
"Monarch, you and President should get into your plane and standby for launch," Captain America II prompted, "Howler 7-1 will follow behind you."
"We're on it." Both Monarch and President acknowledged before heading towards the hanger.
Walker and Pierson walked up to their themed colleague. "Sounds like we're about to have our turn," Pierson commented.
"Been a while since we saw action." Walker added.
"Well, get ready, because we are seeing action again," Captain America II assured, "as soon as Firebird can reduce their hacking and Tier One reinforcements arrive, we should have sufficient information on the situation at Nishi Airport to move in on the enemy."
"Alright, we'll head to the armory now." Both Walker and Pierson turned to head to the armory. Captain America II allowed himself a slight smile of satisfaction. So far, things were falling into place. Still, there was much to be done.
"Galaxy, while you're working with the AI Unity, patch me through to the 4th Platoon commander," he ordered.
SAO/ALO Survivor School - Nishitokyo, Tokyo:
Alex was focusing his attention on the accelerated math class. It was a lot for him to take in, despite the fact math is one of his best subjects alongside with history. The accelerated course was quite a lot, with many students taking various measures to stay focused. Alex had his own trick to keep himself focused.
"Ouch," he winced slightly as he lit his finger against his wrist. He used his powers to keep himself focused. While a bit painful, but it was better than using a rubber band. And the minor burn healed quickly.
'Now, where was I?' Alex looked through his tablet.
Meanwhile, Kazuto was at another desk, he had his technique of keeping himself focused. He glanced down at his shining wedding ring. He and Asuna were the talk of the entire school of being a married couple. Most of the girls were fond of Asuna as well as the guys were jealous of Kazuto. Some even confided in him that they had secret crushes or girlfriends that they wanted to marry themselves.
Kazuto found all of it amusing. One of the American soldiers even joked to that such talk should be kept secret, lest one Captain Chris Burke overhear it and give a lecture on fraternization regulations. It still hadn't prevented conversations about their marriage to take place.
He was then called upon to answer a question. Kazuto looked upon the question on the digital board, which asked what 44 times 33 equals.
"1452," Kazuto quickly answered.
"Correct." The teacher nodded.
"Sharp as ever, Kirito," someone muttered as he sat down. He glanced the source of the voice, Nathan just gave a thumbs-up. Kazuto smirked as he glanced back down to his tablet.
In another classroom:
Asuna and Suguha sat in the history classroom. While Suguha struggled a bit, Asuna was as composed as ever.
'Perhaps I can have Alex teach me about history,' Sugu thought, 'he knows more that I do.'
The subject in question was one of the most controversial conflicts of the 20th century, the Vietnam War. Which America fought in back in the 1960s and 70s. All she knew then was that America was fighting some long war with Vietnamese guerillas in the jungle. It'll be something she should ask Alex about.
The war itself began without even a declaration from the government and it was the only war that never used any armored vehicles such as tanks.
"President Lyndon Johnson used the Gulf of Tonkin Incident to declare military action in South Vietnam to deter communist aggression from the North," the teacher went on. "However, the US armed forces, at the time, weren't prepared or trained for asymmetric warfare as much of the war took place in the jungles."
He then clicked on the digital board to bring up pictures of US soldiers and their equipment. Some of the US soldiers are armed with M-16 rifles posing in front of a Huey helicopter. It was only later into the war that the military recognized the need for new tactics and equipment. One of them involved a series of napalm attacks on targeted areas, it was known as 'rolling thunder'."
Asuna and the others watched as US fighter jets dropped bombs that exploded into fiery orange bursts. Some of the ALO survivors could not help but gasp, thinking about their experiences with the Howler Platoon Rangers' firepower. Asuna was amazed that Americans had this kind of firepower since 1964. However, she did wonder why and how they lost that war.
"However, the napalm, while effective, took a serious toll that may have ultimately backfired." The lecturer then gave a warning, "be advised that I am about to share some historical photographs that may be graphic in nature."
Some of the ALO and SAO survivors steeled themselves in preparation. The teacher tapped on the prompt... Images from the napalm aftermath are displayed. Some of the boys grunted, while girls like Suguha gasped... entire forests had been blackened and flattened, while combat photography from the US Army showed the results napalm had on humans, enemy soldiers and unfortunate civilians alike.
Suguha shivered, she was glad that no one suffered from actual burns from the ALO game. Some of the victims barely looked human.
"While the strikes did drove the enemy back, it had consequences." The teacher continued. "Most of all in the realm of public opinion as the truth behind the war on the ground began to contradict the US government's claims of victory." More images of the reality of war then showed the consequences of combat on the Americans and Vietnamese. This included the anti-war protests back in America.
"And after the Tet Offensive in 1968," the teacher went on, "while the US and their South Vietnamese allies were able to beat back the Viet Cong and the NVA..."
Asuna couldn't understand why many Americans opposed the war. She understood that it was chaotic with poor weapons and tactics.
"... public morale and support for the war decreased as the truth came out. Most of the anti-war activists will rise during the latter years of the war. Later on, they will get involved in politics and continued their war against America from the inside."
"As it turned out, the anti-war movement had been infiltrated by pro-Soviet individuals and groups in the midst of the social discord in the wake of the war and the Civil Rights struggle in America."
Asuna was surprised by the fact that pro-Soviet individuals went by unchecked. Something like that would've been noticed and apprehended. Then again, Hydra managed to stay in the shadows undetected for nearly a century.
"Anyways, with the decrease in support for the war, US military morale suffered, and the US government of 1968 was destabilized with the upcoming elections around the corner. The war will continued until 1975 after the Fall of Saigon."
Asuna could not help but think with these history lessons about how similar the fighting between American Rangers and Japanese Hydra in the countryside sounded to the Vietnam battlefields. She hoped and prayed that it wouldn't end in American defeat, she didn't want to think what would happen if Hydra won. And most of all, she prayed for Japan that it would not be devastated to the extent South Vietnam was with thousands upon thousands dead...
Suguha, on the other hand, was shocked by the results during the Vietnam War.
'Could this be our country's fate?' Suguha thought to herself. The past few months were tough despite getting through it all. Listening to this lecture on Vietnam, she could not help but think of the news and social media postings of distress from people in small towns and the country as their lands and neighborhoods became battlefields. Entire fields and small villages had been razed to the ground between Hydra attacks and Ranger counterattacks. This also included natural countrysides that have not seen such destructive battles. One video she could now remember was an elderly man lamenting the destruction of his rice fields with dead US soldiers and Hydra littering the place with their bloodied remains.
She also thought of Kazuto's superpowers as well as Asuna's and Alex's. She hoped that they would not be drawn any further into this war...
Hundreds of miles away..
MacDill Air Force Base, USSOCOM Headquarters, Florida, USA:
General Samuel Coriolanus Burke had a physician who often chided him on his 'nightbird' tendencies, paired with rising earlier than most other men of his age. Yet friends who knew him best, including Marine Corps General Franklin Felix and Air Force General Shepard Ross, would recognize that forcing him to sleep longer would be like telling raptors not to fly. Old Sam, as many called him, was a very busy and diligent man.
"So, is there anything else you want to tell me?" General Burke asked. He was currently online with US Southern Command concerning anti-smuggling operations in the Caribbean and northern South America. All of which involved cracking down human trafficking involved with Hydra.
"Ghost Recon just intercepted another one, sir," the officer from Southern Command reported, "more minors, some testing positive for metahuman capabilities, along with performance enhancing drugs believed by Defense Intelligence to be used for Hydra's super-soldier projects." It was well known among the higher echelons of USSOCOM that Hydra was attempting to find cheaper and more mass-produced alternatives to the super-soldier serum. After reading the reports from Wakanda of how Hydra was able to reverse-engineer the super-soldier serum back in World War II. It was possible that anyone could have an army of super-soldiers at their disposal.
The joint Ghost Recon/Wakandan raid on their base in Central Africa was a huge hit, but Burke was under no illusion that Hydra's program had ended. To him and everyone, it felt like it was just beginning.
"Excellent. Tell Mitchell that he's done an excellent job."
"That's not all," the Southern Command liaison said, "the Ghosts' Bravo Team have also intercepted intelligence from a base on the Colombia-Venezuelan border regarding General Tedros' operations."
"Have they decrypted the messages?" General Tedros was a powerful Venezuelan Army warlord who operated his units like his own personal troops. During the Second Civil War, Venezuela took advantage of the crisis and took control of American-owned facilities. Mainly oil refineries and reserves. The Venezuelan occupation of Trinidad and Tobago undermined previous American sanctions, and gave the regime the means to intensify its aggression against other South American nations. General Tedros as such had been named as a high-level threat by the US government, with USSOCOM tasked with either capturing or killing him. However, capturing him will lead to clues of capturing the Venezuelan president, Ramon Solano. Since taking power in a coup, Solano has been leading Venezuela's military aggression from underground.
"We have sir," the liaison said, "and it confirms intelligence that Hydra is in contact with Tedros."
"Of course, then Solano would have access with advanced weapons to supply his soldiers." Burke sighed.
"Correction if I may, sir," the officer raised his hand on the screen, "Hydra has been exclusively contacting Tedros. We have not intercepted any evidence of them interacting with the rest of the Venezuelan government."
"They could be trying to hide back into the shadows." he added. "After all, this isn't the first time they've done it."
But something in the back of his mind told him that Tedros had his own ambitions, which did not include Solano in his future.
"Alright, keep an eye out for him." Burke advised. "And prioritize any further intel on his ties to Hydra."
"Understood, General." the officer acknowledged. With that, the call ended. However, Old Sam still had about three to four hours of night work ahead before lights out midnight. He then turned to the next hot theater on his agenda, the Asia-Pacific.
It was then that he got an urgent ringing on his comms. He looks at the caller ID. 'Colonel Steve Rogers'
He accepted. "General Burke."
"Colonel Rogers." Burke greeted. "What is the status of the rescue operation in Japan?"
"It's underway, sir." Rogers answered. "And your son- I mean, Captain America is currently overseeing the preparations to rescue Ambassador Marx."
"How long do we have until the deadline ends?" General Burke asked.
"We only have less than one hour before they kill a hostage," Rogers relayed, "the group calling itself the Red Rising Sun declared that unless the ransom is paid, they will force the airline crew to select a random American to be killed. If not, they will kill a Japanese hostage as punishment for hesitation."
"But we won't give them the chance to do that." Rogers added.
"I would expect you and Captain not to," Samuel Burke was to the point, "and you should be expecting Metal Team and a JTF-2 unit to join your platoon shortly."
"I have received word regarding Metal Team and JTF-2." Rogers replied. "Though I am surprised that Canada is sending their own special forces."
"The Canadians are always full of surprises." Burke commented. "But intel indicates that the Canadians have an HVI onboard that they wish to extract."
"And they didn't say who it was then." Rogers asked.
"They did send me a bio, Colonel," General Samuel Burke revealed, "he is a technologist and leader in the field of vibranium research. JTF-2 is being tasked with his safe extraction, and the Canadians are willing to assist us if we can assist them with this high value individual."
"I'll relay this message to the USS Wilson to keep an eye out for him." Rogers said. It was then that another urgent call came in... it was marked as an emergency for both Colonel Rogers and General Burke. They both answer it after reading it.
"This is US Air Force Pacific Command, we have an in-flight emergency being reported as an armed takeover involving US citizens and military personnel!"
"This is Colonel Rogers," Steve replied, "we are aware of the situation involving Nippon Airways 23, and the 3rd Ranger Battalion is responding."
"Not Nippon Airways," the USAF caller corrected, "it's a Korean Airlines flight!"
"Say again?" General Burke asked, not wanting to jump to conclusions.
"I repeat, a Korean Airlines flight is reporting an armed takeover involving US citizens and military personnel! It's Flight 781 out of Anchorage, and they are being diverted!"
'Two hijackings?' Burke thought bitterly.
"Where is that plane being taken!?" Colonel Rogers asked.
The USAF caller looked at the reports on his desk before answering. "Tokyo ATC is tracking the target... it's changed course East of Tokyo to a west-southwest bearing..."
"How long until they reach their target?" Burke asked.
"We're not certain, but it's current bearing suggests the direction of the cities of Osaka and Hiroshima," the Air Force officer reported. That told both Colonel America and Old Sam what they needed to know.
"It must be Red Rising Sun," Rogers realized, "they just took more hostages for the Hiroshima situation."
Burke clenched his teeth. These Japanese communists were getting very bold and dangerous. "Do we have anyone else to intercept Flight 781?"
"We've got two F-22s shadowing the 747 right now," the officer indicated.
"Okay, anyone else?"
"That is all we could scramble on short notice from Kadena, sir," the officer admitted.
"Very well then." Burke sighed. "We'll make what we have. Make sure to let me and Colonel Rogers know as soon as they land."
"Will do, general." The USAF caller nodded.
Colonel Rogers sighed, "I'll notify Captain America."
"Good, anything else to report?" Burke asked. There was silence. With that, General Burke finished with, "Colonel, I am charging you with making these two flights priority. Get those men and women home safe with whatever force is necessary."
"Yes sir, general." Colonel Rogers saluted before the comms ended. General Burke was steeley eyed as ever as he prepared to submit a report to the President concerning Japan.
USS Wilson:
"Another plane was hijacked?" Captain America II questioned CIC.
"That's what Colonel Rogers reported, sir. Kadena has two F-22 Raptors shadowing KAL 781 right now."
"Any plans of trying to bring it down safely?" Captain America II asked. "Where is that plane headed right now?"
"They're heading to a west-southwest bearing." The CIC answered. "Their current heading will take them over the cities of Osaka and Hiroshima if they do not land."
Captain America II sighed. Now they have two hijacked planes to deal with.
"Has the offending party been confirmed?" Captain Miller followed up.
"Affirmative. It's the same group that hijacked Nippon Airways 23."
Both captains frowned... these Japanese communists were bold and organized. No doubt that Hydra may have played a role of funding these communists. The whole escalating affair was too much for these radicals to pull off alone. Once they capture the communists, they can get some answers of who's funding them.
"We need to reassess our tactical situation," Chris thought aloud.
"What's the plan, Captain America?" Captain Miller asked.
"Have Unity and Galaxy give us a cyber bridge through the jamming zone, but we are not going to launch yet," Captain America II said, "if that KAL flight is coming here, we will need a fuller picture of whatever it is we are facing on the ground."
"Understood." Miller nodded.
"I too agree that we are facing more than we previously anticipated."
"Ma'am," CIC reported, "we are receiving a hail from an incoming Air Force Quinjet. They are transmitting a special ops IFF."
"Patch them in." Miller ordered.
Captain America II straightened up with Walker and Pierson, as connection was established. "This is Metal 0-1. USS Wilson, how do you copy?"
"We read you loud and clear, Metal 0-1." Captain Miller replied.
"This is Frost of Delta Force," the young spec ops leader called, "is Howler 7-1 Actual there?"
"This is Captain America, Howler 7-1 Actual," Chris announced his presence, "I am in charge of this operation on behalf of Colonel America."
"Understood, Captain America." Frost replied. "Glad to fight alongside you again, and Metal and I still owe you one for Colombia."
"Let's save that for after we complete this operation," Captain America II reminded, "the situation is still fluid."
Then another voice added. "Agreed, we should get on point with the mission."
Chris recognized the voice of the Canadian operator. "Lovie? Is that you?"
"Yes sir, this is Vortex speaking. Avalanche Team will be assisting with your operation while extracting HVTs from Flight 23," Maxwell 'Vortex' Lavoie stated.
"Colonel Rogers informed me regarding the HVTs." Captain America said. "What we don't know is whether the terrorists know that they are onboard."
"And hopefully they don't," Vortex remarked, "if they did, things could get real scary for Canada. Not to mention the entire world."
Captain America II knew why, but did not need to reiterate it. "Metal Team, Avalanche, come aboard the Wilson for now. I'll brief you on the current situation and our next moves."
"Got it sir." Frost acknowledged. "We're coming onboard." The comms ended after that.
"This is a freaking circus," Walker groaned.
"And it just keeps getting crazier..." Pierson shook his head. "How did they hijack two airliners in just one day!?"
"It almost sounds familiar, doesn't it?" Walker asked. Burke and Pierson said nothing, knowing what Walker referred to.
A few minutes later, Metal and Avalanche Team arrived at the bridge.
"Westbrook, Lavoie," Chris greeted his spec ops colleagues.
"Captain Burke." The two spec ops soldiers greeted back. The two could not help but notice how much buffer and taller Burke seemed from the last time they met.
"Definitely the new Captain America." Westbrook commented.
"You look like you've put on some real meat there, Burkey," Lavoie jested.
"Please don't call me that," Captain America II requested. There were some snickers from his fellow captains and some of the bridge crew at the nickname. Miller shook her head, she knew Chris well enough to avoid certain nicknames.
"As you both have heard, Red Rising Sun has taken yet another airliner hostage," Chris continued.
"We have, sir." Westbrook nodded. "Delta Services informed us about the situation here. And we also know that there are some heavily armed Ten Rings militants from the Middle East taking part."
"This sounded too big for the Ten Rings to pull off on their own." Lavoie added.
"Anything your MDIS has to offer?" Chris asked, referring to the Canadian Military Defense Intelligence Service, "we suspect Hydra's machinations, but we have no proof."
"Hey, if we are still being blunt," Lavoie replied with a sideways frown, "we know as much as you Yankees do. After all, you're not the only ones who were dealing with government problems during the war."
"I know," Chris closed his eyes, resigned to the fact that intelligence was scarce in Japan, even with Asuna Yuuki and Naomi Ootomi cooperating. After all, he could use all the help he can get. "Okay, on to the tactical briefing," Chris pointed over to a tactical holo-display for them to gather around. Upon activation, the holo-display shows the airport of where Nippon Airways 23 is held at.
"Just to bring Metal and Avalanche up to speed," Chris began, "there is a jamming field currently blanketing the area in a four mile radius. And we're planning on sending Howler Platoon to deal with the signal jammers and knock out their radar systems."
"However," Chris then expanded the map to include the airborne KAL 781. "We have another hijacked plane heading towards their location. While we cannot yet be certain that they are landing at this base..."
"So, we're gonna take the base before they arrive, depending on how fast they're going and how long until they arrive." Lavoie calculated.
"Negative," Chris replied, "we still do not have enough intel on the strength and weaponry of the enemy, and if we rush in, we could get innocent people and hundreds of our troops needlessly killed."
"Of course," Lavoie nodded. "So, what's the plan, Captain?"
"First off," Chris raised a finger before tapping on one of the comms. "Hitman and Galaxy, are you all able to listen in?"
"We're still here." Galaxy replied.
"Hitman 1 is tuned in and on standby," Monarch called from his plane in the hangar bay.
"Both Galaxy and Unity are engaging the jammer systems via cyber-attacks." Chris explained. "The original plan did call for us to attack Nishi Airport in full force as soon as the jammers were counteracted."
"And what about the second plane?" Westbrook asked.
"We will have to wait and see whether it lands," Chris said as he used the controls to zoom in on the holographic avatar, "and right now, US Forces Korea are working with the Korean authorities and the airline to get a manifest of the passengers onboard."
"Understood, the sooner we know, the better." Lavoie said.
"In the meantime, until we know that..." Chris expanded the map again, "assuming the plane does land, here is the revised mission proposal I have drawn up. 4th Platoon Captain Niemann and 13th Brigade Major Takamori should be joining via secure VTC shortly."
The two spec ops officers observed the holo-display of the expanded map. It showed included Hiroshima south of the hilly terrain, formations of the 3rd US Ranger Battalion's 4th Platoon infantry and vehicle units to the west, and the JGSDF 13th Brigade covering the south and southwest.
The CIC officer reported. "Captain, I'm getting a incoming message from Major Takamori."
Another female operator also said, "we also have Captain Niemann on VTC."
"Put both of them through," Captain Miller ordered. Moments later, Captain America speaks after connections were established.
"Captain Niemann, Major Takamori, this is Captain Chris Burke, representing the 7th Platoon."
"It's a pleasure to speak with you, Captain Burke." Major Takamori said. "We have heard much about your exploits."
"Captain America," Captain Niemann called in, "4th Platoon is holding position five miles west of the target. What's the latest sitrep?"
"We're still breaking through their jammer systems." Captain Burke said. "However, Red Rising Sun is reported to have hijacked a Korean airliner that's about to enter the airspace. Because of that, we will have to commence another threat assessment if they bring it down to Nishi."
"Copy that, Captain America. We'll continue to stand by until further orders." Captain Niemann replied.
Chris looked at his watch. There was about half an hour before the next likely broadcast of the terrorists' intended execution. "I'm amending the mission plans, so listen closely everyone."
SAO/ALO Survivor School - Nishitokyo, Tokyo:
"Whew, that was a tough math quiz." Alex commented. It was lunchtime, the students were all enjoying lunch after class and gym, especially since it was Friday, and Captain Burke was not scheduled to coach.
"You said it, Alex-kun." Suguha agreed. "Today, we've learned about the Vietnam War..."
Alex was jarred by that. It was a heavy subject. "My great-uncle fought in the Vietnam War."
"Really?" Sugu was interested.
"He was Aaron Martin. A cousin from my mother's side of the family." Alex continued. "He served in in the 75th Ranger Regiment."
"Then he's seen action during his time there." Suguha surmised.
"Yeah... But it was a nightmare in the jungle." Alex answered. "His unit was charged with guerilla infiltration and raids into North Vietnam. This also including flushing out Viet Cong tunnels."
"That sounds very dangerous, sending Rangers that deep into enemy territory?" Suguha questioned.
"Not to mention nerve-wracking. And he probably would have died if not for the commanding officer, who was what you could describe as a jerk with a golden heart and iron resolve." Alex added with a chuckle.
"Hehe.." Sugu chuckled before asking. "And I assume that your family have his diary or something?"
"My mom does," Alex beamed, "Martin actually turned it into a book after he retired. And he especially dedicated it to his commanding officer for keeping him alive."
"Nice." Sugu smiled. "What was the book's title? And who was the commanding officer?"
"It's called Love and War in the Jungle," Alex revealed, "as for the officer... it will blow your mind."
"Who?" Sugu was puzzled and excited at the same time.
"Colonel Coriolanus Amadeus Burke," Alex chuckled.
Suguha was floored. "One of Captain Burke's relatives?"
"From what my mom told me," Alex nodded, "grandfather."
"Wow..." Sugu breathed.
"Yeah, wow," Alex said before taking another bite.
Kazuto and Asuna were at another table with Rika and Scott, watching a Japanese action/comedy show.
"This show is something." Scott chuckled.
"Like I said, Soul Eater's the best there is." Rika giggled. "Students from the Death Weapons Meister Academy getting involved in missions, but tend to get on each other's nerves."
Asuna giggled as she watched. One of the characters, Death the Kid, suffers from a crippling case of OCD and had to check if every item is symmetrical perfect. Kazuto just shook his head amusedly as he ate and held Asuna.
"Still can't believe he failed the test because he was still trying to spell his name." Asuna giggled.
"And Soul was totally stripped," Kazuto snickered.
"And Patty..." Asuna shook her head. "She managed to turn her test papers into a giraffe."
It was then on the screen that Death the Kid ripped his paper trying to erase the 'k'. He screams in horror before passing out onto the floor. Scott burst out in laughter with Rika at the absurdity of it all.
"Kid's so pathetic!" Rika laughed.
"He sure is, Rika!" Scott agreed.
"And he fainted," Asuna said in a sing-song tone. Kazuto just chuckled and held Asuna. It was a relief from the news of the war in the countryside.
"You're always perfect for me, Asuna..." Kazuto whispered in her ear. "And your laughter is an elixir."
Asuna giggled. "And you're my perfect knight in shining armor."
"Ew..." Rika jokingly expressed mock disgust.
"Husband and wife being lovey-dovey." Scott snickered before leaning towards Rika's ear. "But that doesn't mean we can't compete."
He offered her a morsel of his food.
"Thanks, Scotty-kun." Rika giggled before pecking his cheek.
Nathan meanwhile was sitting with Tim and Keiko while talking with Strea on the phone.
"So, how are you doing, Strea?" Nathan asked.
Strea was calmly smiling as she looked back at him. "Been doing fine, Nathan. I have been learning more about your world."
"Good to hear," Nathan smiled, "what else have you learned?"
"Well, I've read up the history of the First American Civil War." Strea began. "This also included civil wars of other countries. I never thought that many nations would be so complicated to where unrest can occur. And even Japan had one just ten years after the first American one."
"That'll be the Satsuma Rebellion." Nathan said. "It was the samurai insurrection against the emperor and his new Imperial Army. In response to Japan's decision to leave the feudal-era behind."
Strea tilted her head.
"As time goes by, civilizations undergo changes for nations and the people that live in them. The old ways faded in place of new practices. And the same went for political systems, particularly in Japan, as the Emperor and his Imperial House became more Westernized."
"However, many people didn't approve the changes." Nathan continued.
"And that included rebellion leader, Saigo Takamori," Strea followed up, remembering what she learned.
"Correct," Nathan nodded, "he was regarded as one of the most respected and brilliant military commanders leading up to the reforms. Needless to say that they became nervous when Takamori sided with the rebels."
"It would have succeeded with the secession of Satsuma, given Takamori's battle experience," Nathan added, "however, the Imperial Japanese Army would not only conscript more men, but start receiving better training and officers well-versed in the use of rifles and artillery."
"While the rebels were armed with only swords and arrows." Strea concluded.
"It was pretty lopsided if I remember correctly," Keiko chimed.
"Well, the samurai did in fact have some rifles," Nathan corrected, "but yes, they were heavily outclassed by volume. The Imperial Army was able to buy more rifles and ammunition."
"However, that depleted their gold reserves, making it expensive for the Imperial Japanese Army." Tim added. "And left the whole empire deep in debt."
"War sounds very expensive for you humans," Strea remarked.
"Yeah, research and manufacturing of weapons, vehicles, and troop training is where the funds go to during war." Nathan agreed.
"And I hear that you Americans spend more than any other country on the planet," Keiko said.
"Also true." Nathan nodded. "Especially during the second civil war. Thankfully, Anderson Tech was several steps ahead and managed to get most of America's industry up and running before the war."
"But..." Nathan set a disclaimer, "the cost of war does not always manifest in monetary loss, as you can guess, Strea."
"That, I understand." Strea nodded. "It was strange that the second civil war was caused over this law known as the Sokovia Accords."
But before they could continue, Strea got a news alert. She opens the holo-display and reads the message. "Korean Airliner hijacked and diverted to Nishi Airport."
Nathan did a double-take when Strea read the headline. "What?!"
"Nathan?" Keiko was startled.
"What's wrong?" Tim asked.
"Another airliner's been hijacked in Japanese airspace," Nathan announced.
'Hydra?" Keiko asked with expectation.
"No... I heard that it was some group called the Red Rising Sun," Tim recalled.
"Red Rising Sun?" She glanced towards Tim.
At Kazuto and Asuna's table, Yui also popped up on their phone. "Mommy! Daddy!" Yui chimed.
"Hi Yui-chan," Kazuto smiled, but then noticed Yui's lack of a smile. If anything, she looked concerned. "What's wrong?"
"There's been plane hijackings." Yui frowned.
Kazuto sighed. "Yui, we all know that Nippon Airlines Flight 23 has been hijacked since this morning."
"There was another one," Yui explained, "a Korean Airliner."
"Korean?" Asuna was surprised. "Who's hijacking those planes?"
"Hydra?" Kazuto asked.
Yui shook her head. "It was someone calling themselves the Red Rising Sun."
Kazuto frowned as he heard the name. His dad told him about this group...
"Kazuto?" Asuna was concerned. "Did I hear the name, Red Rising Sun?"
"You have, Asuna.." Kazuto lamented. "It's that militant communist group that my dad's been warning about. They appeared months after the Second Civil War began and the collapse of the United Nations. And they are Japanese."
Asuna sighed and shook her head. Suddenly, the TVs in the cafeteria began to change as the news interrupted the regular broadcasts. Yui and Strea observed the news station from inside the phones.
"We interrupt our regular broadcasts to bring you the latest news," the network announced. "We have received report that two airliners have been hijacked by a terrorist organization called the Red Rising Sun."
The whole cafeteria fell silent as the coverage continued. The images of the Red Rising Sun appears on-screen. The militants were chanting angrily at an undisclosed location, raising their weapons in the air. "The terrorist group in question is a militant communist group, consisting of mainly Japanese, Chinese, North Korean, and Phillipino extremists aiming to oppose US presence in East Asia and the Western Pacific."
Some of the students groaned at the mention of more domestic extremists trying to harass the American military in Japan. With Hydra still on the loose, there's no telling what other extremists would get involved in the Japanese crisis.
"The group has sent a series of ultimatums to both the Japanese and American governments, the former to disavow and annul the US-Japan 2020 Security Treaty, and the latter to disband its military bases and pay a ransom of 50 million US dollars."
It was then the image of the US ambassador surrounded by Red Rising Sun soldiers is shown. He was tied down and duct taped like an animal.
Asuna stared up at the spectacle. It was a recording of the earlier broadcast of the militants giving their demands and threats. Strea watched on and wondered about the situation, she doesn't understand why it's happening when everyone's fighting against Hydra.
"They cannot be serious," Scott was dismayed.
"What are these guys thinking?" Rika groaned.
"Hold on," the anchor touched her earpiece, "the Prime Minister is now addressing the nation regarding the airline crisis."
Then live footage from Prime Minister Isagura appeared on TV. "I assure the public that we are doing everything we can to resolve this crisis peacefully," he spoke in his soft, polished bureaucrat's voice, "our negotiators are working tirelessly to get these misguided people to see reason."
Tim comforted Keiko as the speech continued. "So I strongly urge calm on everyone's part as we navigate this crisis," the politician went on. What he said next would elicit some groans, "and we urge the terrorists in the name of humanity to cease with these reckless and violent actions against our citizens and allies."
"I seriously doubt they'll listen." Alex groaned.
The speech droned on with the tone deaf assurances and appeals to humanity. The Japanese newscaster then returned. "We were also able to obtain a statement from the commander of the US Forces here in Japan from their headquarters in Okinawa concerning the situation. Here are his statements."
"Let's see what Okinawa has to say..." Randy muttered.
The general of the US Forces then came on. "The Prime Minister of Japan has his prerogatives concerning the situation, and as guests, we give him our respects," the general stated. However diplomatic his words were, his stony face of resolve said otherwise. True enough, he then followed up with, "however, I have my own obligations from the Pentagon and the White House, and here is what I can say... we are not going to let some damn communists use our countrymen as bargaining chips, and we sure on God's green earth are not about to let them get away with it."
"Amen to that." Randy smirked.
"So while our Japanese counterparts are free to negotiate, we have our own ultimatum to offer in return to theirs."
Kazuto held Asuna's hand.
"Surrender and give us back those civilians and our fellow Americans, and our Rangers won't have to drag your soviet-loving carcasses out." There was a short pause before he finishes. "That is all..."
The image moved back to the news anchor. "The Republic of Korea's president herself has also released a statement, saying, 'the hijacking of a Korean Airlines plane is an attack on Korea itself, deserving the strongest condemnation.' The Korean ambassador is also reportedly meeting with the Japanese government."
"I hope his plane doesn't get hijacked." Keiko said worried.
"No, he would be driving over from his embassy here in Tokyo," Tim corrected, "but now we've got three nations involved in this madness."
"With the Chinese States on full alert, but not taking any other actions. Which is good for us." Tim added. Meanwhile, Asuna just sat silent. Here she and Kazuto were, living a mostly normal life, while Captain America and his men were having to fight a raging war across Japan and save people from being slaughtered in political games. She also thought of the dreams she's been having where she and Kazuto were back in SAO and suddenly Captain America appeared and called them to assemble.
'If we're gonna live normal lives, we need to get ready for war...' She thought.
"Asuna?" Kazuto nudged her.
"Hmm?" Asuna shook from her thoughts.
"I know what you're thinking again," Kazuto said understandingly.
"I think we should." Asuna replied. Kazuto looked around for a bit, seeing that everyone's preoccupied, Kazuto leaned closer to Asuna.
"I'm not sure how everyone would take it." Kazuto whispered. "I mean, we still don't know if they have any superpowers or not."
"True, but right now, I cannot just stand by and watch," Asuna shook her head, "and I admit a part of me feels responsible for revealing Hydra to the world, and I want to see it through."
"I'm starting to get the idea how the original Avengers felt when SHIELD fell back in 2014." She added. "And besides... you and I have had time to hone our powers," Asuna suggested with a smirk.
"Same goes for Nathan, now that he's discovered his powers." Kazuto agreed.
"True, but I think it's best if the two of us just went." Asuna said, "besides... we're the only ones with our... costumes."
"That's true." Kazuto realized. It was something he and Asuna discussed for a while, but he never thought they would be going through with it. It surprised Kazuto how adventurous Asuna felt after what she had been through. Yet if he was honest, he himself was restless.
He then smiled. "Alright, when we get another chance, we'll do it."
"Actually," Asuna whispered, "I think now... you with me?"
Kazuto was stunned, but then gave an affirming smile. "More than you know."
Asuna giggled softly. "Thanks, hubby..."
Kazuto then turned to Rika and Scott, who were still busy watching the news.
"Excuse us," Kazuto politely muttered as he and Asuna quietly stood up and started walking out. Scott and Rika heard it and scooted out of the way to let the young, married couple out. Kazuto went to fetch his backpack in the boy's locker room.
'I hope that no one notices our absence.' Kazuto thought. 'This will be very interesting.'
He slipped on his shoes before heading out of the locker room. He met Asuna on the roof. He then set his backpack down and opened it. Inside, a black outfit lay neatly folded. Asuna looked upon it with pride as Kazuto pulled it out. It was a padded skinsuit she had made for him.
"I hope you love it." Asuna said.
Kazuto examined the suit. While it resemblance of his current ALO avatar, he saw the chest, abs, shoulders, arms and legs covered in pads, all displaying the color of black.
Asuna then took her own suit out. It was a smooth all white skinsuit. It came complete with long white gloves and boots, with a long zipper down the center for Asuna to slip her legs through. Both outfits came with masks that covered their faces. They were of the domino style, not unlike the superheroes of the 1980s and 1990s, covering much of the face down to the nose and leaving the mouth and hair free.
Asuna tied her hair into a bun before slipping on the mask. Kazuto slipped his own domino mask over his face.
"How do I look, dear?" Kazuto asked.
"Nice," Asuna complimented Kazuto with his face mask, "but I think you would look even better once you put your suit on."
"I'm just getting to that," Kazuto cheekily replied as he took his suit and went behind one side of the stair entrance. Asuna likewise took her own to the other side. Both young adults dressed down to their undergarments before slipping into their suits, legs first. Shortly after, they zipped up and slipped onto their gloves.
Kazuto felt the pads bulk up his suit, but it was very comfortable. Not something he'd wore in SAO, but it'll do. Plus, it'll make him appear muscular to the enemy. He twisted around to get a feel for the outfit, and it was good. He then emerged from his side of the entrance to face Asuna in her outfit.
"You look amazing, Asuna." Kazuto commented. The white outfit hugged Asuna's form perfectly, with the gloves and boots seamlessly blending with the one-piece suit.
"Thanks, Kazuto-kun, you look stunning yourself." Asuna giggled.
"Though these Kevlar pads make me look a tad bigger," Kazuto tapped on his chest pad.
"I requested Fury-san to put those," Asuna admitted, "after all, you're not the one casting shields that can deflect bullets."
"I understand." Kazuto nodded. "Alright, any idea how we can get out of her without being noticed or stopped?"
Asuna smiled as she lit her hands with her energy. "I've found more use of my powers, been practicing it." To show what she meant, she waved her hands and a large disc of energy appeared underneath their feet.
Kazuto marveled at this. "Asuna, I love you!"
Asuna giggled. "Thanks, I love you too, Kazuto." She moved her hands around and a dome of energy envelops around them with areas exposed for them to see.
With that, the two shot into the air with a flash of light. Kazuto watched as they ascended towards the sky above Tokyo. It was just like in Alfheim Online. But this time, they're not using fairy wings. Asuna seemed relaxed and in control as she levitated the both of them.
"This is amazing..." Kazuto breathed while observing their flight. Asuna hovered in an aetherial manner as she levitated above the city. She was making haste for her and Kazuto to get to Hiroshima as soon as possible.
Over Hiroshima Prefecture:
The Quinjets carrying the combined forces of Howler 7-1, Metal and Avalanche Teams were loaded onto the catapults for launch. In the lead Quinjet, Captain America II strapped down with Sergeant Ramirez in command of the advance squad.
"This is Howler 7-1 Actual, secure radio check," Captain America spoke into his helmet comms.
"This is Metal Actual, radio channel secured." Westbrook reported.
"Avalanche Team blowing in," Lavoie jested, "just sitting here waiting to be shot into the air. Other than that, we're ready to roll."
Captain America II then called his mission command, "Helios, can we confirm that KAL 781 is on the ground at Nishi?"
"Affirmative, Howler 7-1 Actual." Helios replied. "We have confirmation from the interceptors that KAL 781 has landed and taxied. JGSDF negotiators are continuing to engage the enemy in diplomatic talks."
"Tell the 13th Brigade to keep the terrorists occupied," Captain advised, "we will be going in silent."
"Acknowledged, Howler 7-1 Actual."
"Is our secure link with Overlord online?" Captain asked.
"Comms with Overlord have been established." Helios answered.
"Roger, I will establish communications once we are airborne," Captain America II replied.
It was then that the CIC gave the clearance to the Quinjet pilot. "Raven 1, you are cleared for take off."
"Acknowledged." The Quinjet pilot replied. "Alright, here we go!"
"Everyone, hang on," Captain America yelled.
"Everyone hang on!" Ramirez followed.
Moments later, the first Quinjet is launched.
Prez just watched from her seat in the F-14D behind Monarch, bored out of her mind. So far, she hadn't heard anything from Galaxy on the cyber-attack progress. And meanwhile, the Rangers and Delta Force were launching first while she and her pilot were on standby.
'So far, nothing...' Prez thought. 'And why do the ground pounders get to go first!?'
"You okay back there?" Monarch asked.
Prez just sighed and sat back. "Oh you know... they get to go while we stay behind."
"That's life in the air force." Monarch chuckled. "Besides, if they pinpoint the targets for us, we just might have the honor of blowing a few jamming relays sky high," Monarch grinned as he looked back to his WSO. "Just be patient, and I'm sure we'll get to work soon."
Prez just groaned before remarking. "The sooner, the better."
The three Quinjets shot off from the Helicarrier, flying a few seconds straight before engaging their active jamming and optical camouflage.
"That's phase one..." Monarch muttered.
Captain America II turned on his TacCom visor, bringing up a HUD in his vision.
"TacCom online." Chris tested the device as he looked at the transponders on the other members of his unit. All of them are highlighted by his visor.
"Overlord, this is Howler 7-1 Actual," Captain America II spoke into his Mike, "7-1 are airborne and enroute with Metal and Avalanche towards the AO to get eyes on target."
Overlord then came back, "Howler 7-1 Actual, be advised, the terrorists are issuing a new broadcast. Listen in."
"Copy that, Overlord. Patch it through." Captain America II was then treated the the sight of the masked, yet raving Japanese communist from earlier.
"You American filth do not seem to understand," the communist raved, "you think we are playing around!? You may have us fooled with the Self Defense Force negotiators. But you don't fool the Red Rising Sun!"
Chris just pursed his lips and hardened his gaze behind the visor and helmet. 'That is not good,' he thought.
"And in case you are wondering," the communist ranted, "we did seize the Korean airliner out of Alaska, with a special package delivered specifically for that plane!"
The camera footage suddenly shifted to the inside of a airliner, apparently the Korean one. The armed militants, Middle Easterners from their appearance, began to open a large container by its double doors. Captain America squinted his eyes to try and see inside, but he did not have to. The terrorists shined lights into the container, showing what appeared to be a warhead.
'It's a nuke.' Chris thought bitterly. 'Homemade dirty bomb...' He could make out a container behind the warhead with a radiation warning label displayed.
"We have a thermobaric explosive and two hundred kilograms of plutonium from our brothers in the Middle East," the Japanese communist ranted offscreen. "Just a little present for those who murdered our people back in '45. So let us modify our ultimatum... if our demands are not met in forty minutes, or US Forces approach this airport in anyway," the screen shifted back to the leader holding a clapper detonator, "we will destroy both planes and anybody who disobeys us! For the future of Red Rising Sun!"
The screen then cuts to static. "Overlord, can the contents be verified?" Captain America II asked.
"Affirmative, 7-1 Actual," the commander replied, "likely Iranian-Chinese built thermobaric bomb paired with radioactive cobalt-60."
"No doubt it's a low-yield nuclear warhead." Chris remarked.
"More accurate to describe it as a higher-end dirty bomb," Overlord corrected.
"How did they smuggle a MOAB and radioactive waste onto that plane?" Captain America II asked.
"They're more likely smuggled in via black market," Overlord answered, "probably during the civil war. We'll have people State-side investigate it, but proceed with caution, Captain."
"Acknowledged, Overlord. We're enroute to the target area. Howler 7-1 Actual out." Captain America took a deep breath, and Ramirez noticed his steeley look of concern. "Captain what is going on?" However, the themed hero was already making a priority call. "This is Howler 7-1. ALCON, ALCON, ALCON. Possible thermobaric and radiological threats are on site. I repeat, radioactive materials are on site."
Ramirez groaned as his concern was realized. 'Of course, the Red Rising Sun got a dirty bomb in their arsenal.'
"This is Avalanche 0-1," Vortex called, "7-1, did I just hear 'radioactive'?"
"Affirmative, Avalanche 0-1. They got a radioactive bomb with them." Chris replied.
"This Metal 0-1," Frost called in, "advise that we land outside the jamming zone and take a stealthy land approach."
"I agree, Frost," Captain America II replied, "we will have to accelerate our own time tables to possible direct action to neutralize the threat before we can rescue the hostages."
"Howler 7-1 Actual, this is Cheyenne 4-1 Actual," it was Captain Niemann, "say again, a radioactive threat?"
"Affirmative, Cheyenne 4-1 Actual. They've got a dirty bomb with the hostages and we got thirty-nine minutes before they detonate the bomb."
"This is Major Takamori, we have a problem," the Japanese commander alerted, "all communications our negotiator had have been severed. Somehow, they knew that your AWACS was using ECCM against their jammers."
"And what of their cyberspace?" Chris asked.
"Unknown, we cannot re-establish communications," Takamori replied. "It is possible that they'll be on guard and expect our approach."
"Negative, do not approach, I say again, do not approach," Captain America II warned. "Advise holding a defensive posture until the radiological threat is neutralized. Work with our 4th Platoon's negotiators to re-establish contact to try and keep them occupied."
"Copy that, Captain. We'll stand by until you guys deal with the radiological threat." Takamori acknowledged.
"Sir," the pilot called, "we are reaching Drop Point Alpha, sixty seconds!"
Captain America looked outside briefly to see the other two Quinjets braking off to their respective drop points for Metal and Avalanche. "Alright, people," he called out, "stand up!"
Ramirez and everyone stood up. Damion exhaled deeply as he looked over to his friend, Jenson.
"I hope you're ready, Damion." Jenson remarked.
"Of course," Damion replied curtly. He looked over to Ramirez and Vance, both of who just looking like it was just another casual office task. Of course, the two had been doing this much longer.
"Good to hear." Jenson nodded. He patted his friend hard. "Hey, we'll do just fine. Stick to our Captain and you'll make it." He leaned towards Damion. "Just make sure you stay in one piece."
"Well, I could say the same for you," Damion retorted in a friendly manner.
Captain America II moved towards the back ahead of the squad.
"Quiet now, here comes the Captain." Jenson gestured towards Chris.
"Alright, Howlers, prepare for air drop!" Captain America II prompted as he slung his M4v1 behind him. He then pulled his 2011 pistol out of his holster and racked it before putting it back. Both Damion and Jenson checked their gear and weapons.
"Thirty seconds," the co-pilot called out.
"Okay, we're ready." Jenson said.
"Ramirez, on me," Captain prompted, "you're second in line after I make my jump!"
"Yes sir!" Ramirez replied.
"Ten seconds!" The call out came.
'Here it comes.' Damion thought. The rear hatch of the Quinjet rapidly opened, giving Captain America II a good view of the forests below. It was far from ideal, but the trees would also help to conceal the Rangers' landing and movement from afar.
The pilot called out. "Alright, you got the green light. Go go!"
"Detach!" Captain America II yelled as he sprinted out, not needing a winged suit at the altitude he was dropping from. He fell through the trees, and landed straight on his feet with his super-soldier strength. Ramirez and the others followed suit, deploying their winged suits as they jumped.
"Hah!" Damion exhaled as he jumped out and extended his wings. He glided between the trees with ease, avoiding touching the branches. Except one... and he ended up getting entangled above the ground. He cursed under his breath as he struggled to unzip the winged suit.
"Come on!" Damion tried to break free.
Suddenly, Captain America II ran up just below Damion. Seeing the entanglement, the superhero produced a frisbee from his gauntlet and aimed for the branch.
"Get ready!" Captain America II called out as he threw the frisbee, taking out the branch and Damion fell to the ground.
"Gotcha!" Captain caught the private before he could slam to the ground and steadied him right up.
"Thanks, Captain." Damion said while brushing the leaves off of his uniform.
"Get the dust out, Private Burton," Captain America II prompted, "we've got a war to fight."
"Yes sir." Damion acknowledged before brushing the last of the leaves away. Soon Ramirez and the other Rangers gathered around the Captain.
"Burton, you okay," Ramirez asked, "you took a hard tumble there."
"I'm fine, just got leaves up my nose." Damion groaned. Captain America II got a head-count. With the aid of his TacCom, he could see that all his men were present.
"Okay, we're on a short time table. So, hustle everyone." Captain America II ordered. "Ramirez, you have the recon drone?"
"I do, sir." Ramirez pulled out the drone no bigger than a ball. He activates it and it began to hover.
"Good, we need to get an inside look into Nippon 23," Captain America II said, "and hopefully, Metal and Avalanche have their drones for KAL 781 and the base." He then decided to test his comms. True enough, there was only static indicative of the jamming blanketing the area.
Ramirez then directs the drone up towards the trees and flies away. "As long as we remain within 50 yards, we should be able to retain localized connection and control," the seasoned sergeant informed.
And with that, everyone continued on through the forest. For Damion, he felt for his M4v1, as it felt much lighter without his standard M320 launcher attached, which hung from his side. He thought about what has happened for the past few weeks, about his newfound strength, despite discovering them back in February. It led to some rather interesting hijinks on the base with his peers. While some of the Howlers, like Jenson, were impressed from the report. Others became jealous and confused as how he developed them without his powers being detected beforehand.
For one, Damion nearly slipped on some ice one time and grabbed the handrail of some stairs, only to crush it in the process. The fall also didn't hurt him in any way. Damion also found himself being able to march longer and carry more ammunition for longer periods of time.
He wondered if he would be involved of carrying heavy ammunition such as for LMGs or explosives due to his newfound strength.
Meanwhile:
Frost led the way for his Delta Force team with his HK416A5 trained forward. Compared to Howler Platoon's soldiers, he and his men had much plainer uniforms with few-to-no unit markings, and faces concealed more under balaclavas and heavy-tinted googles. However, as team leader, he was issued the new TacCom tactical visor similar to Captain America's model.
So far, everyone's account for and they have not spotted any activity up ahead. He and Metal would take a different path from Howler and Avalanche; their targets to scout were the base facilities and possible heavy weapons. And, if possible, find a way inside without being detected. Since the 4th Platoon had withdrawn its scouts, there was less risk of friendly fire in the comms blackout. Nonetheless, the radiological threat now posed by the Reds and the Ten Rings was a huge factor.
Frost continued his focus towards the forest path up ahead. Since they were approaching from the top of a hill, the six-man Metal Team had eyes on the Nisihi Airport below. They managed to spot where the Reds are dug in and the number of hangers. However, they'll have to get close to figure out where the planes full of hostages are kept. He could see the runway, but not the tarmac where both 747s likely were. Frost would have to trust Howler and Avalanche to deal with them while he and Metal dealt with the base and its defenses.
Before heading down from the hill, Metal Team launched one of their recon drones to scout ahead. The drone rotors hummed as it lifted off. While direct control and connection only worked within 50 meters, it had enough of AI assistance to fly and function semi-autonomously.
"Nothing so far, sir." One of the sergeants reported, he was put in charge of monitoring the drone's location. "And the drone is moving ahead of us."
"We'll need to move a little closer to try and keep the drone in control range," Frost prompted, "have your weapons ready, but stay discrete. No need to kick off a firestorm before we can get a handle on what we are facing."
"Will do, sir." The sergeant acknowledged before drawing his HK416 rifle.
"Alright, let's go silent. Crunch, take Chaser and Quest and cover the drone's scan of the hangers. Archer, Splinter, and I will set up a fifty on an elevated position to the east," Frost ordered.
"We're on it, sir." Crunch nodded before he, Chaser, and Quest headed off towards the path.
With Avalanche:
"This is Vortex, any allies copy?" The Canadian special operator tried his comms, but got static.
'Of course, the Reds are jamming our signals.' He thought. He refocused on checking his SIG MCX and drone among others. He then got a head count of his own six-man team as they filtered slowly one by one through the trees. Thankfully, all were accounted for.
He then re-tested his own TacCom, still not used to the idea of a HUD lighting up his vision.
'That's Anderson Tech alright.' Vortex thought as he continued to fiddle with the TacCom. It was an export model of what US spec ops used that was still in testing, and as such, its network implementation was still nowhere near what Burke and Frost enjoyed.
"Sir, shall we deploy the drone?" One of the sergeants asked.
Vortex looked at it for a moment, but then returned it to its pouch. "I say we get closer to our target first."
"Vortex," one of his team members reminded, "you know our HVI is on Nippon 23, not KAL 781."
"I know that," Vortex replied, "but with the limited manpower we have, we'll have to entrust 7-1 to deal with that. I trust the Captain with all the details I briefed him on."
The rest of Avalanche Team looked at one another, they knew that Vortex has a point. After a few moments.
"Alright then."
"We'll recon KAL 781, hopefully Galaxy will break a pathway through the jamming to create a connection to Helios, and then we can get a better picture of our opposition and the dirty bomb that the Captain mentioned before."
"Now, let's keep moving." Vortex ordered. "And watch your sectors. No need to get them spooked and setting off that dirty nuke."
Everyone acknowledged as they continued on.
USS Wilson:
"What's the status?" Miller asked the CIC officer.
The operator with the callsign Helios reported, "Howler 7-1, Metal, and Avalanche Teams have entered the AO, but we cannot establish contact due to the jamming."
"It's no doubt that they're enroute to their targets." Helios added. "AWACS Galaxy is reporting that all three of our Quinjets have safely exited the blackout zone and are returning to base."
"Very good." Miller nodded. Since that unhinged broadcast from the Japanese communists elevating their threats, she monitored just about every moment more closely. She's also preparing the hazmat evac team in case they detonated their dirty bomb. She knew that thermobarics would likely leave few, if any survivors, but Miller was determined to be ready to help in any scenario.
"How goes Unity's progress against they cyberspace?" Miller then asked.
"Galaxy's reported that she's made progress." Helios reported. "She is working on re-establishing communications with our combat elements inside the blackout zone. But with the failsafes the Reds placed, it'll take some time."
Miller just shook her head. This whole thing was turning into a circus, and now media and talking heads all over Japan were tuning in on the unfolding international crisis. This upped the stakes in an already politically charged mess. She didn't want to think what else could make the situation worse.
Onboard Nippon Airways 23:
The hostages and their families are huddled together in fear at the sight of the Red Rising Sun terrorists. The terrorists were clearly young, but full of vitriol and itchy trigger fingers. Most of their faces were covered in red cloth masks. The militants especially trained their M16s on the American passengers. The adult hostages hid their children to protect them in case they started shooting.
Among them... was Tony Stark and Pepper Potts Stark.
Stark himself had a strange sense of deja vu from a similar situation nearly twenty years ago... the very captivity that forever changed the course of his life. Of course, he was also held by the company known as AIM, who was led by Aldrich Killian, and created the Extremis formula.
Stark held his daughter to his chest. Part of him wanted to activate his Iron Man suit and defeat the communist terrorists, but it's too risky as the sudden firefight would harm the hostages. Not to mentioned triggering the dirty bomb. And having a family, it made him more cautious.
His daughter, Morgan, shivered in his arms as she was scared out of her mind. The little girl could not understand what was happening and why these people were threatening everyone.
"It's alright, Morgan." Tony whispered as he held her. He glanced up towards Pepper. Like him, she wanted to do something about it, but is unable to without harming the hostages.
"Tony... how long has it been?" Pepper asked. She had her phone and watched taken from her like the others.
"Over twenty minutes, I believe." Tony said. Although he wasn't sure. He could not show himself to be afraid for Morgan's sake. However, knowing his friend Steve Rogers, he isn't gonna stand by and let it happen. In fact, he'd probably ordered the new Captain America and Howler Platoon to stop the Red Rising Sun and Ten Rings terrorists and liberate the hostages.
Suddenly, the terrorist leader came back with the plane's captain at gunpoint.
"Alright, listen up!" He began. "Since the American government refuses to listen to us..."
The Red gestured to a camera being held by one of his comrades. He brought the captain around in camera's view.
"It's time to show them who is in charge!" The leader erratically shook the gun in the Japanese captain's face. He then turned to the captain. "alright, unless you want to see one of our countrymen suffer the consequences." He then pointed the gun towards the American passengers. "Choose one of them!"
The Japanese captain nervously looked towards the hostages. There was palpable fear among the flight crew as they now knew what they were about to be forced to do.
"Well?" The Red leader demanded. "Who will it be!? Either choose an American, or you force us to kill one of our own!"
Tony held his daughter tight as Pepper watched in anxiety. The captain continued to hesitate. The flight attendants were torn between begging their captain to make a decision and potentially sacrificing one of their passengers.
"No..." the captain suddenly replied, "I cannot." he turned back to the Red leader. "I can't do it to a human being... .. and so are you. You can still choose to stop this."
The Red leader remained silent for a moment...
Then he said. "Very well then..." He put the gun to the captain's forehead and blasted a 9mm round into it, blood and grey matter splattered onto the ceiling. The hostages screamed as the gunshot rang throughout the plane. Tony and Pepper held their Morgan tight to keep her from seeing such a murder.
The Red leader remained silent, waiting for the screams to stop before he continued. "This is the price of indecision on the part of the Self Defense Forces and their US military backers! The blood of the flight captains is on their hands, not the Red Rising Sun!"
Tony grit his teeth... the communists had made a big mistake. When Captain America would find out what they had done, he would certainly not hold back anything.
With Howler Platoon:
Captain America II alternated between the drone feed on his TacCom and keeping sight of his approach towards the western end of the airport where the tarmac would be. So far, the communists haven't spotted them. However, the Ten Rings were the ones who worried Burke most, as they were more likely to be the hardened and experienced fighters. They also the ones who have trade with Hydra and have been supplying the Reds with weapons that would challenge anyone that gets in their way.
Burke could only wonder how much the communists knew if anything that their Middle Eastern partners were in league with a former German fascist organization. Then again, maybe they did as long as Hydra kept America and the Free World distracted while others continued their operations in the shadows.
Whether it was the Japanese hard left or the far right, Hydra would have reasons to have both sides at America's throat and subverting the Japanese government.
"Hold," Captain America II raised his hand. The rest of the Howlers halted and remained still as statues.
"Ramirez, raise the drone," Captain ordered.
The seasoned sergeant acknowledged and took out the drone and activated it. The drone hovered above before flying off. With local Bluetooth, Captain America was able to view the drone feed on his TacCom. He flies the drone high above the tree lines and the airport came into view. The image was somewhat grainy, which was a bit disappointing. But, he'll have to suffice for now.
"Ramirez, rotate the drone so I can get a look at the runway and tarmac," Captain prompted. Ramirez adjusted the control stick and the drone turned towards the runway and tarmac.
"There they are..." Chris muttered as he saw the two airliners. The two large 747s were parked out on the tarmac side by side. Both of which are surrounded by several communist terrorists, some of which are settled in technical trucks.
"Ramirez, can you see if you can get any closer?"
"I can try, but we're still far away," Ramirez informed, "and the Bluetooth only works out to 50 yards in this environment."
"Well, see what you can." Chris replied. "We need to know the exact number and how many are surrounding those planes."
"We might have to get closer for that, sir," Ramirez just told it as it was.
Captain America took stock of the situation. He looked around towards his twelve-man detachment. The young officer then made the decision. "Ramirez, hand me control of the UAV. I'm going to sync it to my TacCom."
"Sure thing, Cap." Ramirez nodded before handing the controller to Chris.
"No need," Chris put his hand up. He then tapped on his right wrist gauntlet's PDA. Within moments, the UAV drone is under Captain America's control. "We can use the drone as a comms relay within its local operating radius," Captain instructed, "I'm going to try and get closer. Ramirez, you and the men hold your positions until I get eyes on the target and re-establish contact with Avalanche."
"Consider it done, Captain." Ramirez replied. Damion just watched as his Captain went on ahead. He continued to take in his surroundings as he remained on alert. Damion now realized how much modern military operations relied on communications, so the lack of that just made the ambience all the more thick with tension. It was something that he learned while in military training. He and the others were trained in the forests of Wisconsin to cope with this loss of communication to be able to function as soldiers.
It wasn't an easy course as some of the soldiers nearly went mad from the total lack of communication from their superiors. Suburban recruits often struggled. But those who have been living in the country had no problem. Especially since most of them served as part of the Free States Rangers during the war.
Yet, none of them necessarily had to deal with a nuclear threat so directly.
Damion sighed silently as he continues to observe his surroundings.
Onboard the Wilson:
Prez could not believe what just happened on the livestream she was monitoring from her back seat.
The communists had just murdered the Nippon Airways Flight captain. And blamed the US Armed Forces and the JSDF for his death. The worst part was that a part of her was starting to blame her military command for delaying their response to the crisis and leaving her and Monarch stuck on the Helicarrier's catapult.
'We should've responded faster.' She thought bitterly. She leaned over to look at Monarch. Who appeared to be just as disbelief as she was.
"Monarch," Prez muttered aloud.
"Yes, Prez?" Monarch asked.
"You remember those days when we could set our own missions and launches without having to get permission from some stiff stuck-ups in an easy chair somewhere," Prez posed the question.
"I do..." Monarch nodded. "Those were simpler days."
"Well I'm tired of sitting on this flying flattop while those people are dying," Prez confessed, "I say we just use that Firebird Squadron authority of ours and just go and kick some tail!"
"You sure you want to do that, Prez?" Monarch asked. "I mean, I understand that we need to do something about the hostage crisis..."
"If we don't," Prez interrupted, "more people will die and everyone in Japan will continue to blame us. As if they haven't done so already!"
Monarch grit his teeth. This was the toughest decision to make yet and he had to choose fast. He then decided to radio his team's AWACS. "Comic, you there?"
"Hey Monarch," Comic greeted back, "why aren't you in the air yet!"
"We were told to wait on the Wilson," Monarch replied, "but that's not what's important right now.."
"Has Galaxy made any progress to restore communications with our forces in the blackout zone?"
"From what I heard, Galaxy's still trying to remove the communications jam." Monarch then got through to Galaxy. "Galaxy, do you copy?"
A few moments, a voice replied. "I read you loud and clear."
"Can you prioritize restoring communications with Captain America and the spec ops inside the airport," Monarch prompted, "we need intel on the enemy and their jamming relays."
"We're almost done. We should have intel in a few minutes." Galaxy reported. Unity chimed in, "we should be able to use the drones to re-establish comms with the Howler, Metal, and Avalanche Team in one minute!"
"Alright then, the sooner we have the jammers' locations, the better." Monarch said. "I'll be joining the formation soon."
"Alright then, good luck!" Unity chimed.
Monarch then switched frequencies with the launch controller. "Hitman 1, requesting permission to launch!"
"Stand by, Monarch." The launch controller replied.
A few seconds later...
"Monarch, permission accepted."
"Thank you, Prez and I are heading to the catapult now." Monarch acknowledged.
"Captain Miller wishes you Godspeed and good hunting."
"Thank you," Monarch said as he increased thrust, "we're taking off, Prez."
"Finally..." Prez groaned. "Let's get this show in the air."
"Hitman 1, you are cleared for launch," the catapult controller gave the thumbs-up. Monarch returned the thumbs-up as he and Prez run checks in the F-14.
"All systems are go, Monarch." Prez said.
"Increasing thrust," Monarch said as he pushed the throttle to military power. After a few seconds of thrust buildup, the catapult was greenlit. There was a jolt as the F-14 was shot forward. Moments later, the F-14 shot out from the USS Wilson and Monarch steered towards the skies above Hiroshima.
With Kazuto and Asuna:
Kazuto could not believe how smooth the flight was. They flew further from Tokyo, let along how fast the trip took. Asuna looked very aetherial and composed as there was a sheen to her powers. As they approached the Hiroshima Prefecture, Asuna channeled her powers to fly low, knowing that the Reds have radar set up.
She and Kazuto descended slowly into a clearing. Soon, they touched the ground and the white energy dome disappears. Kazuto took a deep breath, he pulled out his phone to check the time. It was a good thing that tactical pockets were on the outfits.
"We've made good time, Asuna." Kazuto said before placing his phone back into the pocket. "You just flew that distance in just ten minutes!"
Asuna smiled. "I guess I'm Lightning Flash not just with the sword or on the ground, but in the air." She pulled out her phone, and took it off airplane mode. "Let's see what they are saying now."
"Here," Kazuto lent Asuna some headphones as they knelt. They clicked onto the news station and they saw the flight captain being executed after refusing to pick one of the hostages.
Asuna gasped in utter shock.
"They just executed one of the hostages..." Kazuto muttered in disbelief. While the image was censored, the screaming was still very much audible. This includes the threats the communist leader is making after the execution. He was now actually threatening to blow up both planes, and any US Forces that dared to approach with a thermobaric bomb.
"Great, now they have a dirty bomb." Kazuto groaned. "This means that we need to be more careful."
Asuna touched his hand. "We will stop them and save those people..." She said. "... we're the next Avengers, remember?"
Kazuto looked towards Asuna's face, realizing what she was saying, nodded. "Yes... It's time that we start being the next Avengers..."
It was then that their phones buzzed. The two teenage superheroes quickly checked their phones, seeing that it was from their text message boxes. It was from 'Shadow Bear' with a number to call back on.
"Probably to give him a full report?" Asuna asked. She and Kazuto still remembered being interviewed by high-ranking officials in the past. Kazuto just clicked on the number, knowing who the callsign was for. He hears the phone ringing from the other end.
It was instantly picked up. "Hello, Kirito." It was indeed Nick Fury.
"Shadow Bear.." Kazuto greeted.
Nick Fury was to the point. "You know, you and your wife are supposed to be back at school."
"We know, sir." Kazuto acknowledged. "But we couldn't just stood by and let innocent people get killed."
Kazuto knew about Delta Service's geotracking of cellular phones. Even Anderson Tech allowed geotracking devices of his technology after the war.
"And besides, we are gonna be the next Avengers," Kazuto added, "so, we consider this as our first trial..."
Asuna then called in with her own phone. "Mr. Fury... It was my idea to go rescue these people. Part of me still felt that peace in the real world was shattered after exposing Hydra."
"I figured that much," Fury replied.
"And it's up to us to help clean up the messes that the rift have caused." She continued. "Please don't try to stop us."
To her surprise, there was a chuckle. "I wasn't planning to anyway..."
"What?" Kazuto was stunned.
"If anything... I would welcome your support," Fury revealed.
"T-Thank you, Fury-san." Kazuto stammered.
"Now here is what you need to know so far..." The intelligence director quickly brought the two prospective heroes up to speed on the situation, and the current lack of communications with Captain America's advance forces inside the Nishi Airport.
"So, they're in the dark at the moment until they re-established communications..." Fury finishes.
"Which means we have to somehow disable their jamming equipment and their bomb before the Self Defense Forces and US Army move in," Kazuto clenched his fist.
"We need to find out where the jamming devices are located." Asuna added. "Now the question is how we find them."
"Perhaps if we scout ahead..." Kazuto suggested.
"Actually," Fury said, "I think the US Air Force is just about ready to help I'm a way."
"When will they strike?" Asuna asked.
"Well, they are about to re-establish communications with the Captain, actually," Fury said, "but yours truly just might have a few additional tricks to take advantage of their AWACS."
"Really?" Kazuto raised an eyebrow upon hearing this.
"In fact, it should be flying towards you in the next ten seconds," Fury revealed.
Both Kazuto and Asuna were surprised indeed. Then again, this is Nick Fury who's always a step ahead. It was then that a faint droning sound was heard. The teenage superheroes looked up to find the source of the sound.
"I'd step aside if I were you," Fury said over the phone. Kazuto and Asuna realized what he meant and quickly moved out of the way. There was a heavy rustling of wind as a loud jet noise was heard. Moments later, they see something materialized out of thin air as it descends from the sky. It had deactivated it optical camouflage to reveal an advanced VTOL stealth fighter.
"An F-35..." Kazuto gasped.
As it lowered itself, it's profile became apparent, though most striking were the bulges on the top of the aircraft and its elongated nose. This F-35 had two ejection seats in a tandem cockpit arrangement.
"I wonder who's flying it?" Asuna asked. And as if on cue, the canopy opens up. Revealing that the cockpit is empty.
"It's empty," she was surprised.
"Not quite..." A voice spoke up, it came from the cockpit of the F-35.
"Trinity?" Kazuto recognized that voice.
"We meet again, Kirito." Trinity greeted. "Fury has instructed me to assist both you and Asuna in the rescue mission."
Kazuto blinked for a moment. "Either I am dreaming, or Fury just gave us a whole fighter and support AI for me and Asuna to use."
"You're not dreaming, Dear," Asuna assured as she started to climb the ladder steps up to the cockpit. Kazuto snapped out of his daze and climbed up the ladder steps, Kazuto sat in the front seat while Asuna sat in the rear seat.
"We are sitting in a real fighter jet," Kazuto muttered. He marveled over the control panel and took in the details. The touchscreen was easy to read and understand, with language setting in English and Japanese. The most essential controls such as the joystick, throttle, pedals, and even flares and weapons triggers were in places that felt easy to reach and comfortable.
Asuna looked around in the rear seat, and was impressed with the layout. Like in the front seat, there was a touchscreen for the navigator to use. With language setting in English and Japanese.
It was then that Trinity's avatar popped up in a corner of the screen. "Hello, Asuna." She greeted.
"You're the AI that help Yui and Strea save us and the Captain," Asuna beamed.
"That is correct," Trinity nodded. "I will be serving as your flight and control assistant."
Kazuto spoke. "Meaning you'll help us fight against the Reds."
"Correct. First off," Trinity instructed, "close the canopy."
"Right." Kazuto scans the control panel for the switch to close the canopy. The two piece glass closed from the front and rear, sealing with a hiss.
"Alright, it's closed." Kazuto said. Trinity then displayed a cutout of the aircraft, an F-35D. One by one, the segments of the display all were green. "Aircraft systems and weapons, optimal."
Asuna blinked, taking in what Trinity had said. "We are going to fly this?"
"That is correct, Asuna.." Trinity answered. "We will be cloaked as we use our short-range sensors to locate the jamming sources. It is important that we locate what we suspect are three triangulator-type radar relays."
"Wait, you're saying that the jamming devices are actually the communists' radar?" Kazuto asked.
"Precisely." Trinity answered. "The sooner we locate and destroy them, the faster communications will be reestablished. However, the relays must be destroyed at once before any of them can send out an alert to warn the insurgents at the airport."
"How do you know that?" Kazuto asked.
"It was something that the Pacificans and Blue Cosmos used during the civil war." Trinity explained. "They used relays after capturing oil refineries and nuclear power plants in western states and destroyed them when the Free States got too close as part of their area denial strategy. This also included rescuing hostages from the Blue Cosmos. We need to destroy these relays to delay the enemy's response and to enable Overlord and Helios to coordinate the attack on the base."
"What about the detonator and the bomb?" Asuna asked.
"Captain America will deal with that," Trinity advised, "now focus on the jammers and help Captain America do his job. My sister Unity is helping an allied AWACS restore communications with him as we speak."
Kazuto was curious upon hearing the name. However, now isn't the time for idle questions as they have a mission. "Asuna, strap in," he urged her as he did his own harness, "we're taking off."
Asuna grabbed the harnesses and strapped herself in. "Okay, all set."
"Alright, Kirito," Trinity instructed, "push the throttle on your left forward until the thrust gauge shows you are at 'military power'."
Kazuto glanced at the throttle on his left and pushes it forward. He grasped the joystick which was on his right. He tiltled the joystick on the left to test it and the jet turned slightly to the left. The jet then stopped ascending as Trinity lowered off the throttle.
"Assisted Flying Mode is active."
Kazuto nodded, last thing they wanted is to get too high where they'll be spotted.
"I will be able to simplify the flying controls for you in Assisted Flying Mode to maintain control of the aircraft, even if it means that you may experience some countering of your control inputs," Trinity explained.
"We understand." Kazuto nodded.
"What would I be doing?" Asuna asked.
"You can focus on radar and weapons," Trinity explained, "and you have control over state of the art quantum communications that would enable you to direct allied missiles and aircraft onto designated targets."
"Alright." Asuna turned her attention to the touchscreen in front of her. It was daunting, but Asuna knew that many lives were counting on her and Kazuto getting this right. "Let's get going." She said at last.
Kazuto grinned as he put on his helmet, "I'm with you, honey."
"Let's find their jamming equipment." Asuna then works with the touchscreen.
"Activate the active optical camouflage before flying into the blackout zone," Trinity advised.
Asuna locates the control that reads 'optical camouflage' and pressed the button. The F-35D disappeared in thin air. "It's on."
She also spotted the helmet for her to use before placing it on her head. The heads-up display filled her vision with the holographic visor.
'Now I'm ready.' Asuna thought. She gripped her controls with determination. Asuna and Kazuto were going to open a path for reinforcements to Captain America.
With Captain America:
Captain America II moved fast with the drone, not wanting to linger and risk being out in the open. Howler Platoon, remained behind and held their position. Captain America II came upon an old fence separating him from the inside of the airport. He hid behind a tree to take in the surroundings behind the fence.
None of the Reds are nearby the fence, but he continued to scan the area. It was then that a chirpy voice came in on his headset.
"Oh Captain America!" It was Unity.
The young Captain realized what it meant. Communications have been re-established. "Unity," Captain America talked back, "you were successful."
"Thanks, Cap!" Unity replied. "The Wilson has re-established communications with the other teams for further reports!"
"Howler 7-1, this is AWACS Galaxy, do you copy?"
"Read you, Galaxy," Captain replied, "static interference, but I can hear you."
"Glad to hear that, Howler 7-1." Galaxy said. "I can also re-establish your secure comms with the Wilson as well."
"Please do, we need to let them know the situation down here." Chris ordered.
"Roger that. And Captain," Galaxy's tone became somber, "the enemy just murdered a hostage. The Red leader tried to force the flight captain to choose, but he refused and was murdered for it."
Captain America II's gaze hardened. It was what he had feared. "Then, we need to move fast." He said. The news had now changed the whole calculus for the young officer. The Reds were going to regret that decision once he was through with them. "Anything you spotted from the air?" He then asked.
"Negative, still encountering interference," Galaxy reported.
"How soon can you locate those jamming devices?"
"Much sooner now," Unity chirped, "thanks to me and my two helpers!"
"Thanks Unity." Captain America sighed. "Two helpers though?"
"Two other operatives are looking for the jammers as well." Unity chimed.
"Any idea who they are?" He asked.
"Not that I know," Unity answered. "from what I've received that we have others to help us locate and destroy the jammers. Trinity just told us to trust them."
"Alright then." Captain America groaned. He figured that it's Fury's operatives getting involved. But, he's got pressing matters to deal with right now. "Howler 7-1 Actual to Metal and Avalanche, how copy?"
"This is Metal 0-1." Frost replied.
"Avalanche 0-1, read you audible, 7-1 Actual."
"Be advised, the Reds have executed one of the hostages." Captain America reported. "We need to pick up the pace if we're gonna save the rest. Link your tactical data with Galaxy and Helios. We need to make sure that our intel and attacks are timed upon my disabling of the dirty bomb."
"Roger that, Howler 7-1 Actual. Linking up with Galaxy and Helios now." Metal 0-1 called out.
"Sending tactical data," Avalanche 0-1 announced. Captain's TacCom begins receiving data on his visor. His map began to auto-populate with intel on the various enemy positions and weapons stationed throughout the area.
"Anything on the jammer devices?" Captain asked.
"Leave that to Trinity and her SEAD helpers," Unity cheekily chirped, "How about you go be the dashing prince in shining armor and take out that bomb and the detonator?" That made Captain America II narrow his eyes. He could never get used to getting lip from an AI.
"Very well then," He acknowledged before turning his attention back to the mission. He then interfaced with the UAV, the camera-view appeared on his visor as he observed the area around him. He maneuvered the drone towards the KAL Flight 781. The built-in range finder showed that it was within close enough proximity for the drone to operate.
'Alright, let's see what else we can find.' Captain thought as he maneuvers the drone. He knew that the bomb was somewhere inside the 747 cargo hold, plus he needed to know how many hostiles were aboard and the positions of the hostages.
"This is Avalanche 0-1," Vortex reported, "we're just about thirty yards in concealment Northeast of the Nippon Airways plane. Two of my guys have eyes on both aircraft from a sniping position as well."
A few seconds later...
"This is Metal 0-1." Frost reported. "Be advised, we've got hostile armored vehicles and possible attack helicopters on-site."
"Acknowledged, Metal 0-1." Captain replied. 'Cheery,' he thought sarcastically. Of course these communists and jihadis had to have some on hand. And there's no telling what else they have up their sleeves.
He positioned himself behind a tree with a good view. With that, Chris began to control the UAV to move it closer to the Korean airliner. When he got it close as he could without drawing attention, he begins to scan the Korean airliner. He activated the bio-scanner settings, hoping that it was powerful enough through the electronic interference and aircraft hull.
Sure enough, the scanner picked up multiple heat signatures from within the aircraft hull. There were several frightened passengers, and a few militants gesturing threateningly with a mix of weapons. He could see smaller heat signatures indicating that children are present.
Captain America II felt indignation towards these militants... he had seen too many children be ill-treated over his military career. All this reminded him too much of the civil war. And every other brushfire conflict he fought across North and South America since... the tears, the cries, the loss of innocence and family. It was enough to make young men like him just jaded toward the universe.
Chris just shook his head, and refocused on the task... finding that bomb. He adjusted the control and piloted the recon drone around the airliner. It was still a large plane, so he needed to know where exactly the bomb was. The best chance was to get the drone inside the airliner without it being spotted.
'Now, where would the cargo opening be?' Chris thought. It was then that he could see the open cargo bay door on the side of the aircraft. There were two guards posted near it, and one of the militants stepped out. It was no doubt that he found the entrance inside the plane.
'Jackpot.' Chris thought as he continued observing the cargo bay. He'll have to wait until the militants aren't paying attention, that'll be the way to sneak the drone in unnoticed. And he would have to be fast with the hum noise the drone's propellers made.
His eyes are glued to the video feed, waiting for the right moment. He then contacted Vortex. "Vortex, you have your drone in the air?"
"Oui, I do..." Vortex replied.
"I need a distraction to get my drone into the KAL 747," Captain America informed him, "can you give your snipers a target to get the guards' attention?"
"Consider it done, Captain." Vortex acknowledged. "Count on my men clearing the way for you."
"Good, Howler 7-1 Actual out." Chris finished. He decided to pop a cough drop into his mouth to suck on. He then checked on his weapons and light suit functions to assure himself that he was ready to go.
Thirty seconds later, Chris sees a couple of the militants that were stationed near the airliner's wings turning their attention towards the forest edge. Chris glanced towards the direction they were facing and sees one of the drones flying around the foliage. The drone was using the surrounding foliage to create more noise.
The militant snipers took shots at the drone, but Chris saw that they were missing every shot. Some of the guards moved from the plane and started recklessly firing in the direction of the drone. Captain America shook his head at their lack of trigger discipline.
Still, while there were many enemies around, the guards moving away from the cargo bay door was enough of an opening for Chris' drone.
'Here I go...' Chris directs the drone towards the cargo doors quickly and enters inside. It was rather dark...
Chris activated the drone's night vision mode and the area lit up in a green glow on the screen. The cargo bay was quite heavily loaded. The young super-soldier would have to take care not to bump the drone against something. Plus, the heavy-looking crates looked suspicious.
"I'll have to ask the Pentagon to investigate Anchorage..."
He continues to explore the interior of the cargo bay. As he heard faint shouts of someone lecturing his comrades, Chris continued to move the drone further inside. There was increasing static from surface interference by the plane hull. Chris hoped that he would not lose control.
"Come one, little birdie, stay with me..." Then, he spotted something in the corner of the bay. If the 747 diagram on the TacCom was correct, the drone was approaching the center of the aircraft... well between the fuel tank and the wings.
"Do they have the dirty bomb placed there?" He asked himself. It would make the most sense... place it in the most likely spot to incinerate the plane and everyone in it. Not to mention covering the entire airfield with radiation all in one blast. He moved the drone closer as the static intensified.
"Stay with me..." He stopped moving the drone closer and tried to make what was he seeing through the static. If it was what he thought it was, Chris was ready to deploy the little EOD bot inside the drone. He pressed a few buttons and the small camera feed appeared on his visor.
"Come on little guy..."
Unfortunately, the sensors picked up a spike of high radiation as the drone got close, causing both it and the EOD bot to short out. Both screens went dead. Despite this, it was no doubt that the cause of the short out was radiation. He found the dirty bomb within the Korean airliner.
However, it also meant that he now had to make a decision. Chris looked at his watch... only ten minutes before the deadline. Captain America could either try and disable the thermobaric bomb, or go after the leader in Nippon 23 to destroy the detonator.
With Kazuto and Asuna:
"I still can't believe Fury-san sent us an advanced stealth fighter," Asuna muttered. "Let alone fly it."
Kazuto, on the other hand, was getting the hang of flying the stealth fighter. "This fighter is surprisingly easy to handle."
"That is because I am here," Trinity reminded.
"Oh... That's right.." Kazuto admitted sheepishly.
"Just follow the noise indicator on the HUD," Trinity instructed, "that will allow you track the source of the frequency jamming based on signal noise intensity. It is imperative to map out all three triangulating radars for simultaneous destruction."
"Will do, Trinity." Asuna said as she focused on the touchscreen's radar.
"How do we pull that off?" Kazuto asked.
"I've tuned the radar to pick up any electronic signal from jammer systems." Trinity explained.
"And how do we destroy all three without setting off alarms?" Kazuto added.
"Map out the triangulators first," Trinity urged.
"She's right, Kazuto." Asuna agreed while her attention was fixed on the touchscreen. "I'm seeing signals coming from 100 yards west from us."
"That's pretty close," Kazuto said, "let me try the infrared." He switched to the options menu on his helmet visor and found the infrared setting and turned it on. He turned his head right, as he was on a southwest bearing. The moment he turned, he spotted a small signal from within the forest. There was a heat signature, with several humanoid shapes around the apparent device.
"I found one of the devices surrounded by Reds." Kazuto reported.
"Affirmative," Trinity acknowledged, "Mrs. Asuna, please upload this via the secure link to AWACS Galaxy."
"What is that? AWACS?" Asuna asked.
"Airborne Warning And Control System." Trinity explained. "He is the one connection we have to the outside world."
"I see..." Asuna said. "How do I find the secure link?"
"There's a communication settings in the touchscreen," Trinity guided.
"Oh," Asuna realized the tab was there. She pressed it and found another tab that reads 'connect AWACS'. She pressed it.
"I will communicate with Galaxy," Trinity told Asuna.
"Okay, the connection is secured." Asuna reported.
"AWACS Galaxy, this is Trinity, we are uploading geographic data on the first triangulating radar jammer to your radar."
"Copy that, Trinity," Galaxy replied, "I'm receiving the data now."
A few seconds had passed...
"Galaxy to Trinity, the data transfer is successful. Please continue to locate the triangulating radars. I'll dispatch stealth aircraft to assist with neutralizing the jamming sources once the targets are confirmed."
"Acknowledged, Galaxy. Trinity out."
The comms link ended.
"So that was Galaxy," Asuna muttered.
"He's Hitman Team's AWACS from the Firebird Squadron," Trinity said, "the Air Force sent them here to assist with the operation."
"That's good to hear..." Asuna said.
"Okay, let's find more of those devices." Kazuto added. Asuna nodded before turning her attention back to the touchscreen's radar. "I spotted another one, a few miles Southeast from us. Be careful not to fly us over the airport, Kazuto-kun."
"Don't worry, Asuna. I'll keep us a great distance from the airport." Kazuto reassured. "I certainly don't want to spoil the Captain's surprise, whatever he has planned." He continued piloting the stealth fighter towards their next destination.
Kadena Air Base, United States Forces Japan Headquarters Okinawa:
Colonel Steve Rogers sat in his office, he continued on receiving reports from the Nippon Airways hostage crisis. He almost wished that he could be out there with 7th Platoon, but with the 3rd Ranger Battalion increasing the number of other platoons and soldiers in Japan, Steve was being called upon to help manage the movements of these units.
"It just never ends..." Rogers muttered. Since he returned to the Army as a Colonel, he was having to put up with more administrative and managerial tasks compared to his hero successor holding his former rank. It wasn't easy as he knew that reconstruction of not just the nation, but the Armed Forces comes with challenges.
His demand for old-fashioned war experience was in high demand, and the elevation of Chris Burke to his mantle was only a necessary compensation for his absence on the field of battle. But the biggest challenge is creating the new generation for the Avengers. There were a lot of political and national tensions to bridge and overcome in creating such a group to succeed the original Avengers, and with the near miss that was Thanos, Rogers was keen on reviving the Avengers before another such threat came along. Which is sooner than he expected with Hydra's resurrection.
'Sometimes this modern world moves too fast,' Rogers thought as he walked towards Operations. He made his way through the corridors and enters through the double-doors. "I need a status report on our forces in Hiroshima!"
One of the officers reported. "The USS Wilson have re-established communications with Howler, Metal, and Avalanche platoons. Otherwise, we are still not able to use long range comms or surveillance to get any further intel."
"Anything else?" Rogers asked.
"The Wilson also contacted another team that will assist the Wilson of locating and destroying the jamming devices the Reds are using." The officer replied.
"I was not informed that we had another force," Colonel Rogers remarked.
"Well, they were contacted by Trinity." The officer explained.
"Fury..." Rogers knew. He sighed before continuing. "As long as the other team are aiding us of rescuing the hostages.."
He then turned his attention to 4th Platoon. "I also assume Captain Niemann is holding steady to the west still?"
"That is correct, Colonel." The officer replied. "So far, they've seen no activity from the Reds."
"Of course," Rogers shook his head, "when we cannot see them in the first place." He felt like he was stating the obvious, but kept his tone cool.
"However, Captain Niemann indicates that the JSDF negotiators are reaching some sort of deal with the Reds," the operations officer said.
"Wait... I thought we were supposed to be stalling for Captain America," Rogers did not like the suddenness of this development. "What are they dealing?"
"I'm sorry, sir," the officer apologized, "but that was all that we heard."
Rogers could not accept that. He called out, "get me Captain Niemann!"
The operations officer nodded before placing the call to Captain Niemann. Several seconds have passed before the officer replied. "Captain Niemann's on the line."
"Captain Niemann, this is Colonel Rogers!" Steve called.
A few moments passed before a voice replied. "This is Captain Niemann."
"Captain... did I hear correctly from Operations here that the Japanese are negotiating some sort of deal?" Steve asked.
"That is correct, Colonel." Niemann replied.
"That is not what we asked the Japanese to do," Colonel Rogers stated, "they are supposed to stall for time."
"Colonel... They've executed one of the hostages." Niemann explained. "And if we continue to stall, they're just gonna get irritated and execute more hostages. And the Japanese public will blame us for not saving them."
Rogers exhaled sharply. "Can you put me on with Major Takamori?"
"I'll see if he's available for the moment, Colonel..." Niemann replied.
"I mean business with him, captain," Steve clarified, his tone hardening. "Now..."
"Alright then, I'll speak with him.." There was a pause on the other end.
"What happened to being tough on the terrorists..." Steve muttered to himself.
"Colonel Rogers," the voice spoke, "this is Major Takamori speaking..."
"Hello, major, what is this about a deal?" Steve did not waste time. "I thought that we're just stalling for the Howlers to complete their mission."
Takamori curtly answered, "and we believe we have a way to save at least some of the hostages."
"And how are you planning on do so?" Rogers questioned.
"We believe that we can at least have the good will of the kidnappers in having them release the Japanese citizens into our custody," Takamori explained, "our negotiator is promising that if they release the Japanese civilians..."
"They will leave the dirty bomb disarmed, but keep the American and Korean hostages."
"And what of those people?" Steve demanded. "You know we can't just let them be murdered."
"We expect further negotiations-"
"No," Colonel Rogers cut him off, "do you know exactly what you and your negotiator are doing? You are undermining Captain America's ability to rescue all of the remaining hostages and giving the terrorists what they want."
Colonel Rogers continued. "Also, how would you explain it to their families? That their loved ones won't be coming home because you agreed to let the terrorists keep half of the hostages?"
"Sir-" Takamori tried to speak, but Colonel Rogers interrupted.
"And unless you want to be looking in mirrors for the rest of your life, I suggest that you continue stalling the terrorists until Captain America and the Howlers rescue all of the hostages! And our 4th Platoon requires your full support to secure the airport and block any avenues of escape. That is where we need your best assistance!"
This time, Takamori didn't attempt to reply.
"Look, it's clear that the Reds are trying to get a hook on you," Rogers then shifted gears, "so let's instead use that as a distraction."
"That airline captain gave his life for all the passengers under his wing, and we'll honor that by trying to buy as much time as we can for the Captain."
There was a pause before Takamori finally spoke. "Very well, Colonel. We'll continue to by them time..."
"And as soon as the radar and jamming system are down and Captain America confirms that the dirty bomb is neutralized, your brigade and our Rangers can advance on the airport. He and his men are going to need your support in locking that place down," Colonel Rogers iterated, "don't let him down."
"I won't this time, sir." Takamori acknowledged.
Colonel Rogers sighed in relief. "It's up to you now, Captain America."
With Captain America:
WHACK!
The Red soldier went down quickly and quietly, taking a hit from one of the Captain's frisbees. Being a super-soldier, the second Captain America had this option of a more discreet projectile attack.
'So far, so good.' Captain thought as he moves from one cover to the other within the air field. Without his drone, Captain was going to have to engage the bomb on KAL 781 himself, and fortunately for everyone, he was experienced and certified in bomb disarmament.
The real challenge was to get inside the airliner's cargo bay without being detected. He had some allies from afar, however...
Captain America spied around... and saw that the militants had rather carelessly left a fuel truck next to some helicopters about three hundred yards to his south. Now there was a fire mission.
'Just need some explosives and we'll have a fire show.' He thought. He then called, "Vortex, this is Howler 7-1 Actual. I have a fire mission for your snipers. Target is a fuel truck three hundred yards to my south. Place incendiary rounds on target for secondaries."
"Copy that, Howler 7-1 Actual. I see the fuel tank from here." Vortex replied. "I'll laze the target for my snipers. Counting on you to stay clear of secondaries."
"Acknowledged, Vortex." Captain America said. He then switched comms back to his unit. "Avalanche 0-1 will cause a distraction for me to sneak in and disarm the dirty bomb. Ramirez, confirm that you have eyes on."
"This is Ramirez, I have eyes on you." Ramirez responded.
"I'm about to engage the KAL flight and the hit cargo inside. Ramirez, provide overwatch for me as I move in," Captain America ordered.
"Roger that, Captain." Ramirez acknowledged. Captain America II slung his rifle and deployed his Vector SMG. He peeked over the concrete divider he was hiding behind. He glanced towards the militants before turning back towards the airliner.
A voice then crackled. "Avalanche 0-5, shot out."
Captain sees the fuel truck took hits from the bullets, puncturing the side and leaking fuel. It was then that another round went into one of the holes, and after a few seconds... The explosion sent a deafening shockwave all over the air field.
It was enough to startle and draw the attention of many of the militants. Most of them rushed towards the fire to put out the fire while others were stunned. However, it did just leave two guards over by the KAL's cargo bay door stairs.
"I got two militants guarding the KAL's cargo bay entrance, gonna have to take them out." Captain America reported. "Ramirez, I will need suppressed marksman fire on the tango to my left. The one on my right is mine."
"I got him in my sights, sir. Ready to fire on your mark." Ramirez replied. Captain aimed his suppressed KRISS Vector, confident that the sounds of the roaring fires and his use of subsonic ammo would keep him concealed.
He takes the shot and one of the militants went down after taking the head-shot. The other guard glanced over briefly, but was shot in the head before he could react. "Clear Captain," Ramirez reported.
"Alright, watch my six, Ramirez," Captain America II said as he leapt out. He quickly made his way towards the cargo bay entrance. There was no time to hide the bodies, so he'll have to be quick. He quickly located the damaged drone. There also happened to be additional voices in the cargo hold... but they were further away, so Captain decided they could be dealt with afterwards. He looked up from the drone to see the large dirty bomb assembly in its shipping container.
Captain cautiously approached the container in case it had a proximity fail-safe. He then tapped on the TacCom visor for an enhanced electromagnetic view for trap devices. He spotted a few of them, on of them included the crate's lid. It was an electric trap set for anybody who got too close and touched it.
'There's gotta be a small power source somewhere.' Captain thought as he scanned the lid some more. It didn't take long to find the power source, which is connected to a large battery.
"Sloppy." Captain America disconnects the battery, disabling the electric trap. It was too easy for him. He then opens the lid of the container and gazed at the dirty bomb. It looked to be an aircraft-mounted thermobaric bomb jury-rigged to a radio receiver, with several containers of radioactive cobalt-60 strapped to the insides of the container around the bomb.
'Gotta focus on the radio receiver...' Captain thought. As he stepped slightly into the containing, his radiological meter suddenly appeared in his TacCom HUD. It was still relatively safe, but there was definitely some elevated radiation. 'These commies raised in a basement?' Captain thought to himself, 'they let the radiation leak!'
He continues to scan the radio receiver to find any openings, he'll have to be careful for the time being.
Onboard Nippon 23:
Tony, Pepper, and everyone heard the commotion that was going on outside. Pepper was still pretty shaken from having to shield Morgan from the flight captain having his head blown off. And the explosion that happened outside didn't help calm the situation down.
"What is going on out there?"
"No idea..." Tony whispered. "But something's happening..." He hoped that crazed Red did not come back. It was clear that the young man was unstable and violent. However, he continued to wonder about the explosion. He couldn't see it as it came from the opposite side of the airliner and many people blocked the windows. Suddenly, he just felt a compulsion to pray... something the old him would not have contemplated. It has been with him since his fight against Thanos seven years ago where he was injured while fighting the Titan.
'God... I know I am afraid and unworthy even as I put on a brave show... But please protect everyone on this plane from the terrorist, including protecting my family... And please, bring us some sort of help, be it in a settlement or even Captain America's justice. Don't let any more innocents suffer...'
'...Amen...' Tony finished. He opened his eyes and looked around. He felt himself at peace. If the explosion was something, it was no accident... Perhaps...
'Rescue's finally here...'
With Kazuto and Asuna:
"Where is the last one?" Asuna was looking around. The third triangulating radar was proving to be much nore elusive than she had hoped. Kazuto remained focused on flying around the forest, trying to guess where the third radar is located at.
However, it had been over five minutes since last contact.
"Any ideas where it would be, Trinity?" Asuna asked.
"Scanning..." Trinity said as she manipulated the sensors on the F-35D. Asuna glued her attention on the touchscreen radar.
However, there was still nothing. Kazuto's eyes continued to scan the surrounding forest from the air, thinking he could spot it. But the canopy of trees made it difficult for him to spot it.
'What could make this last one so difficult to spot?'
He tried to recollect about the surrounding area, checking if there's any areas that they've missed.
"Trinity, we did fly over much of the surroundings, except for the base, right?" Kazuto asked.
"We've covered 95 percent of the surroundings." Trinity reported.
Kazuto mused... and the more he did, the more he entertained a risky possibility.
"Kazuto?" Asuna asked.
Kazuto squeezed the control sticks, he was positioned over a certain area of the forest. "Trinity... can you and Asuna let me off just over the airport?" Kazuto asked.
"Depends, what are you two planning?" Trinity questioned.
"We're gonna try to find the third jammer on foot." Kazuto answered.
"That is a risky plan," Trinity reminded, "and we have Howler 7-1 operating in the area."
"I know," Kazuto acknowledged, "but we can't find it in the air and there's no telling how long it would take before the Reds decide to detonate their bomb."
Asuna looked at her own hands. It occurred to her that maybe she could shield herself and Kazuto from any potential blasts, but was not sure about how powerful thermobarics were. Regardless, she knows that Kazuto's right and they're better at finding the device from the ground.
"Fury figured that you would say something like that," Trinity remarked.
"He has?" Kazuto blinked.
"Check under your ejection seats," Trinity prompted. Both Kazuto and Asuna looked under the seats.
"Wait, chests?" Kazuto questioned as he pulled on the handle. He pulled out the case and opened it. He was surprised to see a submachine gun and ten loaded stick magazines. He remembered seeing it on some of the Americans, and recalled that Chris referred to this futuristic weapon as a Vector. He spotted the sidearm and saw it was an ZE-10 handgun. He remember seeing this back in ALO during the Total War of Alfheim.
Asuna opened her case, and found the same type of attack frisbees that she had see the new Captain America use. 'What am I supposed to do with these?'
She picks up one of the attack frisbees and inspect them closely. It then occurred to her that she had some level of telekinesis through her energy projection.
'Maybe I could...'
"Get us over that airport, Trinity," Kazuto urged.
"I'm taking us there now.." Trinity replied as the stealth fighter then banked to the right and headed off towards the airport. "However, you should know that Captain America was last reported inside airport. Discretion is well advised while he is carrying out his mission."
"We'll keep that in mind, the last thing we need is Captain America finding out and being livid." Kazuto said. He knew Chris enough to be stringent about thinking his movements through, and he and Asuna would not benefit from him showing up to gym class angry at the both of them for screwing up a mission.
"We'll make sure we keep to the shadows." Asuna added. She was both anxious and excited to do something good for the Captain again.
As they approached 200 yards of the airport. "Alright, this is as far as I can go." Trinity reported. The canopy opened in two. Kazuto and Asuna took off their helmets and jumped out of the stealth fighter, landing on the ground with ease. Asuna carried her weapons in a shoulder-slung pouch, while Kazuto had his Vector shoulders and sidearm holstered.
"Back on the ground again, dear..." Kazuto remarked. "Let's get moving..."
They had been dropped off in a forested area to the east of the airport. The two costume-clad teens ventured through the forest in search of the last jamming device. The young heroes knew that the radar was somewhere near or on the premises, so there was a good chance of encountering militants.
Kazuto and Asuna scanned their surroundings, focusing their attention for anything that sounded unusual within the forest ambience.
Trinity then radioed through their earpieces. "Interference source detected."
"Location?" Kazuto asked.
Trinity answered, "abandoned radar station inside the airport."
Both Kazuto and Asuna froze. "Inside the airport?" That meant the last triangulator was heavily guarded. And if Captain America's within the airport, there's a good chance that they'll be spotted by him.
Kazuto then muttered, "no turning back."
"We'll have to keep in the shadows." Asuna added. "We don't want them getting spooked and setting off that bomb."
Kazuto and Asuna moved on through the forest towards the airport. As they reached the fence, Kazuto jumped over, surprising himself a bit with how high he could clear it. Asuna followed shortly after, she jumped over the fence with ease herself. It also did help that she had her energy projection for some levitation.
Kazuto and Asuna hid behind the bushes and observed the airfield. They could see a lot of young armed Asian militants, along with some gruff and brutish looking militants with rifles and RPGs. Strangely, there was a massive fire towards the north part of the area.
"Looks like Captain America created a diversion..." Asuna whispered.
"Looks that way," Kazuto urged as he tugged on Asuna's arm, "we'd better get over to that radar tower." He pointed with his gun at the tower with its antenna.
"Lead the way, honey." Asuna replied.
"And you get to cover my back," Kazuto nodded, "this may get messy." They both quickly and quietly headed towards one of the hangers, hiding behind the side in its shadow. Kazuto saw many bad guys who were armed with old M16s and AKs around, along with old, but functional Vietnam and 80s era helicopters and armored vehicles.
"Anything so far, Kazuto?" Asuna asked. As the two snuck close towards the tower, they could see that it was completely surrounded by Ten Rings militants and more modern armored vehicles.
"This is gonna be a challenge." Kazuto muttered. He could see no way to sneak past them. He looked around to see if he could create a distraction. But realized that it would be impossible.
Asuna looked over, and pursed her lips. 'No getting around them. I hope Burke-taicho is taking care of that bomb.'
With Captain America II:
Captain America studied the receiver/detonator setup. He identified it as an electrical short trap of sorts. 'If I simply try to cut the detonator out or smash the receiver, it will trigger,' he realized. He had to somehow disable or remove either component without shorting the circuit and triggering an explosion. He continued scanning the dirty bomb, searching for a gap in the system.
'Maybe if I can somehow create a bridge to prevent the short circuit as I remove the control assembly.'
It was risky, but he's got to send it a try. Making sure that the hostiles in the hold were not coming over, Captain America took his knife and cut some wire from the trap that he disabled. He then carefully started to unscrew the controller assembly. He had to find the two wires forming the circuit between the trigger and the actual detonator to separate the two safely.
'So far, no detonation..' He thought bitterly. Fortunately, he could see the two wires that he identified as forming the trigger loop. The Captain carefully stripped the insulation from them, not cutting all the way through. 'Time to form a parallel loop,' he told himself.
He takes another glance towards the cargo entrance, none of the militants are around. Captain listened again for footsteps coming his way... none. He then proceeded to carefully wrap his cut wire metal around the exposed wires. The process took more than a minute as the wires are very tricky to wrap. And it was difficult with full gloves on, but Chris knew to keep them on to protect himself against the current. Fortunately, he was dexterous enough to do it in three minutes.
At last, he finished wrapping the two wires together. Captain took a deep breath... this was either going to be a brilliant workaround a bomb trigger, or a foolhardy suicide attempt. "Only one way to find out," he muttered to himself. The lives of hundreds depended on him correctly identifying the wire type in the end. The wiring suggested that it was an AC and his loop would intercept any detonation signals, but if he got it wrong everyone was dead.
Captain America II put the wire below his improvised loop to the serrated part of his blade. "Time to cut the trigger." He cut the wire.
