Deep within the quiet city with a dark and gloomy sky hanging above, a young female in her late twenties, with long black hair walks down the side of the road. Rain falls from the night sky, wetting her appearance. Her boot heels clicking against the puddled stone pavement as she slowly passes under a single street light illuminating the immediate area as shadows receed. A reflected shine comes from her black, round rimmed glasses as she watches a lone taxi cab drive right past her. It wasn't unusual for people to be out this late on a Tuesday night, especially those getting back home from the bar, a place she has visited almost every other day around 7:00 p.m.
With a hand reaching into her leather jacket, she pulls out her old iphone and checks the time. 10:30 p.m. in white bolded letters over an image of her and a guy with short blond hair and green eyes, wearing a white loose top, jeans. The two of them smiling, and embracing as the girl has her arm stretched out to take the selfie of them.
"Odd seeing you out this late." A voice says behind her in a deep, yet gentle tone. The woman turns her head slightly, glancing back over her shoulder to see a well groomed male, wearing a black trench coat, appearing to be in his early thirties with an umbrella. "You should know standing out in the rain will lead you to getting a fever."
"Funny." Her voice flat. "We don't get sick." Giving him a slow blink. The man slowly approaches her and stands with the umbrella over both of them, stopping her from getting damp any further by the rain.
"I may not be him, but you're still under my protection. What he did was against protocol, and I'm sorry you had to experience that. However, running away from this won't fix anything. You're still young and inexperienced." The man says, looking at her with sad eyes.
"I don't need your pity. I can manage on my own, which I've been doing for the past few weeks. Only a matter of time before I regress back into society."
"But you can't, I've been watching you. The life in which you knew and lived... it is gone. To everyone you are dead. No matter how hard you try, you cannot fit back into society. Please, let me provide for you. He mentioned had anything happened to him, to take care of you in his stead." His voice soft as the rain falls, hitting the umbrella above, as it protects them. The girl simply just keeps looking at him before turning fully to look at him. "Briz, please. Let me help. You're like family. It pains me to see you struggle."
Briz pans her eyes back to her phone screen saver. One of the few images she has as a reminder of him after he disappeared. All he had told her was he was going to meet with some old friends, but he never returned. He had abandoned her, is what everyone around her has told her. The newblood abandoned, but Briz believes something else had happened.
"You all believe he is dead, yet there is no confirmed death certificate to prove he is. I don't need another sire taking care of me when the one who embraced me is still out there." Her eyes narrow at him as she clicks her phone screen off. The man exhales, running a hand through his hair.
"Briz, it has been months since he was reported missing. You'll have to move on. The sooner you do it the less it hurts. I've heard word they'll be cleaning out his condo soon. While I understand you two shared something, it's just best to move on. As you know, even we do not live forever. Everything eventually dies."
Long black eyelashes shroud her eyes, as she pans them to the ground. She had no idea how his world worked. It was completely different from the stories read and movies she's seen. This world was a game of politics, and deadly one at that. Her ears pick up ok the ever so subtle shift of the man releasing a sad sigh.
"Alright." She says, soaking in his words. He was right. There was no way she could continue to survive without her mentor, without him. He promised they would be together forever, yet in reality, she was left alone to navigate this harsh world by herself. "I'll take accept, only for him. You're right. As things progress, I may end up dead as I myself am still new at all of this. One wrong move and I'll end up..."
Her voice trails, unable to finish her sentence. The man moves and places his hand upon her shoulder, moving close and embraces her.
"I understand and I'm glad you finally accepted. I promise I will carry out his wish. There is no need for you to worry Briz. No one would dare to harm you under my watch, I promise. Please just put your faith and trust in me." Briz just simply nods her head as he slides his hand down, and slips it around her lower back.
"Let's get you home. We've been out for far too long. You must be hungry."
