Ainsley's POV
Normally, my alarm clock is that annoying iphone alarm. But for some reason, this morning, there was this annoying banging sound instead.
"Why is the alarm different? What kind of dream tells me to change my phone alarm?" I muttered. I rolled my eyes internally as I tried to get up for the day.
"Wakey, wakey!" called out. I glanced towards the voices, and realized something. The banging was the door, and it was kicked off its hinges. And there were two people in the room now, Baba and Soryu.
"Oh gosh, that really wasn't a dream," I groaned. "Ugh, you know, you could have knocked instead," I snapped at them.
"We did," Soryu said, irritation dripping from his voice.
"Oh, did you, opps."
"Now, now, Soryu, you're going to scare her with that scary face of yours. Now, my beautiful Ainsley, you're going to have to put this on," Baba said as he gave me a maid uniform. I lifted it up and asked, "what is this?"
"The Tres Spades maid uniform!"
"Why?"
"Because, you would have to start working to pay back the money you were bought for, silly," he said, winking at me.
"You do know that I have another job? One that pays more than this?"
"Oh that detective job? Mamo took care of that for you! It's all fine, and just to let you know, he did give you to me, so I don't want to hear anymore about a different man."
Poisoning everyone started to seem like a very good idea to me, and at this point, I think it would count as self-defense. And judging from her face from yesterday, I am thinking she would be on board with it.
Baba started to talk, bringing me out of my thoughts, "And your friend, Kira, should be joining you. I think she is dressed and ready to go."
"Wait! Ha-I mean Kira can pay it all! She's a fantastic worker, and I'm sure she will figure it out!"
"Didn't you say that you were the one that we technically bought? Something like you ain't going to get a discount on you?" Soryu asked, almost amused at my own pitfall. I glared at him. He was making me really hate mobsters and his stupid face.
"You know, my presence is good enough, and you should be paying me now!"
"Just shut up and change. I'm not dealing with a delusional woman this early in the morning," he responded, his voice really dripping with venom at the word woman.
"I would only be delusional because I had to see your ugly looking face this morning," I said in a higher pitched voice, waving him bye.
"We can always spend the whole day together instead. That would be fun," Baba said, sliding closer to me.
"Nope! No way, get out!" I yelled, shoving him out.
After I was changed, Baba made sure to let me know that Hanh and I cannot let anyone know about the black market auction. He wrapped it up, like he's letting me know, so Soryu doesn't go after each of us, and that Hanh got that special lecture from the man himself. Baba then directed me to go downstairs and meet up with Hanh. By the time I got there, she was talking to an older Japanese man with dark curly brown hair. He was dressed in a suit that matched the color scheme of the maid uniforms that we wore.
"Ainsley!" Hanh called me over. "This is Kenzaki Hajime, the manager of the maids. He'll introduce us to the other maids and help us if need be," she continued as I walked over.
I smiled at him, and then shot daggers at Hanh.
"Excuse us for a moment," Hanh said before dragging me away. Once we were out of earshot of anyone around, I hissed, "How could you go through with this? I can't believe you! I know you're an Asian woman, and they are mostly taught to be submissive, but this is over the top!"
"What is over the top is you promising me a nice trip to Japan only to be sold to criminals! And now I am trying my best not to get killed! "
"Okay, now that is you overreacting."
"But you know what, I found one reason that makes the whole thing a little, tiny, bit better. You have to wear that ridiculous uniform too. It's like we are in a cosplay cafe, except we're not getting paid to do it for fun."
"Oh, right! We can bring down their operation from the inside! And I have my bestie Asian maid to thank for that!"
"No, wait, are you blaming me right now if something were to go wrong! I didn't sign up for that!"
I already got away from her, more energized to finish my mission, again very happy that Hanh was the one that was stuck with that grumpy guy. And before anyone blames me for pushing him unto her, at least Hanh is smart enough to think her way out. For the rest of the morning gathering of the other employees at the hotel and casino, I avoided Hanh's glances, embracing my new role as an employee for that arrogant prick.
"And finally, I would like to introduce two new employees, Ms. Kira and Ms. Ainsley," Kenzaki introduces us to our groups of "coworkers".
"They will be joining us from today, and I need people that will show them how we do things. For today's schedule, I have Ms. Chisato showing Ms. Kira the ropes, and Mrs. Erika will be guiding Ms. Ainsley. You are all dismissed. I finally glanced over at Hanh, but she was quickly led away by another woman, one that I was assuming is Chisato.
"Hey! You're with me! And I won't tolerate lazy slackers!" shouted a woman whose brown hair was tied back in a ponytail.
"And do you know that lazy and slacker are redundant, so you really only needed one of those words, not two."
"Do you think you're so smart?" she replied.
"Honestly, that is just me being nice. I could be nicer, because I barely tolerate harpies," at my response, the twins that were standing besides her gasped.
"You better close your mouth or some flies might make their way into you."
"Y-you!"
"What, you can't think? I guess that's why you need to use redundant words to make the silence be filled with something?"
"This is inappropriate! What if a guest hears you?"
"Yeah, what if a guest hears you?" both the twins echoed, as if they idolized the harpy.
"Right, so we should get to working?" I asked, putting on the highest pitch voice I could muster to mimic them. All three glared at me, and I knew I was just about to have the time of my life. Erika "hmp!" and walked away, leaving me to follow her. Once we got to a room, I went straight to the fridge, only to be disappointed that there was nothing.
"What are you doing," Erika started.
I sighed, "What does it look like?"
"Looks like you are slacking off!"
"Congrations! You won the lottery!" I rolled my eyes.
"We have multiple rooms to clean up, and I cannot train a lazy employee like you! And on top of that, having you here will only slow me down!"
"Then I guess you better start cleaning."
Erika's face is now quite red, before she mutters something under her breath and started to pick up the pace of her cleaning. She had made it quite clear through her sharp movements that she was quite annoyed with me, but I didn't care. I just needed to get through the day and figure out how I was going to deal with the 5 annoying men that were involved in something illegal and how to go about it. And soon enough, it was my favorite time of the day, lunchtime.
I took a tray and quickly grabbed a bunch of food. Despite it being in Japan, there were quite a bit more "American" food options, especially my favorite, chicken nuggets. I turned around to be unfortunately surprised by Erika.
"Chicken nuggets? I knew you were a slacker, but I didn't expect your taste buds to be childish too. Not to mention, you forgetting to pay, or were you just planning on stealing?" The twins besides her snickered.
"It's a pretty good thing that I am not obliged to listen to you. But since you are so concerned, you are welcome to pay for it," I responded, rolling my eyes again. I did managed to see Hanh by that roll, and I can tell she was getting concerned and starting to head over.
"And I wouldn't mind paying for it, if you actually worked for it," she responded. And with those remarks, I wasn't sure where Erika stood in terms of social hierarchy here, but we were starting to draw attention and whispers. I looked at her, weighing my options, because on one end, I should teach her lesson right now, otherwise, I do have a feeling that she will make my life here as hellish as possible, and on the other hand, I still had those annoying, rich guys that are kinda my boss at this moment.
I looked at my tray again. I really like my chicken nuggets, so I wouldn't want to waste that, but there was a bowl of mashed potatoes on the food table . As I was thinking about my lovely nuggets, it seemed like Erika did not have the same consideration, because she yanked my tray from my hand and dumped my precious chicken nuggets on me. I didn't waste one minute, because I grabbed the bowl of mashed potatoes, shoved the bowl into her face, and yanked her off her feet into the closest and largest trash bin.
"Act trashy again. See what happens," I said while slapping my hands together like I was dusting off the day's work.
I grabbed another tray of chicken nuggets and turned around to find a table only to see Hanh face palming, and all 5 guys were present, and they all had mixed emotions.
"What? You got a problem with my chicken nuggets?"
